hmm. Not that I want to bug anyone about it, nor do I need to know who, but I'm curious to whether the 'formal' mod removal process mentioned here has ever happened meta.stackexchange.com/questions/151606/…

12:50 AM
I remember some drama on Physics.se, but I don't know if anything has come out of it

And the Patriots score their first touchdown!

1:28 AM
ahh, handegg
@iDebug if I may meta.stackexchange.com/questions/306624/… is not very nice :(
not everyone has exemplary vocabulistics and grammarianism.

@JourneymanGeek Question was closed, so I deleted my comments.

@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog I didn't ping you about a specific issue with comments though

@JourneymanGeek Just thought I'd mention that. My second comment was after a (now-deleted) comment from the OP saying he "improved" the question.

(and yeah, I could flag it, but I figure I could take the opportunity to address a specific issue, both now and on the longer term)
@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog but but. This isn't about you at all

@JourneymanGeek When did I say it's about me?

1:39 AM
I mean, I am literally trying to have a word with a fellow user about a specific comment that has nothing to do with you.
"Hi - this comment is not cool" <other guy> "I deleted all my comments"

This isn't the first time @iDebug:

An easy way to identify Journeyman Geek's post: Go through it and check for it's misspelled as its. If there are a lot of them then there's a good chance the post is written by JG. — iDebug 3 hours ago
Jan 28 at 20:09, by Sonic the Anonymous Hedgehog
@iDebug This comment is inappropriate. Journeyman Geek suffers from dyslexia, and thus ends up making grammar mistakes. It's not good to criticize it.

@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog and that was handled.

Couldn't that be indicative of a pattern, though?

No point digging up the past - I'm dealing with present comments, and hopefully future things.
shrug I'm not a mod here. Just a fellow user going "dude, not cool"

Same thing applies here:
Jan 28 at 20:17, by Sonic the Anonymous Hedgehog
I know what you're feeling...I too used to make brutally honest comments like that, in real life. Don't worry too much about it, move on, and just don't make that type of comment in the future. Everything's OK.

1:42 AM
See, you're quoting yourself. In an issue, that to be fair, is in public, but has absolutely nothing to do with you.

Just because I chime in in a discussion, in general, doesn't mean that the discussion is about me.
That particular quote was directed toward iDebug

@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog the ideal here is "hey, not cool" - I get a response, he's aware, its done.
Bringing up past things, and such kinda makes it harder to actually deal and move on
which is my ideal here.
I've actually been moderating communities for, holy carp 14-15 years now, and really there's no benefit in actual recrimination for minor things
so "hey, this is an issue" is kinda where I want to stop
(aka, this totally is not helping)

@JourneymanGeek Holy fish
(sorry, couldn't resist saying that)

I mean, if we're going to drag these things out - I'd just flag

@if.... I used to just link, but started oneboxing after a tip from Shog

@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog I've told someone else this before - if you keep quoting yourself, something is wrong.

user315433
Speaking of chat, maybe balpha can return to work on it now?

hah
Isn't there something massive coming up?

user315433
The Design team doesn't have a manager anymore, so they should be free to do what they want. Like xkcd.com/303

1:55 AM
Potentially site breaking even?

user315433
Docs removal, but balpha isn't in it.

ehh, by the sound of it, this seems planned/organised so I suspect they'd probably hire/promote as needed

@JourneymanGeek Err but I didn't mean ...

@iDebug Yeah, I know. That was why I was trying to sort it out quietly

user202362
Bot for SE HR ...

1:56 AM
Sorry about the mess :(

I just picked a random characteristic from SE, that all sites are in English
@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog Why you think I'm targeting Journyman?

@iDebug I think he means being less than polite about language usage issues in general

@JourneymanGeek That's right

while I was like "ehhh, I don't think he quite realises how that sounds"

user202362
@if.... I have a serious question to ask you, would you ever consider using a female porn star as your avatar?

1:57 AM
@JourneymanGeek There isn't a common thing across most SE sites except for being English-only.

well it sounded like you were saying his english needed work ;p
Phrasing? I donno

Surely not the thing I was thinking of...

da!
I realise that it could be interpreted differently!

@JourneymanGeek Yep that's the issue.

And that's why I wanted to go with a headsup over a flag.

2:02 AM
Well I have nothing to say.

Which is fine too! This is one user just pointing out something to another.

TBH, Sonic's pointing out my past (sarcasm) did annoy me a bit.

I was unhappy about that pointing out
Felt it blew up a relatively small issue bigger than it needed to be.

Can't delete?
@JourneymanGeek Same thoughts.

Not without a CM I'm afraid

2:05 AM
@JourneymanGeek ROs can't?

TBH, I don't really take that much offence over it.
If I feel hurt, I'll let you know
hm.

@JourneymanGeek Me too, but only for the first time, not repeated.

I THINK I could move. But I'd need a place to move it too, and the chimney feels wrong

That's fine for the first time, since everyone makes mistakes.

@iDebug Sorry about that.

