4:00 PM
@ProgramFOX someone here is hungry! ;)

If you go to meat.stackexchange.com, you do get a link to A51, @Bart.
Not a redirect, but still.

ooh, never knew

Well now you know. And knowing is half the battle.
The other half is violence.

Hey, man. We're talking about a battle here. If half of it is knowing, the other half isn't going to be rainbows and kittens.
3

4:05 PM
What about violent kittens? Compromise?

If anything it's going to be rainbows in depressing shades of beige and kittens in battle-armour.

Arqade question titles, how I love thee.

Q: Is it a bad idea to take drugs?

JutschgeIn Skyrim there are a few drugs and alcoholic beverages and I couldn't really figure out whether or not there are big disadvantages. I always rely on my own potions because I'm not sure about the side effects ofthose things. Can you get addicted by certain drugs (let's say Skooma) or can the gam...

@ChrisForrence I like the picture that @Bart paints.

4:12 PM
Do they realize that using one of the most hated peripheral in videogame history for an ads on Arqade will cause reactions comparable with AVGN ones?
also.... is a coincidence that ROB had that ET-like look?
is that shape cursed in the game world?

I had said yesterday here that these two users are same.. ajay patel and jay patel... I don't care but it seems this user acting somewhat like a psycho. I am not sure this might be my assumption but I think he just downvoted my post today.
I don't care about points but just want to confirm whether he is the downvoter or not.. is it possible to know? I don't want to know who downvoted if he is not the downvoter.
May be I am thinking too much

@GnomeSlice Nice
@Mr_Green Voting is anonymous, period. Nobody is going to tell you who voted on what.

ok.. I don't want to push you.. thanks
if he did downvote, it is kind of weird act.. because he downvoted after more than one day..
nvm.. leave it

It's not me you're pushing. Don't worry. It's just that votes are anonymous as a fact. So nobody is going to inform you. Not a mod, not a dev. And guessing usually doesn't really help anyone either @Mr_Green

4:28 PM
yup..

To add to what @Bart said, Ignorance is bliss.

doesn't applies to psychos :)

Does SE search Google Search Appliance? Just curious.

use @devnull?

@Bart Yes, does it use?

4:35 PM
No, it doesn't afaik

Lucene?

Q: New Stack Exchange Search, Try it out!

Nick CraverFor a few reasons, we recently changed the guts of how search works on our sites. If you keep up, you've probably read somewhere that we were using SQL Server Full Text Search. There are a few areas that utilize search that all got a replacement tonight: Search itself (box in the upper right)...

Yep

@Bart isn't it Elastic Search?

Thanks, @Bart.

Q: A new search engine for Stack Exchange

Nick CraverAfter the performance problems we have run into with Lucene.NET we've decided to make a change, we're moving the network on to elasticsearch. Here's where to get started: http://stackoverflow.com/search What works: All search operators should be in Many changes below from the old search behav...

Ah, you're right @ShadowWizard

Thanks for the update, @ShadowWizard!

edited the older post to reflect this. :)

Hey, sorry but where do I find formatting help for chat. (I'm specifically interested in the QA block that @ShadowWizard posted just now.)

@devnull it's oneboxing

4:40 PM

just post link to a post or comment in any Stack Exchange site

nobody authorised you to reveal the secrets of the chat

Q: Keeping a count of words in a list without using any count method in python?

user3343972I need to keep a count of words in the list that appear once in a list, and one list for words that appear twice without using any count method, I tried using a set but it removes only the duplicate not the original. now look what you've done

/me can't talk anymore, burns too much

I'm holding you responsible
well, the pile of ash that used to be you

The title is incredible, isn't it? (Keeping count .. without count ..)

No edit message mocking me @ShadowWizard? How disappointing.

4:43 PM
I am disappoint.

@Bart the fire hasn't gone out yet

Poor Bart.

he's not the one on fire

@jadarnel27 the problem with that site was that it was so large that nothing was too localized.

oh well, we can "poor bart" if youw ant

4:45 PM
oh, poor Shadow :P
that's what I get for skimming the transcript :P

I need a userscript so that when I set fire to people their avatars burst into flames and fall from the user list to the bottom of the screen before rolling around in agony
is that too much to ask?

o_0

forget that, it shouldn't be a userscript, it should be a user level and it should be standard functionality on chat for users at that user level

Perhaps you need a desk near a window. Where you can see sunlight and trees. And possibly a therapist.
=)

I don't need to see a therapist
no therapist is qualified enough to help me

4:48 PM
yeah, no therapist deserves that ;-P
the sun thing is a good idea though
vitamin D
good stuff

Mmmmmm vitamin D

@Shog9 HOW RUDE

Perhaps some kind of shaman or mystic then, @Flyk?

grabs bottle of vitamin D and empties into mouth

@Shog9 is now officially my therapist
4
everybody share your condolences with him now

4:49 PM
But Vitamin D doesn't put a smile on my face, and make the world better.

