Is there a name for the idea of a mutual agreement between members of society to be part of it by helping others in exchange for being helped? I used to think this was a social contract, but apparently that has a much more specific meaning.

3:37 AM
Communism?

Like anything beside anarchism.
If I'm walking past a guy in the park who's seriously hurt, I help and dial 911. Not just because of laws and morals, but because of an investment in society.
It also kind of expands to respecting public workers and such. It's also about tolerating progressive taxes if you're wealthy because, again, we have a society here.

I would think a social contract somewhat applies here... you give up some things to the government in order to preserve the welfare of your nation

But it's not a government thing, it's a social thing.
I can have the same kind of mutual agreement within close friends.

Maybe ask on ELU chat?

But who's collecting taxes? Who's making sure that person you find stays alive?
@bjb568 that's technically a government though...

3:43 AM
Eh, fine, if you want to be technical. But it isn't what the enlightenment thinkers who are referenced by the dictionary had in mind really with it.
@hichris123 If I were out in the deep dark forest, me. And wealth redistribution would be in the form of hospitality.

@bjb568 But you're giving up some rights (your right to ignore others) in exchange for mutual help. I think that was Rousseau's view (or someone similar).

you're describing communism, but there's probably a better term for a socially implied agreement

@hichris123 Hmph, I guess social contract does make sense then.
I dump if it's widely used to mean that tho. But good enough.
Night!

user315433
In math, this is an easy problem to solve. Have a term that describes something similar, but not the same thing? Fine, your thing will be "generalized social contract", or "social contract of 2nd kind".

@bjb568 Laws?

Votes to undelete can get a question back. It so far received one. But looking at the question and answer, I don't think anything of amazing value has been lost.

Bart: The time I lost answering. A system like SE that repays time with attribution dies if people stop answering because they do not get attribution.

Yup, it's annoying if they delete their questions like that. No doubt about that. But I don't see anything worth rescuing there now it's gone.

What bugs me more than the feature itself is this linking of error messages to a placeholder in someone's GH (not even visibly related to Chromium repo or anything). I never heard of Jason Chase until now.

A bit clearer background (aka. explainer): github.com/jpchase/OriginTrials/blob/gh-pages/explainer.md

goddamn it. the vending machine gave me a normal coke instead of coke vanilla ;-;

@hichris123 Hm, the stub at GH repo doesn't point there. github.com/chromium/chromium

user315433
Well, I guess it does after a few clicks.

user315433
But when I see "the source code is here", I click and is lead to that googlesource.com site

11:02 PM
so if I have a answer deleted by a CM and I go and fix it, do I have to ping that CM to undelete it, or will my edit ping them?

@sandwich Well, googlesource is where the git repositories are hosted. But cs.chromium.org is for quick code searching (basically a fork of Google Code Search).
@Quill The edit won't ping the CM.

I guess Robert Cartaino's active here, so I can always ping him here once I fix it I guess. A little unorthodox, but hey, whatever man
