@rene @Tinkeringbell We're thinking of booking a connection through Amsterdam Airport Schiphol on the way to India. Have you gone through it, and is it good?

Looks like it's a new feature in Gmail (latest version). If we didn't get a reply within 5 days, it'll be added on top of our inbox and if opened, will show a link to send a mail asking for follow up

Q: What does constructive criticism of a design change look like?

Jon EricsonLast week we rolled out the new network theme to several sites. Some of these sites had beautiful designs previously and now have a less striking look. Unsurprisingly, the response to these changes has been somewhat very negative. Even before Joe posted our master plan back in March, this has bee...

@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog Schiphol is OK (at least last time I was there 7 years ago). Keep in mind it is organised as a star so if you end up in the wrong place you don't have shortcuts. You have to go through the main building (bring your walking shoes). There are plenty of shops and restaurant and you have a view on the field to the east. The two "new" and most used airstrips are on the west though and out of view (I don't think as a passenger you reach the panaroma terrace from which you could see 5/5P)

But Schiphol isn't Heathrow

@rene Heathrow's bus terminal transfers are rather inconvenient, it appears Schiphol doesn't have those

That is right.
I was more referring to the shops / restaurants you can find at Heathrow.

@rene Yeah, I visited Terminal 5 a couple years ago and it felt like a huge mall, complete with clothing stores, restaurants of all sorts of cuisines, and even a Boots. I was at Terminal 4 last winter, and while it's not as "city-like" as Terminal 5, it still boasts an observation deck with great views of the southern runway.

6:48 AM
Yep. You'll find schiphol to be much scaled down.

@rene Meh, by U.S. standards it's bound to be good. The majority of our airports are very scaled down indeed...though there are a few exceptions.

lol
tbh, its one of those super unusual cases
There are a bunch of very interesting "hobby"/experimental OSes in various stages of development

If my memory serves right, it has spawned meta debates on 3 different sites..?

But a lot of the time "issues" are actually bugs
wait... 3?
I know SU kinda did

Oops, probably different issue
Ah, TempleOS
Yeah, too many experimental OSes >_<

eh, templeos was SO and SU I think
I'm now a little less certain whether saying templeos was "ok" was a good idea or not
in any case shrug with the reactos situation, the user who brought it up included precedent in his meta question - I found a few other examples and we treat it as per any other query about topicality on meta ;)

@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog Go with what rene said. The only times I took an airplane at Schiphol was when I was too young to remember it. Nowadays I only get there for the train/bus. I personally don't like Schiphol in that it's always full of tourists that stand in your way.

@Tinkeringbell isn't that the very definition of tourists? ;p

@JourneymanGeek Probably. I've missed more than one bus because there was someone that didn't move over/on

(And apparently is immune to 'Sorry, mag ik er even langs' AND 'Excuse me!'

I prefer to go for "opzouten godverdomme"

8:41 AM
That even works here ._.

@Bart Ehhh. That's not behavior worthy of an IPS mod! :D

I have no such constraints :D

@JourneymanGeek Yeah, well.... all it gets me is stupid looks. Maybe I should try adding non-verbal communication and just start shoving people :P

or you need to be louder ;)

@JourneymanGeek Even louder? You've never met me :P

8:44 AM
Nope ;p

Tourists are annoying.

@Bart what would be the English translation of 'viswijf'? I can scream like one :P

I guess the b-word comes closest

fishwife

@JourneymanGeek That really doesn't translate well...
:P

8:45 AM
A fishwife, fish-fag or fishlass is a woman who sells fish. In this context, the word wife means woman rather than married woman. This usage stems from Old English wif (woman) and is similar to the German Weib, also meaning "woman" (nowadays rarely used and usually in a pejorative sense). Often the wives and daughters of fishermen, fishwives were notoriously loud and foul-mouthed, as noted in the expression, To swear like a fishwife. One reason for their outspokenness is that their wares were highly perishable and so lost value if not sold quickly.Fishwives in fishing villages such as Cullercoats...
Oh I tend to be very loud and very polite.

@JourneymanGeek Ohhh... it does exist! :/ Now I feel stupid for not translating it directly :P

Oooh, didn't know that either

@JourneymanGeek I think over here, it's more used to describe a volume than the level of swearwords one uses though...

