For an idea: we currently have 253,952 sockets open (at our slowest part of the day). I’ll look tomorrow and see what peak looks like.
Haven't seen an update yet...

I think I understand why Microsoft's ILMerge was never remade into something more than a research project
Don't think there is any way using it could be legal in most of real world scenarios.
Unless you are just merging YOUR libraries, in which case you could probably use something else in the first place

@Telkitty No, you shouldn't. Camping is meant to be back to basics. Our parents-parents also survived without phones, so you can assume one night without being online should be doable ...
On all other days this month when I drove home from work, it turned out to become a record traffic jam, I'm leaving now for home. If you don't hear back from me for awhile you know what happened....

Moderators get vacation time too, right?
I'm floor warden, someone said I get 2 extra weeks of vacation for it, but my boss never mentioned it. But they work for the building, not my firm, so what do they know?
Makes mental note to procrastinate on warden training

user315433
Yes, you can take a vacation by setting your moderator status as inactive for a period of time.

All I know is I'm supposed to make sure everyone gets off the floor in an emergency.

user315433
By U.S. standards, 2 extra weeks of vacation sounds unlikely. More likely it's 2 extra hours of vacation.

6:21 PM
@AaronHall Sounds like good practice for becoming a Stack Overflow moderator :-)
Seeing emergencies and kicking people out.

@AaronHall To be honest with you (now that I'm basicly primaried out I can say it without sounding like self serving) I would really like to vote for you, I think you're qualified and all, but you have more stuff on your plate then any 3 members combined
You got so much stuff in real life it feels like you'll hardly have the time

It's a pity you got primaried out, @Magisch.

@S.L.Barth ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Yeah, not much to be done about it. FWIW, I voted for you, and you were one of the people I'd like to see as a moderator.

Maybe in a couple years
I'm 22, I'm in no hurry

6:31 PM
Meanwhile build up more rep and make some friends.

I think rep was the #1 problem
Maybe that and flags/votes but the latter comes very organically

gotta get them imaginary internet points

I spend most of my work day on here anyways for one reason or another
Between SE and manuals, I hardly have to leave this place to do my work

Like it or hate it, when you're a programmer you always end up on Stack Overflow....

I like it. This site feels ... clean and generally constructive
Everything gets an air of people not deliberately being unconstructive
It's so refreshing and addicting after 10+ years in various online communities that only had one thing in common and that was drama and needless emotion over everything

6:35 PM
You're sure you're active on MSO? :-P

@S.L.Barth You have no idea how far a cry even the worst stuff on MSO is compared to say minecraftforum.net

I believe it.
Moderation can truly make or break a site.

The dark side of SE is still 100x less annoying and nerve wracking then daily business on most other sites

I tried to avoid the US elections on my social media, because I don't get to vote anyway. My media feed, however, was full of hate - from both camps.

It's gotten to a point where sometimes I really can't summon the energy to engage on more then surface level on say reddit anymore. Because I see the moderation on there and I'm like "This is such dog**** compared to SO, what an infinite waste of my time"

6:41 PM
Yup. Those are a few things I like about SO.
The "be nice" policy (which is actually the "don't be a jerk" policy) is pursued indiscriminately.
And if you're going to make a point in a post, you must back it up with verifiable facts.
.....if we enforced that on other media, some of them wouldn't even survive....
I mean, imagine, verifiable facts instead of re-hashing memes.... you'd actually have to, like, think! :-S

@AaronHall It's just somebody who posted their personal ad on the wrong site. It happens.

@zaq wasn't the votes table in SEDE to be sanitized for deleted posts? if yes, why does this return rows: data.stackexchange.com/stackoverflow/query/580449

user315433
@rene No, apparently it always included votes on deleted posts.

user315433
@NormalHuman: I was a bit surprised that votes for deleted posts existed, but I don't think they were added as a part of this change. From what I can tell looking at the revision history, votes on deleted post have been available since the beginning. (Don't hold me to that, however. I'm a bit rusty reading other people's code. ;) — Jon Ericson ♦ Sep 16 '15 at 17:37

ah, OK

user315433
I think the idea is that the votes on deleted posts aren't themselves deleted: they still affect the post score, count toward badges and public vote statistics. A deleted vote is one that's nullified in some way, and those aren't included in the dump.

7:41 PM
general election begins in 19 minutes, are you ready?

@AaronHall No, I'm never ready ...
@zaq yeah, that make sense. I didn't notice it earlier I guess because I tend to join with the posts table. And the queries that sum and count the deleted posts data goes unnoticed

So I won't know anything until the voting period is up, now, will I?

Correct
So...go enjoy the weekend :)

I voted :)

I could enjoy it more if I could obsessively update tallies.

8:07 PM
@AaronHall This could be your last quiet weekend - enjoy it while it lasts!

