@Quill Huh. I guess there is a backstory to the comments I'm getting then. Something about "rope".

Yeah, JNat should know more about it if you're curious

@JonEricson I don't believe there's any backstory to them. You say "share your assistance and advice with them as they learn the ropes," and since he'd been a pro-tem between me being hired and them having had their first elections, they're just playing with the fact that they don't need help learning the ropes 'cause they've helped shape the site's policies in the past and won by a landslide, I believe
@Quill Only saw a single user saying they were quitting chat; did I miss something?

[ SmokeDetector | MS ] Mostly non-Latin answer: What does the proportion 1:3 mean in the following example? by عبیدالله دانش on ell.stackexchange.com (@ShadowWizard)

7:15 AM
@JNat I thought senshin threatened some stuff during the last election, at least that's what some of the guys in chat said.... you can find some of that conversation here: chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/message/31893697#31893697
@SmokeDetector k

I hope the whole "we are doomed" and the "threat the ones that do not agree with him on the ID-Request topic" isn't based on this.
in Maid Café (メイド喫茶) on The Stack Exchange Network Chat, Aug 21 '15 at 4:39, by senshin
@Killua Well, geez. I thought that not having find-my-pornography questions was what was best for the community, but clearly the community believes the opposite - that having find-my-pornography questions around is actually best.

@Quill There weren't any threats, from what I can tell. Similarly to the current election, some users found the tone senshin used when referring to id-reqs in the last nomination (see comments) was not the best.

Ah, I see

@Derpy Also, this chat message happened during said election, which aggravated things a bit, yeah.
My general impression was that some users found that he shouldn't be so markedly stating his opposition to id-reqs
I agree that his tone could have used a slight polish, but see nothing blatantly objectionable

@JNat My point is that I would expect Stack Exchange itself to step in and ban those question (that for a period were most of the question I would see on the site while I was thinking if I should join it... now you know why I didn't), so I can't say I am very aggravated by the fact a mod isn't fine with tolerating them. That said, the message should have been expressed in a more polite way.
And probably someone should have called for a community manager to step in far far ago (in a far away galaxy)

7:28 AM
@Derpy Step in to ban id-requests? That should be a decision made by the community, and not by staff.

@JNat Not any ID-request. I guess senshin was talking about the "uncouth" ones, which were allowed for a while, took the majority of the post on the site and then were banned alongside all ID-Request if I understood correctly?

@Derpy By my recollection NSFW id-reqs never took over the site. Since there were several attempts to accommodate for general id-reqs, we, at a certain point, also tried to allow for id-reqs about more... let's say niche anime to be asked about, provided they stayed away from more graphic details and tried using "technical" language. It became apparent very quickly that that wasn't gonna work, though.
Actually, let me make that clear: clearly explicit stuff was never allowed. The problem was always with borderline content, 'cause, you know... the whole "drawing the line" thing

@JNat Then I will assume I was just unlucky and I visited the site in a bad timespan. Not that I am really that convinced to be honest, but well... I will trust you since you would probably know more.

7:44 AM
@Derpy This comment, for instance, came right after he closed a question asking where an image, hidden in spoiler tags and showing a girl taking her lingerie off but not quite showing anything, was from. The debate ensued 'cause some said the image was pretty tame and hidden in spoiler tags, and others (senshin included) saying that's pretty NSFW and "identify-my-porn" stuff should go elsewhere.
@Derpy There was a brief period of time in which people would actually go there to ask what hentai a pic or video was from, yeah. Those were summarily closed, deleted, and the explicit content edited out of the post.
Regardless, id-reqs are now dead and buried, so that's nothing to worry about any more.

@JNat Well, it --may-- be my perception (ask @ShadowWizard, I am know to be pretty strict) but I also had the felling the "image bot" they run in the chat used to post more questionable images back in the day, and I think that caused problems too.

@Derpy It is not your perception only. The bot has been more closely monitored 'cause even a few regulars complained a while back. Furthermore, it has the ability to unbox/hide or delete (undo) an image posted recently if it shouldn't be there.
The thing is that it used to post images uploaded, basically, by a single user. So that user uploaded stuff according to their taste. Nowadays more people contribute with uploads, so, in addition to the tools for moderating I mentioned above, the content is much more diversified.

Well, I didn't want to stir-up an argument here, nor to bring any dramma or make you lose time for nothing. All what I meant is that I am not really surprised a mod there could trigger some "fight" by delving into such matters.

