GOOD MORNING!
Clearly y'all have trouble waking up without a proper canine wakeup call

@JourneymanGeek I think it's time to break out the vitamin D supplements soon. It's too dark lately

jolts awake ahh wha?

5:17 AM
@JourneymanGeek i got up way earlier than when I usually get up today....

I slept till half 7
I gotta wake up 5.30 tommorrow

I set alarms for 6:43, 6:45, 6:47, and 6:50, so that I'd be able to get up :P

I set one, 6:15
At 6:30 I'm out the door and walking to the station

Alarm clocks have a "snooze" button for a reason

I have an alarm on 6.30 to wake up and another at 7.45 to get out of the house

5:22 AM
That's a lot of time to get out of the house..

> Finally, the alarm rings a third time. But just as Bob reaches for the snooze button, the clock sends the “jump and bark” signal to Sam’s collar. Shocked to full consciousness, Bob rises, grateful that his Java skills and a little trip to Radio Shack™ have enhanced the daily routines of his life.

java enabled house
I chortled

My house is smart... It stays silent when I'm waking up and doesn't try to meddle with my morning moods.

wouldn't work for me. I don't drink coffee and don't eat toast and don't have a dog

@JourneymanGeek Would it work for you?

5:37 AM
My alarm clock is smart... It rings after I leave the house.
That said... I set up my alarm at 7:35 and 8:00. Always dismiss the first one, then snooze the second thrice

@Tinkeringbell WAKE UP!!!

@rene working on that...
Thanks for the reminder

:D

Almost at the office. I can get some coffee there, with a load of sugar

now to find out how to write automated batch network share administration scripts for windows 95

IIRC net was included in W95

99% sure it is and works but I have no clue how to specify the user and domain to use

Can you run vbscript on those boxes?
Is vbs registered?

no clue
I'll have to go down and find out
machines should be down this afternoon

@Somewhat Looks like the nomination period for the Emacs election has been extended by 7 days.

6:23 AM
Just as expected...

@Magisch If that works you can create com objects and I believe WMI is avaiable as COM object. That should allow for pretty much anything you need

I wonder what they're hoping for there
Theorethically someone could go and obtain 300 rep in those 7 days and then run to give an actual choice but I'm pretty sure that's not what they want

@Magisch oO

@JourneymanGeek very old semiconductor testing machinery
costs about 1.5m€ a pop to replace and still works so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Shouldn't that site be spelled iMacs?

6:27 AM
Also, the same happened to the Korean Language election. There is one candidate there, who's standing for reconfirmation (meaning they'll only continue if they are re-elected).

@rene That hurt :(

Interestingly enough, there's been only 16 users on Emacs.SE that have posted on meta at all in the past year
With only 2 users (gilles and grace note) that have exceeded 4 posts in the past year there

One of them happens to be an employee, so effectively only one user.

@Tinkeringbell yes, it does. I'll throw sugarsticks next time

@SonictheInclusiveWerehog Employees are users too.

6:36 AM
@rene :D. I have my coffee and sugar now, so it'll have to wait ;)

Hmm, another 30 minutes before I have mine

Ugh, good luck surviving!

...230 kids... this will be fun...

Ugh, good luck surviving!

@Mithrandir What do you mean?

6:42 AM
I'm part of the team in charge of a large amount of kids on a hike.
Now on the bus.

@Mithrandir Where are you hiking?
Must be a lot of buses.

I'm not going to answer that.
Oh, typo - 130, not 230. Big difference :P
Two busses and a minibus.

@Mithrandir That's still 130 kids too many ;)

Heh

@Mithrandir How many adult supervisors to handle 130 kids?

6:48 AM
@SonictheInclusiveWerehog Not counting the couple dozen 15-16-17yos? One. At age 19.

Morning...

@Mithrandir ...and that's yourself, or not including yourself?

Emacs has had 16 users that have posted at all on meta.Emacs.SE this year and 299 users that have accessed meta at least once in the past 365 days
Usual predictions of voter turnout would mean about 20-30 voters

@SonictheInclusiveWerehog I'm 16, so not me

They don't need eligible voters if they don't even have any candidates...

