@Mithrandir Very well written.
I think you might be missing a word in the last paragraph of the "A Changed Outlook" section, and I think you have "of" instead of "or" in the second paragraph of the "What should I do to make my site keyboard-accessible?" section.

Morning

@Mithrandir Wrt your use of a browser without a keyboard, I use elinks for that!
I find it much better when you're going without a mouse. And faster.

@Alex Thanks, fixed.

You're welcome.

@JourneymanGeek Yeah it's unfortunate. Terrible accessibility.

Also apparently it was picked up by a couple of personalized news sites and got a couple thousand views.

Nice.

Unfortunately, most people apparently haven't read the whole thing. About 6% of 2.6k people, according to the stats I see :P

5:11 AM
How does it measure that? By how much the page was scrolled?

I assume so.

More likely to have false positives than false negatives, then.

There's a neat window manager called Ratpoison which, as its name hints, is meant to kill the mouse and be used entirely from a keyboard. It's amazing how much more productive you can be when you go keyboard-only.

@forest I find myself tending to avoid left click now, even if I'm using a device that has a working mouse.

... unless the software fully supports keyboard-only usage

5:14 AM
So, uh, thanks, flipboard, I guess?

wait until someone tweet: Stack Exchange discriminates keyboard-only users

@andmyself If you read my article, I actually listed SE in the "good" list...

@andmyself I kind of want to make such a tweet now...
Because it does impact me.
Of course, SE's view of responsiveness is the antithesis of accessibility. :P

What specific issues do you have with SE's keyboard accessibility?

For me it's more an issue of browser compatibility than keyboard accessibility.
Or rather, the issue is an indirect consequence. I use a tiling window manager, which apparently SE does not support unless I disable it and maximize the browser.
(As I've complained about god knows how many times lol)
It doesn't support zoom, it doesn't support non-maximized browsers, etc.
(Where "support" means "designed not to break while used")

@ShadowWizard wait ... since when aren't pizza's round anymore? Did I miss a memo? Anyway, was it good?

@rene noo, that's the great religious war!
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pizza_al_taglio (apparently its traditional)

Awesome, I love wars! On which side am I?

Take your pick
Square round, thin crust, thick crust, deep dish, sicillian...
or those heretics who put pinapple on their pizza. BURN THEM!
(I actually have nothing against pineapple on pizza. Just can't eat it)
Pineapple is my one food allergy

Don't go to the Azores then ...
... pineapple as breakfast and as dessert

@rene man.... that was the best pizza I ever ate. Really. It's made by a very famous chef in Israel. (well, he doesn't bake them all by hand, I mean the recipe. ;))
This is the chef ^ (sorry, no English wiki)

It's not cheap, but worth every agora.... :D

nice

@rene at best, I get a tingle
at worst, its felt like getting my mouth pierced with a million needles

that is not good, no.
Better leave them where they are

@JourneymanGeek ouch

8:42 AM
@ShadowWizard I know this cause when I was 12, I was in something called TAF club - basically the government decided fat kids needed extra exercise...
My mom would buy me... erm... watermelon or papaya after that (I don't remember)....
and they were out so she bought me pineapple...

...is that intentionally FAT backwards...?

@Mithrandir intentionally so it dosen't spell fat.
I hope

@JourneymanGeek heh, funny enough, I built the website for similar government project here in Israel. (project meant to encourage school kids to make more sport, not directly for "fat kids", but, well.. you know. :))
The Trim and Fit (TAF) programme was a weight loss programme that targeted child obesity in Singapore schools between 1992 and 2007. Introduced by the Ministry of Education, schoolchildren under the programme were educated on nutrition, calorie control, and participated in intense physical exercise and activities. == Overview == Overall, the programme was successful in reducing the obesity rate amongst schoolchildren from 14% to 9.8% by 2002. However, it came at a psychological cost of participants being stigmatised and in some cases, reportedly diagnosed with eating disorders. The TAF programme...

so I was in extreme pain and the teacher in charge of TAF was like "Oh good! You're eating healthy"
while I was like "ugh ugh ugh ugh ow ow ow"
> In 2005, a National University of Singapore study of 4,400 schoolgirls linked TAF to an increase in eating disorders. It found that girls were more likely to have poorer relationship with their parents and their female friends.
that's messed up :/

@JourneymanGeek well, good you found it in early age.... I think. :)
@JourneymanGeek heh, indeed it is. :/

9:11 AM
@ShadowWizard in theory the tinned ones should be fine
I'd eaten them before

@JourneymanGeek No pain no gain?

@forest many healthy eating options that don't involve self hurt
Ground glass for example has less calories, and probably hurts as much

My brother has fatal allergy to Mango fruit, my sister has severe allergy to soybean and most types of nuts. Having no allergy, I suspect I'm adopted. lol

Well I know for a fact you can lose weight by cutting your legs off.
Amputations should be the new weight loss fad!

@forest not really, or more like "it would be very temporary weight loss". Not walking, you'll get fat quickly. ;)

9:15 AM
(Seriously, legs are heavy!)

@ShadowWizard technically potentially fatal. You would have to have found out somehow...

@ShadowWizard Well that's why you walk on your hands. More exercise.

@forest removing the butt would reduce even more weight... no? :P

I find your logic correct yet flawed. Please stand by when the nice men in white coats get you into something a little more comfortable and transport you to a private suite with padded walls....

9:16 AM
bleh matter has weight. Being annilated by antimatter would be ultimate weight loss treatment.

@ShadowWizard Yeah but usually you die if that happens.
Though I guess skeletons are pretty light...

