Two things I like about the recent reputation recalculation:
- You have more freedom to post suggestions that you believe are likely to be negatively received, because your chances of coming out with net positive rep are much higher.
- Even if you do come out with a net negative rep, in my case, at this moment, I've earned enough extra rep such that I can still lose 2,000 before it starts to have an effect on my privileges.

@SonictheReinstateMonica-hog ...isn't the point of downvotes to discourage posting stuff you think will be negatively received?

> The idea of negative reputation is certainly not intended to be a barrier to any earnest attempt to participate, even if that attempt is to propose an idea that's very likely to be unpopular." - Tim Post

well, no, it's to rate the quality of questions/answers so they can be properly deleted if need be.

Well, I guess I should have written there that I was specifically referring to this site, Meta.SE.
And, as you're probably aware, downvotes are simply used to indicate disagreement rather than to indicate that it's a bad, useless post.

@SonictheReinstateMonica-hog on the other hand, if something is worth saying, sometimes its alright to take the downvote hit for it

@JourneymanGeek especially since upvotes outweigh downvotes in terms of rep

7:46 AM
@JAD eh. Rep will take care of itself at some point
Or more precisely if you're worried about rep, you get more from spread across many posts over time than any one post

figured. The Jon Skeet rep-cap every day for the next 10 years effect

Well on meta, I suspect the exact dynamic is a bit different

@Tinkeringbell Corporate Christmas present, 2019 edition.
We were informed yesterday that each dev should write a document that lists every project we worked on from January 2018 up to present, with a description of the project and involved technologies/frameworks.....
I have been backtracking my old documents, mails and such to interpolate the history....
it is about midday now, and I am still at September 2018.....
BORINGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG
Watching paint dry would be far more fun.

11:35 AM
That's an expensive use of your time...

11:56 AM
@Hitodama your manager surely knows what you've worked on
and your company surely tracks your time?
if my company asked me to do that, my manager would likely explode at the stupid waste of time and resources.
make sure the last item on there is 1 day, wasted, writing this list
Also, I hope you've got a good CV because to me, that sounds like someones making a list, checking it twice, handing out P45's because they're not nice.

@djsmiley2k-CoW I'm actually singing this in my head
although to get the timing better I'm singing "handing out P45's because they're not very nice"

@djsmiley2k-CoW nope, the thing is clearly related to an ongoing plan to somehow have an internal skillcard for each dev so that when a need arises they can know who can fit the job.
And before you ask, yes - we don't currently have one and yes, this is the worst possible way to implement that

A company I used to work for did the same, it was the product of sales people who knew absolutely nothing about software engineering.

especially since I fear the result of all this will be a pile of Word documents that will just be stored somewhere and forgotten until next time.

12:44 PM
let me guess @Hitodama for most things you'd need to ask someone about, you already know who'd you ask?
and the biggest problem isn't 'who knows what', but 'who's approachable to ask about X?'
Those who know the most, are the most overworked.
and so have the least time to share the knowledge

@djsmiley2k-CoW nope. It could be useful to have an internal database that DEVS can use to know who has already worked with some tech/framework.
But this data collection seems more oriented to just update the CVs in a "how much should customers pay for devs hours" view
also..... you forgot this.

Save the day for little no pay, get the blame when others cause mess, clean up after them.

@ShadowThePrincessWizard yep, because the expectation are basically "just rub the lamp and everything will be fine in the blink of an eye"

@Hitodama pretty much my job description.

@JourneymanGeek I've never really been satisfied by that.

I was 398 steps away from getting the ability to VTC. But just because I posted an unpopular answer, I was initially set back four steps to 402 steps. I could get those four steps back, but that's not really fair because if I did the exact same thing minus the unpopular post, I would have been 394 steps away, not 398. It's absolutely worthless.
I sure hope Reactions gets rolled out on Meta. That would be akin to my previous sort-of-idea of having a separate vote for agreement vs. disagreement that wouldn't affect the owner's rep.

Has reactions been modified to include a negative reaction? last iteration i saw of it only had positive reactions.
I suspect that if it had both, it'd simply be one more thing every downvote is accompanied by
My issue is more that i don't like the fact that using my privileges can result in me losing them, even when using them properly.

5:38 PM
the beatings will continue until the beatable are beaten
@SonictheReinstateMonica-hog guess what. The platform the company says is specifically not a forum, and not built around the idea of discussion, is completely and utterly terrible at being a platform for discussion! Who'd have thought!
yet not built here ism's mean you can't get anything better to use either

Unfortunately it's a difficult problem to solve. Chat here for example is great for discussion... but awful for retaining information.

@user400654 Most reactions systems don't have negative reactions.

Though the "sad" reaction on Facebook is sort of a negative reaction.
@djsmiley2k-CoW Also, you know what the main reason cited for moving from UserVoice to meta SE sites was? The fact that you can downvote things you disagree with. No other considerations were made!

5:59 PM
i feel... conflicted on downvotes for feature requests. I don't think they're necessary, but i think the lack of them should be coupled with showing how many unique visitors have visited it prominently, to show how many people viewed it and decided not to "like" it.

@user400654 Yeah feature requests and downvotes are something I feel are distinctly not well implemented here for a lot of reasons. But for complex reasons it is also hard to fix.

6:16 PM
Hmmm, up and downvotes on a feature request should be named "I want this" and "I don't want this".
There's also no way to 'answer' a feature request, so the site ccompletely fails in that respecct.
other than "This is implemented" or "This won't be implemented"
There's no real way to discuss, even with comments

I still don't like that you can post a well-thought out FR with evidence and support and still lose rep because for other reasons you may not have considered, other people disagree with it. Yeah I know imaginary internet points, but it feels wrong.

imaginary or not, on meta.se they impact your ability to provide feedback, the way the site functions, etc.
if i keep my current trend, i'll lose the ability to see vote counts in a month or so
I could post an answer or question... but that's likely to have an adverse effect
it being meta and all

6:47 PM
UserVoice was much more well-suited, but it just had that minor flaw that only "agree" votes were possible.
If they had implemented a "disagree" vote back in 2008, it's likely this Meta site wouldn't even exist.

7:15 PM
On Physics Meta (which of course doesn't have its own rep) there's a current feature request, where people are supposed to upvote either a Yes answer or a No answer. physics.meta.stackexchange.com/q/12568/123208 MSE could use that system...

Seems it became fashionable to complain about each and every thing done at SE that might be a reason to be offended. No matter how far fetched it is. — πάντα ῥεῖ 45 secs ago

tfw you realize the bug is actually in the chrome browser and not your code

Chrome is becoming the new IE6...

i wouldn't go that far

i'm not a fan of people being offended for other people

@TravisJ Did you check Safari? Different bugs, still not your code ...

i don't need to see this message 20 times a day

Get more rep then.

@user400654 Bill Maher recently said, "You can't be more offended than the victim."

8:24 PM
@rene I think I am "suffering" from Asperger's. Quite normal for me.

Although I suppose if the victims are dead you have a bit of leeway...

I can understand bringing to attention something that offends someone who's unwilling or unable to speak up or come forward for themselves... but i'll always remain skeptical of it until they actually do.
if they're dead... can they be offended?

8:40 PM
I read "The Gulag Archipelago" as a kid. My mom said, "I don't know if he should be reading that." My dad said, "Why not?" I'm glad my mom was illiterate because she thought Batman the animated series was too dark... Of course, maybe if she read it she would have had a better sense of proportion...

I preferred books related to the sea growing up. pirates and all that
