I wonder how many smart devices will be bought over this xmas period that will end up in a garbage dump somewhere in 2 years time

I miss the days when people had computers they could log into. Now all the computers are gone, replaced by servers.

@tchrist I still do ._.

user202362
servers are not computers @_@

I feel like this must have something to do with the tipping epidemic.

user315433
And airport food, probably.

Some sommelier refused to pour new wine in old computer boxes, so he went out and got new servers instead. Wasted grapes.
I think computers went the way of files, which are also no more. Now we have only documents.
Even our erstwhile directories have been fowdlerized to make way for the brave new document servers.
It's hard to do good Orwell better.

user315433

Next step, cryptocurrencies instead of real money, stored in a serverless cloud.

Given that cloud is marketeer for “somebody else’s computers”, and since we’ve already determined that servers are computerless, the cloud must therefore be serverless.

@alexolut that was autocucumbered from crotch and was funnier.

@JourneymanGeek like hat on the crotch!

once I was living by myself in this 3 bedroom house with a backyard, I heard someone walking on my roof, so I came out with a golf club in one hand and a knife in another

4:43 AM

@JourneymanGeek why some hat is good on crotch and another doesn’t?

user202362
next day, I found a teddy bear in my mail box

This is Tavern... Keep calm and relax~ :p

@alexolut If it looks too much like a strapon, or a male body part, its probably not a good idea. You probably know this. I'm sure if a hat looked like a pair of boobs in the right orientation, and you did it, you'd get the same response.
And it comes down to "use your common sense, otherwise we cannot have nice things"

(I failed to be funny...)

Manneken Pis ( [ˌmɑnəkə(m) ˈpɪs] , meaning "Little man Pee" in Dutch) is a landmark small bronze sculpture (61 cm) in Brussels, depicting a naked little boy urinating into a fountain's basin. It was designed by Hiëronymus Duquesnoy the Elder and put in place in 1618 or 1619. The current statue dates from 1965. Manneken Pis is the best-known symbol of the people of Brussels. It also embodies their sense of humour (called zwanze in the Brussels' dialect) and their independence of mind. == Etymology == To be precise, the real name of the statue is Menneke Pis. In fact, in Flemish or Dutch, but also...
Is this fountain offensive for you guys?

user202362

@alexolut I saw it in real life when I was in Brussels years ago

Venus (, Classical Latin: ) is the Roman goddess whose functions encompassed love, beauty, desire, sex, fertility, prosperity and victory. In Roman mythology, she was the mother of the Roman people through her son, Aeneas, who survived the fall of Troy and fled to Italy. Julius Caesar claimed her as his ancestor. Venus was central to many religious festivals, and was revered in Roman religion under numerous cult titles. The Romans adapted the myths and iconography of her Greek counterpart Aphrodite for Roman art and Latin literature. In the later classical tradition of the West, Venus becomes one...

user202362
is this offensive?

@Telkitty was there a desire to tear off something from him?

user202362
are you drunk

5:37 AM
@JourneymanGeek use of any hat placed anywere can be funny, but not offensive. If some hat looks like strapon such hat should be removed from hat list for entire SE, I think.
@Telkitty but someone tear off my hat...

Odd, I read both answers and they do appear to roughly say the exact same thing... it's broken, you should file a bug report, you could fix it yourself but don't bother... But then, I don't use craptastic operating systems, so I might be wrong... — Won't 19 hours ago

@Derpy yes, but Won't so ...

I can't AGF
But I should know I won't be able to AGF his...

oh, well, it is pretty obvious the question is dwelling on the "rant" side of the Force, but I still wonder if you need to add fuel to the fire. Sarcastic reply and ending with free attack to an operating system?

OS wars always exists...
And well, I think OP deserves that comment after ranting that badly.
It's still not "ur face is ubuntu" level

10:49 AM
@AndrewT. Even if I don't agree I will accept that. For the part about the sarcastic answer. But the OS attack... are you assuming that only the guilty user will read that? I expect users from both the Unix and the Ask.Ubuntu communities to come to the question, so the comment will "make them mad" too

to be honest, it's Won't.

@Derpy enough comments from him are removed. He is a former mod on SO. And no, he is not above the rules, so flag away if it bothers you in anyway. I commented a few times on his humour if I felt he missed a beat, often causing the comment to be deleted by him.

you are free to flag, but I'd say "meh" because I know his behavior.

It's the same as those who says "SE Android app is craptastic". Even though it's not entirely wrong, but I always twitch when I read it.

11:01 AM
@rene that is not about humor tastes, I am only wondering if that comment on that specific post isn't going to increase the already existing tension.

It might, or might not. If it feels wrong in context, do flag.
@Derpy well, Evan has seen more heat. He can handle it. I think it works in that context for that OP.

@rene Seems that everybody there gets downvoted.

1:08 PM
yeah, that is true. I get that for the other crap that was posted, not for what is curently visible

@rene Probably to do with this:
using inline query is not a good practice — lazydeveloper 43 mins ago
Some people downvote every answer to a question they think is bad (as punishment). and lots of people ride the downvote train (downvoting something already downvoted further without reading it)

Myeah, I'd guess so.

how about the only -1 answer?
why the rest got 2 dvs...