@Undo Check your dosage. Are you aware of hypervitaminosis D?

also: 10 minutes until hometime

@devnull no. You get that from lying in the sun, right?

sentences @Flyk to urgent production support issues that delay hometime by at least 30 minutes

I'm sorry, I am immune to random workloads at hometime

4:52 PM
tries to find @Flyk's website so he can do something evil to it

I stop work 30 minutes before hometime just so I can make sure I can leave on time
by 30 minutes early, I mean I start work 2 hours after I arrive, work for 30 minutes, and then Stack Exchange the rest of the day
@Undo I don't have a website

@Undo No, not from the sun. But you get it by grabs bottle of vitamin D and empties into mouth. It's caused by megadoses.

oh

Darn it. I've been foiled! And not the distributive property type. Or the aluminum wrap type.

@devnull Sounds like a fun disease. grabs another bottle

4:53 PM
and if I did, I keep my various hiding places on the internet completely secret from each other :p

Then where do you work, so that I can go cause an urgent production issue?

@Undo Oh no! The main consequence of vitamin D toxicity is a buildup of calcium in your blood (hypercalcemia), which can cause symptoms such as poor appetite, nausea and vomiting. Weakness, frequent urination and kidney problems also may occur.

yay!

@Undo you can't cause me an urgent issue, I'm highly protected

oh.
@devnull orders 55-gallon drum of concentrated vitamin D from Amazon

4:54 PM
I have, of course, made the assumption that Flyk's job duties cause her to be affected by production issues. Which is quite possibly false.

oh it is
but there is no way that you can keep me at work with just 5 minutes to go

Haha, nice.
You are, as they say, doing it right.

in order for an issue to be important enough for me to look at it, the customer would have to be on fire, with the world ending, and first, second and third line support would have to have gone home
if the world of one of our customers ends right now
it will still be stuck with first line support by the time I go home

@Shog9 You seem to love Natural Born Killers?

which is in four minutes

4:56 PM
that's random

random is good though
you know what? I'm not waiting these three minutes to go home
BYE

5:14 PM
So...the close vote queue is lookin' pretty good. Is it fuzzied to three close votes?

Yes, it is

^^^what he says

It went up 2 questions just now... I need to start closing those...

Oh hey, you can hover over the 4.8K part to get a more precise number. I didn't know that!

You can also look here

5:22 PM
I'm rather impressed with the number of people working in the close vote queue. Naively dividing the number of reviews today (~5400) by 40 shows approximately 135 people maxing out CV reviews so far today.
Granted, that's way less than the number of people with >3k rep.
Still, that's 135 people volunteering their time to help clean up the site, just today, just in that one queue.

Did the rundown of the weekend closings ever get posted?

Yeah, I asked hichris123 to add that number of reviews to his graph as well

@Andy I don't think so.
@Shog9 said running those numbers wasn't as straightforward as he had hoped.
@rene That would be cool.

Welcome to the wonderful world of word filters.
Luckily you can always have an issue instead

5:52 PM
Add issue to the problem filter

People should just use smarter-sounding words that are similar to "problem." Like "quandary."

Add quandary to the problem filter

I can see that going in a positive direction. Especially considering how up in arms people got about the problem filter in the first place.

I simply want to prevent users posting problems/issues/quandries. Only positive, happy stuff is allowed.
Hmm, I left a comment on a question here on meta asking for clarification but now that question is removed

A noble goal. rene for moderator!

6:05 PM
Nah

Fine.
@rene Is your name pronounced like "clean" or like "delay?" Or something else?

Uhhh
I always pronounce it as rené
I think delay is closer

Makes sense. Thank you for doing the needful.
I knew a guy named René years ago. He was French Canadian.
Lived in Connecticut.

It is name we borrowed from the french

Oh yeah? What is your nationality, if you don't mind my asking?

6:18 PM
I'm dutch

Cool.