6:51 AM
@Somewhat There is one candidate on Korean who's an existing moderator standing for reconfirmation

But lack of candidates means the site is unhealthy :(
Which is odd

@JourneymanGeek I mean yea, but we can't do anything about that as non members

SE doesn't have a protocol for graduated sites that later become inactive

The only reason i even have an account there is for charcoal flagging

There's no actual case of it I have ever heard

6:52 AM
@SonictheInclusiveWerehog I thought you said that was Korean Language, not Emacs?

@Tinkeringbell Fixed.

In theory a bunch of random network users could move to gain 300 reputation there and nominate, but I'm 99% sure this is not what the CM team wants in a plea for more candidates

@JourneymanGeek I'm really curious to know why that happens. Why don't people all jump at the chance of getting a diamond?
(But, tbh, I always said I didn't want to moderate either...)

Diamond = lots of poop shoveling
And some of it getting stuffed in your ears in the process

6:55 AM
@Magisch I've seen one instance of someone nominating so that the election would happen. The user did have 4k rep on the site and 7 other diamonds at the time, though, so not exactly the same.

@Mithrandir Rory Alsop?

The only user who has 7 diamonds... yep, that ^

Who else? :P

@Mithrandir Define lots. The impression I get is that most sites are actually pretty low traffic when it comes to flags?

IPS.SE comment flags >>>>> Anime.SE total flags?

6:57 AM
@Somewhat I have no idea ;)

@Tinkeringbell Oh sure, but you're still taking on the responsibility, which means that if things do explode suddenly you have taken responsibility. People don't always want that.

@Mithrandir True... responsibility isn't fun ;)

@Somewhat *Mith's IPS comment flags

Still makes sense ;p

It does look like an interesting question to get data on ;) Nr. of flags per day/week/month per site ;)

6:59 AM
Pretty sure Shog put that in the TL at some point
Unless that was average flag handling time

I'll search the transcript :)

(sorry, non-mods)

@Mithrandir yeah but I assume the CM team would take an extremely dim view (network suspension level) on someone who moved to gain rep just to nominate while the election was ongoing

@Tinkeringbell well - it's a lot of work
And you can do a lot of stuff sans diamond

7:18 AM
@JourneymanGeek is it?
On a small site like Emacs you'd never even hit 30 mins a day
I can't imagine they're getting more then 50 flags a week
@Tinkeringbell my guess is almost nobody there cares about meta. Less then 300 users ever even loaded meta there in the past 365 days
That is including over a full week of moderator election in the sidebar

7:40 AM
@Magisch Yeah well if you've got a graduated site with a clear scope and everyone agreeing on that scope, and moderators that don't do stupid things, I can imagine there's a lot less interesting stuff on meta and a lot less activity

a good question (relating to robert's recent post) is what SE does with that dynamic then
They're looking at 1 maybe 2 candidates (even with intensive cajoling) and from what it looks like at most 40-50 voters.

I'd love to see more answers on robert's post from non-mods. I'm kinda curious to see what 'normal' users think.

there are like 10 people active on MSE who aren't mods

@SonictheInclusiveWerehog there are two crucial differences though. In my case a) the message was a joke and b) the staff asked for suggestion in the first place (so they aren't entitled to be mad if now the community wants a plush :P)

@Magisch It's not that bad, is it? :/

7:44 AM
and 5 of those might just be on vacation with family because of fall break

Soo.. how do we get more non-mod users interested in using MSE?

@Magisch + meta
@Tinkeringbell well, everyone has their own reasons

On MSE, 26 users contributed more then 4 answers+questions combined in the past month
the vast majority of those are site mods

Meta for me is fundamentally a way to get influence over the direction of the network (hopefully for the better)
And I suspect a few su regulars followed me over :p
@Magisch :p
Alllllsoooo
Meta is fun?

judging from this the bitterness hasn't left meta discourse yet : meta.stackoverflow.com/questions/374788/…
it just looks like a bunch of vocal people quit

7:51 AM
@Magisch it's also worth remembering site mods are already hard core, engaged users

@JourneymanGeek Not always :P

@JourneymanGeek I was commenting on tinkeringbell's musing that she wants more non mods responding to robert's meta

I only started MSE after it came up in the TL a few times (with the exception of winterbash, that is)

fat chance of that

@Magisch :(

7:53 AM
@Magisch I can make that happen lol

@JourneymanGeek by posting it to RA?

