@Shog9: Why don't the newly elected moderators have diamond on Meta?

12:34 AM
@animuson Hah. I just asked him the same thing elsewhere. Great observant minds and all that.

A: Why "Laws & Legal Questions" was closed

Evan CarrollWhat a bunch of pretentious nonsense. How about just socially suggesting to users that they upvote answers that have citations? Or, that we grant users the ability to close answers that aren't properly cited?

I didn't know Evan trolled on sites other than Meta.

@animuson Oh yeah. He had a bit on Gaming a month ago or so. Super User too, I think.

Q: Merge Beer and Wine, include Spirits/Liquor?

shrugs Cartaino is pretty much the primary Area 51 moderator. At least he's the only one I ever see take action on anything.

are there A51-specific mods or is it only employees?

Just employees I believe.

Time to make up at least a week's worth of work before I go into the office in...6 hours. Totally reasonable time management on my part.

If only you had an assistant to manage your time for you.

I know, right?

I don't know the correct place to ask this...but I am trying to obtain ip addresses of some stackexchange websites so that my company can allow them through the firewall...like sharepoint.stackexchange.com, ux.stackexchange.com, pm.stackexchange.com, and, programmers.stackexchange.com

They should all resolve to 64.34.119.12

Ha, I knew Tim would have the answer! ^_^ Was just waiting for it...

for some reason only stackoverflow.com is going through...but the other sites are blocked...

Q: can we learn ethical hacking from SO

pbvamsiFor a newbie like me to programming, I found no other site valuable and live other than SO for acquiring skills, so i just wanna ask, can we, if not any thoughts. I understand the value of ethical hacking and for the same reason I want to learn it. I know that the philosophy of SO is to quest...

@pbvamsi considering those questions are off-topic for Stack Overflow I'd say no. And.. really? Ethical hacking :\

@pbvamsi I'm... not sure what that has to do with SO elections. Can you clarify?

2
A: can we learn ethical hacking from SO

DavidWhat you can't do: Learn ethical hacking (too broad and vague) Learn about ethics (off-topic) Learn about hacking (too broad, probably controversial) What you can do: Ask questions about code you're using in your study of ethical hacking If the question likely presents a controversial subje...

this answer mirrors my thoughts precisely.
and oh hey the author @David is here too

10:58 AM
Oh, did you mean that "SO elections" was the "nice show"? That makes more sense to me now. Had to run it through my parser a few times to read it :)

@David continuation of his previous sentence..
I see you ninja'd me there again.

I'm a little concerned that some of the "usual suspects" on MSO and here in the Tavern are so active. When I was in Boston, they were online during the day. Now I'm in Manila, and they're online during the day...

I've rejected a couple of edits on MSO, and they don't appear on my reviews list or the user's suggestions list. An edit I approved after that appears on my reviews list, so this doesn't seem to be caching. Any ideas what's going on?
@Lix Thought about that for a second before posting the answer ;)

@jadarnel - m.facebook.com/…

What is that? Facebook?
Oh. It's a weird link to your blog.

1 hour later…
1:26 PM
@jadarnel27 no, it's a facebook tracking link to his blog, so that facebook gets more data about your surfing habits, and Moshe still doesn't gain valuable insights into his own blog.
I'm also going to save you the trouble based on his last blog, he's getting quite proficient at telling everything he did in the day, and yet managing to miss the concept of recaps. So if you want to read a diary of Moshe (what this is so far) then it's a delightful read.
@Moshe I'm still confused why you had to ask for directions to Moscone. Don't you carry at least 3 iDevices with you at all times?

1:41 PM
@jcolebrand Ah, thanks for clearing that up. That sounds...less than ideal.

Well to be fair, he could be running google analytics on the blog, but then it would just say everyone came from Facebook

Which wouldn't be incredibly helpful. He's got links to his blog on his personal website, and on his profile here. So I'm sure it'd be nice to see where most of the traffic comes from.

