2:00 PM
Old users aren't "Welcoming" and must be shed

@JohnDvorak I've been called that so many times this week I couldn't even count. My name being in the paper and on Slashdot/Reddit/Hacker news hasn't helped on that front. The definition as you state there is of intolerance, but the working definition as being hurled around in the street is measured by disagreement.

@Mgetz so.. take this with a pinch of salt - I'm from smaller communities

@PaulWhite I don't think drama was part of the plan, but it certainly looks like they intended to make a strong statement, and that might have been the motivation to make this far more public than it usually would have been.
3

@Caleb :/
but I felt the neglect of smaller communities (first) and SO (later) in favour of other projects was a cause
I don't have any issues saying this, probably the whole CM team knows I'm vocal about it ;)

20 hours ago, by Mgetz
@Magisch I have a friend that didn't understand what I said when I explained that I have to live with the fact that people I know and am friends with could literally be the people at a pogrom tomorrow where I die... it took them awhile to get that things aren't always simple.

2:02 PM
@Mgetz I wouldn't put it that way
but from a purely monetary value - we're worth less than SO

@JourneymanGeek I was explaining my situation in general, and indeed the situation of many minority groups. To society at large we are expendable

@Mgetz erm
Ok, I'm missing the frame of reference

Since most "power users" these days use adblockers, they're worth nothing to SE.
3

@Shadow yanno?
I can't really argue with you on that

There'll always be new users who will answer questions.

2:04 PM
I've always said you're too darned negative.
Maybe you just have perspective

Lol

@JourneymanGeek in this case the specific context is irrelevant to some extent, the sentiment is what matters.

@Mgetz I'd probably survive my site being closed down

user194636
@MadScientist Do you think the low level of communication was also deliberate? It does fit with making a strong, uncompromising statement.

I'd be sad sure...

2:05 PM
When you always expect the worst, the worst sometimes happen.

I am as, as usual, failing to communicate

@PaulWhite I have the impression it just spiralled fast
@Mgetz if its over being an actual minority
Yeah, that's serious

@JourneymanGeek Meh. I got more death threats when I first got appointed as pro-tem on C.SE ;-) Then I stuck my neck out to help Islam.SE and oh boy...

@PaulWhite No, I think it's just good sense in general to be careful about communicating when everyone is angry, odds are you'll make it worse when you're careless.

@Caleb its still not a situation that anyone should be in - especially as a volunteer

user194636
2:07 PM
@MadScientist Well I'm certainly glad they avoided that 🙂

@PaulWhite They were very deliberate in doubling down and making things worse. That's slightly different ;-)

user194636
Acknowledged

user194636
Perhaps we'll all find out the truth when Tim or Sara write their memoirs.

user194636
Could this all be an elaborate book promo.

@JourneymanGeek True. And to their (old persona's) credit SE did take some precautions for me/us early on. But they've kind of withdrawn them now. More than kind of actually; the mission is to make a different statement and whoever is making the calls now clearly didn't heed the experience of CM teams from years gone by.

2:11 PM
@Caleb Its some of the same people
and this is what kinda confuses me :/

user194636
The CMs don't make policy

They don't
and until recently the team was pretty much stripped down to the bone

user194636
Certainly. Very thinly stretched.

I think Caesar was the first actual growth of the team in a while

@JourneymanGeek Have you noticed how talkative the old timer CMs are right now? They used to wade right in whenever there was an issue. Even when they didn't know what to do and it wasn't their fault they'd dive in and start calming the waters and figure out which way to shore. The silence this time around is defening by comparison. I'm pretty sure they are all under gag orders — and have been since (or even before) this broke.

2:14 PM
@Caleb erf
that's something I missed yeah
Also why I'm active on meta :/

user194636
That's part of what makes me think the slow and very limited communication is pre-planned

user194636
> The CoC is not up for debate

@PaulWhite the original version was written on meta.
And was significantly stronger for it
So...
I don't know man

user194636
I agree with you, as you know.

@JourneymanGeek They are here, any other unrelated topics that come up they've jumped in with answers, comments, flag handling, etc. But the main brouhaha has garnered almost complete radio silence from the CMs. That is so unlike them and their respective histories I can only assume it is coordinated.
I can't speak for what you're still seeing in the TL or elsewhere, but out here it's crickets man.