@iDebug heh, I've been living with dyslexia my whole life. Unlike certain other brain oddness, the stuff people notice dosen't have a cool explanation or a fan club.
We just work through it.
I'm not going to go "I will spell like that, I have dyslexia" I go "ugh" and try to fix it.
unrelatedly...
but not really sure enough to hit it with my golden rubber hammer of dupehammering +1

@JourneymanGeek I don't think that's a great use of Chaos Control, because the former one is about questions, while the latter one is about answers.

2:24 AM
@JourneymanGeek And now for something completely unrelated: I recently took one of those online English dialect tests, and I was matched most closely to a Singaporean dialect. Do I speak in a Singaporean dialect?

Well, at least the second best match was Southern Californian, which is the correct one

@JourneymanGeek SFF?

@Catija I was under the impression those happened "informally" - something bad enough happened that the CM team had to take action.

@Catija Did you see that part where the Eagles scored a touchdown, even though his foot was clearly outside the boundary?

2:29 AM
(also I think that happened before the other case of mods being removed that I remember but that was pretty ugly/well documented)

Hmmmm... maybe... I wasn't involved. My guess is that it's probably there as a methodology but in reality, it's not necessary?

Ya
Its one of those things I'd never want to see, personally

@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog ... no. We're not watching football. We're watching Altered Carbon

hah
DLed that...
kinda trying to catch up on a ... 18 year old show?

And the whole 2/3rds... that'd sort of only really work on bigger sites with more mods.

2:31 AM
(do we count that by first episode or last?)

First?

ah, show had 5 seasons
(watching andromeda. Its charmingly bad)
the ships are insanely detailed. And look like cheap plastic

@Catija on the other hand, in a site that runs well, mods actually self police to an extent

user315433
Do you mean they police each other?

2:52 AM
I've sometimes gone, "hey, this decision seems odd... what's happening" and the other mod's either reversed it, or pointed out something I missed

@JourneymanGeek I think that there are ways to prevent people from becoming mods who are inappropriate... that maybe didn't used to exist.

@Catija well, in theory, on a beta site, that's the CMs. On a mature site, it ought to be the community

we really should've introduced the tire run sooner; that weeds out a lot of poor mods

Eh... people often vote for popular users... and they don't always make good mods.

2:55 AM
@Shog9 would have weeded me out

Does slave labor count as work?

There have been numerous discussions about adminship and age over time. Some Wikipedians believe that certain users are being inappropriately discriminated against because of their age, while others believe it acceptable to take age into consideration when deciding to support or oppose a user who is under the age of 18. Candidates under the age of 15 have been especially controversial – sometimes, their age is the only reason for an oppose vote, and bureaucrats do not discount these votes. To some, this constitutes ageism – discrimination based on age. Others believe this is a legitimate practice...

@Catija depends on who's counting.

> Face it, a 50-year-old Wikipedia editor with a PhD may not respond positively to a 15-year-old, who is too young to get a job at Wal-Mart, but becomes an admin on Wikipedia. Between those two options, where can this 15-year old do the most damage? At a single Wal-Mart where they might interact with 100 people on a given day or on the seventh most visited site on the web?
> A single mistake might impact a local Wal-Mart, but the odds of it making the local news are slim. Even if it does, people will think "Stupid teenager". On Wikipedia, a single mistake might garner national news in a heartbeat. While it is true that anybody of any age can make a mistake, there is a legitimate concern that if a person in a position of authority is revealed to be a teenager, it would look doubly bad for Wikipedia because of social norms and expectations surrounding age.

@Shog9 More or less... most likely to have nothing to do and see improving the site as their mark on the world.

3:01 AM
@hichris123 I'm sure a lot of mods probably see it the same way, regardless of age

user315433
Problem is, the teens of early years of SE grow up and get busy with college and such things.

user315433
And there aren't many to take their place because today's teens see SE as something that simply exists, like Wikipedia or Youtube.

Clearly, the next step is compulsory enlistment

@JourneymanGeek Fair enough, but from experience being a mod seemed like a high position of responsibility (which is easy to claim when you can't even legally get a job).
Then you realize that while it is a position of responsibility, it's just one part of the world.

@hichris123 tbh, I became a mod cause people kept bugging me about it ;p

3:03 AM
I don't know... I remember who I was as a teen... I wouldn't have been a problem user but I would definitely have had issues knowing what priorities to focus on...

In my previous incarnation I was a teen

@JourneymanGeek I remember that; went to check if I voted for you but then I remembered I have nowhere close to 300 rep on SU.

@Catija I'm not quite sure how I got into moderation, honestly. Started using SO as I didn't understand integer overflow, and somehow that spiraled into becoming a mod.

In other news, I've switched from hydrogen peroxide to hydrogen peroxide + peracetic acid for mold control, thus deviating from the path of the lifehacker

@hichris123 I tried and failed twice. Convinced the CMs to give me a protem diamond eventually... now two.

wait, back up a sec... We didn't make understanding integer overflow a requirement for becoming a mod??!

@Shog9 heh, half and half white vinigar and water works well

3:11 AM
I hope not... I don't even know what it is.

@JourneymanGeek I save the half and half for my coffee, but that's the brilliance of my new mold-killing friend: you can mix it up cheap by just dumping some concentrated peroxide into a jug of white vinegar.

