7:22 PM
@Oded so you like fish? And gefilte-fish? ;)

Not really... I like most sea fruit, but not most fish

I don't know what "sea fruit" are, but if it's a fanciful name for mollusks I approve.

@Shog9 anything that grows/lives in sea, but not fish

ah.
So, mollusks. Good.

Yup. And lobsters. And more... :)
It's this minus fish:

7:28 PM
I take issue with calling crustaceans "fruit".

Seafood is any form of sea life regarded as food by humans. Seafood prominently includes fish and shellfish. Shellfish include various species of molluscs, crustaceans, and echinoderms. Historically, sea mammals such as whales and dolphins have been consumed as food, though that happens to a lesser extent in modern times. Edible sea plants, such as some seaweeds and microalgae, are widely eaten as seafood around the world, especially in Asia (see the category of sea vegetables). In North America, although not generally in the United Kingdom, the term "seafood" is extended to fresh water organisms...

If I go to buy land-fruit and end up with a pile of insects, I would not be happy

@Shog9 yeah guess that's a bug on "our" side in Israel. lol
The Hebrew term is פירות ים which translates to "sea fruit".

Didn't occur to me how Israeli that phrase is.

7:30 PM
If I asked for sea fruit and ended up with sea cucumber, I would not be happy.

I would expect lychee or breadfruit or something along those lines

@TravisJ would you be happy with a land cucumber?

@Oded yeah, outside Israel it's all known as just "seafood". :)

7:32 PM
@Shog9 - I would be confused, but still fine with it. Sea cucumber is a beast all its own.

I was likely translating in my head without thinking about what it would mean to others.

@Oded I forgive you :D

Gee, thanks.

np, ad

@Oded I would like the veggie version of that dish, bok choy is awesome

7:33 PM
You veggie? @Trav

Nope, just #neverseacucumber

oh lol

@TravisJ I mean, so is land cucumber. At least, if I say I'm serving fruit salad & it's full of cucumbers... I'd guess most folks would not be appreciative of my terminology.

@Oded it is also common in Dutch: zeevruchten

Even though fresh tomato and cucumber salad is a fine fruit salad

7:35 PM
@Shog9 my boss can't eat cucumbers. He asks for salad without them. But he like pickles.

@rene TIL :)

It is probably one of the worst things I have ever tried, although I haven't tried gefilte-fish

@ShadowWizard pickled cucumbers?

@ShadowWizard I know people like that with tomatoes - can't eat them fresh, but fine with them any other way.

@TravisJ you even know what is gefilte-fish?

7:35 PM

if you're implying that it looks gross, so does almost everything from the sea

@Shog9 yup

@ShadowWizard - It is like a butter consistency fish paste that tastes like vinegar and fish oil were left in a barrel.

yum yum

One might reasonably interpret "sea-*" as a euphemism for "monstrous-disgusting-*"

7:37 PM
Eel is kind of similar, although I guess I can understand getting used to it.

@TravisJ how you know if you never tried it?

That's why it's so important to serve it with pasta or rice. Lends a sense of wholesomeness to what would otherwise be a very troubling plate.
Smoked eel is wonderful
but again, you kinda don't want to think about what it looks like fresh

@ShadowWizard - I like watching food and cooking shows. I have seen the reaction of people eating it, and it looked like something I would rather abstain from.
I was just making sure we were talking about the same thing @Shog9, not about how it looked. You are right though, many things that look odd are quite tasty.
The "Bizarre Foods" host, who will eat literally anything, said that gefilte fish is the worst tasting thing he has tried.

@TravisJ - it is essentially a fish dumpling.

You mean similar to preparing the dough aspect of it?

7:41 PM
@Shog9 my mother used to bring fresh eel. So fresh, that it escaped its bag and went on adventure in the kitchen....

hah

@TravisJ heh, I can record myself eating it and enjoying every second. ;)

@TravisJ don't know about prep - but close to fluffy meatballs in consistency.

Same for regel krusha...... I love it! /cc @Oded ;)

It is definitely in the "acquired taste" category

7:42 PM
@rene I had a friend who acquired an octopus which did this

So many cultural delicacies are, @TravisJ

Poor thing. Almost made it to the door before dying, while he was passed out drunk.

lol

@rene my father used to put fish in the bath, until he killed them day or two later.

7:44 PM
Think about pigs trotters, cheeks, crackling...

I know it only from stories, I was a baby when he last did it.

mmm... cracklings....

@ShadowWizard you were happy because no bath? Or did you had to go in with the fish?

@rene lol.... good question! No idea, will ask my mother when I see her in Saturday. ;)

Bathe with the fishes

7:46 PM
My first memory is only from the age of 4 or 5, something in the kindergarden.

@ShadowWizard cool! Say hi to your mom from me.

@rene I will!

Aside from bathing with fishes, as far as swimming goes I get kind of uneasy when there are large fish in the area.

I hear parts of Florida coast don't have large fish.
The crocs got them all.

hah
I don't know how some people are so calm with large fish, a friend of mine dives near whales and whatnot. I saw a 6 foot wrasse once and that was pretty much it for me being in the water in that area.

7:52 PM
Under water everything looks 20% bigger

"Don't worry about the whales, they are actually 20% smaller than they look"

"Don't worry about the small Titans, they'll have to tear you in half before swallowing you"

"Don't worry about the wizards, their fireball is not as big as they want you to believe"

Does flagging a "+1 for" comment as too chatty make it self-destruct?

@Shokhet don't think so

8:02 PM
@Shokhet try it.

@Shog9 I think I just did on skeptics.stackexchange.com/a/38655/23404. Someone left a(nother) "+1 for the xkcd" comment. It was only a minute old when I flagged it, and then it wasn't there anymore...

then now you know

I guess so.
The other option was a ninja moderator who has very good timing.

So comment like "Hey, you know that 1+1=2?" will also be insta-nuked with single flag?

try it

8:10 PM
@Shog9 can't flag my own comments :(

Hey, you know that 1+1=2 — Shokhet 8 secs ago

@rene hey can you please flag this comment? Want to see if it's insta-nuked... :)

@ShadowWizard Not insta-nuked. Maybe it's specific for "+1 for"?

@Shokhet hmm.... probably, or just "+1" in the begining

Maybe.

9:07 PM
@ShadowWizard it is gone?

9:18 PM
@rene yeah I self deleted

OK

9:34 PM
KO
