Anyone around?
I wanna discuss a feature request. @Sha you there?

@M.A.R. Me, maybe not relevant

@πάνταῥεῖ Well, I wanted to know if an FR is worth asking on meta.SE. Sha is usually the guy to go with this stuff

@M.A.R. @ShadowWizard Is wise, but not the only relevant person, is he?

Here goes:
I wanted to ask for temporary voting info of users who've earned suffrage recently to be temporarily available to mods

user315433
What is "temporary voting"?

6:19 PM
^ Exactly what came to my mind 1st

WTH is this

user315433
If you mean for mods to see the posts that a badge-winner voted on, then don't bother asking... not going to fly.

@NormalHuman I was thinking it should be included in the suspicious voting stuff, if the surge of the votes was quick

user315433
Eh. I'd say this is an unusual amount of votes (vs virtually no other activity) but even that was deemed ok by mods. Not targeted, so whatever.

6:35 PM
@NormalHuman There are high-rep users on Chem who've earned some rep over a period of time, which is obviously to game electorate or suffrage
The serial voting script won't catch this, since it's over a period of time.
The mod's suspicious voting tool doesn't catch them, because they're spread through two or three users, than one user.

user315433
6:50 PM
Hm. If someone targets 2-3 users, then it's not about electorate or suffrage, is it?

user315433

7:10 PM
@M.A.R. "Surge of votes being quick" isn't really a good metric for suspicious activity on an election, though.
I'm retard
I don't know why I was thinking of elections. SU election on the mind maybe.

Because deep inside you, you want elections

They are really fun...

user315433
Speaking of elections, Biology election begins in less than an hour.

user315433
After seeing this, I really did not feel like voting for that candidate (despite them being a model mod candidates otherwise). But... I guess everyone is entitled to a stupid idea now and then.

7:27 PM
@NormalHuman Where does each candidate stand?
WTH. Three candidates

7:44 PM
@Normal I mean the reviews downvotes thing

@bwDraco I am not trying to circumvent a designed-in limitation of the software. Accusing someone of violating some legal dispositions should not be done that lightly. There exists laws protecting from defamation, in such unfounded accusations are definitely defamation. — Franck Dernoncourt 8 mins ago
Can we have a CM look into this?

Why? Because Frank doesn't agree with your POV?

Anonymous
IANALOACM but I don't think anybody's going to get sued for defamation.

@M.A.R. hehe, you found a rare occurrence I wasn't around. What is the feature?
@NormalHuman so why you never play WAG in Den? :(

I've deleted the comment in question but this needs to be escalated.

@Fawad the text that appears when you hover with the mouse over something.
@JasonC wasn't it your lack of sleep, i.e. you did cast that vote? /cc @Fawad
@πάνταῥεῖ @rene is also Meta guru, yeah. And @Bart.

8:31 PM
@bwDraco why? I don't see anything wrong.
What was your comment?

The comments have been deleted.

@bwDraco I read Franck's comment before it was removed.

This is the text of the comment in question:
I'm deleting it in a bit so it doesn't stay live.

@M.A.R. depends. If you mean mods will see full voting info i.e. who voted, then I think it's not a good idea. If someone suspects a user, flag, and the mods can escalate this to the team who can see the full info.

then I don't really see anything wrong. Franck may have slightly overreacted to your comment but that's not entirely surprising. Nothing worth escalating IMO.

@bwDraco He's thanked you for removing you comment, so I don't think he meant it as a direct threat.
@bwDraco thanks — Franck Dernoncourt 2 mins ago
Appears to be resolved.

Calling that a direct threat is quite a stretch, IMO.
@bwDraco good

Hey what did I miss here? :(

Was accused of defamation. The comments in question were since removed, and the problem appears to have fixed itself.

Only Jeff got answers with lower score. (5 such answers)

@ShadowWizard No only the phantom vote part was lack of sleep. Everything else (the disconnected profile, the original question before I went through the whole phantom vote thing) still stands.

8:49 PM
@JasonC oh. Well, let's cross our fingers for @Adam then. :-)

@rene And yet, a few remaining kernels, still unpopped, were found in the center of the devastated, butter-and-radiation-drenched landscape, because screw you popcorn.

