Is this the right place to ask about interpretation of "is this a low quality post or not"?

@GreenAsJade ... maybe? Go ahead and ask.

So this question: stackoverflow.com/questions/26331517/… is a blatant homework question. It's in the LQP queue. It's not pretending not to be a homework question. I can't tell, from reading the guidelines and even from my experience here, whether this is "acceptable" or not. In it's favour, it's perfectly clear and honest about what it is asking. Against it, it is a homework question. Thoughts?

I thought it was off-topic or too broad, as that guy needs a whole book on modulo, not a short answer.

gah, @animuson.

I see - yes, I can understand an interpretation that this is 'too broad'.

@GreenAsJade There's nothing inherently wrong with it because it's a homework question, but we require some level of research here, and that question shows none.

That makes sense too. So - is a question that shows no research "very low quality and should be deleted" or just "not a good question and should be downvoted"?

I'm a reasonably savvy searcher. I used to find MP3 files back in the day by searching for the song title, plus MP3, plus "last modified"
And Google would index directory listings of HTTP servers that were serving out file directories. It turned out "last modified" is one of those uncommon phrases that really only came up in that context.
Anyway, so I like to read and gather data. "better than X" is a nice phrase if you are looking for ideas on what might be better than something you are considering.
And a fairly good metric of the health and goodwill toward something is "X sucks"
If I were a trend grapher, I would say the "StackOverflow sucks" meme is now becoming pretty intense. Like, I'd buy stock in "StackOverflow sucks"
So... is there anyone who cares?
Like, is there a PR department? Is there anyone in charge?
I wonder about Jeff quitting. Reminds me of LiveJournal and Brad Fitzgerald. "Thanks for the money, hello Russian mafia!" True story.

3:35 AM
@HostileFork Well, as long as they're talking about StackOverflow and not Stack Overflow, I think we're fine. ;p

Hey folk. I just want to get calibrated on low quality posts, 'cause I just failed an audit for the first time (having passed many). I don't see what's wrong with this post that I marked as "Looks OK" It answers the question, before going on to supply linkds as reference.... stackoverflow.com/review/first-posts/5981360
The answer is "This will be used in the Serialized class". That is the answer to the question.
I think I need to hear why "no, man, that post is really bad, because... "
Hmmm - looks like all the denziens of the Tavern are asleep, darn it!

The other answers are far better, at the very least

Yes, but that in itself doesn't make this a "bad answer, action should have been taken", though, does it?
What exactly should that new user have been told?
1) He answered the question. 2) He provided reference material to backup his answer.

huh... it wasn't even flagged as spam. I don't think that just anything deleted as VLQ should become an audit
other reviewers apparently considered it a link-only answer, though

I got told (in the audit fail message) that this was a "very low quality answer".

3:40 AM
well...

IMHO, I think other reviewers just saw the links and didn't really pay attention to what the answer was :(

it is bad

But - I'm here to be calibrated. What exactly is bad about it?

It is bad. It doesn't add any new information compared to other answers

AIUI that doesn't make an answer bad. I recall reading, in meta. that answers are supposed to be judged on their own merit

3:42 AM
The question is "what is SVID?". The answer is "It's used by serialisation. See here for more: [link]". SerialVersionID is used by serialisation - you don't tell? Who would have thought?

"Does this answer the question? In any way? " ... yes it does.

And the rest is just a link

Hmm - I thought the question is "why is it important" and the answer is "it is important because it is used by serialisation"

@GreenAsJade only if you count "serial version relates to serialisation" as an answer.

Anyhow, thanks for the feedback. I take away from this that I need to recalibrate slightly in teh direction of not being lenient.

3:44 AM
@GreenAsJade that's only one third of the question
"why is it important to use different tires in winter than in summer?". "Because the tire behavior depends on weather." "umm.. thanks, but you haven't answered my question"
Still, I don't think it's a good audit

@JanDvorak :)
No big deal - just good to double check upon failure eh :)

when I see a question with 15 answers, and someone add another that sort, I check if another answers haven't said the same

@GreenAsJade ok... that "serialisation and deserialisation [requires] the same serialVersionID" part can be considered somewhat answer-y, as long as you understand "can be done using **" as "requires" (can be fixed by editing, which succeeds the audit). BUT it's still a crappy answer reiterating the previous 15 and deserves at least a comment (which succeeds the audit) and likely a downvote (which reveals it is an audit).
