fail success

?
status-completed
Oh. Duh.
And here I've been typing [meta-tag:status-completed] the whole time
Didn't think that chat was smart enough to recognize [status-completed] on its own
@balpha Shouldn't [status-completed] actually create a link to the tag page on Meta?

status-whatever
is a different thing

The chat is smarter than me at times (which is not really a big challenge).

Anyway, the question that I linked to has still been [status-completed] for a long time
(Oh, come on! Chat can't prettify the tag inline?)

12:14 AM
status-completed
And [status-completed]
Same code, rendered differently

status-really

Anonymous
Well, that's weird and unexpected.

status-lol

12:50 AM
Is there a way to view all the tags on a site that match some pattern?

Not without the API. Using the /tags query.

1:11 AM
Ahh lame :(
I'm not that interested that I'm going to use the API

The API is totally awesome, you should try it.

Are there unicorns?

Totally.
ALOT (this is not a typo) of unicorns!

I should take a picture of my plush unicorns. I got a pink and a white one. They match. They're in lovvvvve.

1:26 AM
Oh god.

I wonder how a single-issue anti-deletion moderator candidate would fare.

Anonymous
It seems like something that could win support from much of the half-caring electorate.

Anonymous
But the candidate would need to make it through the primaries, and that's more influenced by fully-caring meta-users who are sick of hearing about deleted posts.

Anonymous
I wonder how much a candiate would suffer if they entirely changed their platform ten minutes before the primaries end. :V

1:43 AM
Comments aren't visible in the actual election stage, so most voters would be unaware.

@JeremyBanksʬʬʬ I imagine that someone would notice and roll back the changes

@Chris but that's no fun

This is like a real election

primaries should be full of lies to appeal to the politically-invested base.

2:01 AM
@JeremyBanksʬʬʬ Oh, I see what you did there

2:32 AM
I told my doctor that I was constipated. He didn't believe me, so he told me that I'm full of s**t.

Sounds like an FML line...

@animuson Actually, I thought of it today.
I might have heard it once upon a time.

3:10 AM

hi @TimStone

aha
I'm drugged up on cold meds

That sounds rather unpleasant

@TimStone Unpleasant is the sharp ear pain that caused me to get frustrated and overpay for a cab ride :P
The meds are quite nice =)

3:14 AM
Heh :P

@mootinator - When's the Chitown trip?

@Moshe Just arrived three hours ago.

Ah, cool. Did you contact my contact?

Flying with a cold caused my sharp ear pain which refuses to go away.

Perhaps you're turning into a unicorn?

3:16 AM
@Moshe Yeah, he said he didn't have much useful to say.

The unicorn equivalent of teething (when the horn grows out) is painful, I hear.
@mootinator Ah, well. Sorry bout that. It's better than I could've done.
@mootinator is turning into a unicorn.

No biggie.
Easier to find my way around than I anticipated.

Cool. I should travel somewhere someday. sigh :P
I love walking 'cept when the ball of my foot complains. Then I need to give it a break.

I just need to stop looking up I look like such a tourist lol.
My city literally has a bylaw against building anything higher than 10 stories downtown.

Ha.
@mootinator You're canadian, you know French, right?

3:20 AM
un peu
But 'i'm from Saskaatchewan so we don't take our French knowing very seriously.

To be a tourist in NYC, all you need is a camera and some French.

Saskaaaaaaatchewan

But we get people from France here.

I'd probably understand them better than people from Montreal.
For instance, my cousins' dad is from France originally.
I can follow their conversations.
And I went to a strip club in Montreal once. And couldn't understand what the f*** they were talking about.
True story.

@mootinator Well, that's probably exactly what they were talking about. :P

3:27 AM
Indeed.

(clever pun there, not very nice though, so don't quote me on it.)

Fortunately in Montreal all you have to do is speak French badly and suddenly everyone knows English.
3

Haha. I was in Toronto once.
Cleanest streets ever.
In the tourist area near Niagara Falls and the Ripley museum.

haha
I was going to say...
Toronto itself isn't really known for it's cleanliness.

Well, we were told otherwise.
quick, get out the broom! tourists are coming from NY. We need to make a good impression on our southern neighbors.

