Wait, people like San Francisco?

The gays do
I've heard
Morning

@JamesENL Haight-Ashbury != Castro :)

I'm going off international stereotypes here. The most I know about San Francisco is from a mix of Eddie Izzard's Dress to Kill and Mrs Doubtfire

Perhaps no one can tell the difference between flower children and drag shows any longer.
The Summer of Love was a social phenomenon that occurred during the summer of 1967, when as many as 100,000 people, mostly young people sporting hippie fashions of dress and behavior, converged in San Francisco's neighborhood Haight-Ashbury. Although hippies also gathered in many other places in the U.S., Canada and Europe, San Francisco was at that time the most publicized location for hippie fashions. Hippies, sometimes called flower children, were an eclectic group. Many were suspicious of the government, rejected consumerist values, and generally opposed the Vietnam War. A few were interested...
That's all tied up with the sexual revolution, the civil rights movement, the LSD craze, and a lot more.

Magnolia Thunderpussy (30 October 1939 – 15 May 1996), born Patricia Donna Mallon was a San Francisco burlesque performer, radio personality, filmmaker and restaurateur. Thunderpussy operated two San Francisco restaurants in the 1960s: the one at 1398 Haight Street (at the corner of Haight and Masonic), which bore her name, featured a late-night delivery service and erotic desserts such as "The Montana Banana", which was an unsplit banana, representing a phallus, served "erect" in a food service "boat" with two scoops of ice cream, representing the other components of male genitalia, with shredded...

1:13 AM
Mark Twain famously observed that there were only four unique cities in America: Boston, New Orleans, San Francisco, and San Antonio.

user202362
I like San Francisco, it's a lot like Sydney, but on the other side of the globe ...

user202362
also, awfully expensive real estate ... just like Sydney

I wonder whether what Twain wrote remains true today.

user202362
and New York City, I am amazed by the amount of tall buildings there ...

user202362
1:19 AM
Very unique, impressive to look at, but kind of reminds me of ant hills

Not, I think, that you would care to live there.

user202362
Las Vegas is cool too, and relatively cheap. As someone who don't like crowd and gambling, Vegas was actually fun (for short 1-2 days stay)

ew
Let's not talk about Reno.

user202362
I have only been to 4 of those 10 cities

Probably best not to talk about Nevada at all.

user202362
1:22 AM
So I am not entitled to talk ...

user202362
Only if you could average Silicon & Death valley

user202362
both in CA

user202362
Hahaha >_<

Well.
Death Valley is in both.
I don't suppose you've been there?

@tchrist Oakland is interesting iff you take interest in the universally hostile form of poverty and ruins found there. SF is just Oakland but less trashy. If you're in the area, y'ought to just go to Los Altos or Palo Alto or Mountain View or Cupertino and experience the niceties there.

1:28 AM
@bjb568 I'm quite familiar with all those places. And you seem to have forgotten Berkeley. Shame!

@tchrist Yeah, sure, that too.

user202362
@tchrist I have

That part of Silicon Valley is nice enough. Stay north of San José and you'll be alright. :)
@Telkitty A remarkable place. The world is young, there.

@tchrist There is some suckyness around there like in public schools and transportation, but it's pretty nice.

Silicon Valley because it's really sandy?

1:29 AM
@JamesENL Pooters.

user202362
Death Valley is a bit ... dead

@JamesENL We have dirt, thankyouverymuch.

@bjb568 It's infuckingsanely overpopulated.

Yeah. But that increases the synergistic city effects.

The ones where mammals kill each other from overcrowding, yep yep.

1:32 AM
@tchrist Of course if you're allergic to population density, California also has Death Valley and Joshua Tree.

Nice places.
The previous one was eleven years ago.

Wow, I'm missing out in Ohio.

Well of course.

:(
I'll come back for you, South Bay, just you wait!

WHYYYY-OHHH-WHYYY-OH-WHYYYYO Why did I ever leave Ohio!

1:36 AM
Because you don't have that in Iowa, that's why.

user202362
@tchrist super-bloom ...

Pretty

That, either.

user202362
when I was there, it was exactly like that, minus the flowers ...

user202362
even the middle of Australia got more vegetation than Death Valley

1:39 AM
Then there’s the skiing. Kinda.
@Telkitty Death Valley has more vegetation than the Black Rock Desert.

I'm rolling into Fort Wayne now.
Weddings suck.

@bjb568 Then go to a few funerals this month. See if you don't miss weddings.

@bjb568 Weddings suck when you're below the minimum drinking age

Eh, yeah, that's probably it.
@tchrist Funerals tend to be shorter.

I doubt anybody would say anything providing you're 16.

1:46 AM
plus or minus

user202362
Also I wouldn't mind living on Long Island, I like big houses on large block.

user202362
American land tax, lol

I don't know. I never much enjoyed alcohol in high school.

user202362
I am not sure it's legal to drink in your high school days

Well, provided enough alcohol, I wouldn't remember how bad it was.
@Telkitty It's not.

user202362
1:53 AM
Also I am going to mountain in China in 3 weeks time - when you look down, there are heads, when you look up, there are butts

@Telkitty That depends. It can be.
I rather doubt that much matters, anyway.
It was legal for me in high school.
I don't think that changed my opinion of it.