Amongst other places lol

@Tinkeringbell honestly, I'm interested, but I'm bad at writing meta post :/

@Somewhat Hmm. So, writing skills classes? :P
@JourneymanGeek I dropped it in TAS ;) But on second thought, there's posts by Anne, Mari-Lou and user<number>, they aren't mods as far as I'm aware :)

goes to Writing...

7:59 AM
So maybe my complaints were a little unfounded ;)
So, discuss, and I'll catch up once this meeting is done :)
:P

They are very vocal SE non-mod users, even on ELU and its meta

@Magisch Query please?
@Magisch I guess I'm one of them?

@Magisch :( Get well soon!

10:52 AM
I'm very warmly predisposed today, so there's that

At least you won't get cold feet
Serious note: Take some paracetamol, it helps with fevers.

@Tinkeringbell Don't you mean, acetaminophen?

Don't you mean, did you mean?

@Somewhat Did you mean, don't you mean?

There's probably more than one over the counter drug that helps with fevers ;)

10:54 AM
Well, ibuprofen also helps

@SonictheInclusiveWerehog I was always told to be careful with ibuprofen as it can lead to stomach ulcers easily
apparently

@Tinkeringbell "Acetaminophen" is the American spelling of "paracetamol"
@Tinkeringbell That's too bad; my mom takes quite a bit of ibuprofen on a regular basis to deal with persistent pain in her hands

@SonictheInclusiveWerehog Schools here teach proper British English :P
To the extent that you'd get lesser grades if you used American spelling
@SonictheInclusiveWerehog I take them once in a while too. But the doctor would rather have I'd take higher dosages of paracetamol if the anti-inflammatory part of ibuprofen isn't needed.

@Tinkeringbell I often unintentionally end up "fixing" localization errors because my browser flags British spellings as incorrect

I personally feel like ibuprofen sometimes seems to work better though.

10:57 AM
iirc acetaminophen is the common name for the ingredient of what is marketed as paracetamol in europe

*localisation, sorry autocorrect
See what I mean?

I might have to go to the doc later this week, it's tonsilitis
usually that doesn't budge w/o antibiotics
But I even have to work on the national holiday tomorrow and have 0% option of calling out sick

Then go tomorrow instead of later this week ;)
Oh.

It would completly mess up the timetable for a incredibly important project

You beat me to it ;)

10:59 AM
@Tinkeringbell I thought the Dutch accent sounded very American

@Magisch Anyways, that might make for ibuprofen being the better choice then.

@Tinkeringbell She suffers from tendonitis, which means the anti-inflammatory part is needed
@Tinkeringbell Too bad for American grade-schoolers who move to the Netherlands

@SonictheInclusiveWerehog Oh, that may very well be, they don't really judge accents here. Things would go horribly wrong if they did (have you ever heard our prime-ministers speak? The king? )

both paracetamol and ibuprofen are bad for you if used regularly

I've been told from reliable sources my pronunciation is quite good.

11:03 AM
one shoots your liver the other your kidney
and one of them can get you nasty stomach ulcers

Oh sure... but if you only use them when sick, that's okay.

some people decide they're going to commit suicide by overdosing on paracetamol
which is really one of the most heartbreaking ways to die because usually these people have remorse when they wake up with what can be described as a bad hangover and then die painfully and slowly of kidney failure (I think)

Compared to insomnia, I'm more afraid of cannot sleep deep enough...
(the daily life of light sleeper...)

My nose runs whenever I breathe cold air, which means I can't go out in cold environments without taking cetirizine. Wearing a coat doesn't fix it, because my nose and mouth are fully exposed. In this warm climate when many places turn up air conditioning on high power, I often end up asking event organizers to keep the heat turned up a little so I'm able to stand it.