2:26 PM
@Caleb I don't really know :/
@Caleb I can't say anything but eh, I don't sound particularly positive do I? ;p

Hence why I've been trying to direct at least as much of the outrage as I can in the vague direction of "corporate" because I have to assume this playbook didn't rise up out of the boots on the ground.
There have been plenty of real tangible wrongs done, but I don't think anybody out here is in a position to lay them at anybody's feet right now. Not even Sara's, as easy as her posts being the only public response to this all have made it to pick on her.

sigh
The really funny thing is I've been kinda focused on the theory of moderation when I was thinking on how to reply to a lot of it
well not SE it
vaguely meta-ish its
@Caleb there have
and the culture in SE as it used to be might have helped a lot in dulling the damage

2:44 PM
@Caleb what can they say? the are 100% in the wrong, and they know it.
All of this thing, starting from the changes to the CoC onwards has been a complete mistake after the other
wrong, changes, wrong reaction to mods that pointed it out, wrong demodding, wrong reaction to the fallout, wrong apology, wrong reaction to the second fallout.
6

user194636
@Sklivvz well they could say that 😀

I think they would, but they would get in trouble

> I don't think it is even remotely acceptable to publicly shame (or put to trial) the action of a unpaid volunteer because someone disagrees with them. (source)

user194636
@Sklivvz Oh sorry the context is CMs not SE, my error.

Wow @Sklivvz ... that is where this all went sideways. Disagreement started to be treated as something other than disagreement.

2:48 PM
yes, I think that's more or less where it started
it's that and the changes to the "be nice" policy
when they started moving from "don't hurt each other" to "here's exactly what you need to do otherwise you suck"

@Sklivvz Also true. They are way too invested now to back down. The outrage that would poor out on them if they back down now would make -900 votes on meta and a few less diamonds look like a ruptured neighborhood water main causing a street geyser vs. Mount Saint Helens.

Probably. I don't have a solution.
I think a sincere apology would be well received
I think reinstating Monica and having a fair review of what happened with the mods, and then deciding together would be well received
I think admitting the mistake with the CoC would help
etc.

@Sklivvz Sure. By the people that think the CoC change is fundamentally a good thing and they just got off on the wrong foot, it would probably.

[Comic with meeting where Sklivvz is thrown out a window]

@Caleb it's obviously not a good thing, it's an insulting thing. it's random people on the internet telling us (me) "either you behave exactly as prescribed or you are a bad bad person and we will shame you"
I'm not a bad person and I dare anyone try to shame me.
But that's exactly what happened to Monica

3:00 PM
Pretty much.

user194636
@Sklivvz Wouldn't that be great?

no - it would be fair
great? meh.

user194636
It's never to late to do the right thing.

user194636
@Sklivvz I mean it would be a great development from where we are now.

(Except that I'd disagree with you about not being fundamentally a bad person, but in the sense you mean it I understand what you're saying!)

user194636
3:02 PM
@Caleb Original sin?

Specifically, total depravity, yes.

AH, but I'm not a christian so I'm immune from original sins
;-)

user194636
ha ha ha

not even sure what I'm saying

Generic heretic

3:03 PM
I don't grudge you the space to voice your incorrect opinion ;-)
Straight up no joke I am this moment ostensibly working on my sermon for tomorrow from Ephesians 2, "you were all dead in the trespasses and sins in which you once walked ... and were by nature children of wrath like the rest of mankind." Specific passage selection about 3 weeks ago.

user194636
@Sklivvz How is skeptics going for mods?

@PaulWhite there's Oddthining that is going to be busy and Jamiec that usually does not do much

user194636
thanks

@Sklivvz that would be a start

user194636
3:18 PM
"If the dead are not raised, 'Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we die.'" Solomon's words are describing hopelessness in the face of inevitable death without resurrection. The verse preceding is proof on it's own. — Jack Douglas 2 hours ago

@Caleb I've given it some thought and I don't think "you're fundamentally a bad person" is a nice thing to say, even if it stems from your beliefs. I could imagine a lot of belief-related things an atheist could say about you, and saying them would also not be nice.
(whoops, superfluous double negative)

user194636
I think it's pretty clear they know each other, and it was friendly ribbing.

it was not pretty clear, see fig. 1

3:34 PM
If you want to ignore the context between us, then okay sure, just said on it's own that isn't very nice. But not nice and not true are not the same thing. In this case even though I only meant it as kind of a joke there it is also a serious belief I hold. I should follow it up by noting that I absolutely believe the same thing about myself. I believe myself to be cut from the same cloth in that regard as @Sklivvz, myself being the chief of sinners.
The Bible doesn't make any bones about being "nice". It does give hope for a solution ... to those that take its word for the problem.

