Q: What does this number theory statement mean?

KKZiomekI recently started studying number theory by myself and I am reading a book about number theory. There is one thing that I don't understand, the statement below: If $a,b \in \mathbb{Z}$, then there is a $d \in \mathbb{Z}$ such that $(a,b)=(d)$. I understand everything but the $(a,b)=(d)$. I...

Distance creates beauty - take maths for example, the beauty of maths lays within abstraction. But abstract things are useless unless it can take some concrete form. As an engineer, I design and build many things. Nothing is perfect. Details can be ugly. But ugly things can work and sometimes they work very well.

user202362
In the end, the fact you hard coded a few variables and the paint is 0.5mm thicker in one area is irrelevant as long as the system works well and it's in presentable condition on the outside.

routing 9 months service, also re-gas the air cond & checked for any leaks

user202362
so, nothing wrong with the car other than air cond not cold enough

@Telkitty oh, nice... here it's every 12 months or 10,000 km whatever comes first. How much does it cost at your place? Here the check only (no repairs) is about $200.
So no leaks, @Telkitty? (in your car ;))

I have a diesel car, service costs $375 alone

@Telkitty oh, that's a lot... for some reason thought our rates are high. :/

user202362
the car is under warrantee, thus services cost so much

Cars are like printers, the initial cost might be rather low, but the actual cost is maintenance and fuel.
@Telkitty oh, car is still new?

once it's out of the warrantee, I will find a cheaper mechanic

Twice a day isn't really hygiene freak, think it's quite common. ;)

how's baby @Shadow doing? :)

10:54 AM
It is changing underwear multiple times per day ...

11:10 AM
@rene lol! Right on spot... guess diaper can be considered "disposable underwear" of some sort. :D
@Stijn apart of what @rene said, she's also eating (well, technically drinking) and sleeping. Of course only during day, so that her parents will stay awake at nights. :/

hehe :)

You plan to have kids one day? @Stijn (know the answer for @rene already ;))

I think so, but not 100% sure
I still have some time to think about it :)

@Stijn well, in the meantime try to practice with brother/sister/friends babies, see if you're up to it.... ;)

@ShadowWizard well, it is all going to be alright then. You can't start drinking to early. I'm still doing that.

@rene oh, if you'll drink what she's having, you'll be drunk before you know it. Strong stuff. :D

@Stijn That would be my dream job ...

@Stijn well, at 13 you're still almost a kid yourself, so hard to judge. Better try again as adult and see if you still can go through this. :)

@ShadowWizard :D

@ShadowWizard Yeah well some of my friends are thinking of having a kid within the next 2 years, so maybe I'll have to babysit some time :)

11:20 AM
@Stijn what's the catch? Salary N/A too?
@Stijn hehe, that would be a step forward, yeah. :)

@ShadowWizard you have to give them your tarif. The description says they want a technical analyst who is stress-proof, is good at writing documentation, can do code maintenance on their own and is available for after-hours emergencies.
Sounds like a job I don't want at all :p

@Stijn or in short, a robot.
What's "tarif"? It got meaning in Hebrew, but doubt that's the same word you meant...
initiating Google

@ShadowWizard "daily rate" is maybe a better translation
you have to tell them how much money you want per day

A tariff is a tax on imports or exports (an international trade tariff). In other languages and very occasionally in English, tariff or its equivalent may also be used to describe any list of prices (e.g., electrical tariff). == Etymology == The small Spanish town of Tarifa is sometimes credited with being the origin of the word "tariff," since it was the first port in history to charge merchants for the use of its docks The name "Tarifa" itself is derived from the name of the Berber warrior, Tarif ibn Malik. However, other sources assume that the origin of tariff is the Italian word tari...

If you wanna be a commando, now is a terrible time to join Stack Overflow (the company or the site, really). Arguably, we're at a point where we have more infantry than we really need or know what to do with, although that could change in an instant. But one thing's for sure: we need a lot of "police".

user202362
humans are very good at punishing the symptoms rather than rectifying the cause

Hence the creation of a Marketing department, a Data Science team and Developer Insights group/product. Hence the focus on breaking up an increasingly large and increasingly unfocused dev team into smaller, project-focused groups, the search for a PM whose roll more than anything else could be described as logistics - figuring out how to coordinate people and time in a way that can efficiently get hum-drum stuff done without requiring everyone in the company to drop what they're doing.
We're at the point where - at least in theory - we have more than enough resources, enough talent, and enough opportunity to use them... But doing so requires diligent execution on a whole bunch of trivial stuff by a whole bunch of people; it requires communication and planning and a willingness to listen, to recognize the limitations of what can be done in a timely manner and make good use of what time is available.
It requires being able to think more than a month ahead of time, and also still being around in a month and not forgetting what you planned a month ago.

11:15 PM
@Shog9 have them build a Windows Phone app.. :p

huh... That still exists.

I'm as surprised as you are
front page is mostly Community bumping old stuff

yeah, that's a pretty good sign that not a lot of folks are struggling to use their new WinPhones :-/

that's cause the OS is flawless

But anyway, @Jason... If you squint real hard at the screenshot here, you'll quickly realize that our days aren't filled with bloody landings on the proverbial beaches; there are countless little improvements, little maintenance tasks, tweaks to try & fix frustrating behavior, scale better, or adjust to changes...
...If that doesn't exactly thrill you, then trying to join up would not be a good call.

@Shog9 It sounds weirdly thrilling when you describe it.

In any case I have zero negative thoughts about SE maturing as a company in general. It's just my brain needs time to adjust to reality not matching my imagined view of it. But that's just me.
Joel's retarded post on the other hand, that one will haunt me.

If it makes you feel better, most chocolate factories don't have open-flowing rivers or oompa-loompas either, so...

What may not be obvious to you guys is how much of a pedestal I put SE on, for lots of philosophical reasons that have significant value to me. So that's why I reel a little, maybe seemingly disproportionately, when things don't quite match my expectations there.

note to self: not cynical enough to hire after all