@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog We don't have one. I don't watch live TV... and I don't care about football...

(I didn't join the room though... it's... scary)

@SensibleAlexander I used to play in there... but it's not the same room any more.

@Catija Yeah, ours back home can't receive KNSD (NBC San Diego) for some reason, while it sometimes receives KNBC (Los Angeles)
@Catija The only reason why I wired a television is because UT Housing pays for HBO
And even if you don't have one - our Internet connection is 1000 Mbps, over Ethernet

I'm living with a 10 Mbps mobile broadband 😆

@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog We have HBO Go... no cable.

@SensibleAlexander They cap your bandwidth, though - you are only allowed 10 GB per week, or for $22 per year you can get 50 GB per week, or for $60 per year you can get 1000 GB per week

@Shog9 Out of curiosity, why reopen that question?

5:36 AM
Why close it?

@Shog9 Because the problem can no longer be reproduced, changes to the system have rendered it obsolete, and that if this problem comes up again, a new question should be asked?
Where do I go to request people to write user scripts for SE? On Meta itself?

I think more often than not, you just do a FR or something, and someone ends up writing a userscript to solve it. I don't think 'specific' requests work very well

@JourneymanGeek The feature was already requested, and just declined.
Should I edit it to say that I'm looking for a user script? It's not my own request

"It's not my own request" then its not your place to edit it

@JourneymanGeek So then are you implying that I should post a duplicate?

5:42 AM
nope

@JourneymanGeek Then how would I go about requesting someone write a user script for it?

Please don't assume meaning - I'm saying "asking for a userscript is not a good fit for meta sites, in my opinion"
You kinda don't? Or you happen to be in a place where 1) there's people who write these things 2) have sufficient motivation, it just happens

MSE, or this chat?

Beats me, I'm never looking for userscripts.

user315433
@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog Straight-up requests for freelance work but for free are probably not welcome anywhere.

user315433
But asking on Software Recommendations whether a script exists may well move someone to write it. Worked for me.

That's one way to put it, yes.

user315433
Asking whether there is a way to do X on Meta, without conditioning it on a script, is also on topic (support), and may well produce a script.

Just try not to make it an intentional dupe, cause folks will close it ;)

Hmm, I just tested something out. If there is a pending edit to a CW post, and you don't have enough rep to review edits, there will be no sign of a pending edit in the Android app, and I can edit it and automatically reject it as an edit conflict. Is this already reported? (In the desktop UI, you get an error message before it lets you open the editor.)

@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog no bug there. The app does not show any sign that there is pending edit, it's by design, or more accurate lack of such a feature. And if someone starts editing before edit is suggested, then submits the edit after other edit was suggested, the later is dropped automatically with "edit conflict" reason. Also on desktop version, always been this way.

@ShadowtheHedgehogWizard Is there already a post about it?

So the only missing thing is check for pending edit in the app, but that won't be done since development is frozen.

This will fix what you mentioned.
@JourneymanGeek dupe will be closed as such, no matter if intentional or not. If intentional folks like me will also downvote it.

@ShadowtheHedgehog I have a question. If someone posts a duplicate of an existing bug or FR that contains more information or is more comprehensive, is the policy to always close it as a duplicate, or would the less informative question be closed in some cases? I've noticed the former happening a lot, and I disagree with it, which led me to voice my support towards an unpopular feature request.
My answer, by the way (contains two examples):

A: Duplicates on meta sites - sum the votes

Sonic the Anonymous HedgehogI support this. Take, for example, this feature request. By itself, it looks like a very old, outdated request from 2012 that may have since been implemented. As such, many people, including Stack Exchange employees, may overlook it. However, if you check the Linked section at the right, a secti...

@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog no rule set in stone, but yeah, better close the one with less details as dupe of the one with more details. Ideally, the older will just be edited to have better details, then no need in new report/request to begin with.

@ShadowtheHedgehogWizard Yeah, but what if the edit would essentially change the meaning of the post? For reasons I will outline, I consider that a security flaw, not just a mere feature request.
Did you take a look at the first example? Don't you think the older one should be closed as a dupe of the newer one in that case?

7:25 AM
> many people, including Stack Exchange employees, may overlook it
That's incorrect, @Sonic ^
As long as there's no status tag applied to the request (i.e. completed or declined) the staff won't ignore it.
Answers are not relevant. (assuming those aren't from SE staff who just forgot to tag.)

@ShadowtheHedgehogWizard They may look at it, but think that as it hasn't been active for over five years it's probably no longer relevant.

@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog I don't think so. Time doesn't matter.

If I try to edit it to say "update: this is still an ongoing issue", it will be rejected as "should be a comment, makes no sense as an edit".

@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog if it's different enough to change the meaning then a new question can be valid, explaining very well how it's different so it won't get closed.

@ShadowtheHedgehogWizard I want to edit that question, but my edits would drastically change the meaning of the post, from a mere feature request to a security bug report. Shouldn't I just file a new request, and then have this one closed as a dupe?
(Race condition, you just answered my question)

@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog in that case yes, start a new question.
