There's an amusing contrast between
(a) students wondering "why do we need these math-y things, when it's all implemented in software already", and
(b) SO users being helpless when a numeric solver from their favorite library fails to converge on a system of two quadratic equations.
user315433
I sometimes want to show group (b) to group (a), but don't know how to do this without mocking them too much.

Someone on SO wants to model the throwing of three dice by a 3-dimensional Numpy array. I start writing...

Kitteh Q of the day: can integration operator be substituted by one or more variables in a equation?
02:17
Not really.
user202362
that kind of shows that maybe with current level of maths, people are not able of abstract higher dimensions
user202362
with height, width and depth, one can use + - x / in an equation to abstract the concept of anything in relation to those dimensions
user202362
but usually with time dimension, one uses integration (or differentiation)

blue tongues are cute little bastards, you can pick them up and feel them wriggling in your hand
so, I was looking at an "hacked" Microsoft account for a friend of mine.
history shows successful sign in from Usa, and considering he live in europe that is a little strange.
but nothing makes sense.
Password for the account was a >16 character long random string containing letters, number and special characters.
time of the access was about 5 minutes after the account was created. No chance for bruteforce, password would have to be stolen via some rootkit, keylogger or similar stuff.
Can't find anything bad on the system, which -to add to the injury- is a os X machine, which should reduce the number of possible infections. The machine was also pretty new (not that this really matters)
Best part: the IP the account activity page shows seems to be from Microsoft itself. Again, not that this really proves anything since ip spoofing is pretty easy, but you would at least hope Microsoft detects a client that is spoofing their own IPs.
been searching for a while about similar cases. Found some, but none provided real info.
If anyone has any idea that may be worth checking, I am open to suggestions.
The account was closed since the attack occurred, but I am more worried about the timing.

a successful sign in 5 minutes after an account was created looks very fishy. It seems to indicate that the attacker had the password.

All I have is eggs, gruyere, some multigrain bread, some decent butter. I have some zucchini but I don't see where that fits in. And so I'm going to head out to the grocery store / butcher / fish market. But I have no ideas.
Oh I have milk and buttermilk already, too.

Always a good choice
If you had flour, you could batter-fry the zucchini and serve it with toast and poached eggs
but you don't
So I'd go with scrambled eggs topped with grated gruyere and hot buttered toast.
Put a bit of buttermilk in the eggs before scrambling for extra fluffy and tangy results.

Thanks, @MikeWilliamson - I greatly appreciate the praise. However, since I was elected moderator recently, I've been having to delete lots of thank-you comments (even and especially my own). I've learned that your best bet at having comments guide future voters is to make direct criticisms of the posts you don't like - the hope is that the poster will improve their post and flag your comment for obsolescence (thus for deletion) - but posters tend not to improve their content. I'll probably delete these comments soon, after I'm sure you've read my response. Thanks again, and cheers! — Aaron Hall ♦ 27 mins ago