In the future, we'll all be floating/hovering anyway. Weight would become non relevant. :D

Wasn't that the premise of that Pixar movie with the little garbage robot?

@forest Wall-E?
Cute movie!

Yeah that was it.
With all those fat people on hovering scooters.

9:18 AM
More or less

No scooters... I imagine people floating using some internal mechanism.

@ShadowWizard I think they hand floating recliners ;p

Something that simply reduce gravity, somehow.

Negative mass?

Perhaps... I never really delved into it, that's just what I imagine. :)
(if I'll write a book, it would be part of it. :))
I wonder how deep into research science fiction authors get?

9:20 AM
If I wrote a book, I'd want everyone to be a walking skeleton. Not for any rhyme or reason, and never with explanation. It just happens to be a world of skeletons.

@ShadowWizard depends on the genre of sci fi

Like maybe it's a high school drama or a romance book.

@forest Living skeletons?

But with skeletons.
yes

but what are the skeletons of?

9:21 AM
hmm...
Sounds more like fantasy than science fiction. ;)

People. Just a world of human skeletons.
It wouldn't be either. It'd just be skeletons for the sake of it.

10:25 AM
I'm tempted to delete and see what happens now ;p

@JourneymanGeek I've reported more frivolous things before. :P
I'm thinking of reporting DPRK to the FSF because they do not provide a "written offer for source code provided with distribution of binaries" for their Red Star OS Linux-based operating system (you know, the one that watermarks documents it sees).
It's not joke! This is a serious violation of freedom from North Korea!

If one site is being incredibly slow for me, what should I do?
Clear cache?

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ clean your connection
:D
But... what site?
stealing @M.A.R's book while he's not around and switching it with this book instead

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ depends on why its slow

Well, see, I can do everything no problem
Like chatting on a Tavern
But the bloody tab keeps loading and loading
I thought the site was censored but that doesn't seem to be the case, the homepage loaded after 3 million years

1:09 PM
@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ something is blocked on your side.

Everything is super slow and the "login" button doesn't seem to work

F12 and see Network tab.
Maybe now they block all google resources?
(same as China)

@ShadowWizard I did, pressed reload and now there's a pending request that hasn't been responded to

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ but what request? To what resource?
Maybe winter bash domain is blocked?
hmm... it's under stackexchange.com so shouldn't be.

@ShadowWizard It's not an SE page

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ ohhh... voting to close as off topic
:P

Where is HackerNews when you need it?
I wish I had a Twitter account too.

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ I assume Twitter is also blocked by your government?

@ShadowWizard Of course, they wouldn't miss the satisfaction

1:30 PM
> In 2009, during 2009 Iranian presidential election, the Iranian government blocked Twitter due to fear of protests being organised.[20] In September 2013, the blocking of both Twitter and Facebook was briefly lifted without notice due to a technical error, however, within a day the sites were blocked again.
I wonder when they will block Stack Exchange too?

Yet Zarif is allowed to babble on Twitter and the media is allowed to show it off in state news

(or just shut down the internet, which is easier.)

@ShadowWizard I'm just waiting for the next Trump tantrum that will potentially end up in my account's being nuked.

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ why is that?

Right now the Democrats are a safety cushion
Keep bashing 'em

1:33 PM
How is it related to your account being nuked?

@ShadowWizard Because I've announced various times that I'm from Iran and further attempts at changing the law to be more racist could end up meaning SE couldn't provide services to me anymore
US-based company and all that
But I'm no lawyer and I'm not really interested in anything but the results

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ I don't really understand... :/
oh... you mean the fact USA ban trade with Iran?

@ShadowWizard Well what happens when someone announces they're 11?

Since SE is free for use, it's not relevant.
And I'm 10000% sure that Joel will move away from USA with the company if forced to ban users based on their gender/location/etc.

I'm saying next time the most prevalent cheeto in the world shifts focus on Iran he could impose a ban on something like that

1:38 PM
@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ that's different.
I guess Trump can buy Stack Exchange (from his private money) and then ban everyone who are not white straight males from USA who vote for him in elections, but other than that... he has no such power on SE.

Shrug
Hmm, that site's cdn seems to be blocked

CD who?

I dunno, do I look like a web developer?
But CDN is that part of the site that loads the visual stuff, right?

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ hehe, kind of :)
It hosts the static resources.
(usually needed for design and client side scripts)
Ironically, having a cdn usually means faster loading time.

1:57 PM
Custom Delivery Network

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ If it ever so happens that happens - I'd be happy to provide you with an account for an ssh tunnel at short notice, or a VPN if I can be arsed to set one up for me

@JourneymanGeek you're very generous. :)

@ShadowWizard it literally costs me nothing, @M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ is a shifty eyed... good people and this sorta thing offends me

Can't we have just a single instead of one for every version?

Windows 10 is drastically different from Windows 95...

I'm not denying that. Is that relevant for questions asked in the context of SE?

In the context of browser-specific bugs, possibly

I did manage to burn the android tag on MSO and there isn't a windows either there. Only 4 ios ones that I might get rid off as well
@Mithrandir the windows-os, yes. Beyond the API getting more functions, the OS itself isn't that much changed in its core-principles, specially not from an end-user / application perspective
anyway ... I'm out for the night, need sleep.

@ArtOfCode My ISP's blocks work in spite of that
and sometimes they manage to fail at routing
@rene ._.
why do we need a windows anything tag on MSE?

@JourneymanGeek You'd be amazed at what Windows sometimes manages to break ;)