3:32 AM
@mootinator Heh, I was thinking the same thing

Anonymous
(Torontonian) They're pretty okay.

I've only spent a few hours here and there in T.O. outside of the airport.

I dunno. The sidewalk for blocks outside the kosher pizza in toronto was lickably clean.

raises brow

FWIW, I had the same thought about the streets in Chicago.

3:37 AM
@TimStone Hey, have you seen my eyeball app? You just reminded me of Uncle Fred.

But if you're from Saskatoon any roads which get any maintenance whatsoever tend to look clean.

Heh. I need to visit then.
I'm effectively inviting myself over so long as you are within public transit distance of kosher food and you don't have any pets. :P

@mootinator I lived on an island outside of Kingston for a while where road maintenance was them coming with a truck full of gravel and spraying some tar over top of it. Good stuff. Terrible for biking.

(I was walking in Brooklyn, NY today and as I passed by a knee height white fluffy dog, it started snarling at me. It nearly jumped me.)

You should come between March and May when there's a haze over the city because they haven't bothered to sweep up the sand they spread on the road during the winter.
@TimStone An island outside of Kingston? But there are 1000 of those!

3:40 AM
I guess that's why they couldn't be bothered to pave. :P

Sounds very familiar though.

@mootinator - Are you near Ottowa? I have some friends from there.

My in-laws all live in the Ottawa region so I'm there at least annually.

Ah, ok.
I won a 4GB USB drive today at school.
Yay.

woot woot

3:47 AM
Yea, it is. Except I have two others, and sneakernet doesn't exist in the iOS ecosystem.
I wanna go to sleep but there's the town hall...

Is this some sort of super Tuesday or something? The TV won't stop prattling on about republican candidates.

@mootinator It's primary season. Caucuses and stuff. Being that the republicans are not in the White house, they're picking a contender to compete with the incumbent yadayada.
I try to stay away from politics. Gonna vote and all, but not in favor of personal attacks on candidates. Half of what they say is just to grab my vote anyway, so it's immaterial.

Oh, my bad this is just a normal Tuesday.
In the United States, Super Tuesday, in general, refers to the Tuesday in February or March of a presidential election year when the greatest number of states hold primary elections to select delegates to national conventions at which each party's presidential candidates are officially nominated. More delegates can be won on Super Tuesday than on any other single day of the primary calendar, and, accordingly, candidates seeking the presidency traditionally must do well on this day to secure their party's nomination. In 2008, Super Tuesday was February 5; 24 states held primaries or cauc...

Lol oh gosh not politics. It's bad enough my parents keep their TV on volume 5 million so I can hear all the garbage they're listening too... -.-

@animuson My friend's mom listens to some radio in Russian - really loudly. He can relate. I find it amusing.

3:54 AM
Sorry
I turned on Titanic.
More cheerful..

Whawhawha....
I heard a song in music class today and downloaded it from iTunes.

Hahaha that sounds like a good idea, I wonder if they have it on Netflix
They have that new 3D remake of it coming to theaters soon!

Yeaaah.

Too bad 3D movies give me headaches...

I saw a poster for the Star Wars Episode 1 3D remaster today. sigh

3:56 AM
I have not seen any Star Wars movies :/
I've seen the Family Guy Star Wars parody episodes though

I saw an ad in the subway for a movie called "Lorax" today. Was in a hurry, but it looked cool.
Big bushy orange mustache.

Ya I saw it on TV but I have no idea what it's about...

The Lorax is a children's book by Dr. Suess.

Q: A more "meta" logo?

Gabriel CuvillierI think that the Meta logo does not reflect its "meta" nature. What about something like that instead: Or Or any other ideas? EDIT: or, as suggested by random, something more ouroboros such as:

hi Guys
@tim
@TimStone do flaging is not working
when iam flaging. i get message as "Message should contain more than 10 characters" even though my message containing more than 10 characters
also flag is not getting saved
any mods here?
i was banned to post question in meta
so please check once

1:47 PM
iam unable to flag the posts....