... print('{0}k: unpin accepts older than {1} year'.format(i, index))
eh? yeah? Whaddaya think?
What does that mean? Unaccept answers?
Note that's not, "unaccept" - I propose the accept checkmark stays.
user315433
An irreversible decision by one user, looks structurally wrong.
22:06
You mean unpin from the top?
The asker could reaccept to pin again and restart the clock.
user315433
When the asker is gone (often the case after 7 years), it's irreversible.
who cares, the asker is gone, thus they don't care anymore.
user315433
Let's just expire pins automatically. Checkmarks pins for 2 years. Like a smartphone contract.
I'm ok with that too.
But we do like giving out privileges with rep...
22:09
For some reason I thought that happened anyways when you sorted by votes but I guess not.
user315433
Better than someone being angry at a specific person for defenestrating dethroning their answer.
Given that I always sort by votes - I could've told you.
I sorted your mom by votes
@zaq Who cares - they were first for a long time, and another answer still got more votes.
user315433
The author of unpinned answer will care, that's for sure.
22:11
To me, the answer is thus demonstrably inferior.
Anyways re: "whaddaya think", my two cents is: Non-issue to me. Don't care.
user315433
> This person just went through my answers unaccepting them...
But it's possible that I'm part of a dying breed of people who know how to use a scroll bar.
Given two answers of approximate (e)quality, if one is accepted and thus ranked first, it will get more upvotes.
user315433
The problem is not scrollbar, it's having to read and evaluate answers. IMPOSSIBLE. People need one correct answer, and be told what it is.
22:13
Thus being pinned by the accept is an unfair advantage - if it has less votes than others, it is thus demonstrated to be inferior.
If it is of approximate quality to the others, it will likely have far more upvotes, thus keeping its position by rank.
But if they're of approximate equality, who cares if one gets more votes because it's pinned? They're of approximate equality. A reader is helped. Unpinning does not help readers more or less.
It only helps the poster, to which I say, get a life. If all your rep rides on one answer that you wish was at the top, just contribute more, it will even out. Either that, or move on.
Unpinning will only affect poor answers.
And it will help casual users (i.e. users who don't have all day to read and evaluate the quality of every answer).
I mean, if an accepted answer is just wrong, that's not a problem either. Because it doesn't work. So somebody who uses it must continue their search. They will either scroll down, Google, or give up. Either way, at the end of the day what's supposed to happen does.
Not that unpinning would hurt anything, though.
I think it's just a no-op.
It's always fun to have more privileges though. There's that.
I like my idea to unpin as a privilege because I've had my (much newer) answers accepted, but it takes them a very long time to catch up in votes for parity.
user315433
> just remember to read google results from top down and stack overflow from bottom up... -- Dino Dini at 12:08 PM - 10 Dec 2016
22:19
How about this - the privilege would be the ability to pin and unpin the accepted?
user315433
Pinning by someone other than the OP is in the category of mandatory comments with downvotes.
>>> for index, i in enumerate(range(100, 30, -10), start=1):
... print('{0}k: unpin and repin accepts older than {1} year(s)'.format(i, index))
100k: unpin and repin accepts older than 1 year(s)
90k: unpin and repin accepts older than 2 year(s)
80k: unpin and repin accepts older than 3 year(s)
70k: unpin and repin accepts older than 4 year(s)
60k: unpin and repin accepts older than 5 year(s)
50k: unpin and repin accepts older than 6 year(s)
40k: unpin and repin accepts older than 7 year(s)
user315433
Always will be proposed, always will be rejected.
Yeah I'm with zaq on that one.
Ones that should be pinned will be pinned longer - ones that shouldn't, won't
22:21
Also the other thing is
@zaq accepts
No matter who can unpin/pin, OP or others, if you allow that I think you just make the site confusing for no reason.
Anything that gives control of "pinning" to someone other than the asker is essentially asking for pinning to be removed from the system entirely, because that would be the eventual outcome.
Because you'll end up with a random spattering of questions whose answer sort order is different than the rest, no accept on top.
So then you have to explain that to people, the inevitable "bug: accepted answer is not shown on top of X question" flood on meta, etc.
> random spattering of questions whose answer sort order is different than the rest, no accept on top.
This is the only downside I can think of so far...
22:23
The cleanest "solution" I've heard thus far was to simply expire the "accept" after n days, making it in effect a temporary vote.
user315433
We got one of those just today. Self-accepts don't pin. It's not a disaster for meta.
@JasonC we already have those.
user315433
15 mins ago, by zaq
Let's just expire pins automatically. Checkmarks pins for 2 years. Like a smartphone contract.
@Shog9 don't even need to expire the accept - just expire the pin.
user315433
I like the smartphone comparison. After 2 years everything is obsolete.
22:24
And it will be a random spattering. There probably won't be good guidelines, 100k+ (or whatever) users are of wildly varying reliability and consistency, it's just weird.
But I like my privilege idea more.
user315433
I'd want more than 90 days. In slow moving topics gathering the Internet's opinion on an answer takes long.
Make it a privilege! :)
Per-site time limit would make the most sense there.
22:26
That's why I prefer actually expiring the accept itself rather than the pin - could predicate that on voting instead of time, removing it only once it was no longer needed.
user315433
Expiring my 15 rep? NOOOO
@Shog9 I support that.
It would be an awesome April Fools prank to completely hide accepted answers for a day.
@JasonC Your bank would crash.
user315433
22:27
Yes, let's batch-delete all accepted answers. Problem solved.
Let's batch-delete all [php].
Or draw the checkmark next to the lowest voted answer.
But regardless, this ends up being a headache every time it gets discussed; everyone has some scenario they want to protect and by the time you've designed a system to handle all of them it's too complex to ever explain.
The world would fall apart.
@Shog9 There's no need to consider edge cases. Just remove accepts and use a hotness sort.
22:28
There would be this awesome 24 hour period where nobody knew how to write an Android app any more.
This is easy to explain:
>>> for index, i in enumerate(range(100, 30, -10), start=1):
... print('{0}k: unpin and repin accepts older than {1} year(s)'.format(i, index))
@bjb568 which works wonderfully for questions that should actually be Reddit discussions and is borderline worthless for everything else.
hotness sort that doesn't respect pins would be great.
@Shog9 I somehow don't think expiring accepts would go over that well.
Look, we need minimal changes to the system. Don't remove "accepts"
22:29
I'm sure it's already a meta thread or two anyways.
That's too big of a change
@JasonC nothing will
@Shog9 The strength in Reddit is its sort algo, the weakness is its lack of moderation and quality. SO can maintain quality and have a good sort algo, they aren't mutually exclusive.
Shutting down LH would go over pretty well.
2
@bjb568 I agree - and we can have it be an alternate tab.
22:30
@bjb568 I wasn't putting down Reddit there (I can do that though; always good fun). Just saying they're different things with different needs. A reddit discussion that gets two replies is a crushing failure; a SO question that gets two answers is already getting pretty busy.
In most cases, hot and top should be pretty similar anyway. Hell, you could just use top but give newer votes a temporary boost.
user315433
Now that we know that two-column format is the best way to present information (thanks Developer Story), there is no need to argue: both the accepted and the top-voted answers can be on top.
I feel like I've won some hotness sort converts. Yay!
@Shog9 Right, but the difference is really made in cases where the are more than two answers. Sorting answers differently won't just magically devolve SO into reddit.
I've never got a reply to any of my posts on Reddit, ever. Can confirm, it's crushing.
@bjb568 Transform, not devolve. They're completely different sites.
22:33
I say we have a name-sort - we sort by first name, alphabetically.
changes name to aardvark
I have an idea! Let's let users pick the sort order, we can let people vote on it to keep it fair. We'll let the OP pick the top spot as a bonus.
changes name to a1_aardvark_teh_kitteh