2:40 PM
For some reason I thought room owners could clear stars. Is that not true?

They can

Ah. That would explain why I think that, then.

@jcolebrand I read it as the story of a lone Apple water bottle's brave sacrifice.

@jadarnel27 I can

@jcolebrand Wowsers. Yeah, Mrozek cleared up the confusion. I just got thrown off my this meta post.
Second-guessed myself and whatnot.

2:48 PM
That should look like a completely new star list now
Enjoy

Well done.
@mootinator "Molecular perfection: Literally twice as many hydrogen atoms as there are oxygen atoms" - That is hilarious.

*sigh*

Hi all
@jadarnel27 :-P
I did not know what else to write

3:52 PM
Apparently I'm not good at meetings.

@mootinator hmmm?

"Anything from you?" (moot talks about his "side" task for a few seconds).
"Err, that's not really a huge priority right now."
"Right, but we've been rehashing all the huge priorities over and over again for the last hour. I have nothing to add to that."

That's what they get for inviting software developers to meetings.

Lol, indeed.
I guess I'm just supposed to say "I'm working with X, Y, and Z to get all those super important things done, and clicking refresh on my inbox when I'm waiting for a response, because it would be a waste of my time to work on something less then desperately urgent."
No, that probably has too much sarcasm in it.

4:00 PM
"Hey, can I just come to the meetings where everyone's fully prepared beforehand, and we just talk about the practical problems that actual relate to what I'm supposed to be doing?"
@mootinator Perhaps =)

@jadarnel27 That's a good way of getting out of all meetings.

Someone should fix the castle.

@mootinator That's what I was thinking.

"How confident are you this untested fix will solve the problem in the environment you don't have access to?" "Err, not..."
eep

@AakashM Haha, that's quite a threat.
I can't re-star your apple water @mootinator =(

Those fascists.
That's it, I'm going on posting funny images to MSO tavern strike.

Who can help me? I can't access any of the Stack Exchange sites

@jadarnel27 I'm polling their meta user page every minute but still nothing ><

4:19 PM
Anyone? :(

summons a network psychic.
@Truth What do you mean, specifically? Do you get an error message?

I am a network psychic

@mootinator No, it's just connecting forever and exits with a default chrome error

your network is lonely, and wants a hug.
@Truth and yet you're here...

@jcolebrand I already tried it :(
@jcolebrand Chat works for some reason, as do all other sites on the internet

4:23 PM
Have you tried turning stack exchange off and then on again?

But Stack Overflow Meta Stack Overflow Programmers [serverfault] all don't work
@mootinator Let me try that one ;)

@mootinator be nice :p
There is a network diagnostics page, trying to locate

Maybe you have one of those evil hosts file rewriting viruses specifically designed to annoy developers.

@balpha network login diagnostics?

@mootinator I hope not!

4:25 PM
tracert stackoverflow.com

@balpha How do I use it? cmd?

yep

Timed out each time
Ping is the same
@balpha

That sounds like it's a problem on your end, though. And twitter confirms this by not going crazy with OMG SO DOWN messages :)

@balpha Probably, any ideas on what can I try?
I would have asked on superuser, but...
Okay, so changing a wireless network solved the problem
The newer problem is that I'm now surfing on my mobile's data package

4:29 PM
@balpha that's funny, we're just discussing twitter issues on our end, so .. uh ...
India, LA, and MD (I think Tim is in MD)

Try resetting your other wireless router, those are notoriously unreliable :P

@mootinator I think now you're just being silly

@mootinator Tried it, didn't work :(

@jcolebrand delaware, but close

It's true, I can see Maryland from my house.

4:31 PM
@balpha what's the difference?

@jcolebrand About 6% sales tax

Maryland is a stop on the interstate. Delaware is its snack shop.

@jcolebrand When is @mootinator not being silly?

@jadarnel27 3pm on Teusday. Not sure which Teusday tho.