@SonictheInclusiveWerehog Scarfs are your best friend ;)

11:12 AM
@Tinkeringbell My nose is too big and juts out :) (To be truthful, it'd look a little awkward for a guy to cover his nose and mouth with a scarf where I'm from.)

@Magisch Yep, it's not a good way to go.
@SonictheInclusiveWerehog Get a nose-job first? :P
I think lots of people here wear scarfs over their mouth/nose in winter.
I know people that are asthmatic that do, because otherwise the cold air might trigger an attack

@Tinkeringbell It'd look awkward in places where it doesn't snow...

I wore a big ol scarf this morning and it was 8C
cause breathing in 8c air is unfun and painful with a tonsilitis

@Magisch I'm already in a winter coat, but I haven't broken out the scarfs yet. I do have a really nice one, crocheted it myself and lined it with flanel.
It's warm enough to make me sweaty, even when it was -10 this winter ;)

I also suffer from a dust allergy. I like that the new apartment I'm living in has a bare concrete ceiling, which means no dust and no daily dose of cetirizine (just the occasional dose in case it's cold out).

11:15 AM
I'm picturing a scarfed up parrot

@Tinkeringbell Out of curiosity, how many noise-cancelling headphone batteries do you go through on a monthly basis?

@SonictheInclusiveWerehog None :) Mine can be recharged via USB now :)

I go through around two AAAs a week to power my Bose QC25...
@Tinkeringbell I didn't want a rechargeable battery because those take time to charge (as opposed to simply replacing) and the rechargeable battery eventually needs to be replaced anyway once it loses capacity, and that can take a while to do with a lot of risk.

@SonictheInclusiveWerehog I had about the same rate for my previous headphones, but I always used rechargeable batteries.
@SonictheInclusiveWerehog I'm pretty confident it'll last quite a while, currently I can use my headphones for the bigger part of a week without charging.

11:22 AM
@Tinkeringbell My older ones, a cheap model made by Sony, lasted for much longer with the same AAA batteries, but they weren't that great at cancelling noise.
I once changed the battery in my cell phone. I literally had to perform surgery on it. Contrast that with just a few years ago...
@Tinkeringbell That's a nice idea. You could keep one charging while the other one's in use, so when one runs out you can just swap them out.

@SonictheInclusiveWerehog I had 4, as I had a charger that only handles pairs.
So 1 in the headphone, 1 fully charged in a carry-on, and 2 in the charger/charged at home.

@Tinkeringbell Yep, that's a good use of the spare battery pocket that's in my headphone case.
Anyway, have you ever built a computer from parts?

You're... quite jumpy in your choice of topics :P
What makes you go from scarfs to headphones to pc's from parts? :)

@Tinkeringbell I was getting bored, then my headphones ran out of battery power again, then I remembered you saying something about noise-cancelling headphones, then I remembered you also referred to them in your profile and I thought there's a chance you'd be working on a computer you built yourself

@SonictheInclusiveWerehog Heh. I did 'built' one. But I let my brothers do most of the parts shopping.

11:38 AM
@Tinkeringbell Same, except my dad did most of the shopping, though I was with him at the electronics superstore when we bought the parts.

@ShadowtheWelcomingWizard well, he means folks with POWER

I was quite amazed that it was working perfectly on my first try. I was wondering if I had applied that thermal paste on the CPU properly...

But that reminds me, I need a new case fan for the pc. I broke one recently ;)

@Tinkeringbell How'd you break it?

It still works, but it's rattling a little and annoying me now.

11:40 AM
I had to change the power supply in mine because it was making a strange whining noise under high load.

@Tinkeringbell happens...

@SonictheInclusiveWerehog Ehh. The case has a front you can take off, and then a small 'sieve?' to keep out dust. I took that sieve of, to dust it, while the pc was running

they do wear out ;)

When putting it back, I managed to hit the fan and break of one of it's blades

11:40 AM
@Tinkeringbell Did your finger come out unscathed?

