It's kind of small, and easy to overlook on a large screen. Also confusing that you have Ask as a name for QA section of the site, and Ask as the action button for asking a new question. Maybe "New Question"?

user259867
With position, it's hard to know because we don't see the rest of the page. Presumably there'll be other stuff there competing for attention.

@CareBear It's a hot questions list.
@CareBear New question sounds good.

user259867
I think the position is not a problem if the text sticks out more on the page. Maybe not as much as on skeptics but something with more contrast than dark gray on light gray.

Or look for equilibrium with Translation Party

The focus on Japanese SO right now is finishing and fixing the translations, and getting an initial community of enthused people in there (while still in private) to test everything thoroughly while asking and answering some questions. We'll polish up everything else (including a stub Area 51 proposal just so everything works) when we're much closer to actually opening it up, which will be sometime near the end of this year. Our primary goal right now is to continue to fix a bunch of the translations. — Tim Post ♦ Oct 7 at 13:37

user259867
sometime near the end of this year does not sound like October 28. Perhaps October 28 is the beginning of a prolonged private beta.

@CareBear This is what the meta question said (via Google Translate):
> Consider that from October 28, to fix the terminology, and invite more users, it is in the public beta. And before the public beta, because it is good if you have any questions of about 100 at least, please post in the Japanese if there is a good question!

TheLQI think it would really help if you get notified that a question of yours was closed. Especially for the multi-site power user, usually (at least for me) a question is asked and then left alone for while. I rely on the network-wide inbox to tell me when someone has commented or answered, but if ...

Google /ɡuːɡ(ə)l/ is an American multinational corporation specializing in Internet-related services and products. These include online advertising technologies, search, cloud computing, and software. Most of its profits are derived from AdWords. Together they own about 14 percent of its shares but control 56 of the stockholder voting power through supervoting stock. They incorporated Google as a privately held company on September 4, 1998. 44/50 points for my essay. 1/5 for MLA guidelines?! WTH? It isn't like I did it in comic sans! WTH are MLA guidelines anyway?

"MLA format" redirects here. For other uses, see The MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers or Modern Language Association. The MLA Style Manual and Guide to Scholarly Publishing (2008) is the third edition of The MLA Style Manual, first published by the Modern Language Association of America in 1985. It is an academic style guide widely used in the United States, Canada, and other countries, providing guidelines for writing and documentation of research in the humanities, especially in English studies; the study of other modern languages and literatures, including comparative literature;...

There's a manual?!

Times New Roman, 12 pt font

I goggled it of course, and sources are conflicting. There isn't a simple list of things anywhere, it seems.
@hichris123 Did that.
I did 1-inch margins too. (ugly!)

@bjb568 Double-spaced?

yeah ^

@AstroCB I made it 1.5 spaced because it looked close enough and if I made it double spaced it would be "too long" on some word processors (points are taken off for > 2pages)

The thingy in the corner is optional; I only see it sometimes.

@AstroCB I thot that was a joke. Looks like an old person puked on it.

2:35 AM
Adjective: concise (comparative more concise, superlative most concise)
  1. brief, yet including all important information
  2. concise

Yes… I know what that means.
I would have gotten a 94% (can't believe I can't do mathys) if it hadn't been for those stupid rules which I followed mostly anyway…

My point is: length requirements are for a reason. They're to force you to write concisely.

@hichris123 My paper, concisely: "There are no objects that are actually important to me"

@bjb568 Now grade yourself on the AP scale
@bjb568 ... what was the essay topic?

@hichris123 Object of memory

2:38 AM
@bjb568 meaning what?

@AstroCB Eww. That's the format we have to write our outlines in for Speech class. It just doesn't feel like LaTeX when you take all the pretty away from it... :/

@hichris123 IDK
@hichris123 Isn't that for writing about literature stuffs?

(no, they didn't tell us to use LaTeX. They suggested Microsoft Word, but obviously I don't have Microsoft Word, nor to I want to. :P)

@bjb568 This essay is a personal narrative centered on an object of memory. The object should be anything in your life that has significant meaning or personal importance. The essay will discuss the importance of the object from a first person point of view perspective. The focus of the article is not on the object itself; rather, the focus should be on the memories the object has created for you. You must convey the significance of the object with personal details.

@bjb568 Yeah, kinda, but were you insigtful?
@bjb568 So you lied.

@Undo :0 how do you live without computer?

2:41 AM
@hichris123 Well, it's confusing. Wut am I writing about given that I don't care about objects?

@Doorknob ... you use LaTeX?