I googled the word, and remembered the term used in an old novel

I tend to be quiet, but I have a general size advantage. Non-verbal communication so to say. :p

8:47 AM
ah, I am mostly average, though a little round at the moment

Although I did once say here in Geneva, when a passenger wouldn't let me get on a fairly full bus, "either we both get on, or we both get off, your choice". :D He let me on.

@Bart Nice. :D I love it that I now travel first class in trains, and I like to just walk slowly whenever there's someone behind me that obviously wants to take a shortcut through the first class into the second class ... But only if these people were already obnoxious when boarding.

@Tinkeringbell Oh god, you've pointed out a pet peeve of mine. When I still commuted to Lausanne every day, we always had those bastards who "accidentally" got into 1st class, making their way to 2nd while we were still waiting at the door outside ... grrrr

@Bart Trains are fun... :P I love it when people with second class tickets expect you to stand up for them on a very full train, in first class...

:D I love trains. If there was a better connection to the east of NL, I would easily take it over an airplane.

8:55 AM
@Bart Yay! Someone that understands :P I sometimes travel to France or England by train, and most of the people I know are all 'why don't you just take an airplane'... But I like the drive and it's way more relaxing than a plane.

Oh god yes. And legroom!
People always ask me why I don't travel more ... did a trip to Marrakesh last year. 3 hours in a plane with my knees stuck. I had 2 bruises on my knees for weeks

@Bart heh, careful picking of emergency exit seats works there

Myeah, but more expensive and often not available if you're not very early

@Tinkeringbell european express trains like the TGV rock
@Bart not much more IME

I'm fairly short, so legroom isn't a problem (often). Unless you have those really old trains here in the Netherlands, where you are seated facing someone else. Those don't have enough room, and you have to put your feet underneath the seat.

8:58 AM
and we tend to pre-book Seats anyway.
most of our flights are short tho
4-5 hours

@JourneymanGeek Yeah, those are great. I took one from Schiphol to Paris once, and from there a TGV to Brittany (can't remember the station name). I loved the entire trip, including the three hours I had to switch to trains :)

@Tinkeringbell if I go to france again, I'd actually prefer the trains to planes cause... one can look outside ;)
and most of my more fun friends are around odder, smaller places

TGV is great. We have a direct connection to Paris here. Bit over 3 hours. And in general trains in Switzerland are great.

@Bart arn't most of them vaguely about the same now?
like there's the TGV and the germans kinda build a standardish train a lot of other places use?

Don't really know. All I know is that trains are really punctual over here, and they apologize for a 3 minute delay :D
But German ICE is good as well indeed

9:03 AM
(also I am sad I never got to see the classic orange TGVs :( )

@Bart Apologies don't help though :P There's way too many 3 minute delays over here.

lol
UK rail... is often hours
I ended up travelling mostly by budget airlines or buses there
I wonder if megabus is still a thing

Haha, it used to be so bad in NL that when I took my daily train to university, I would be upset if they were on time.

@JourneymanGeek megabus?

@Tinkeringbell bus equivilent of budget airlines
cheap, pickups at odd places and you book ahead of time

9:05 AM
@Bart Yeah. Because then you'd arrive way too early and be sad because you could've slept for half an hour longer :P

Megabus is a long distance coach (Intercity bus service) operator operated by the Stagecoach Group. It commenced operating in August 2003, initially in the United Kingdom, and later expanding into Europe. Some services link with Megatrain services, also operated by Stagecoach. Advertised fares start at £1 with a 50p booking fee, using a yield management model. == History == === 2003 to 2005 === Services from London to Oxford commenced on 4 August 2003, and from Edinburgh to Glasgow and Perth and Glasgow to Dundee were added one month later. During November 2003 routes from Manchester to Liverpool...

@JourneymanGeek Ahh. We have something like that, it's called Flixbus
Flixbus (styled "FLiXBUS") is a brand which offers intercity bus service in Europe and the United States. Launched in 2013 following the deregulation of the German bus market, Flixbus aimed to establish an alternative to carpooling and Deutsche Bahn, the German state-owned railway. In 2015, after the merger with the competing startup MeinFernbus, Flixbus controlled 71% of the German market (measured in kilometres driven by the company). Flixbus is now rapidly expanding across Europe. The company's investors include General Atlantic, Holtzbrinck Ventures and Silver Lake Partners. == Business... ==

at least it's not CrazyBus...