What is M2, anyway? A user with 2000+ rep?
@zaq That's against my personal rules.
user315433
I'm familiar with M8 but that's a different thing.
Here's the can-dos I'll allow, personally:
•Test your edited code to make sure it works
•Fix syntax errors and typos
•Improve formatting
•Correct spelling/grammar issues in the answer body
I'll usually approve suggested code edits if the comment also contains a proper explanation, and the edit is correct. If I can't tell I just skip it.
22:42
But I don't even do those.
user315433
@AaronHall Adding #include to make the example self-contained looks pretty harmless to me.
user315433
That's what that tweet complained about.
@zaq The real problem shown by that tweet isn't the code edit or its outcome. It's the fact that Mr. Fisher and friends are butthurt over a matter that is resolvable in seconds.
@AaronHall I'd allow any edit that doesn't change the meaning of the post and makes it better.
22:43
heh.
He still saw the suggested edit, even though it was rejected. So he still received information from another person about what needed to change, even if it wasn't delivered to him in his favorite form. So apply the change yourself and move on.
Except in the case where it is a highly voted slightly-wrong answer, where I'd also accept a correction even if it changes meaning.
I'll allow the user to make those kinds of edits, but I'll probably side with the user who rolls it back.
The guy's tweet is moronic and deserves no further discussion. I bet he posts on LifeHacks. What we need now is cat pictures.