@JasonC yup we get those all the time, how irritating
I mean, it's like 10% of the popcorn, wasted.

100% of popcorn is a waste.

nah, popcorn is awesome

Awesome at sucking

8:51 PM
Though I didn't have one at home for ages

It is even better when consumed while watching meta-drama

Puffcorn, on the other hand, please, get inside me.

Googling
huh
Think I know this in different name. lol

What's your main language

Trader Joe's has teh best puffed corn imo

@ShadowWizard I'm the best we've got? We're doomed.

@TravisJ Hell yeah

@Jason is this puffcorn?
(/cc @Oded you like שלווה? ^ ;))

Yeeeeees

@JasonC hehe, here it got a name of its own. שלווה, or Shalva - no idea why.
But yeah it's tasty.
@JasonC me? Hebrew. And C#.

8:56 PM
wiki says shalva is a light heavyweight wrestler.

@ShadowWizard It says shalva is puffed wheat.
This be corn.

@JasonC meh, same thing. :D

Silence.

That's more like Honey Smacks -- en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Honey_Smacks

@AdamLear lol, I trust your bug hunting skills to catch and squash that bug soon enough. :D
@JasonC oh. oops. Still, tasty!

Time for midnight coffee and FF15 if baby will let me. Cya!

bye

Anybody know of the fastest fouriest transform library?

9:07 PM
no, but man, how great would it be if there was one named 2 Fast 2 Fourier?
2

@bjb568 I've had stellar results with FFTW.
There's also a CUDA-based one that runs on the GPU, uh...

That's fourier, but I need fourlest.

There's a newish algorithm for sparse ffts from mit, too groups.csail.mit.edu/netmit/sFFT

@ShadowWizard puffed wheat, not corn, and yeee gads, it's been years since I've seen that.

@bjb568 Would you settle for fast and fourier if it was the transformiest?

9:12 PM
Perhaps.
One can always use a good transforming.

@ShadowWizard Meta guru. Not sure if that's a compliment or an insult. :p
@JasonC called Smaxey not because of the cereal, but because he was an addict.

yo where can i get some smax

9:40 PM
instructor types nuttcp command
"I'm starting a nut see pee server"

user315433
@bjb568 Use a fast furious transform library instead.

user315433
Seriously, I think it's brute search over bases.

user315433
So, a comment ending with 5 dots is 1-flag nuked if total length <=20.

But more dots allow for greater length: I also got 9 dots out of 23, and 14 out of 29.

What's the name of the effect where changing something increases some indicator, but changing it back increases it again?

The Hawthorne effect (also referred to as the observer effect) is a type of reactivity in which individuals modify an aspect of their behavior in response to their awareness of being observed. The original research at the Hawthorne Works in Cicero, Illinois, on lighting changes and work structure changes such as working hours and break times were originally interpreted by Elton Mayo and others to mean that paying attention to overall worker needs would improve productivity. Later interpretations such as that done by Landsberger suggested that the novelty of being research subjects and the increased...
Or:
The novelty effect, in the context of human performance, is the tendency for performance to initially improve when new technology is instituted, not because of any actual improvement in learning or achievement, but in response to increased interest in the new technology. The Metropolitan Education and Research Consortium of the Virginia Commonwealth University states, "While it is possible that higher attention spans can be attributed to novelty effect, even after the initial novelty wears off, the level of interest in the automated workbook is still greater than that in the regular workbook. The...

Hawthorne effect is more about being self-conscious of the experiment
Like your behavior changes because you know you're being monitored

More optimistically: someone cares enough to change things, so I'll care too.

@bjb568 Do you have any context? Are you talking behaviorally? Or are these, like, numerical data and observations?

Beavhioral data. Like number of clicks or something.

11:36 PM
Did your users know you were doing a study?

it was a problem with A/B testing.
No, I just remember Shog said something about it like three years ago.
I guess it's like the Novelty effect, but more specific and named after someone.

Do you know anything about the reasons? E.g. novelty effect on initial change, then relief when its reverted if the change was unpopular?

Novelty effect both times. Change causes good results regardless of type of change.

Or a new awareness of / appreciation for the feature after its reverted (which I guess is sort of like a retroactive novelty effect)

might have been that.