1 hour later…
3:02 AM
I've certainly changed my opinion of alcohol since high school. I only drank once before I turned 18, which was a sip of a vodka mudslide. I only drink drinks that I like the taste of which generally means cocktails. My tolerance for a strong alcohol taste has increased dramatically
When I was in high school I was a total swot and didn't like underage drinking. Now I'll drink socially with friends.

@JamesENL As I recall, I got drunk once at 15 and once at 19, and then not again for several years.
Boring, I know.
Well, drunk like sick-drunk.

I've never thrown up from drinking
The closest I came was eating pizza, after a few drinks and singing Let It Go. I inhaled to belt out the end of the song, and inhaled a chunk of pizza, which triggered a coughing fit and eventual little spew to clear my windpipe. I maintain it wasn't the alcohol which caused the emesis.

user202362
3:47 AM
@tchrist how crazy do you think the idea is if I told you that I was considering traveling from San Fran to NY on grey hound early-mid next year

too

user202362
why

I'd go crazy

user202362
lol

user202362
3:51 AM
they claim to have electricity and wifi on the coach

user202362
not planning to stay on board the whole trip - will hop on and off 2 times in between

Weather may not be pleasant.

user202362
you can't plan weather unfortunately

You can if you don't try northern routes before late spring.

user202362
3:54 AM
I am thinking March to June closer to March than June

But you're starting in San Francisco, so you have no choice but to go over Truckee Pass on I-80.

user202362
I have been to San Fran & NY, but I want to be where I haven't this time round

user202362
got to go

these old duplicate templates that were inserted don't resolve themselves when removed: meta.stackexchange.com/posts/23670/revisions
Is that by design?
Or by bug?

Both, kinda sorta.
I think
As in, nothing is actively cleaning them up any more

Q: "Possible duplicate" notice not removed after reopening question

slhckI just reopened this question, which had been closed as a duplicate of another. I navigated away and went to visit the page later, it turns out, the Possible Duplicate banner wasn't removed automatically. How come?

related I guess?

1:09 PM
@Bart yeah. I somehow expected that it detects when it re-renders the html if there is old-style dupe-note so it can add the modern one. But I guess it needs re-open/re-close to trigger that. Not worth the effort

1:21 PM
I'm pretty sure Glorfindel gets an upvote due to the layout of his post. Edited my answer accordingly to steal back the vote ... whoahahahaha

I've said it before and I'll say it again. Walking into Stack Overflow is rather like walking into a locals-only bar. — Matthew Taylor 1 hour ago
This does seem to be true. :/ There really is an 'in' culture and people not 'in' are treated very harshly.

I thought I explained why the dupe wasn't correct here but that comment was too blunt or even abusive so it got flagged and removed? I don't recall that I used any inappropriate wording ... :(
@hichris123 that is true but also because the not in don't seem to be bothered much about why we like that bas so much.

@rene But then people don't even try to be inclusive...

...and then there are words in a sentence that I don't even understand, so I just give up on whole conversation and buy a ticket to pluto

Change the s to an r, think it was a typo. :)

2:33 PM
oh....thanks. Now it makes sense. Let me cancel my pluto plans. Thanks @hichris123 :)

Pluto would be cool though...

literally....
@hichris123 I think there are also enough examples where people start yelling because they assume they did nothing wrong. I do know that might be caused by unlimited access to various resources that give thumbs up to every cat gif but still, what else can I do then tell those users they have run into the wrong place?

on a second thought, if I get to travel with plutonium powered computer and a high speed internet antenna to pluto.....who knows....

@DroidDev afaik interstellar broadband is not lifting off yet....

@rene hmmm.....then I'll need lots of external HDDs and periodic transmission back to my company on earth

2:40 PM
I mean, it takes days to send a couple of holiday snaps from Jupiter ...

Horrible service. Just wait until Google Fiber gets there.

/me ironically stars previous picture ...

@Bart or maybe Reliance Jio....

@rene I mean, politely informing the user they're in the wrong place seems to work. e.g. with meta.stackoverflow.com/questions/333892/…

2:46 PM
@hichris123 are you suggesting I'm not politely in scaring users away?

@hichris123 I think everyone starts with politely explaining the problem. But, when those users(the ones who are politely explaining) see same thing again and again in just the course of hours (or maybe minutes) they get irritated and next new-comer gets hammered

That is why I like my auto-comments. It never irritates to leave them under a misguided post.

@DroidDev Yeah... and that's also why I think people who want more votes/close votes are crazy. Not only are they going to burn themselves out, but they'll just end up more and more jaded and rude.

