Hm. Have chat flags always been shown to the 10k users in the room, or is that new?

@axrwkr LSMFT, BABY!

@Seth Always
Well, really it's shown to 10k users everywhere, although I think not everyone sees all flags at once or something. But in either case they're usually handled pretty fast.

Hello. I would like to know, if someone proposes a site in area54, and the site gets enough commits to go online. Does the proposer get any type of privileges? Like, becoming a mod or something similar?

3:16 PM
@phpNoOBఠ_ఠ no
@TimStone Hm. OK.

1 hour later…
4:32 PM
@Seth Really?? Call me a drama queen, but I think that is really unfair.

@phpNoOBఠ_ఠ Proposing a site, and getting people to sign up, doesn't necessarily indicate that you're suitable for moderating/fostering-growth-of an actual living community. Beta moderators are appointed a week or two into the private beta, once there's been a bit of time users to demonstrate participation and community leadership ability.

It is common for the person who proposes a site to become a beta moderator -- they have the motivation to the site grow and may demonstrate this quickly once the site the site is active. But they're not made a moderator solely because they proposed the site.

This is slightly similar to the story of Stack Exchange 1.0, where there were lots of people who would pay to create a site and get administrator powers, but not be well-suited to that role.

@Shog9 I just had another unupvote event that didn't trigger a recalc. Take a look at my current (visible rep) and compare it with my audit page. There's a discrepancy of 10. This is the usual case for me - I see this bug happen about once or twice a month.

1 hour later…
6:36 PM
@Mysticial Well, you didn't get a recalc 'cause you hadn't rep-capped yet... Not that it matters, since the guy who retracted the vote gave it right back again.

Yeah. I actually gained +10 from this particular unupvote + reupvote event. Small bug anyways. Probably not worth fixing?

6:53 PM
@Mysticial heh... So yeah, this is the same thing we talked about the other day; since you were rep-capped on the day you received the retracted vote, it shouldn't have actually cost you anything. When it was retracted and restored today, you got a legit +10 because you're not (yet) rep-capped today.

Yep. I was kinda waiting for it happen again before pinging you. I had at least 2 other unupvote events since then, but those votes were on days where I didn't cap.

@Mysticial Well, you had one yesterday that was calculated correctly - probably because the vote was originally cast after you hit the cap (so gave you nothing) vs. one that contributed to a cap followed by others that did not.

ah

A: Stack Overflow Essential Problems: SO is not a forum

Shog9You're painting with a really broad brush here, and implicitly insulting a lot of folks along the way - folks who do try to explain things, write generally-useful answers and even occasionally put the time in to edit the questions they're answering into a form that others can find... That said, ...

> the worst...

I see how it is, @Shog9. goes off to sulk in the corner :P

@phpNoOBఠ_ఠ I don't see how it is unfair... proposing a site (AFAIK) is just as easy as asking a question. Moderators must prove that they are good users.

8:14 PM
@Seth If the site turns out to be very useful, then I am sure some privileges should be given at-least. Let's see it this way: judging by your reasoning if a question is asked and is beneficial for the community OP's are rewarded with reps/badges. The same way, If the proposal should get commits( qualifying for a good suggestion that is) the person proposing should as well have some privileges.
seems interesting question for some discussion. I would ask it here on meta, if I was not afraid of being watered down with downvotes.

You're overlooking things
You get a badge on A51 for launching a site
You get a badge in the area where getting badges should be concerned. When that means proposing sites, you get a badge on the site where proposals are made.
When that means operating on a site, you get rewards on that site
I don't get a reward on Meta just because I'm a ♦ on another site.

What is the badge given for launching a site? Never heard of it

I'm about to do a very stunning thing and go investigate your participation in Area51
I predict before I arrive that you will have less than 200 rep on A51

Arrghhh! worse than I thought.
A gold badge in area51 is worthless imo

Not only do you have less than 200 rep on A51, you have zero active participation there.
So basically, what I'm seeing here is:
You're criticizing a process you're not participating in
You're not justly basing your rationales for "this sucks"
You've absolutely no idea about separation of concerns (you're a programmer, you should understand how things get segregated by logical concern)
You're looking for a reward for no effort

8:24 PM
I had actually an idea, but wanted to know, if I will give a good idea and not be a part of it, proprietary that is..

You've got the word noob in your name in leetspeak, which is terrible practice for a professional programmer on a professional site
proprietary?
wtf are you trying to do with an open community that's proprietary?
First and foremost the SE network is about community

wow slow down there tiger! You are going crazy on me.

I have yet to hit the rate limiter, I'm not going fast

Was there ever a question suggesting to drop the colors of lower score answers in Meta?

@BenjaminGruenbaum not on posts afaik, only on comments, but I forget.

8:26 PM
Meta search sucks :(
I think it's a solid question

meta itself sucks!

@phpNoOBఠ_ఠ I disagree.

@BenjaminGruenbaum your opinion is well noted sir.

@BenjaminGruenbaum you're arguing with a non-professional disinterested developer who wants what he does not earn. I would not waste too much time on an argument

@jcolebrand I know who he is from the PHP room in the SO chat

8:28 PM
I base those assertions on the research he has displayed in bashing the system.

@jcolebrand You are a treat to my eyes.
If anyone has a hard-on for altercations, SO may not be the best choice. But, that is just my opinion.

Am I the only one confused where that last sentiment came from?

You suggest arousal for picking fights on a site that is not this site, and state that it is your opinion. That was in no way related to a previous comment or discussion.

@jcolebrand I like you
May I ask you a programming question? related to Node.js?
I'm a node.js fan

8:38 PM
sure
there is a node.js room tho

 Node.js

Because you rock when you don't block

@jcolebrand Most node.js discussion happens in the much more active JavaScript room where we have a bunch of people using node. Just for the protocol.

@BenjaminGruenbaum that's a shame ;-)

Why?

Q: Should we drop the coloring of opinions in Meta?

Benjamin GruenbaumCurrently, like in Stack Overflow when an answer in meta gets a lot of downvotes it gets greyed out. This makes answers harder to read. While the motivation for this is clear in Stack Overflow I'm not sure what purpose of it in Meta is, since upvotes and downvotes do no represent effort and u...

Here, I asked

8:51 PM
@jcolebrand I am just a fan. That, means I never laid my hands on it before. But, I am trying to.
But there are some concepts I don't yet understand
I downloaded a tut and the first thing they said was that, " node is a javascript without a browser " I mean, how is that?
And, if Node is both server and javascript at the same time, does it mean
Apache is no longer needed?

@phpNoOBఠ_ఠ nodejs is a severside JavaScript platform built on Google's V8. Imagine PHP but without the SAPI. You don't need apache for node or any other external server (although nginx is often used to serve static files).
@phpNoOBఠ_ఠ I've asked a question about starting with node, coming from PHP you should read the answers.
@jcolebrand Can't I add a bounty to a question that already has an active bounty to increase it?

9:09 PM
@random Thanks for all the help! :)