Q: How can I gain more common sense?

Daniel CannI feel like every day of my life I'm told the following things: That's just common sense! It doesn't require much common sense to figure that out. Come on Daniel, this is common sense. I obviously don't have much common sense. I feel like I need to try and get some, but no matter ...

It's been surreal! Gotta run! Hotness sort! :D
Make unpinning a privilege! :D

Fun fact: LH is two years old and is still moderated by Robert Cartaino.

I thought of a baby breastfeeding comparison but it didn't quite work...
It's because they misnamed it - should be "doohickeyhacks"
22:55
@zaq It looks like I have just over 11 rep per day in my time here, lol.
I'm above the median at least, for users >= 10k.
I need to answer more dumb questions. The kind of question we specifically don't like here but ironically end up with 500+ upvotes, like stackoverflow.com/questions/5311334.
One thing SO has taught me is reward is inversely proportional to effort. A good life lesson.
@JeremyBanks Lol, .

@RobertCartaino just like programmers was misnamed until it got the title, "Software Engineering" - this site is misnamed. May I suggest, "doohickeyhacks.stackexchange" instead? — Aaron Hall 27 secs ago
@JasonC I think that’s a good question. The trouble is that there aren’t very many of those kinds of questions and they can only be asked once.
(Would I ask it? Goodness, no. I can RTFM. But it probably doesn’t hurt.)
@AlexisKing the trouble is really that they so often aren't asked just once, and usually aren't asked that well.
I don't particularly care for world-building's expansive scope (I'd prefer a site that worked more closely within the bounds of reality), but I think LH would be better served by expanding their scope a little. There's only so many things you can do with egg cartons and paper towel tubes.
@Shog9 And lo, The Lords Jeff and Joel gave us exact duplicates, and the community created canonical questions, and it was Good.
@AaronHall You must be joking. LH’s scope is big enough to drive a car through it.

Is that like a common everyday car you might have laying around the house? :P
Today in Docs Spam news: spammers switched from JavaScript to itext, and Kevin implemented rate-limiting at about 18:30
Creating more than one new user per minute is a challenge, it would appear.
@Shog9 spare us your objective data. I will dogmatically cling to my biased beliefs that.. wait, docs spam?
user315433
The actual content of itext looks vaguely spamish anyway...
user315433
HelloWorldInternational.java (iText 5)
HelloWorldInternational.java (iText 7)
HelloWorldStyles.java (iText 5)
HelloWorldStyles.java (iText 7)
... and on and on
@AaronHall Ah I love that site so much, lol.

unfreezes Tavern on the Meta
I have nothing to contribute there it's just fun to read the answers.
world building?
meh
user315433
The real world building site is Engineering. And it isn't nearly as popular.
I think we need to solve settling Antarctica and building underground cities before we move to other planets.

Most professional software developers extrapolated to force to force extrapolation extrapolation software subscription, customized.
Spider pool rental search extrapolated traces of rhino-generation soup Yan surprisingly whistled, while the pack. Tang Yan sneered rhinoceros but continue to ask:!! "Miss Hayley please answer my question you said, obviously, is my client crashed through your relationship with the deceased, even holding a knife to stab her that you but the witness, but also big fights once dead, she did not know how he suddenly becomes part of the situation you talk to the dead.

I, too, find it undesirable when my shark shark turns into a brisk performance.
Shades of Slim's earlier rant about math-deficient programmers
user315433
I like math-deficient programmers. My top SO answer is an explanation that "x=0 or y=0" can be expressed as x*y=0.
user315433
The rant was about the students thinking that software can do all the math that anyone needs.
Sounds like a call for a blog post
