Niceness is orthogonal to quality, @kapa. The problem is one of volume - so wasting effort on indiscriminate fly-swatting is as much a part of the problem as wasting effort on indiscriminate hand-holding. The most efficient way to discourage someone asking bad questions is to just ignore them: don't fix their post, don't leave comments, don't close or answer - downvote it so that fewer people see it, and focus your efforts on questions that can be of use to others. — Shog9 ♦ Jun 4 '14 at 15:19

4:01 AM
The real problem is neither fly-swatting nor hand holding. The problem is that on our table is a pile of dead animals and we have consciously decided to not set up fly zappers.

I got an idea while reading, maybe a dialog box saying "You are almost finished to post your question, click okey to delete it all and start again" would be helpful ;) — Braiam 1 hour ago

user259867
If there was a pile of dead animals on my table.... setting up fly zappers wouldn't be my first idea.

Yes, we have two problems:
1. HUGE broken windows!
2. Not enough mod tools to keep new crap away
3. Inability to push shift-enter
Honestly, archiving everything and starting anew doesn't sound like a bad idea to me.

Hello. A question/answer from 2008 was cited as a recommendation to do something which may have been questionable at the time but now is probably incorrect. stackoverflow.com/questions/316352/… IS there a way to either a) correct this, or at least b) comment that this answer may be out of date. c) delete it if it would be considered off topic now.
I ask also as a general question, how to handle these cases as over time what was good practice may change. meta.stackexchange.com/questions/264110/…

You can only fix that with a moderator flag but make sure you explain clearly why you want that lock removed.
interesting revision history... stackoverflow.com/posts/316352/revisions

I agree. A well explained custom mod flag is needed.

Flags should not be used to indicate technical inaccuracies in the post...

11:45 AM
Hm yes, that is true. But what if the advice is wrong AND can't be voted on?

Nothing, we should move on. Write a better post with facts, if possible. It will gradually get upvoted. Mods will not delete a highly upvoted post because a single user says it's wrong.

[ SmokeDetector ] Few unique characters in body, repeating characters in title: closeddddddddddddddddd by Estonia_girl on stackoverflow.com

A better post would be an option. But we still have highly upvoted, outdated advice.

As long as the older compilers exist, that advice will be useful for people.

12:02 PM
OK, let me elaborate a little bit. If a historical lock is present on a question and you are 110% sure after checking with peers in chat and on meta that the lock is there for the wrong reason, you'll need a moderator to fix that. But I'm in favor of not touching it, write a new post (or find a better dupe) and leave a comment on the question or the answers to the better post. Comment cleanup might be needed to get your comment in the view.
So, I'm with the duck but needed to type some text to not feel bad about it...

The lock is there for the right reason. But you can't comment on a locked question.

Oh .....
OK, the duck is correct, once again.... I'll go back answering regex questions...

@PeterLawrey that kind of lock are better to expire after some time, the community re-evaluates the Q&A pair and decide
And again, I'm not saying we need to have this question, I agree that it's not optimal for many reasons. What I'm saying is, I'm not deleting another one like this until we have some place to put what useful information it contains. — Tim Post ♦ Jun 27 at 12:37
for example, once that ^ is done, the question in, well, question will be deleted

@Braiam Back to Peter Lawrey's issue - I don't want automatic expiration of locks.
I think the real issue is that the advice is outdated, and we'd want to warn people that the advice does not hold for more modern compilers.

can a mod edit an historical locked question?
without removing the lock that is...

12:36 PM
@PeterLawrey I think it's best to create a new question. And then link to the existing question, explaining that the advice there is outdated.

By linking, Google may pick it up faster, and if we're lucky the link to the new question will also appear next to the old question.

@S.L.Barth I think that a good community re-evaluates locked questions to verify: a) there's a better content somewhere else; b) the content needs to be moved somewhere; c) the content is stalled and therefore obsolete and needs to be removed

I'm willling to re-evaluate a lock, but expiration does not seem a good tool to me.

12:45 PM
Moving the content elsewhere is often not an option. Questions over 6 months old can't be migrated to other SE sites.

@S.L.Barth who spoke to move it to another SE site...

OK, then where should it be moved?

sometimes, the content is no good on SE and should be moved somewhere not on SE, ie. GitHub github.com/vhf/free-programming-books/blob/master/…

I'm working on a faq-proposed for suggested edits, but I need to think a bit about the part about boldface and italics.
They are my pet peeves, but how can I give an objective advice on when to use / not use boldface and italics?

Don't overuse it
A bit is fine, but you can't go around doing this:
Hello stackoverflow, I have a programming question. It is about java. Why is java class must be public class? Why cannot be private class? Can I make it public class?
You know, that kind of spit

Heh. I'll show you what I have now.
But it's still too much my opinion now:
> You can put things in boldface or italics, but do this only when it is really necessary. Emphasis is used to draw extra attention to the reader. If almost everything demands extra attention, then nothing will get extra attention.
As a rule of thumb, before putting something in boldface or italics, ask yourself: if I could put only one thing in this post in boldface or italics, would it be this? If the answer is no, then don't.