Huh, wow

4:36 PM
Got it to work (not sure how though)
Thanks for your help @balpha @mootinator @jcolebrand

sure why not

Listening to music on bluetooth headphones sort of blows my mind when I think about it.

receiving electrically transcoded audio waves,
which have been compressed by at least one mathematical process,
had tons of data shed off the original sound wave curvatures,
been transmitted over at least three different transmission media,
and by at least two different types of processor,
to finally be delivered to your ears with at most 60% of the original information,
and over short range non-cable transmission,
using yet another form of compression this time with encryption,
all to reproduce what to you, sounds exactly like someone playing in the room next to you? Yep, blows my mind too.

That is fantastic.

5:18 PM
This, however, is horrible and WRONG:

5:44 PM
I like how Robert Harvey posted one of those Calvin and Hobbes comics on this off topic MSO post, but didn't close it with his mod vote.

That's "awesome".
Oh no, I broke the markdown.

At the risk of sounding like s spoil-sport, I'm very much not a fan of this new trend of doing that on off topic Meta posts.
And I definitely don't think there should be a Stack App for making it easier to do.

There's a stack app for that? >.>
I concur, that's not right, that's not what meta is for
Can you link me to the stack app?

Q: Transmogrify offtopic MSO posts

Manishearth See http://meta.stackoverflow.com/a/134710/178438 Oftentimes, MSO is cluttered with offtopic programming questions asked by those who want to circumvent a question ban. These posts are eyesores, and this script is an attempt to improve them for the duration of their short lifespans. It auto...

autocloses?
but RobertHarvey didn't close?

5:54 PM
I know people like to goof off some on Meta, but that's explicitly encouraging making pointless noise. And it comes across as kind of insulting to the OP.
2
@jcolebrand He might not be using the user script, I don't know.

@Arjan: I've gotten one response from a cartoon. It was: "Ah, yeah, you're right, posted in the wrong place. Sorry about that." Most of these folks are question-banned on SO; they know very well what they are doing. They want us to migrate their off-topic question to Stack Overflow. — Robert Harvey Jun 18 at 14:48
I'm going to allow it.

Is the subject of this Meta question worth putting a bounty on?
1
Q: With rapid technological change, some answers might have become obsolete

OptimightCan I ask the same question which was asked 3 years back? - Answers surely going to be different as technology has changed. This a question in question: Is there a modeling language for the functional programming paradigm?

@jcolebrand Still. It also breaks the general rule of assuming, unless you know otherwise, that people are being sincere and not malicious.

I'm considering sponsoring one, but I know nothing about the field and I have a feeling not much will have changed in 3 years.

But I guess I'm probably in the minority on this topic =)

5:58 PM
@DiscountGucciHandbags are you wanting to sponsor the meta Q or the underlying Q?
Here's the thing: that topic is a shopping list Q, which are disavowed

@jcolebrand the underlying one

@DiscountGucciHandbags bounty itup

@jcolebrand mmmyeaah, but it's a really, really small shopping list. :)
@jcolebrand yeah, I think I'll just start one.

@DiscountGucciHandbags I meant the meta topic, btw

@jcolebrand ah, ok
The original Q is not great, either
But I guess it fulfills some function, seeing as it has good answers.

6:03 PM
The answers don't, in my opinion, do justice to the asker

@jcolebrand right, interesting.
Maybe something new will come up

I edited a bit more to refine

That Calvin and Hobbes thing elicited a rude comment from the OP before it was finally deleted. That's what I'm talking about. It's negative and it only has the potential to lead to more negativity.

@jadarnel27 did you see the comment I posted on it?

@Flexo I did, and I agree.
26 mins ago, by jadarnel27
At the risk of sounding like s spoil-sport, I'm very much not a fan of this new trend of doing that on off topic Meta posts.
"doing that" being posting silly comics as answers.