Indeed, almost always cool here, and rainy

Ah. I suppose that's nice, if you prefer cool to hot.

I am so into this retro-revival stuff lately
can't get enough

One of my coworkers just got back from visiting his family in India, and he said it was in the 90's during the day most days he was there.
(Fahrenheit)

6:23 PM
I'm used to it but I can handle the heat in sunny california as well :-)
@GnomeSlice retro it is...

I'm pretty sure I was just serial upvoted..

wow

Someone with a sockpuppet doesn't understand he has to upvote his own questions not on a random user?

7:17 PM
hi everyone !

hey hey

Hahaha, that was the weirdest experience ever @AnnaLear

what was?

I click rollback, the page reloads, and I see my own ... no wait, that's Anna ...

hahah nice

7:20 PM
Or are you now simply taking credit for all my brilliant edits?

I would never.

I just see, guys voted wrong as duplicate for this question stackoverflow.com/questions/22231542/…

How is that wrong @TGMCians? Seems correct to me?

OP question was not to "Simple way to repeat a String in java"

Yes it was, in essence.

7:22 PM
The question was "how do I repeat '-' several times".

OP question was to replace the character with -

No, not exactly.
He says he knows how long a specific word is.

> For example, say the word is "dogs". The length method will return 4. Now I want to convert that into ----.

And then wants to generate a new string of equal length, made of the character '-'
that refers to the length (4), not to the word "dogs"
I'm guessing the OP of the highest upvoted answer has your interpretation as well, but the answer shows that in that case the length is unimportant.

I don't think it is correctly closed, anyway

7:26 PM
By all means vote to reopen. But I don't think that's necessary (and not necessarily correct)

Hi guys

hey o/

Can I ask for someone support?

Fire away

shoot

7:29 PM
I've done one error for sure
but I'd like to have your opinion
can I provide the link?

you can

Sure, if it's something us community members can handle/advice on

@Revious Stop bothering people. NOW. This is your last warning.
@Gilles Gilles. I wasn't bothering any one. I asked Izzy if he wanted to listen me and he asnwered yes.
question closed for me
@Gilles also please, can you specify what will be if you interpret my behaviour as "bothering" people?
@Revious Not dropping an issue when told to do so. Which evidently you don't understand, so goodbye.

Okay, what about that little interaction?

my 3rd sentence wasn't for poking

7:31 PM
So ...

but maybe it looked like?
Since I got banned on the chat

Well, to some extent you've got a history weighing against you

yes, I know..
but it seemed a bit harsh that behaviour
I wanted just to know your opinion on that

Take it as an "enough is enough". At that point it's just best to take a break an "walk away"

ok.. I understand..

7:34 PM
Even if you're not at fault (I don't know the entire conversation) anything you follow it up with is likely to agitate the other person.

sorry for my english

Your English is just fine. No worries.

you mean that my way of speaking is agitating people?

No, not precisely
Say I tell you "Please stop talking"
Then the best thing to do is to stop talking, right?
Or at most acknowledge and say "I understand" and then move on.
It isn't a good idea to then keep on going and ask for clarification.

ok, I understand what you mean

7:36 PM
(Of course the assumption here is a particular chain of events. If I tell you to stop talking, you can probably ignore it for now ;) )

but am I wrong if I say that for sure if someone says you to stop talking and you immediately stop, probably the other guy is your boss, is not very polite (or maybe he is aiming with a gun toward you :-p ).. I mean.. a moderator shouldn't be a bit more diplomatic?
allow me just this little outburst..

Well, for one, moderators are people too. (Yes, even those who claim to be unicorns or lizards)
They can get fed up at a point
Should they be somewhat more diplomatic than can be expected from "normal" users ... I'd say so.

yes.. but he was arrived in that moment..

But at some point a clear statement might work, if all other messages have failed.
Well, that doesn't mean he was completely unaware of a situation
Or of your particular history

(of course.. he is the guy who banned me without saying :p)
sorry for the outburst

7:42 PM
No need to apologize to me at all. We're having a reasonable discussion I'd say

however I understand.. but I'm also human
Gilles is sometimes really harsh
I was upset at the beginning for his behaviour
everything started by its comment to one of my post

A thicker skin would help you a bit. I see Gilles every now and then, and we disagree every now and then. He can be pretty direct. But I never have the feeling he is trying to upset or hurt anyone. He's just very clear and to the point.

yes, I'm a bit too much sensitive (or sensible)
but my intent was to contribute
this time he banned me for 24 hours and I'm happy for that..
but if he banned me for 3 months?
for that chat?