2:10 PM
@Damodar If your flags are frequently and consistently declined, your flags will supressed
@Damodar Here's a meta post that talks about that at the end.
I found that by using this neat "search feature" on Meta Stack Overflow. You should totally try it sometime, it's just awesome -__-

@jadarnel27 if iam posting a message for flag. its not saving. if not iam able to flag for posts
also iam not finding flag weight , its was like 557.some decimal number but now iam unable to find it
any changes happened on flagging concept

@Damodar With the powers of Search™: What happened to flag weight?

2:31 PM

@TheUnicornWhisperer hi

Q: Full Badge Descriptions On the Badge Page

C.BarlowCould we get a link to this information (not necessarily the Meta page itself): List Of All Badges With Full Descriptions On this page: Badges I love the full descriptions (very informative) but I had to go to Meta and search for it to find it. It's such a good resource, it seems odd not to ...

I really like ShadowWizard's answer, by the way

While I look for that, enjoy this revision description summary notice thing:
> corrected obvoius spelling mistake

lol. Awesome.

@jadarnel27 Not exactly the same, but there is
1
Q: Badge info/wiki page request

Oscar ReyesCan we have a "info" wiki page for the given badge the way tags do? Most of the times the badge is self explaining, but I think it would be interesting to have a wiki-page where examples, rationale, and other interesting texts could be added, just like tags have today.

I'm sure I've seen that exact idea suggested before, but I think it was in a comment, not a full-fledged feature request.
5
Q: Why is the description on the badges page so sparse?

demongolemIf you go to List of all badges with full descriptions you can get the full badge descriptions, I see that. When you push badges on the top banner next to SO or meta or whatever, you get the full list of current badges with checkmark notification if you have earned that badge and a very short de...

6
Q: Make each Badge page a wiki

SwDevMan81It would be nice to be able to put the information from the List of all badges with full descriptions post into each Badge page. If the badge pages were wikis they could be updated by anyone.

Oh wow. That last question is very similar to the answer on this new question.
You're a meta-searching wizard, thanks @PopularDemand =)

You're welcome, but actually I pulled all of those from the "Related Links" sidebar.

3:23 PM
@PopularDemand Oh gosh. I'm a silly bitch then.
My bad =/

Ugh, Reader's got to go

@jadarnel27 No problem. I do sometimes pull things from memory; just didn't happen this particular time.

@YiJiangsProble_ Oh, so you actually also use Ubuntu. Awesome. :)

@TheUnicornWhisperer Well, I said half of my rep comes from editing stuff
The other half's got to come from somewhere, right?

@PopularDemand I think this new question is in better shape than this one. I'm conflicted about what the best course of action is. rawr.

3:36 PM
There's this bug I reported a while ago. There was no feedback on it whatsoever, even though most -tagged questions seems to get handled very quickly. Did it get "lost"? What should I do to draw attention to it?

@YiJiangsProble_ True.

@Szabolcs I looked into it (not that that has anything to do with it getting fixed), and it seems like it may be non-trivial to fix (although I still have no idea why it happens in the rendered post). I'm sure it'll be looked at at some point, though, but there may be more pressing issues at the moment (the issue is understandably frustrating, but likely impacts relatively small subset of posts at the moment). :)

@Szabolcs It took me until just now to understand what the problem was. I'm not sure how to write a better example just yet. I'll throw a bounty on it, if you like.

For what it's worth, I'll try and piece together a solution for the preview case later, which may prompt a fix if we're lucky.

4:14 PM
Morning.

@Moshe Howdy howdy howdy

4:32 PM
@PopularDemand Thanks, but is there really a point in a bounty? If it's fixed, it will be fixed by StackExchange, and I don't think the employees there care about bounties. If you guys say it didn't get "lost", then I'll just wait :-)

@Szabolcs I'm quite surprised nobody had reported that bug before

I don't think that too many sites have MathJax enabled, do they?

5:03 PM
(pings @jadarnel27)
Thoughts? I'm concerned that it's cheesy the second time around.

5:29 PM
@Moshe Hehe, I'll check it out as soon as I get a minute. It's unusually busy in the world of "jadarnel27, the programmer" (as opposed to "jadarnel27, the guy goofing off on meta all the time") this morning.

@TimStone Eh, I'm not to familiar with Google Code. Is there any standard mechanism for suggesting patches (like GitHub's pull requests) or do you just send a patchfile/whatever? I have a minor change to PageDown I'd like to request/submit.

