@bjb568 sometime when playing No Man's Sky, if you are very unlucky, you can start your travel on an acid rain planet (or get one in the first few). This means that you get to experience either a "try to always stay inside your indestructible ship" experience or have to constantly refill your suit shielding power.
The fact that we don't have either building that could withstand such weather conditions for long or Varia-Suit style power armor should suggest that colonizing Mars isn't really about the flying cost :P

Has NMS seen any updates at all to convince me to buy it?

I should check if the new patch is out. Have been pretty busy.
But nope, I don't think it will magically turn into Halo.

8:05 AM
> Here’s what we’ve been busy with in the weeks since release:
• A community/support management team has been brought on board.
... somewhat too late Sean.

It was a "Space trekking simulator" an will stay "Space trekking simulator"

In all fairness, it could have been a "very nice indie title" if they didn't hype it so much and weren't leaving vague hints at features that were never going to be in the game

@Bart Like the portals? I think the are still trying to make them work somehow and probably will enable them in a patch. Multiplayer was just buzzwords from the start and personally I never believed it would be possible in the first place.

> personally I never believed it would be possible
Same here
But that clearly wasn't the case for most people

@Bart They were hinting a "peer-to-peer" multiplayer system, and that is plain impossible to do with a destructible world.
I asked this question on The Bridge months before the game even released.

8:10 AM
The persistence would have been the troublesome part there. Not so much the P2P itself. But yeah, if they really wanted multiplayer it would have had to be on dedicated servers, which they really weren't showing any infrastructure for
And heck, their netcode never showed any signs of real multiplayer
I'll pick it up once it's in some sort of discounted bundle or whatever

If you don't have a central server, what will happen if I dig a hole on a planet near a save station, stand in the hole, save and log out. Then, while a player was standing here I "re-log". If my changes are only saved locally, will the other player see the hole "pop-into-existence" when I log? Will I see him float in the air because he is on ground in his game?
that didn't never make any sense at all.
Actually, I think it may get even simpler.
They said they would only save changes locally.
Now tell me how multiplayer could work if any player could have a different version of the world.

@Derpy exactly. You could have some sort of constant "persistence ping" where you send world updates to a server. But that would be wide open for abuse as well. So in practice that was never gonna happen
@Derpy it can't
Hence they only have an API for such "changes" as renaming a planet or whatever. But that's about as multiplayer as it gets
Basically they have a DB

The only way they have to enable multiplayer now is by using the still unused portals to get to a dedicated area for multiplayer. Or something like that. The main game isn't simply structured for that to work.

Yeah, and there's nothing bad about that. It's all fair enough. They just screwed themselves over with their own vague stories.

My "luck" was that I never expected that to be an actual feature in the first place (or cared), but I can see why people were pretty upset by the misleading claims.
Guess that I will wait and see how "Dreams" turn out instead.

8:23 AM
Don't have a playstation unfortunately, but that looked quite cool when I last saw it

@Bart It is from the same studio that created Little Big Planet, I hope they know what they are doing
The mayor problem they are going to have is content rating, but I also hope they realize they need to have a flagging system in place from the start
That game editor mode seems to be far more than "you have set pieces that you can combine"
they basically included a "poor man's Blender"

Wait, are we talking about the same game?
Ah yes, we are. Didn't know they were including that
Cool

If they find a system to remove inappropriate content from the game quickly, the editor can become a really cool feature.
They hinted that when you create a "dream" you can place links to other dreams. They can either be a link to another dream that you created or a "jump to random" one.
The "online multiplayer" experience seems to be centered on the fact that these "random jump" will bring you to other people creations without a real path. Just going around, seeing places and exploring.
I already know many creations will be lame dead-ends with very little artistic value... but I hope there will be also the pearls.

8:43 AM

Here's what I learned on meta this week:
in The Whiteboard on The Stack Exchange Network Chat, 1 min ago, by Aaron Hall
Don't make the perfect the enemy of the necessary evil.
By the way, I just coined that, you can attribute me going forward.

9:02 PM
tl;dr: don't make a perfect enemy necessary.

My phrasing is more elegant and clear. :P

user335633
@Shog9 so true, having a nemesis is fine

Do we need enemies?

You should always make the right enemies.

user335633
A proper enemy is often entertaining

9:10 PM
do you need to grow them yourself or can you buy them at Wal-Mart?

You go to France and ask for un ami.

user335633

9:39 PM
Just got my Apple watch.
It's so good.

Ok, What time is it now?

user335633
it is 7:40am here

But that is not Apple time
The Kitteh is now cursing at his stoopid watch because it doesn't show him his local time, but that of Mars or so ....
Probably needs an iPhone to control the thing

user335633
what is the local time on Mars?

Ask @bjb568

9:43 PM
Time doesn't exist on Mars because it's a gravity well and Einstein said something.
Really tho, there are no time zones there.

At least they did that better then