Don't worry about things that haven't actually happened

ok

7:46 PM
Just take all the advice you've been given in the past to heart. And perhaps learn to move away a bit quicker if you feel a chat/discussion is not entirely working out as you had hoped.

thanks for your time

You're more than welcome.

@Bart yes.. but...
can I express freely?

Of course
I couldn't ban you, even if I wanted to. :p

eheh
@Revious Stop bothering people. NOW. This is your last warning.
=> sorry Gilles, I understand
or going immediately away
or staing in complete silence
is not similar to the reaction people have in front of really bad person?
I mean harmful person

7:49 PM
Well, think of it like this
You want to be able to keep participating
You absolutely don't want to escalate a situation

of course

That doesn't imply you need to stand idly by
Or that you should have people silence you into submission
However
At that point the smartest thing to do is to not escalate a situation
So you acknowledge you've understood (at most), and let that chat be that chat.
Now, if you don't understand why this happened, or if you feel that you are being terribly mistreated
you can always contact the team

I think that they are full of work and complaining people..
they need Gilles work and they will not go to contradict him for a so small lack of niceness..

I'm sure @AnnaLear could chime in on that a bit better than I could, but don't hesitate to contact them if you think there is a need. A fresh pair of eyes wouldn't hurt.

what's the meaning of chime?

7:54 PM
Sorry: "to chime in" means "to break into a conversation" or "to provide additional information" ... something like that.
Not sure if she's available though, but she used to be on the community team (or still is?)

really?
but you understand my feelings?
I mean.. am I totally wrong?

I don't know the entire history here, so I can't really comment on that. I can see how, on the face of it, you might interpret it as somewhat harsh.

thanks again

sure, no problem.

you were the one who readed dale carnagie?

7:58 PM
Most likely not no. You must be thinking of someone else.

I think I should learn better how to interact with people..
I rely a lot on some values like "fairness"
but people are not always fair and I should learn how to do the smartest thing not the "right" one (or the one which I believe a dirict of mine)..
@Bart: I always forget to start writing "@..."

good grief. @Revious: I am now going to kick you from this room. If you come back, you can talk about anything else except how unfair all the mods are being to you in your suspension. if you come back and start it up again, I'll chatban you.

And sometimes the smart move it to just stop talking. No "yes, but..." not "I understand, however ...". Just stop when the other party makes it clear they are not interested (any more)

@BenCollins that's not quite what he's talking about, although the pattern does seem to be repeating.

@AnnaLear indeed. kicked.

8:10 PM
.... well ....

I already warned him once.

@BenCollins ok, however I've already changed topic.. I was speaking of a completely different stuff...
@AnnaLear thanks for noting I was speaking of others. For sure I can't afford to repeat the pattern. As you see, I'm not doing.

Can someone check if I'm speaking rubbish here: meta.stackoverflow.com/questions/224432/…

Haven't checked, but probably

Ha, tnx @Bart

8:21 PM
Kidding aside, I don't have any clue about those tags, sorry.

@Bart you are doing a good work here
can I ask you how long have you been collaborating here?

@Bart Me neither but it feels like a version 1.0 becomes a synonym of version 2.0

Yeah, that's the rough idea I get as well. But I'm certain enough that's exactly the case @rene.
A bit more than 3 years on SO, a bit less on Meta @Revious

OK

Grr, that should have read "I'm not certain enough"

8:25 PM
Do you know which is the mean age here?

No idea.

@Bart: how old are you?

33

like me :D
have you seen 12 year slave?

nope

8:27 PM
it's a really good movie
I think it got an oscar

FYI, @Bart. I'm fairly certain @AnnaLear is a dev now. However, you could probably bug @GraceNote about Community Manager stuff in her place =)

Wow, you said the magic word and a @GraceNote appeared @jadarnel27 :)

@jadarnel27 That's correct, but I'm still around and can help out on most things. Not that I'm not trying hard to repress everything about moderation and talking to people... ;)

8:35 PM
as a dev should @AnnaLear
:)

@AnnaLear You seem like a very helpful person =) I was just letting Bart know, because I'm sure none of us wants to be "that guy" that keeps bugging you about Community Manager stuff despite your new role.
@GraceNote Sorry, I was using you as a stand-in for "some other Community Moderator that is often in this room" =)

So now I'm "that guy" @jadarnel27?
shakes fist

I'm not actually in this room that often, not directly at least. I am within earshot though.