Google Code is pretty stupid about that, so there's no pull mechanism
For one patch, I just opened an issue and linked to my revision.
So opening the issue with a patch file or a link to the changeset seems like the best approach, personally. You can ask balpha what he prefers, too.

Anonymous
Okay, thanks. It's only a few lines, so I'll probably just include it with the issue.

Anonymous
6:02 PM
@TimStone Ooooh, it looks like Google Code has added a "Suggest Patch" option, if you attempt to use the inline editor but you aren't a committer (example).

Anonymous
Swell.

Oh, huh, so it does. I hadn't seen that before, only ever tried to online-edit my own projects.

Anonymous
Apparently it's the same as creating an issue with an attached patch. Had I realized that I would have used a better title than the default of "Patch for /Markdown.Editor.js". =P

Ah ha, heheh. :P

6:18 PM
THE PEOPLE WIN!!!
Feb 2012, is a glorious month indeed.

o_O
Oh right, I just remembered who you are.

@TheUnicornWhisperer Ooh, please elaborate on that ;-)

I figure it like this, with Jeff deposed I'll regain my ability to post to meta.stackoverflow.com again.
It's about time too. This extrajudicial ban is horseshit.

Anonymous
@EvanCarroll I came across your review on Real World Haskell on Amazon a few days ago. As I recall, it was the most negative of the lot. Familiarity with your Stack Exchange posts helped me put it in perspective. :)

@jadarnel27 Just search for Evan Carroll here in chat. ;)

6:23 PM
@EvanCarroll No, the extrajudicial ban is now official company policy* =)
You'll have to get it overturned at a shareholder meeting.

Real World Haskell was a pretty bad book
Can I keynote at that meeting?
I think it'd be a good idea, I could make StackOverflow big.

^_^

Evan Carroll -- making big companies bigger with nothing more than Democracy.
I've got an idea for Stack Overflow, let's make it a community driven site.

Oh that is a fantastic idea!

Democracy is overrated.

6:28 PM
mootinator: You're probably a Republican agent provocateur: got word the people flushed the despot and now you feel a bit threatened?

O_o

I wonder if, with Jeff gone, we can uncensor all of my posts.
That's a little silly too.
The People want them.

Anonymous
@EvanCarroll Wait, you're not banned anymore, are you? It doesn't appear so.

Just someone who believes inalienable rights > democracy is all.

@JeremyBanks I'm still banned, Jeff just let's me chat, answer, and comment.
He said he'll never let me ask questions again.
Don't ask me...
I'm hoping that changes with the people's coup.

6:41 PM
@EvanCarroll I see. Did this begin after your full suspension expired? It seems like you could have have accumulated enough downvotes in the meanwhile that a question ban kicked in, no special treatment required. (Though if Jeff actually said he special-cased you, that's kind-of interesting.)

Jeff's interests aren't the same as yours. At first he was busy failing and getting rich. Now he's going to stop failing and get to spending time with his family.
My interests are not in seeing that Jeff gets rich, I want to see an empowered userbase of MSO/SE.

Anonymous
Yes, I've read enough of your posts that I think I understand your position.

You can never read enough of posts, until you agree.

Anonymous
I'm pretty sure that Jeff's assessment of you as a relatively careful troll is true. It fits your behaviour of making somewhat-valid points, but using excessively inflammatory rhetoric.

Anonymous
That validity sows doubt in the minds of other users, even while they reactively downvote you.

6:51 PM
Having Jeff talk about me publicly as a troll, is no more right than having Barack Obama call Manning a criminal who broke the law before his trial.
If the site is community driven, then it's not his job as the propaganda commissar to taint the populous.

> "We don't own Stack Exchange" is an abject untruth. While I can't gauge whether or not you intended for people to believe that they actually have any real ownership in any of the Stack Exchange sites, as one of the principals, you should be extremely clear in your positions on anything regarding anything on any of the sites. Pithy is antithetical to the philosophy of Stack Exchange. – casperOne♦ Jan 11 at 1:51

He managed to get 50 upvotes on that comment, a direct reply to Joel. I wonder why your posts, making similar points, are so much more poorly-received? (Admittedly, comments can't be downvoted, so this is up-biased, but I strongly doubt it would have anywhere close to 50 downvotes.)