@YvetteColomb cute :) The patchiness is normal for the breed? (/me knows nothing about horses)

@YvetteColomb The way that's framed, it's tempting to caption that "the headless horseman"

The Australian mafia puts horsemen's heads in people's beds

12:26 PM
@Bart not horsemen beds in people's heads?

@ShadowWizard you know too much.

I know my beds...

@TimPost I've sent you a mail. Can you please check it with shipper

user310756
@Bart oh she was born in the middle of the night in our worst winter storm of the year and lay trapped in the mud and wasn't found until the morning. She had patches rubbed off her skin. They've grown back now. The fur is black underneath.

@OptimusPrime For that kind of thing you'll need to contact team@stackoverflow.com

@TimPost yeah. I sent it to both tpost and team @stackoverflow.com

They'll get to the bottom of it.

user310756
@OptimusPrime with that gap, they won't receive it :p

@TimPost Thanks. btw usually how many days it'll take to get a reply? I mean what's the size of the queue?

user310756
@Bart yeh we're upside down and back to front

12:34 PM
Asking because DHL told me that they'll wait till 16th of this month
After that, they may proceed legally
If I get a response from SO, I can proceed further

@OptimusPrime A few days, usually.

@OptimusPrime Well, I guess we now need RO/CM/devs to move/purge this image, too much PI...

@SomewhatMemorableName Only PI is my address. That's somewhat incorrect
zip code is incorrect

Huh, how did it reach you then? :)

Idk
still a mystery
They sent me a letter via speed post and I got it.
In case of package, I collected it from their office

Still, I don't know how the letter reached me

@AaronHall I don't even know what to flag that

I could fill in the blank and see a potential spam on that post...
(effect of seeing more spam than good Q/A on Stack Exchange)

it could be
its certainly nonsense
could it be R/A?

Certainly is

@JourneymanGeek it's certainly not an answer...
Calm down, everybody... it's not like the world's coming to an end... https://t.co/Vomovv1SX4

@AaronHall that's an obvious flag
but RA flagpiles would make it go away faster?

mod deletes make it go away fastest...

yup, assuming a mod sees it

I saw it, but there's no delete button for me...
11 downvotes and 55 minutes later... it's gone!

I swapped my NAA for a R/A ;)

I was going to as well, but I suppose you beat me to it.

4:43 PM
Welp, just bought Google Cardboard...

@Shog9 I think I may have discovered a little flaw in the flag ban algorithm. I was allowed to flag a post as spam just recently, which I believe is because one of my old helpful flags just became more than seven days ago, which means that the overall amount of flags being handled in the last seven days became less than 10, which means you're ineligible for a ban.
The flag was immediately marked helpful, which pushed my handled flag count over 10 and I got banned again even though my last flag was marked helpful.

certainly not as good as Vive, but hey... IT WORKS!

5:55 PM
> Flaggers with a recent (past 7 days) flagging history consisting of at least 10 handled flags where >= 10% of flags were declined will see the following when they flag:
So I'd guess your percentage marked declined is still over 10 percent?

Correct, @TylerH. Also it's a rolling 7 days, so a bunch of flags marked helpful on Monday followed by a bunch of flags declined on Tuesday can still result in a ban next Tuesday. — Shog9 ♦ Apr 3 at 22:44
@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog lots of discussion of this on that thread ^

This seems like a bad system.

Also, I picked a horrible quote. The percentage should be over 25 percent to hit the ban. Sorry!

6:48 PM
@Shog9 The situation here is different: a helpful flag can result in a ban if you had enough past declined flags.

@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog That's not different. That means in the rolling 7 day window you still haven't had enough helpful flags.

@Shog9 ^^

@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog Well, if you only had 9 flags, of which 3 were declined and then got a helpful one... that puts you at the 10 flags count but within the ban realm.

7:04 PM
@Catija True, and that's what happened.

So, why should your tenth flag being helpful make you exempt from the prior three being declined?

@Catija Not saying that I should be exempt. Just saying that there is no warning. The only warning that users with less than 9 handled flags within the past 7 days get is if the last one to be handled was declined - if that isn't the case, then there is no warning of an impending ban if another flag gets handled.
@Catija Also, could you please tag the above question as completed?