@hichris123 Who doesn't?

@hichris123 Of course. It's great.

@hichris123 Mediumishly.

@bjb568 ... wait, so you ask someone how they live without a computer, but yet you "don't care" about computers?
@bjb568 me.

2:42 AM
@hichris123 :O

@Doorknob It's work. More work than a WYSIWYG editor.

@hichris123 Less work if you know how to use it.

@hichris123 I care about computers. I don't care about a specific one.

And makes prettier output.

Me likey.

2:42 AM
(Except when brutally forced to conform to ridiculously dated-looking "style")

lack of style

@bjb568 Oh, so what would happen if I smashed your computer into a billion pieces? What would you say, act, do?

@bjb568 Hence the scare quotes. :P

@Doorknob Style == something that I can bear to look at and not puke. The heading is annoying, but the rest works.
@Doorknob eh. I dunno.

@hichris123 Ugh, that computer cost money. Money has value because people value it. So it bad. But I don't care about the computer, I care about the money. If you repaid with money (assuming no inconvenience of delays and whatnot), I wouldn't care the slightest provided the mess is cleaned up by notme.
@Doorknob Quotes are scary. Yes.

2:45 AM
@bjb568 So money isn't an object? Nor is the data on the hard drive? The memories you stored inside that computer are gone. That's not a personal object, the objects themselves?

@hichris123 I just find it really nice because a.) Don't have to use the mouse ever at all (and also not have to memorize keyboard shortcuts instead), b.) Have every single thing laid out right in front of me instead of buried in some menu, so I know exactly what settings I'm using and I don't have to worry about whether maybe that line is 2 pixels off but I don't know because it's stuck under a menu I've never used and gahhhh (can you tell this has happened before?), and (cont.)

@hichris123 Can't describe the experiences with money, not much to say to prove its worth. No, I have backups. What's not a personal object?

c.) It's faster and easier and more efficient to use if you're a power user (and you can do more stuff and get better results, with less effort).

> The object should be anything in your life that has significant meaning or personal importance.
Isn't that something you could have answered it with? Money?
Data?
Anything?

2:47 AM
@Doorknob Okay, agreed, but 99.99% of the time, you never need all of those features.

@hichris123 Data has meaning, fine, but… is that what it's looking for? Nothing has personal importance for me.

[ SmokeDetector ] All-caps title: STPM CHAPTER 6 DIFFERENTIAL EQUATION on math.stackexchange.com

@Doorknob I know what they are… They're scary.

@bjb568 So you wouldn't care if you lost all of that data? You wouldn't care if you lost your home, your family... anything?
A person is an object.

@hichris123 So you don't have to use them. But they're there when you need them and that's really convenient. (Also that's not the point; the point is that if I don't want those settings I can be sure that no weirdness is happening with my document. I have total control.)

2:49 AM
@hichris123 I would care if I lost my data, but teachers don't have a clue about data so it would be risky. No, I don't care about specific house or people.
@hichris123 I'll reach that maturity level! Sometime!

Oh, there goes my branch :(

Does it hurt?

@bjb568 "teachers don't have a clue" - maybe, but it's insight. You don't care about your parents? You don't care about brothers or sisters? You don't care about the food you eat?

@bjb568 Of course not. No nerves :D

2:51 AM
@hichris123 Well, not really. I care about the monitory worth and services provided, but not about them/it.
@Frank :D

How's y'all?

@bjb Aren't those objects, though?

@hichris123 Not of significant memory of importance.

@bjb Then what do you care about?

Abstract concepts.
(non-objects)

3:00 AM
... like what?

Internets, javascript, xkcd.
SE, moderation, github.

Then hasn't a computer created these concepts for you?

Not a specific one.

@bjb568 What a (not) life!

Haven't the developers of these platforms created these concepts for you?
Hasn't electricity created these concepts for you?

3:03 AM
"An object that is very important to my life is Randall Munroe…" Teacher: "Wat? BOOOOOO"

Something is an object which creates memories in your life.

Mah brain?
Huh, I could actually write about that.

@bjb Who cares if they don't know what or who it is; it's how you explain it. I can probably write a brilliant essay on how atoms in stars relate to Caesar...
It's the idea or concept that counts.

But it has to be on-topic. If I have to take up 3 out of the 2 pages explaining the object, there's no room left for the memories of it and why it's important.

Then don't explain

3:06 AM
That's dangerous.

Telling why it's important should be the explanation.
Because what or who it is makes it important.

Anyway, GTG, essays complicated. ENGLISH SHOULD DIE!