6:18 PM
took me a long time to twig what that final comment even meant on that latest one

Yeah. Giving the unicode middle finger to Bart and Robert Harvey.

the other odd thing is that guy seemed to have an older duplicate of that question in the right place and has only had the account for a day

Hmmm. See, they could very well just be confused about how the site / system works.
Which is their fault, but that's not a good reason for high rep users / people who do understand to respond that way.

@BoltClock'saUnicorn why do you think my question is off-topic? meta.stackoverflow.com/questions/137118/… It's about third party service involved with SE,stuff like that has been considered OK for example here: meta.stackoverflow.com/questions/132384/…

In your example, the OpenID control is actually on the Stack Exchange network, so Stack Exchange has control over it. They don't have any control over OpenSTV though, so any complaints against that software have to be directed to the creator; nothing can be done from the Stack Exchange perspective (making it off-topic).

6:35 PM
@TimStone it is Open source though so presumably they could run a local fork
not sure it's worth the hassle though

@Flexo I believe that the licensing agreement is that they're only allowed to distribute the binary that they received at the time of the agreement.
Since OpenSTV is a very...special...kind of open source.

yeah non-free (in the DFSG sense), but still open

Aye

@gnat What Tim Stone said

7:13 PM
Mwuahahah, an awesome flag.

7:36 PM
@BoltClocksaUnicorn @TimStone "nothing can be done from the Stack Exchange perspective" is not true. OpenSTV claim to accept feedback, I provided references in question - ie SE can pass them a bug report / feature request if (note: if) deemed necessary
is nothing can be done the only reason why it's considered off-topic?

It's your feedback though
If you want to give OpenSTV that feedback then you can do so. It's not Stack Exchange's place to act as a proxy for that.

7:54 PM
Put it this way: the login system is a product of Stack Exchange (the devs implement an OpenID-based login system and it's up to them to decide how and which providers). OpenSTV is not a product of Stack Exchange, even though it's open source. We just happen to use it for calculating ballots.
Would you report a bug in WordPress to MSO because Stack Exchange uses WordPress for its blogs?
@animuson I handled that flag :)

I noticed. :) I was reluctant to actually submit it like that out of fear the moderator wouldn't actually look at the question and just dismiss it as a joke.
@BoltClock: You also spawned this question: meta.stackoverflow.com/questions/137165/…

Oh, that.
That's my fault
That's definitely my fault, not the system's
@animuson I answered.

8:10 PM
@BoltClock: It's amazing how many people don't know the new HTML5 rules about anchors. :( stackoverflow.com/questions/11145861/…

That question is a duplicate

I'm trying to find it...
I'm probably searching for the wrong thing >_>

@BoltClocksaUnicorn Hmm, do you know what might have happened on this question that would have caused all of the answers to be "undeleted"?

@animuson I can only find one I answered. It's crazy how these all ask about the h2 tag specifically, and not any others
0
Q: Semantically, which is more correct: a in h2, or h2 in a?

Sergio TapiaI'm stuck deciding which to use as both seem to work. Should I be placing links <a> inside of <h2> elements? Or the other way around? What is the correct standard?

Mwuahahaha, I found one.
That is a terrible title...

8:13 PM
Your duplicate sucks, it asks about h1, not h2

Psh, same thing, different number.

@TimStone It looks like they were all undeleted manually. If you look at /posts/#/revisions for each answer, you'll see "Post Undeleted by casperOne"

Yeah, but I'm trying to figure out what would have caused them to be deleted in the first place.

Oh
The question was migrated, then the migration got rejected
That might have something to do with it, but I don't really know what exactly happens to answers when it comes to migrations

Ah, I had a suspicion that might be it.

8:17 PM
@TimStone It's not Stack Exchange's place to act why? In case if SE community decides it's in their interest to feedback, what would stop SE from giving it. @BoltClocksaUnicorn What you say makes no sense to me sorry. anyone, SE included, can pass a feedback about any software product / service they use - as long as there's a channel provided for that. You seem to jump to conclusion that providing feedback = requiring someone to do change, this is not so.
whether to OpenSTV or Wordpress or whatever - as long as there's invitation "send us feedback" it's OK to do, simple as that

@jadarnel27 What did I miss? A unicode middle finger in my direction? I guess there's a first for everything...