Well...you were. You don't need to be anymore, though, @Bart.

Shog9 and Tim Post are probably you best bets for CMs who are regularly in here.

8:39 PM
I was aware of the situation though. Anna just happened to be around

@GraceNote Ah, I see. You were kind of a bad example then haha. But still, earshot is close enough.

Pouncing all over my rollbacks
All clarification aside though.... brown.

Congratulations, Microsoft.
You managed to forget that not all people have 'Segoe UI' installed on their system.

@AnnaLear So you, Shog9 and Tim are all working for SE company?

yes
and Grace Note as well

8:49 PM
So I've been arguing with half the company? :D
ops...

@Undo And now you blame microsoft? You choose to use an OS without that font...

@rene Well... they could have at least specified a fallback font :P

Comic Sans

@AnnaLear: you were hired as a developer in the last month?

@Revious Sort of. I've been working here since early 2012, but moved over to the dev team last month.

8:53 PM
I remember

every one was greeting with you

@Bart Brown indeed. I was just making sure you knew. You're more plugged-in than me, typically. So I figured you might already know =)

but I didn't understood exactly what had happened

@rene That's awesome. Horrible, but awesome
Still not going to fly with them though.
Well, not when going back home at least

8:55 PM
@AnnaLear I guess I had been really boring

9:06 PM
@rene Sure, sounds like a good idea. I'll work on it in a bit.

OK, if it doesn't take too much time @hichris123

It shouldn't; just another thing to scrap & to store & to display. Probably 20 lines of code max.

Ah, now I get Telkitty's username. She's just mining bitcoins imgur.com/gallery/WXP0e0g

9:36 PM

I was wondering if I could get a check on if I got serial down voted from the same user on SO. I got 5 down votes in a short window on SO on completely different questions.
anyone able to do that?

How should this be executed now: meta.stackoverflow.com/questions/224432/…

The system @Mike. In a couple of hours.

145
A: What can I do if I'm the victim of serial downvoting?

George StockerThat's serial downvoting. There are three ways to fix it: Do NOTHING. The daily vote anomaly script will pick it up and your rep will be recalculated automatically. If after 36 hours (give the script time to run) you still see a problem, then flag one of your posts and ask a moderator to look ...

@AnnaLear yeah, I read that some such post that mentioned I could ask here for a mod to see if they were all from the same user
ie if the script will find anything to pick up on

9:39 PM
A mod can't necessarily check that for you. They can make an educated guess, though. I'd just wait 24 hours first. If the script picks it up, you'll know. :)

Thanks, that will work, I'll just wait. so hard to. ;)

My Surface claims it can't detect its battery. It isn't plugged in to mains. It's still running.

I'm going to reboot and see if that fixes it. Back in a few minutes.

s/aliens/Windows/

10:02 PM
Reboot fixed it.

@michaelb958 So now it's not running? ;)

...

@Shog9 Thanks for the notification!

Q: Why does the Stack Overflow swag request form have six address lines?

UndoSome backstory: I ran in the Stack Overflow election, and lost. Poor me. The SE gods took pity upon me, though, and sent me a link to a form where I could give them an address and they would send me stuff. Like any sane human would, I wanted the swag. The form has six address fields: I'm in t...

10:27 PM
@Undo I filled them in as Anystreet 123 \n zip town \n province \n country
That's 4 lines already
I don't know what "second street" is supposed to be, but that might've been a fifth

Yeah, but it's still a rather large jump from four to six.

@JeroenVannevel: c/o if you want it shipped to your company address for example
> [Firstname] [Lastname]
c/o [Company] Building 123/4-567
1234 [City]
[Country]

Why not just enter your company address as the first line then? Or is it some sort of fallback in case you're not home?

1 hour later…
11:42 PM
@Shog9 Shog, love the stats, but there seems to be a glaring omission from them. The queue was around 120k prior to this current spurt of activity. We were able to clear 15.4k tasks with 34.2k reviews. In the meantime, 4,862 new tasks entered the queue, presumably requiring more reviews to clear them (since they have fewer existing votes) than we performed since we started. Did we actually make progress in the big-picture sense?
(this isn't to say that if we don't lower the absolute number reviewing has no value, but the general complaint was that the queue size was constantly increasing -- if this had an impact, I think that should be clear, if not, you may want to leave it ambiguous as-is)

@rene You around?