@Magisch I don't even know what that means. Does the query need to go into a resource file?

anyway, the question also has 1dv, probably from the same answers-downvoter
put the SQL as StoredProc?

@rene probably this:
using inline query is not a good practice — lazydeveloper 49 mins ago

@AndrewT. the SP in an option but it adds unneeded complexitiy in this case.

@rene it means a user heard something somewhere once and now uses that as a mantra to regurgitate whenever they can, even if not immediately a problem.

Q: Readability checklist for posting questions

R.MI have noticed that a few of the less popular sites (like Blender and 3D printing) often contain questions that are very hard to read, mostly because of grammatical errors. I understand that not everyone can write in perfect English, but I feel that a checklist of simple errors they can eliminate...

user315433
7:05 PM
@JakeSymons On topic, yes. Useful, no. Best way is to ignore it, thus minimizing the time wasted.

user315433
"How to English correctly" is not a subject that can be usefully expressed as a bunch of CW answers. Besides, people write the way they are used to writing; unless they are on Writers they are not looking for language advice.

user315433
Android Enthusiasts questions are thumb-typed txt speak in some regional dialects of English and a meta post isn't going to change that.

@Catija yep, otherwise all of us with an account on every site would find that page impossible :D

@CrazyIvan is it worth a flag, or just leave it?

@CrazyIvan Or ELL...
Or ELU....

7:22 PM
Should I flag it or is it best left, or edited and improved?

@ShadowWizard I'm around! At times. Kinda. There was teh fire

user315433
@Catija Right, those would be the ones, much more than Writers.

Currently at 272,000 acres, still burning although mostly contained, at one point was burning an acre per minute.

You safe, I hope?

Yeah, just really smokey for a while, had to wear a N95 mask indoors even. Definitely got a little too close for comfort.
It's been going for 3 weeks. =/

7:29 PM
Yeah, it's been a bad year for fires in Cali.

Yup, we got no rain since, jeez, 250 days so far? Everything is so dry it doesn't take much to get a big fire going.

Wow, that's awful.

The post above should I flag it as mod intervention or as off-topic
Readability checklist one

Just leave it alone.

@ShadowWizard is there anything I can do to help you and R.M on post writing advice. I wanted to flag it but I've had a change of heart :)

8:23 PM
@TravisJ whoa... you OK? Were you evacuated?
Still... not an excuse to be away! :P
@JakeSymons no, and surely we should never custom flag just to close, and surely not on MSE.
Such flag will surely be declined, it's waste of the staff time.
@JakeSymons oh. Glad to hear.... I'm afraid nothing we can do, just maybe add more things to the answer, in case the question will survive.
note to self: read whole chat transcript before starting to reply. ;)

8:38 PM
lol... forgot that with active bounty I get notification for every new answer.... o_O

8:54 PM
@ShadowWizard I was on the voluntary evac line, so we didn't leave but we did go through and at least prepare to pack. A few coworkers of mine had their entire property except their actual houses burn.

9:25 PM
@ShadowWizard Ugh... Well, I guess the point of the bounty is that you want better answers? Maybe a FR "if I choose "reward existing answer" for my bounty, don't alert me to new answers."

9:42 PM
@TravisJ ouch... glad you're OK! But how come your fire fighters couldn't extinguish the flames? When there was a major fire in Israel, USA sent us tons of help including some huge fire fighting airplane with like 10 tons of water capacity...

@ShadowWizard Scale? There are 2-3 going at once in California, I think?

@ShadowWizard The first night the flames were insane. They were burning an acre per second, and the wind was the major reason why the fire fighters couldn't do much about it. There was hurricane force gusts, at over 80 mph, so they couldn't fly the airplane nor the helicopter while that was going, leaving only fighting it on foot as the option. Also, a lot of the fire burned in the mountains with really big inclines and rocky areas making it nearly impossible to fight on foot.
Structurally, not many houses burnt for how large the fire size was, but mostly the wind was the reason why it got to be so crazy.

@Catija but US got lots of those super tankers....
@TravisJ oh. That's nasty. I fought a fire once, while in the army, it wasn't a pleasant experience.

I saw some footage of a fire fighter on foot standing on the freeway while a 50 foot tall firenado was burning ahead of him. The wind kind of just had its way with the fire.
It isn't near the cities as much anymore though, just in the back country. I think they should have the rest of it out soon so long as the weather doesn't get too crazy. The fire basically burnt all there was to burn along the mountain ridge here.

@TravisJ you could take a picture and send to some newspaper, or even pictures contest... :)
Were there any casualties in the fires?

9:53 PM
There were two fatalities sadly, although relatively small compared to how much burned. One woman was trapped in the fire lines when driving, and a fire fighter died (unsure how). Someone started a gofundme for the firefighter's wife and has raised half a million dollars for them (she is pregnant) so that was at least some sort of help for her for such a loss.

Sorry to hear...
Well, we had a real disaster 7-ish years ago... en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mount_Carmel_forest_fire_(2010)
It caused major change though, since then the government spend much more on fire fighting.

I think I remember reading about that at the time. Fires are just unreal sometimes.
