9:02 PM
walking away slowly
falling face down on @rene's new root

@canon Why is that?

@Shadow I have no clue if all wounds healed yet :-/

@canon why? What happened now?

@Shog9 Do you happen to know details about the engineering manager position for Stack Exchange, Inc.?

beyond what's in the listing?

9:06 PM
@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog Interested?

@Shog9 I know of someone who's interested in that position; they pretty much meet the requirements (12 years in development, 6 years in management), but their development experience isn't in Web development. Since the primary role of the job is management, will that be a problem?

I suspect the management skills are more relevant here; they're not going to be writing code.
that said... They should probably have at least used the Web.

In stackoverflow.com/company/work-here/1098165/engineering-manager it says "You have a solid full-stack web development background (5+ years). It may be a few years since you’ve been a dev, but you still have a pragmatic attitude to technology and know how to take on complex projects and get them done."

I believe a full degree in philosophy and psychology could well be of an advantage. @TimP?

9:09 PM
Omit the bolded portion from the job listing page, and replace with just "development", and they'll more than meet the requirements

@πάνταῥεῖ For engineering manager?

@ShadowWizard I just caught up on what appears to be continued growing pains, or mixed meta community reception

@Catija Yup! Definitiely.

@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog Does it hurt to apply either way?

we don't hire people who can tick off a checklist. Either they know how to apply what they know to our situation and can demonstrate it, or they don't/can't.

9:11 PM
Their development experience is mostly with embedded systems

Manager == Bridge builder

@user134300 Meaning?

@user134300 LOL

I'm aggressively right-wing in the sense that I'd like everyone to stay off my goddamned lawn. Damn hippies and their loveapaloozas...

@user134300 Follow needs, not ideologies!

9:14 PM
I think lawns are a waste of land. Not sure which wing that puts me in.

"full stack web development" is a modern euphemism for "understands all the pieces that go into getting bits off storage and onto screens thousands of miles away."
It's a *necessary* euphemism because there are lots of people who've specialized in areas of that but don't quite grok how they all fit together and/or have very unfortunate assumptions about how much knowledge the bits they don't specialize involve.

What I do with my lawn is my business, lefty! Stop trying to redistribute my land!

your rights end at the point where the wind drifts across my land, robber baron!

We have lawn mowers though :3

Hot green tea needed anyone?

@Shog9 I had to explain to my boss earlier this week that a full stack developer that's actually strong in every facet is becoming more and more rare... and expensive. People are picking individual tiers and specializing therein... to the point where you've got UI/UX people who don't code.
@Shog9 TO INDUSTRY! #monocle #champaign

wait, is passionfruit really canonical?
that sounds off.

9:17 PM
Oh "passion" fruit sounds good in particular :3

@Shog9 But what they're mainly looking for is management experience?
As I said, the person I'm talking about has mostly done embedded systems development.

Passionfruit is pretty common for flavored iced tea.

@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog what we're looking for is someone who can manage multiple teams in a way that gets around the inherent tendencies toward siloing / feudalism that emerge in growing organizations.

@Shog9 I believe they can do that

IOW, we need someone who is good with helping people work together
it's a lot harder than it sounds

9:20 PM
wow, did you just call your developers serfs? Good stuff :P

@Sonic "Embedded systems" means what in particular. Managing and including the hardware production people as well?

@Catija Nice accidental pun though :D
@Shog9 Explain "Lil' Bobby Tables" to a frontend dev in nice words ;-)

@Catija Fruit? In tea? This place is turning into Gomorrah.

Let's try another one

9:29 PM
Hey... I didn't say I like it, personally... it's just common... I think it's an abomination, myself...

Passionfruit belongs in daiquiris with little umbrellas

I'd prefer earl grey, but that seems to be reserved.

These kids with their jalapeno-cacao bourbon....

@Catija I got a newfound obsession for iced fruit tea with boba on coming to Austin

Earl Grey and Lady Grey are both nice. And actually, make really interesting iced varieties. I'll also drink just plain "black" tea, like Lipton.
@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog I've only ever had that once.

9:32 PM
Where'd you get it from?

@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog Um... someplace in ChinaTown Center?

I love the bergamot citrus flavor. Not too bitter, more fruity.

Bambu?

Name of the shop :P drinkbambu.com

9:35 PM
I might stop by over there sometime this coming fall

@Catija Brew it myself if I feel need for it.

@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog Should be easy to get there. Single bus, even. There's a stop right outside the shopping center and the MT Supermarket is an awesome place to get snacks.
... also, I love the name of the store "MT Supermarket"... because it's ... funny.

@Catija Yeah, I remember passing by that while taking the MetroRapid
@Catija I...don't get it

@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog Say it out loud.
MT -> "empty" Empty supermarket doesn't do you much good, does it?

Ah, now I got it.

9:39 PM
@Catija Supermarkets seriously improved about that need for "snacks" recently. I really love those falafel wraps, they offer at my nearest supermarket recently.

@πάνταῥεῖ This is a Chinese market, so they specialize in stuff from East Asia... I go there when I need more pocky and Japanese candy.

Sounds yummy as well.
Wasabi crunchy choclit' frogs ;)

Um... yeah... sounds great :P

Given that I'm now supposed to cook in my own apartment rather than go to dining halls, I'll be making many, many more trips to grocery stores.

9:44 PM
Oh, not staying in a dorm next year?

Nope, moving to an apartment

Tea brewing equipment available?
(hopefiully)

@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog Still near campus? I'm a fan of the HEB at Hancock (41st and Red River).

@Catija Yes...in a new building a couple blocks west of the Dobie tower
They constructed a new Target in Dobie

Ah. Hmmm... well... more food options over there, I guess.

10:01 PM
I am pretty sure a "Crunchy Frog" meth labor could be installed just anywhere ;)

10:19 PM
sd tpu-

Wow how the hell is that question open
SD K

@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog are you a footer person?

10:44 PM
@Catija ok, here you go:
0
A: What is the site-wide ratio of deleted comments?

Shog9Ok, here are some quick stats: Over the past 365 days, 12,681,170 comments were created. Of these, just about 10% were deleted... For the following reasons: Reasons DeletedComments --------------------------------...

@Shog9 I was just looking at it. :D
"Moderator discretion" is mod deletions without flags?
Doesn't look like a huge change over the last month. Are the dates in the chart the comment deletion date or the posting date?

posting date
oh... that's what I forgot

Yeah. The deletion date is probably more interesting?
Heck, while I'm sure it's not on the scale to cause much of a blip, but many of the comments people were posting about in here are way older than this last year.

no, not that. I was gonna link to this: meta.stackoverflow.com/questions/367768/…
which provides a closer view of flags, including flags per month as a ratio of comments created per month (NOT flags created and later flagged)
both are useful bits of information, but for different reasons

11:25 PM
Ah. Interesting. I wonder what it looks like now that there's some distance between the post and now.