@hichris123 yea....one reason I never demanded that is, I think there are enough people with those powers, that we don't need more of votes.
anyway....time to leave for home....sayonara everyone(everybot) :)

Maybe we should do a -100 rep if you don't use all your votes ...
Or send electric shocks through their keyboard for those that upvote
See! I'm not negative at all!
I can continue for hours with these kind of ideas

2:57 PM
@rene apart from obvious issues with that, I'd love to see some users rage-quiting voting system and rather increasing their answering frequency so they keep the rep
@rene I imagine USA adopting that as an alternative of electric chair for hackers

@DroidDev they can have it. They have to pay me though

@rene oh....did you already patent it?

checking on Ask Patents right now ...

....also, I am sensing that your neighbors need some freedom. Calls Justice department of USA

I have that number for you

user202362
3:07 PM
does any one else look at 'Ask Patents' and thinking about 'Ask Parents'?

user202362
I can't be the only one

I thought "Ask parents" went obsolete when children rights were introduced and spanking them was made illegal :/

@Telkitty yes

user202362
Oh phew, what a relieve ...

I propose to merge parenting.se and patents.se

3:11 PM
('._.)

@Telkitty are you sure?

3:30 PM
Ah, meta drama...
@rene You should check your room...

3:47 PM
That also probably deserves a trash.

done, and thanks again for noticing
that wasn't the first time and probably won't be the last.

Ah, meta drama...

@hichris123 :D

So honestly @hichris123 some users try to help out someone and now I'm made out for I don't know what ... how nice do you really want me to be?

Hmm?

3:54 PM
Very nice, you unbelievable %)*/&"*%)/!!

nvm let's delete vote it ...

Can't delete vote on MSO ... I should get more active on the main site :D

I guess the word passionate just got a different meaning for me.

@rene If you're talking about "how nice should I be to someone who's being rude"... I'm not sure. Probably still nice? You take the high road, more rudeness is sure to just spiral down and down.

I actually find it great fun to be very polite to rude users. I have in the past even edited rude questions on Meta into overly polite ones ...

4:02 PM
@hichris123 are you saying in no single context I can be rude? What this for &^%$# site!

I never knew flowers wanted to be so rude...

@Bart Yeah, that is probably making things worse .. :D

He's just going through flower puberty @hichris123.

I wonder if users that are rude are sensitive for emotions expressed by others
I mean: I want to explain to someone: hey, that is rude where I come from.
Because I still believe that conversation is better then suppression

@JNat cross site spammer for you if you got a minute stackexchange.com/users/8862272/nicky-reich?tab=accounts

How come it wasn't caught by Smokey, @hichris?

@rene I think users who are rude, mostly are intentionally so, and often because they feel they have been mistreated.

@Bart is the overly polite approach the only way to reach into the state-of-mind of those users before they felt they were mistreated?

@ShadowWizard Because the link text wasn't "essays" or "writing service"... fixing that now.

@rene I'd say there's generally no reversal for those users. I can't think of a situation where someone who was really upset at the time said "you know what, you're right"

Maybe there should be a cool off first state for a post.

I doubt that's going to go over well. :)

Yeah, don't ask me for the correct wording of that ...

"Stop being a twat, before you post that" ?

@ShadowWizard gone

4:34 PM
@Bart that would work for the Dutch ...
Hmm, pressing F12 in a Windows Forms application doesn't bring you to the Developer console ...

@hichris123 oh, thanks!
@JNat awesome, thanks!
I see it got no accounts, but will the network profile stay forever?

@ShadowWizard refreshed it, and it's gone

@JNat oh, caching... thanks!

I just dropped my online DE class. It's astounding how much they could screw up the entire learning and grading process. The Zill DE textbook is required and it really sucks.

A: Meta to new user: your question is a turd that cannot be polished (or: we need to Be Nice here too)

Nelson TeixeiraPeople... I really didn't want to cause all that. I'm the user that made the question that started this. @Halfer, you have asked how we can be nice here. Well the first thing in "being nice" is: how can we "be nice" to someone that isn't "being nice" at us. Because if we can "be nice" to him, th...

> Think by the mind of the attacker. How did he get to have so many bad feeling that he reads things as attacks all the time ? I may be wrong, but my view is that he was treated harsly so many times, that he said to himself: enough is enough. Or maybe he was exposed to concepts of individuality and self power, the reasons can be many.

But still: "being nice" must start with who's not "being nice". This way we can help every one in the hard task of uniting and have a better understanding of other.

Is there some way I can change ELU's site theme, mainly the fonts and color scheme, on my browser? Like, a custom theme for ELU when using my browser.

@hichris123 yeah, say that one ...
@NVZ use stylish or any of the apps: stackapps.com/search?q=theme
@hichris123 have I been nice enough here or do I run the risk of being flagged again?

7:07 PM
@rene I don't see any problem with that comment.

OK, thx

@rene that looks fine. You were flagged earlier?

@hichris123 I think so yes. I'm a bit uneasy because I didn't think I crossed a line then but others have decided differently so I rather gather some feedback to get a better feel if I'm rude without knowing