as I said I have no idea about context between you two, and most people reading the Tavern transcripts might also not :)

user194636
@AndrasDeak I meant it was pretty clear to me, see exhibit A

I don't, but I know friendly ribbing when I see it

I need to add, I'm an atheist and I was allowed to post here. This is in large part due to the original mod team. Thanks Caleb! — Sklivvz Sep 30 at 16:40

I think we can all file this in the "I don't think anyone really gives a funk" cabinet

3:37 PM
@Sklivvz unless you feel like inventing new ones? 😁

"the unoriginal sin"

user194636
@JourneymanGeek Shouldn't you be asleep?

user194636
What's the official term for not giving a funk? Agnostic?

afornicatory

user194636
ha!

3:43 PM
Is there a way to not be "pinged" when a specific user comments under your post?

not that I know of

:/

you can only set how often you get emails about unread notifications

@Ælis No there is an ignore for chat interactions but not for Q&A sites.

All right, thanks

3:45 PM
oh, "specific user", I missed that part, sorry

@Ælis you could probably reproduce an effect like that with a sophisticated userscript
ish
But there's no ignore function implemented afaik

@PaulWhite I should

user194636
you're not doing so well

shrug
I'll survive
My sleep cycles are a little messed up from swing shifts

I guess "never" can also be considered a kind of cycle

3:57 PM
I do sleep !
I worked nights Thursday and Friday

right when you were so well-adjusted anyway

Oh I do miss actually having consistent sleep times

@PaulWhite the correct term is "ignosticism" although I'm more of a theological noncognitivist

user194636
to the dictionary!

@Caleb It makes sense. The SE director obviously (posts, press...) handling it is Sara, who is also "actively working to increase the number of women and girls becoming web and software developers and entering STEM fields." And the scape goat they chose to sacrifice is Monica. Let's sacrifice someone, but just a woman and so no one can accuse us of anything, we'll let a woman handle it. And still appear to be good and progressive!

user194636
@user58 caught up already?

No, I haven't even tried.

user194636
I don't blame you

This is the sight I was greeted with:

nice

user194636
4:40 PM
yep saw that

user194636
it's been busy eh

410
"First 10 users free" promotion of Teams was for the month of September, right?
Or did it refer to Eternal September.

user194636
I have strangely little interest in promoting SE right now

410
Does (4158*) mean 4158 new messages with at least one ping, or 4158 pings?

4:42 PM
At least one ping.

410
Then it's not so bad. :)

If I'd gotten 4158 pings, I'd have screamed and thrown my laptop across the room.

say no more

Okay, I do not have the energy to go pick at things. Were there any new relevant meta posts over the past two days that I should see?

user194636
"yes"

Q: An Update to our Community and an Apology

Sara ChippsLast week we made an important decision for our community. We removed a moderator for repeatedly violating our existing Code of Conduct and being unwilling to accept our CM’s repeated requests to change that behavior. We recognize it has caused concern in the community as a whole. We made a hard ...

This one mostly, if you didn't see it yet

and Shog's close vote test unless that's only for SO

@user58 is the left one Charcoal?

No, the Teachers' Lounge.
(The one next to it is a transcript, not an active room.)

Dang

All of those are chat rooms that I try to keep on top of.

4:54 PM
Ugh the mobile transcript sucks
Can’t see what messages are replying to...
Wow 40 people are here

also no permalink to messages in it, I think

And now I’ve scared two away :P
@AndrasDeak yeah
What’s the point of telling us that there’s a user in chat if they don’t have enough rep to chat?
Might as well just hide them as a whole, not just the icon and name

Because hiding them would be untrue. Plus consider suspended users.
plus mods can give explicit write access
Scratch that, I think suspended users are still shown with their name and avatar. Which is an interesting exception to the 1-rep change.

5:12 PM
Hello. Summing up the main issues (The Story So Far) is probably worth reading. Robert Harvey posted a nice answer there about why the TL needs to be private. But some people still don't get it.

So... linking this is always a good idea:
in Room for Cerbrus and Mark Amery on Stack Overflow Chat, Oct 2 at 13:54, by Shog9
So, the problem with the leaked transcripts is twofold:
1. There are named people in it who were far more candid about their own beliefs / identity / position than they might've been if they'd been writing publicly. That opens them up to harm in ways they really don't deserve.
2. The transcripts chosen were... Selective. There were thousands and thousands of messages in that room over the course of just a couple days - anyone thinking what was chosen tells the whole story, or even a balanced summary... Has never given an interview to a newspaper and then read what was printed.

