Distance creates beauty - take maths for example, the beauty of maths lays within abstraction. But abstract things are useless unless it can take some concrete form. Hence the creation of a Marketing department, a Data Science team and Developer Insights group/product. Hence the focus on breaking up an increasingly large and increasingly unfocused dev team into smaller, project-focused groups, the search for a PM whose roll more than anything else could be described as logistics - figuring out how to coordinate people and time in a way that can efficiently get hum-drum stuff done without requiring everyone in the company to drop what they're doing.

We're at the point where - at least in theory - we have more than enough resources, enough talent, and enough opportunity to use them... If you squint real hard at the screenshot here, you'll quickly realize that our days aren't filled with bloody landings on the proverbial beaches; there are countless little improvements, little maintenance tasks, tweaks to try & fix frustrating behavior, scale better, or adjust to changes...

...If that doesn't exactly thrill you, then trying to join up would not be a good call.

What may not be obvious to you guys is how much of a pedestal I put SE on, for lots of philosophical reasons that have significant value to me. So that's why I reel a little, maybe seemingly disproportionately, when things don't quite match my expectations there.