@Derpy yup, I confirm. And "pretty strict" is huge understatement. :)

(and that if I was in your place, the "holy mace of smiting" would have fell there with much more thunders and fire..)

I know no one really goes on Patents.SE, but can anyone take a look at this and see if they can repro? Area 51 link on Main 404's Thanks.

@JAL of course. The "Site stats" box is standard for all beta sites.
For some reason, Ask Patents is in a status of beta site, see its privileges as well, so it got the box.

JAL
@ShadowWizard thanks for the comment. Can the link be removed since there is no proposal (like you said). Or can the box not be modified like that

@JAL probably the code currently does not support removing it per-site, that's why they still didn't remove it.

JAL
makes sense

Might be wrong though, @Shog9 can the "Site stats" box be removed from Ask Patents since it's, well, not really a beta site?

@Magisch I tried it in the past. Never got much done. There's something about the process of going to work, doing the work, and then switching off when going home.

In a nutshell: the few false positives as in your case are nothing compared to the thousands of "plz solve my problem" titles we would be getting if it will be allowed. — Shadow Wizard 5 hours ago
@ShadowWizard Right: we prefer to get thousands of "plz solve my pr0b1em" instead. :P

That issue still annoys me. Mostly because in the evaluation people working around the problem (haha) were counted as part of the positive results.

user202362
For me, the worst kind of working from home is that you have to work in the office for 8 hours during the day and still have take work to home to finish it. The best working from home experience is when I work for my own business, getting up late, exercise in the late afternoon and code until 1am-2am (that's just my natural rhythm) :p

My natural rhythm is getting up at 5.00-5.30 am and going to bed at 11.30-12.00pm and no later

user202362
The worst was once I was posted in London office for 3 months, the last 2 weeks, I was given 8 hours of work in the London office and 8 hours of work from the Sydney office.

2:07 PM
@ShadowWizard it can be, yes.

I dont work more then 8 hrs a day when coding, period. If there is more, it'll wait
Hey Shog

Nobody can code well for more than 8 hours a day anyway. Especially over long periods of time.
Or at least I have yet to see someone who can

If I code while physically exhausted I generate more work then I solve

I do that even when in good shape. :)

I don't fancy working to create more work.

user202362

Gotta have time to fuel my insatiable SO addiction :p

user202362
Personally I get more work satisfaction when I know the things that people use are entirely or mainly built by me :p

I like the type of work where I get to solve a given problem entirely
Like the buy this scanner write this driver build this database backend and then make it all work together and deploy it to production thing.

user202362
I used to be obsessed by having to learn new things everyday. Then it changed into that I have to build something everyday. Now I becomes that I want to create something that people use everyday :p

user202362
But what I think is useful, what people use the most and what brings in the most money are three different things.

2:27 PM
@Derpy meib u!
@Shog9 oh, good to know. So will you remove it on Ask Patents? Or is there a reason to have it there, with the broken link and everything?

Hi @AdamLear, do you think renaming the Necromancer badge to something more neutral, is something that can be considered? See this. I don't feel like posting on Meta as it has potential for being a downvote magnet.

3:29 PM
@Stijn I guess Paladins and Necromancers don't mix?

@tchrist I suppose so :)

@Telkitty oh. Here no fixed rate, each taking as much as he wants. And many take way too much, e.g. there was a plumber who charged $2000 for fixing a simple leak.

@Stijn Uh. I mean, it's possible, but "one person didn't like it" is not exactly compelling reason to do it.
I agree that a meta post would likely not fare well, but I don't know how else we'd even start to gauge the popularity or presence/absence of community support for the change.

@AdamLear if a meta post would be a downvote magnet ... don't we have our conclusion already?

I think it can be asked well. But I'm not sure we're going to change without a pretty good reason.

3:47 PM
@Bart I feel like lots of people could downvote it for the sake of it, without actually caring about what the badge name is. It could be renamed without mentioning it (in het geniep). Anyway, I'm personally not at all bothered by it, just throwing it out there :)

Gorsh!

@JonEricson I suppose as long as you don't get daily requests from people to remove that badge from their profile, there's no good reason to change it.

@Stijn I really don't get all the (recent) meta fear. Just write a decent well-motivated request and see if it sticks. If not, oh well.

@Stijn I think the two things I'd look for are: 1) solid reasons to remove the objectionable name and 2) an alternative name that's better. Frequency of requests is far less important.
