Quick question: How selective is Stack Exchange as an employer?

why don't you find it out? ;)

No plans to apply at this time.
Bad job market means entry-level positions are extremely rare.

@bjb568 huh, they work now, must be caching

12:24 AM
Virtually all positions in the computing industry require some work experience outside of the classroom.

Q: Does Stack Exchange use caching and if so, how?

SarahRecently, I read this Stack Overflow blog post about how they have some of their infrastructure laid out. I was curious to know, does Stack Exchange use caching (both at the application layer and/or database layer) and if so, how?

Of course—it would otherwise be prohibitively expensive (read: "impossible") for the system to scale to the level of activity Stack Overflow has these days. It's the biggest reason Stack Exchange runs so efficiently today. — DragonLord the Fiery Jul 14 at 18:28
> biggest reason
...should be reinterpreted as "only reason".

:p

Not to mention that even if you had the capacity to handle hundreds of millions of hits per day without caching, your response times would be rather slow which could lead to an SEO penalty.
I say impossible because it would likely take tens of thousands of servers spread across several dozen datacenters around the world, each connected to an ultra-high-speed network to ensure everyone gets consistent data in a timely fashion, to scale to this many daily impressions. It would cost billions of dollars to do this. Stack Exchange obviously does not have this much money.
It also makes absolutely no technical sense.
My personal blog isn't cached and the server would crumble under load if it sees even two million hits a day.
This may be fine for a personal website that gets only a few hundred impressions a day, but it becomes prohibitively expensive to scale it up without some form of performance enhancement.
...and said SEO penalty would prevent Stack Exchange from receiving tens or hundreds of millions of daily impressions in the first place, as users won't see the posts on the first Google Search results page.
There simply is no alternative to caching, in any way, shape, or form. It's just not possible.
Period, end of story.

12:40 AM
Is @bjb568 supposed to be surprised that SE needs caching?

Many programming interviews these days seem to emphasize data structures like binary trees and hash tables. Sadly, I have not spent much time working with them.
I think we need some kind of job preparation course that covers the skills vital to the programming industry.
Going through six years of college education and graduating with an MS in computer science is one thing. Being able to effectively work on large-scale software projects is another.
The gap between college and career simply needs to be bridged.

Having done working on open-source project would help (or so I believe)

I agree

I'm in talks with my closest classmates, counselors, and advisers to make the transition as smooth as possible.

user202362
@shog let's have a deal, you unban me on meta & I'll pray for you that your neighbour would grow a better vege patch or maybe a fruit forest between the deer and your backyard?

I learnt so much in my final year industry project

I am more than halfway through my MS and I need to be job-ready by the time I graduate.
For some reason, I feel I would be best working as some sort of administrator in the IT field (systems, network, etc.), but programming would also be an appropriate career path for me.
My skill set could make me ideal for a DevOps environment, but whether this is indeed the case remains to be seen.

Is there a reason this SEDE query doesn't return floating-point values for avg(score)?
I tried applying the type cast outside the aggregate function but I wind up with a syntax error.

probably integer division
49
A: how to get a float result by dividing two integer values?

RichardThe suggestions from stb and xiowl are fine if you're looking for a constant. If you need to use existing fields or parameters which are integers, you can cast them to be floats first: SELECT CAST(1 AS float) / CAST(3 AS float) or SELECT CAST(MyIntField1 AS float) / CAST(MyIntField2 AS floa...

But...
2
A: Precision of aggregate function on 'INTERVAL HOUR TO MINUTE' datatype in SQL

avg(CAST(Score AS FLOAT)) AS AverageScore works
I believe it's integer division (score & rowCount are integer), but I don't know why

Huh. I guess I got the CAST() syntax wrong.
avg(CAST(Score AS DECIMAL(7,2))) AS AverageScore
This is what I was initially trying to do.

:)

Somehow, I forgot the correct syntax for CAST and wound up entering:
avg(CAST Score AS DECIMAL(7,2)) AS AverageScore
...and this would result in round-off error excessive loss of precision as the average is computed from inputs with two decimal places.

3:48 AM
@DragonLordtheFiery You probably want:
FORMAT (AVG (CAST (Score AS FLOAT) ), '#,###.##') AS AverageScore

Never knew about the FORMAT() function.

Well then, I've earned my pay tonight! :D

+10
+15

This is the final result:
SELECT
  DisplayName,
  Users.Id,
  Reputation,
  count(*) AS PostCount,
format(avg(CAST(Score AS FLOAT)), '#,###.000') AS AverageScore
FROM
  Users
    INNER JOIN Posts ON (Users.Id = Posts.OwnerUserId)
GROUP BY
  DisplayName,
  Users.Id,
  Reputation
HAVING
  count(*) >= 10
ORDER BY
  AverageScore DESC,
  PostCount DESC;
The line in question is now:
format(avg(CAST(Score AS FLOAT)), '#,###.000') AS AverageScore
Notice the zeroes in the format string. I wanted fixed-point output.

Huh, I woulda expected higher averages than that. But I see 8 suspects on Stack Overflow that have averages an order of magnitude more than anybody else. Hmmm...

For some reasons, the query sorted the average in absolute value. I have one -8 in the middle of 8's average scores

@DragonLordtheFiery Interesting! This is similar in spirit to the SEDE query I used here

4:09 AM
And 73 is smaller than 8......

The formatted result is a string, not a number, resulting in unexpected sorting behavior. Hang on while I fix it...

DragonLordI'm finding it very difficult to write complex SQL queries involving joins across many (at least 3-4) tables and involving several nested conditions. I wonder if they're using separate gear for it if some smaller retailers aren't using a dedicated line and it's dialling each time? I used to run an EFTPOS machine that way because it was 99% mail orders so no point having a dedicated line, a local shop does too and it seems like about 20 seconds.