Also, if 568 people, most of whom we don't know from Adam, have access to a chatroom, I would not expect the content of said chatroom to stay private.
That it was so up to now (with some exceptions) could be simply because people outside of TL didn't care.

I heard there were leaked transcripts, but I didn't bother to go looking for them. Not just because I have no way of knowing whether they'd been doctored, but mostly because I know there's no way I'd be able to interpret them properly without a lot of context.

@410 ...also, because generally the people there were people who could be trusted not to betray the trust placed in them.

mods aren't put there at a whim

410
5:28 PM
Aren't all diamond users eligible to join TL?

Some of the posts criticising Sara Chipp gave me the impression that she's a newbie, unfamiliar with SO culture. But I just checked her profile page, and she's been a member for 11 years, with almost 6k rep on SO itself.
@410 What are you asking? The only people with diamonds are elected mods and community managers / staff.

@PM2Ring She only joined SO as an employee recently.

410
As a counterpoint to @AndrasDeak's remark, I'm pointing out that anyone with a diamond can join TL; and diamonds are handed out for the price of asking on smallish beta sites (see: noncompetitive elections)

They're still vetted, and have to agree to the mod agreement.

@PM2Ring Sara Chipps introduced Jon Skeet to SO

410
5:33 PM
Mod agreement ~ EULA

@user58 Very true. And 6k rep's not much in over a decade. But at least she's not a total stranger to the culture. And she has coding skills, not just some management type.

@410 fortunately, no

@410 Ah. Fair point. I've only witnessed elections on the bigger sites.

People typically become mods to participate, even if very rarely they are primarily motivated by hunger for power. Either way they won't risk losing their precious status by doing something blatantly dumb and wrong

@AndrasDeak I... can't parse your first sentence.

5:36 PM
sorry, let me reread and try again

Aw man, people are talking a lot and I can't catch up
That was supposed to be my job

OK: People typically become mods to participate in their respective sites, by wanting to help and lead the community, and keep it tidy. That being said, every now and then there are mods who want to become mods as a trophy, rather then wanting to do something good. These people aren't necessarily motivated by participation, but they also wouldn't want to lose their diamond (for their own reasons)
@user58 is that ^ clearer?

Yes, and broadly accurate, I suppose.

@AndrasDeak It's much rarer than you think though. Those people don't stick around much.
Just grab the diamond and go uninterested in a matter of months or a couple of years.
Wait.

@M.A.R. rarer than "very rarely"?

5:38 PM
We know an SO mod that seemed like they ran for mod for "wrong" reasons. I was rather upset when they managed to get elected. But over the years, they seem to have mellowed a bit, and have made lots of positive contributions to the site.

@AndrasDeak Well, "every now and then" is not that rare to me

Too bad :P

Ur face is rare
And I meant that to sting

You're a rather ineffective troll. :P

@user58 Did you mean that to sting too
Go tell him

5:42 PM
Ur face is well done

@rene no u

I'm faceless

You're that big hungry guy from Spirited Away?
He was so cool.

You kids & your txtspk. Whenever I see "Ur" I think of the ancient city of Ur

@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog re; meta.stackexchange.com/posts/63791/revisions - Tim wrote "obsolete for removal"; why then did you edit it to "unfriendly/unkind"?

@user58 1. The "obsolete" flag no longer exists. 2. As pointed out in Tim's statement, use of the meme is not in line with the Code of Conduct, so I opted to use "unfriendly or unkind" instead of "no longer needed".

"obsolete" == "no longer needed"

"no longer needed" exists, though.
I don't see why you felt the need to specify a specific flag to use at all. If Tim wrote to simply flag it "for removal", there's no need for you to decide what flag to use and edit that in unilaterally.

perhaps Tim doesn't know the flag system that well

I'm going to assume you're being facetious.

The nicest main site is apparently Italian Language where the lowest score is -6

main sites don't matter much because most things with many downvotes will eventually be put out of their misery
meta sites are more interesting for accumulation of votes

@AnneDaunted That's a lot more cynical than I'm willing to be in this case. I can't visualize something that cold and calculating as a team effort. This is a more complicated series of bad ideas and bungled affairs that have built on each other.

@410 dang, big jump between MSO and SO
I guess that’s to be expected
