@bjb568 is is a hackathon or a conference or both

Both.

@bjb568 (I'm reading the FAQ) So are you on a "team" with people from your school?

Yeup.

@bjb568 First year doing it?

Yeoop.

12:04 AM
Okay, how about this @bjb: the time I have spent reading and talking and most things not relating to technology has made me a better human and allowed me to help others a lot. The time I have spent with technology has made me better with technology, given me a possible career choice, and perhaps allowed me to help others a little. Which is more important?

They are both things that you should do.

Perhaps, but what comes first?

And your anecdotal evidence does not let us draw a conclusion about the behavior of all humans.
@hichris123 Depends on what order you prefer them to be in.

@bjb568 Is there a list of schools that have participated? (I'm interested if there are any schools up towards Dayton that are doing it)

@bjb568 No, but read books by Dickens. Or Shakespear. Or almost any famous classical author. They each tell us something about being human.

12:07 AM
Anderson High School
Archbishop McNicholas High School
Clark Montessori Junior & Senior High School
Deer Park Jr/Sr High School
Hamilton High School
Holy Cross High School
Hughes STEM High School
Indian Hill High School
Seven Hills High School
Little Miami High School
Loveland High School
Madeira High School
Mother of Mercy High School
Oak Hills High School
Oyler High School
Robert A. Taft IT High School
Summit Country Day School
Sycamore High School
Taylor High School
Turpin High School
Ursuline Academy
@hichris123 No, they do not. They offer a reading experience that has the potential to be beneficial.
BTW, "Holy Cross High School"? RLY?

@bjb568 How do they not tell us something about being human?

@bjb568 How many students participate overall?

@hichris123 Because your statement is too vague, ambiguous, over-simplistic, and cannot be supported.

<now back to your regularly scheduled program, with a few flags>

@hichris123 Ew, you spammer.

Ok, my bot probably won't do that again.

@bjb568 I think there's a specific, unambiguous, able-to-be-supported word for that statement: pedantic. It's a generic idea that you can apply to all (well, almost all) authors. Because they either want us to believe something, or want to teach us something about being human. Or perhaps a few other things, but those are usually more specific.
Okay, last one that needs a close vote: stackoverflow.com/questions/27345642/…
Thanks @Kevin @HoboSapiens.

@hichris123 There's a difference between "I like to read" and "All books give us a lesson, a missing piece of us that makes us human, they are the blood of civilization…"
coz the latter is meaningless crap

@bjb568 The former is a thought, the latter is a universal truth.
except for the last bit, but...

12:17 AM
There is no such thing as a universal truth.

Before I forget, somebody needs to teach @bjb568 to use some sort of object modeling when writing nodejs web applications.

@hichris123 You're welcome. Could use one more vote on this: stackoverflow.com/q/28522294/1864610

12:19 AM
@bjb568 Why do you say that?

@hichris123 Gosh - I didn't know you cared.

hah

@hichris123 WTH is it even supposed to mean?
Can you describe it and prove that there exists one?

Not everything needs to be proved...

Yes, it most certainly does.

12:21 AM
I mean, suppose I say "Books can teach humans something". I can't prove it. But I'm positive that books can teach humans something.

Can teach what humans what?
You can't prove a weak statement, sure.

That's not the point.....

@bjb568 I can.
BAM!
(jk)

@hichris123 You don't have a point.
You have an idea in your head, right?
You think you know how the universe works.
That involves books, and humans.
You are trying to convince me that your idea is correct.
The problem is you don't know what your own idea is, you cannot communicate it, I don't know what your idea is, and there is nothing that can support your idea.
With this situation, you're not going to be able to convince me.

@bjb568 You've completely missed the point, then.

12:28 AM
I mean a very small part of the universe. A simple truth.

Let's make it simple: books > code. That's my point.

The comparison is meaningless.

Why?

Q: How should screen time be treated to balance the pro of education resources on the internet and con of decreased involvement in other activities?

bjb568Screen time is a tricky subject. Obviously, there is a risk of distraction and a minimum level of maturity ne...

@hichris123 "I think starred messages have more value than messages that aren't starred"

Reading can teach you things about... well, almost anything. Writing code can't.

12:30 AM
Every part of the statement is subjective and none of it can be argued.
It's extremely vague.
In what way, under what circumstances do which books offer greater benefit to whom than what kind of coding?

Subjective, yes, but I think we can come to a conclusion. All of this is my opinion of course, but I think someone could publish a paper on it.
I'm going to go do something productive now. :P