Nothing would stop them, it just doesn't make any sense for them to field feedback for OpenSTV when it's not something that they have control over.

@TimStone SE has control on sending feedback to established channel that's it, simple really. SE may not have control on whether this feedback will be taken into account, so what?

@Bart Haha, precisely. On the off-topic post where you made a joke about the column name DEPARTMAN =)

@gnat I's not OK to do, simple as that

8:22 PM
Ah, haha, okay. That just amused me. So that was taken the wrong way I guess. Ah well :)

Sorry, but I cannot explain it to you any further if what I said doesn't make sense
Oh, I know: read the faq

@BoltClocksaUnicorn I've read the faq before posting and re-read it now. My question is about SO/SE, matches first line.

Your question is about OpenSTV
Not Stack Overflow, not Stack Exchange

@gnat Stack Exchange does not solicit feedback about software that it just so happens to use when that feedback has nothing to do with Stack Exchange's use of that software. Your feedback has nothing to do with Stack Exchange, it's solely about OpenSTV. The fact that Stack Exchange just so happens to use OpenSTV is largely tangential to the issue.

@Bart I think they felt a little attacked by the combination of your joke with the sarcastic, comic strip answer (and the comments underneath it). That's just a guess, though.
Your comment, by itself, would have been fine =) (I thought it was pretty funny, myself)

8:27 PM
@jadarnel27 Yeah, that might have been. Just some harmless fun (at least that's how I meant it) but given the circumstances probably misinterpreted. Ah well, if that is the most offence I've caused here, I think I'll survive. ;)

Oh and

Q: Can't log in using WordPress.com OpenID

BoltClock's a UnicornI can't seem to log back in to stackoverflow.com now on my Mac (I'm still logged in on my PC). I'm getting the following error message (my OpenID provider is WordPress.com): Unable to log in with your OpenID provider: The following required parameters were missing from the DotNetOpenAuth...

"eliminating Moshe... slugster... Andrew Barber... Dennis... Sathya... awoodland..." reads to me about SO not OpenSTV. Anyway, I think blunt not OK to do closes that to me thanks for "explanation"

Just read the comments, and notice that I voted to close my own question too

@Bart Haha, yup, I think you're good =)

@gnat Seriously? You're basing the topic on the output of a program that has absolutely nothing to do with us? Wow.
I shall now rest my case.

8:31 PM
@TimStone Do you use the chat in Diablo 3 much?

Not too often, why?

Usually, when you whisper to someone, every time you hit "enter" after that it replies to that person. They just changed that in the new patch (now you have to explicitly reply every time). I was just going to bitch about it to see if you thought it was as annoying as I do.

Oh wow, that does seem annoying |:

If a post is closed as discussion or something not for SO, is the post deleted? If not, should reputation for answering go away? (Not that it did, I'm just wondering if there is a way to discourage this type of interaction.)

@TimStone Sho' is. Sho' is.
Ha, D3 forum post about it.

8:40 PM
Ah, you can press R
At least it's not gone completely then, I suppose

Indeed. I actually didn't know that til just a minute ago. That's not so bad.
Hey, as long as it's still one button. I'm indifferent about whether the button is "enter" or "R"

Apparently it's a configurable key binding, so if R doesn't work for you I assume you can reset it to something that works best for you.

Oh, I didn't notice that. This just gets better and better. I really should have, um, used Google last night.
(Instead of whining about it and then signing in to Mumble)

Nah, that's what I would have done first too, it's OK ;)
I'm too jaded for patience! RAH!

Hahaha
Patience is for { the group of people I feel like being superior to right now }
rolls the dice
Noobs. Patience is for noobs.