@AaronHall Assume everything is at 0 and then at the last second on Monday everyone votes. They only get 1 second, and the winner is announced after that second.

user315433
@AaronHall You can obsessively update the count of Constituent badges. (Which will also disprove the above assumption)

8:23 PM
I got mine :)

1320 ish people have voted in this election, at 60 per badge page...

there is only one candidate in there that I would consider to be grossly unqualified so

8:36 PM
@Magisch Yep.. same here. We're probably thinking of the same candidate.

user315433
For the record, the badge count before this election was 96149. (This count goes down between elections, due to user deletion).

user315433

user315433
Election trend. Note that the intervals on the horizontal axis are not constant time intervals.

user315433
Hm, maybe they should be, so that concavity/convexity can be correctly determined.

user315433

8:48 PM
Good call

user315433
The chronologically correct version. The number of eligible voters grows slightly faster than linear, the rest have sublinear growth.

user315433
So, what model should we use to predict the statistics of election #8? Looks like power law should work, but the trend in earlier elections was different. Maybe fit a power function ax^b to three most recent data points (5,6,7).

I think we're seeing some attrition in the active users.

@AaronHall There's always attrition, isn't there?

user315433
For power law to make sense, the horizontal axis should have a canonical zero mark... I guess July 31, 2008 is a sensible zero mark for SO-related things.

8:56 PM
I wonder if it indicates that there is a limiting force on the number of active users the site can support, based on its current model.

user315433
Isn't it odd that the Main Phase of election takes 5 days, and half of that falls on a weekend? A pre-holiday weekend, too.

@zaq Well it does make sense to have the election before the holidays..

user315433
@AaronHall So, using logistic growth model for the last three curve? Possible.

user315433
Here the holiday already started, since we get the whole week off. As a result, I can't give my students a project "predict SO election turnout". :(

user315433
Even if next week wasn't off, the weekend still interferes.

user315433
8:59 PM
Primary takes the prime voting time of the week, and the Main phase is shoved off to a weekend. Boo.

@zaq That's too bad. It would be a nice thing to use for sampling realtime data.
@zaq That does seem to be a little weird yes....

@AaronHall It makes sense. There are several non scaling points that make the site harder to follow
like the frontpage

user315433
Sampling isn't hard here, it's the model choice and deciding whether there was a phase change between 1-4 and 5-7 elections...

Did they promote it identically?
I think they may have.

user315433
The season seems to matter; November elections are not as well attended.

user315433
9:09 PM
It's hard to fit something sensible to the vote count: 4970, 4994, 4426, 6574, 21571, 27019, 27321...

user315433
Even if we disregard 1-4 as ancient history, the last three numbers don't agree between themselves on what the trend is.

user315433
Okay, my prediction is: there will be 30837 voters this time. (Logarithmic fit to the last three points). Probably an overestimate.

user315433
Shipped: a new idea for something big we could do @StackOverflow - just circulated initial doc internally. Very nervous about the reception.

@zaq yeah, I'm not that active on SO, guess one time I was on a rather big "off" wave.

user315433
Your first badge, awarded June 2012, was retroactive for the Fall 2011 election. You haven't participated in Spring 2011.

9:41 PM
@zaq oh, so I did vote in all other elections? Cool, wasn't sure about that.

user315433
Each badge has a link to the specific election it is for.

(back in 2011 I was too new, probably, didn't feel right to vote or maybe wasn't even aware of this whole thing.)

user315433
There are 121 users who voted in all of the first 7 SO elections.

@zaq how can you tell so easily? You got some script?
121 is not much

user315433
9:44 PM
Enter Constituent.

huh, nice!

user315433
Many of those 121 names are very familiar.

@zaq well, makes sense...
Wonder if Jon Skeet is among them?
Nope. Only Jon is Jonathan Leffler

user315433
Five of them are SE employees: Adam Lear, animuson, Oded, Pops, Tim Post.

user315433
Shog is conspicuously missing.

@zaq yup, but none from SE management.
(unless Tim Post is considered management?)

He kind of is, nowadays.

user315433

@zaq maybe he's voting from a sock account... ;)

user315433
Jon Skeet voted only once, in Fall 2011. Tsk, tsk.

I wonder if there are users who vote more then once using sock accounts.... probably the worst thing one can do.

Jeff stopped voting after 2014. And Joel never voted in SO elections.

@zaq Joel probably never cared for those things... Jeff did, but after leaving the company, can't blame him for losing interest.
What about you, @zaq?

user315433
I'm kind of new around here. Voted in 6,7,8.

@zaq new? hmm... for some reason I thought Normal was a user for years... maybe just because you were so active. :)

@zaq you mean amount of downloads? The average- overall quality might explain it. It works, but nothing more.
Something basic as revisions... nada. Seeing list of questions user posted? nope. And the iOS app does have those things, that's the sad part. (sad for android users)
And with that, going to watch misery and sadness in GoT season 6. Cya! :D

user315433
ru.SO had a kind of posts that weren't Q&A but were posted in the same stream. What were they called, again?...

"исследование", i.e., "a study" or "a survey". Basically, bloglike articles.

11:32 PM
@roryalsop hope so! I am excite... hoping for good reception internally, and later on with Meta...
Since when does Meta not have pitchforks?

Usually when folks propose useful ideas to address well-documented problems and honestly want feedback.

... yeah, even then...

user315433
What's the relevant well documented problem?

hey, you wanted hints, not revelations...

user315433
Okay, my working hypothesis is that the problem is incessant duplication of low level questions and the solution is article-type content against which questions may be closed (dup-marked)

user315433
11:49 PM
Documentation ostensibly meant to address that, too. But it lacks narrative. It's become a collection of snippets. No progression from basic to advanced.

user315433
Unrelated: out of my blog posts written in 2016, the one getting most views is "string matching in Google Docs/Sheets"