Perhaps a particular diamond character?

Anonymous
@animuson ...perhaps. :P

@JeremyBanksʬʬʬ I think that comment makes more sense when you look at Joel's original answer

I agree with @EvanCarroll that the "community-owned" rhetoric from SEI goes too far.

Anonymous
I disagree that actual complete community ownership would be an improvement (Reddit being the best counterexample, as Jeff has often mentioned recently).

Still, I'd say SEI is better than most
The data dumps in particular give you quite a bit of flexibility for reuse

Anonymous
Yeah; the license and dumps make the content essentially community-owned.

Right

Anonymous
The sites themselves... less so.

7:21 PM
Hm; how about a federated Q&A protocol?

Anonymous
That would be an interesting project. :P

you still don't escape the "who controls the federation" problem though

I guess I was imagining a standard format for Q&A blog posts that could be shared through this protocol

Anonymous
A topic-weighted web of trust, bootstrapped from Stack Exchange reputation scores. :D

Ooohhhh
Sigh
It makes me pine for what Google Wave could have been all over again

@Moshe I think I just enjoy that style of writing, and you do it well. Thanks for sharing =) I imagine it might get cheesy if that's all you ever did.

Wow. That disappeared quickly @EvanCarroll.

Damn I wanted to read the entire message :(

I nominate Evan Carroll.

Evan Carroll has a long history of advocating democracy, equality, and fairness. These are things that were neglected under Jeff's reign. Now with the abdication of the tyrant, these are things the community should push for. A vote for Evan is like a vote to turn Stack Overflow into a community driven site: a true site run by the community. A vote for Evan is a voice that speaks to vetoing the policies of Atwoodism.

Under the old tyranny Evan Carroll was prohibited from posting questions: this was an effort by the establishment to stop the rise of the proletariat.

You know what's funny, someone had already posted on there nominating Evan as a joke. It got to -13 before it was deleted.

@EvanCarroll Yay for "community driven"!

lol Robert closed it so you can't add more answers xP

@TimStone Ah, I must missed the last 5 votes there.

I like that -- when the real Community doesn't act, let's empower a bot to wreck havoc and call it "community." A bot created by Jeff Atwood and cursed with the same inept understanding of Democracy.
Now the whole question which was answered by Joel Spolsky has been deemed "not constructive" by Robert Harvey♦.
Apparently, it's "not constructive" to decide who will fill the power void left behind by Jeff. We'll be getting another puppet dictator to fill his place and we have no say in this matter. Take your votes elsewhere. Today this site is run by Robert Harvey♦ soon to be Robert Harvey♦♦. Seriously, you shouldn't be privileged to squelch a discussion when you're on the shortlist of heirs to the Atwood autocracy.

subtle? Now is the time to take a stand. We're witnessing a change in guards. If we don't act now the next person who takes that assignment might not step down for 50 years.

Suddenly, I feel like putting on a Guy Fawkes mask.

@EvanCarroll I guess subtlety wasn't necessary this time; you've got a close/open war and plenty of comments. Success.

You know, @EvanCarroll, for all your talk of "the people" and "democracy", you sure don't mind starting close/open wars and comment arguments that detract from otherwise reasonable questions

Nope, the mass-deletion (censorship?!) of non-constructive answers has resolved the issue peacefully. (edit: this is regarding my comment of "Success.")

@Chris I've never closed anything and a vote to open is consistent with open-discourse a cornerstone of Democracy.

Q: What is up with the source code license on Stack Overflow?

csharptest.netI know this has been asked several times. I've read the responses. I'm still very confused. What are the legal requirements for using samples from SO in other projects? If there are requirements, how should we go about removing them? Case in point: a user who's question I answered was concerne...

"Can I apply a Creative Commons license to software? We do not recommend it. Creative Commons licenses should not be used for software. We strongly encourage you to use one of the very good software licenses which are already available. [...] Furthermore, our licenses are not compatible with the GPL, the most frequently used free software license."
It would be nice to keep bounty remarks like this

Q: Add bounty remarks to a question's revision history

ChrisA question's revision history has shown bounty events for quite some time now. Since then, Stack Exchange has also added support for bounty remarks.
