@HTTP No, comment flags are really easy to deal with. It was more that I had other things to do that took time away from resetting up that particular environment.

Note also (just found out), if you manage to get 200 rep on a team but do not yet have 200 rep on the main site, you'll get the association bonus. This isn't any different than getting it if you had 200 rep on, say, Mechanics SE. However, you'll still have to take care to not get caught voting up your coworkers too much on the public site, as those votes will be reversed just like any others (and you'll still probably get suspended from the public site for voting shenanigans). Or, tl;dr: Association bonus works as if a team were a separate SE site. — Tim Post ♦ 1 hour ago

@Catija Subjective sites are hard. Some of them succeed and produce great results, but they have a much higher risk factor.

For example Christianity and Skeptics are very far apart in worldview, but both have clear expectations for their answers that constrain them in helpful ways that prevent them from just turning into yet-another place to argue on the internet.

Anonymous

IOTA's community is so aggressively anti-academic and anti-intellectual that they got thrown in for somehow taking a more-or-less objective topic and turning it into a pool of PR and attacks on actual researchers.

Anonymous
@Ano You are correct.

I'm not really sure that you can necessarily use beta status to determine where a site is... there are several "graduated" sites that met the requirements long ago... Skeptics... for example... but has fewer questions per day than equally old but beta sites like parenting.
@JeremyBanks That just sounds like an argument to shut them down entirely.

Anonymous
I was trying to post-hoc rationalize (i.e. bullshit) a criteria that would include all of the sites I have issues with.

Anonymous
@Catija I think so. But I expect them to die on their own, with any luck.

IPS has been complaining about the HNQ since we entered public beta... and one of the things I realized is that it's a blessing and a curse... but we need to learn how to structure things without blaming our problems on the HNQ... That's coming at it from the opposite angle...
But I think there are user scripts that allow you to block HNQ entries from specific sites that you get to configure?

Anonymous

I admit I expected IPS to be a disaster, but the community proved me wrong. The Hot questions tend to be pretty good from this outsider's perspective.

@JeremyBanks I'm still not sure it's not one but I appreciate the vote of confidence. I think we have some solid structure and something to build on but it's going to take a lot of work to really refine the site and find what it's meant to be.

@JeremyBanks from a regular's perspective they cause a lot of headaches

@JeremyBanks The Iota site doesn't seem to have too much of that yet. The greater Iota community, sure. But that's the case for so much in the cryptocurrency space

...that may be exacerbated by the amount of comments that I wade through
although I've slacked off with that

Personally, the simple fact that they use ternary math, and try to defend that choice, is enough to distrust them entirely. But then, I don't trust any cryptocurrency anyway

8:32 PM
@SmokeDetector f

What's ternary math?

Balanced ternary is a non-standard positional numeral system (a balanced form), used in some early computers and useful in the solution of balance puzzles. It is a ternary (base 3) number system in which the digits have the values –1, 0, and 1, in contrast to the standard (unbalanced) ternary system, in which digits have values 0, 1 and 2. Balanced ternary can represent all integers without using a separate minus sign; the value of the leading non-zero digit of a number has the sign of the number itself. Different sources use different glyphs used to represent the three digits in balanced ternary...
The broken hash function as a copy-protection mechanism is another absurd thing the iota devs did

by ternary math do you mean that they use GF(3^n) as the basis of their home-brew hash?

Heads up: We've got maintenance scheduled for March 17th. More details can be found at https://meta.stackexchange.com/q/307744

@JohnDvorak as far as I read, all math involved is implemented as ternary math

8:45 PM
please don't call it ternary math

@SNAFU I read that as "help us:" and it's probably still not wrong
2

user315433
Eh, all these fixed base representations are too antropomorphic. Factorial number system is where it's at. goes to purpose Factorcoin

You should turn the entire site green for maintenance mode... and St. Patrick's Day.

@MadScientist Of course, "copy protection" is the justification they came up with after it was shown to be broken, because they still have yet to provide a real security model. That is to say: IOTA's correctness is unfalsifiable because they refuse to define it and move the perceived goalposts in response to concrete criticism.