Ok. its definately broken ;)

@SonictheInclusiveWerehog My fingers were nowhere near the fans, luckily ;)

I always unplug all cables and properly ground myself before I ever open my case.
@Tinkeringbell So another part came in contact with it?
I think you should get it replaced ASAP, because your components may not be adequately cooled.

@SonictheInclusiveWerehog Meh, I think they are perfectly fine. It's just one blade on 1 of the 5/6 fans.
And it's not like I'm using it for much more than browsing and the occasional netflix movie lately

Out of curiosity, is it easy to obtain computer parts where you're from?
I was once telling Zoe that if you're planning to build a new computer, it literally may be cheaper to fly to the U.S., buy the parts there, then fly back, because they cost a lot less here than in Europe

:)

As for the price, I don't know how it compares to the US, I had enough budget to not really mind.

Side note: pain killers cost x2 in Israel than in USA, as far as I know.

Yay, new silver badge! :D

11:53 AM
50 pills cost about 50 NIS which is about $14
@Tinkeringbell where?? :D

@Tinkeringbell I prefer to shop in a physical store, plus the local chain of electronics superstores (Fry's Electronics) has a generous Internet price-matching policy.

@ShadowtheWelcomingWizard That's... a lot! I think you can get 50 paracetamols here for like less than 2 euros
@ShadowtheWelcomingWizard MSE of course. Otherwise I would've shouted elsewhere :P
I have another answer with a score of 25 ;)

@Tinkeringbell good for you... :)

Here, you can save quite a bit of money on medicines by getting generic brands instead of name brands.

@ShadowtheWelcomingWizard Sorry. Didn't mean to rub it in.

11:55 AM
I think I paid around $15 (US) for a pack of 100 cetirizine pills.
...as opposed to the same price for 30 name-brand Zyrtec

@Tinkeringbell hehe, all good... used to high prices...
hehe...
> You may not be able to get the exact med--even the exact generic, but you will be able to get something that does the same thing. Make sure you copy down what you are looking for. ie. tylenol is acetaminophen and motrin is ibuprofen. Acetaminophen in Israel is called Acamol ( spelling may be off)

> Be aware of two things

> a. these meds are much more expensive in Israel than in the US

> b. Israel is only starting to have these OTC meds on display. You usually have to go to the pharmacy and ask for them, same as we do here for prescription meds. ( there is always a pharmacist who speaks

That does sound like I'd bring my own paracetamol if I ever come to visit! :D

@Tinkeringbell indeed! And car... cars also cost a LOT here...

12:18 PM
@ShadowtheWelcomingWizard I've no clue what a car would cost here. I think you can spend anywhere from 800 euros to a small apartment ;)

@Tinkeringbell in 800 Euro (4000 NIS) you can buy only really old cars here, I think 1990 or so.
New cars STARTS with 60000

@ShadowtheWelcomingWizard I think that's the really old cars here too ;) The ones that are almost rusted to the point where they won't pass a checkup

@Tinkeringbell exactly!

60000 NIS?
That's... what in euro's? :P

14k?

12:22 PM
That sounds quite low for a new car. I think new ones are easily 20k here?

almost nobody I know drives a new car

@Magisch Everybody I know drives one.
Even the ones that probably shouldn't :P

12:43 PM
@Tinkeringbell only mini cars, 1000cc engine.
Family cars starts at 100k

@ShadowtheWelcomingWizard Ugh. That all sounds expensive. I'm glad I can get a company car whenever I'm ready to start driving ;)

So although the way it was offered leaves something to be desired, I do appreciate the ride ;)
It's just weird, we've exchanged a few e-mails and one skype meeting already because we have to work together to some extent, but I'm not part of his team yet. That's why I'm going to that office location tomorrow, to have a talk about possibly becoming part of that team (at least for a while)

Of course, everything now collides into one sprint. I got 6 stories instead of my usual 3 (Yay, we upped my velocity!).

The fog's so dense you can just barely see the University of Texas Tower there

BUT now there's probably an awful lot of managing and meetings too.
