12:49 AM
Anyone here?
Looking for a webcam recommendation for my Dad. Also, do any webcams have mic built in? (I never had to buy one.)

1:10 AM
(Taken care of in the SuperUser Root access room.)

1 hour later…
2:18 AM
So... does this mean that it's never going to be possible to buy a touchpad again? The website implies that there may be more stock coming soon... Am I being stupid by imagining that there may be another batch?

2:34 AM
waits for permission to do something other than wait for an e-mail...

user157982
@Moshe You might be able to get one, but I would count it as being significantly more difficult right now unless you're willing to pay absurd prices for them from the jerks buying them to resell on ebay.

@nil Is it worth $100?
I'm not convinced - I would have ordered one when they were easily available.

user157982
Well, I got one for $130 on the way, and it might be worth it for email and web browsing

user157982
However, I got one just for hacking on

user157982
Since I kind of like their SDK - it's all very simple.

2:45 AM
Ah, now I wish I had...
:-)
Looks like there'll be another round. I can wait. In a couple of weeks, the jerks will have no buyers and hopefully prices will fall...

user157982
Hopefully. I get the impression that the jerks have a genuine mental disorder that causes them to obsessively buy things in bulk to sell on ebay.

@nil That too... :-) I starts college next week, but orientation is in two days. Many people by a computer to prepare, but thank Gd, I have several. A webOS tablet would have been a nice toy for the occasion.
@nil They should have limited 1 per customer, if they didn't already.

user157982
My classes started today. It's been interesting.

@nil Can we do a G+ hangout or is now a bad time?

user157982
I took Intro to C for fun, but since I already know C, I might be doing a special project for someone on campus or something.

2:53 AM
@nil I'm doing intro to C++.

user157982
I can try, we'll have to see how much background noise leaks in

user157982
I remember doing intro to C++, fun stuff

user157982
I never got more than two C++ courses, but they were surprisingly well done

user157982
I'm actually not allowed to take most CS courses anymore since I'm majoring in English and don't have the math prerequisites, which has me bummed out since I'd love to take some advanced courses just for fun

@nil Started the hangout check your Google stream.

2 hours later…
5:22 AM
@nil - Heh, just fixed the bug. I'm an idiot.

9 hours later…

The MONIAC (Monetary National Income Analogue Computer) also known as the Phillips Hydraulic Computer and the Financephalograph, was created in 1949 by the New Zealand economist Bill Phillips (William Phillips) to model the national economic processes of the United Kingdom, while Phillips was a student at the London School of Economics (LSE), The MONIAC was an analogue computer which used fluidic logic to model the workings of an economy. The MONIAC name may have been suggested by an association of money and ENIAC, an early electronic digital computer. Description The MONIAC was approxi...

@YiJiang No, dang it. I shall not be sucked into wikipedia right now. Instead, I shall be sucked into my comfy bed and come back to that later. :0

@GeorgeMarian whistles innocently, goes to find ways to link to TV Tropes

leaves before that occurs
g'night

2:57 PM
Hello

HELLO EVERYONE
How do I use a different color text in chat?
only the last line i type is green, and only for a second.
I want it to be a dark red, forever.

You can't
Well, that's not entirely true
you could with a userscript, but it wouldn't affect everyone else

hi all

@EvanCarroll ?

5:01 PM

guess you can't keep a log of the chat...
I suppose there is a personal use exclusion

@EvanCarroll a log of the chat is made public except in some cases.
it's the transcript

@EvanCarroll That's come up before on the meta of a beta site. I just wish I could remember precisely which one it was.

5:20 PM
@jcolebrand omg I need one.

5:37 PM
Business idea: "Iterative Vacation Planning"

Iterative Vacation Planning?

5:55 PM
We just had an earthquake O_o

@TimStone so did we!

@TimStone I hate those.

where r u?
ive never been in one before..

Delaware

wow
we are in NYC

5:57 PM
Earthquakes are quite uncommon for the east coast?

Southern Virginia, too.

@TimPost very uncommon...

I lived in Maryland for almost 30 years, I didn't experience my first until moving to The Philippines

i see nowhere on google abt it
where do u find reports on this stuff?

@TimPost Yeah, I think that this is the first time I've ever felt my house shift.
Apparently it was a 5.8, in Virginia. I guess someone was trying to kill @PopularDemand.

6:02 PM
@TimStone The first time I felt one, I immediately knew what it was, but that didn't stop the natural physical reaction that someone has when something that should be solid and stationary starts moving around. It's just .. unpleasant to say the least.

that was my 1st experience

So ... a 5.8 ... that's stout
> 5.0–5.9 Moderate Can cause major damage to poorly constructed buildings over small regions. At most slight damage to well-designed buildings. 800 per year
the next stage up (not too far from that) is
> 6.0–6.9 Strong Can be destructive in areas up to about 160 kilometres (100 mi) across in populated areas. 120 per year

Yeah, That's the kind that makes you dive under a desk.

This is somehow emblematic of "what my problem is": apparently there was just an earthquake that everyone in NYC noticed but me.
Hey, something earthshaking finally made it up to Albany!

@jcolebrand lol

6:05 PM
We are evacuating the building after the #nycquake. More soon!
Now's our chance. Someone take over Rovio! We can burn 'em out!

At Stack Exchange, our moderators are shaken, not stirred.

@TimStone where's that tank?

@jcolebrand Probably out enslaving humanity now, I'm sure they left it alone with Rovio.

@jcolebrand wa?

@Neal wha?

6:11 PM
@jcolebrand lol

Oh, they upgraded it to a 5.9 now, heh. :P

So since it was like 80 miles outside of DC, this was obviously a terrorist attack right?
We need to go ahead and spread the word.

Seems that the interwebs move fast.

#Confirmed Terrorist Attack!

ha

6:14 PM
I felt that, but was't quite sure what it was.

The Terrorist Tectonic Plates would be an excellent band name.
That's my h/t to Dave Barry for the decade.

lol
Wait, there were two earthquakes?

@jcolebrand one in colorado and one in virginia

Ahh, the apocalypse is finally starting.

6:22 PM
Earthquake made me spill my tea.. I'm available for interviews

Hahah

@RebeccaChernoff lol

All you can do is hope you're not on the 50'th floor of some building when one hits. That is really scary.

@TimPost lol naaah, just on the 15th.... but still quite scary

The RT on that feed made me lol
WAS IT PREMATURE TO DO ALL THAT LOOTING

6:24 PM
A client site I visit in Makati quite often is on the 40'th floor. One hit and we all just started rolling around in our chairs.

@TimPost Stack Exchange's offices are on the 26th floor, heh. Half-way there.

ive never been in one... before today

Wow, that's crazy

@Neal colorado?

Thankfully, I've yet to find myself in an elevator when one hit.

I missed a 5.9 in CA because I decided to stay in LV an extra day.
Noticed the small aftershocks though, we thought we were above a laundry room in our CA hotel before figuring it out :P

There was a 5.5 (iirc) in IL a couple years ago that we could feel here in StL. We commented on the building shaking and went back to work. Heh.

...i am am quite dizzy now..

7:14 PM
@TimStone They'll have to try harder than that! (Not a request for anyone to try harder than that. Or to try at all.)
@jcolebrand "not too far" numerically, but remember that the Richter scale is logarithmic.

7:30 PM
'Ello @tombull89
@PopularDemand Oh, I already started scheming. Ah well.

@TimStone heya just dropping in for a moment.

7:44 PM
I wonder what's different about your environment that's causing the forced reloading behaviour, hmm..

8:19 PM
EARTHQUAKES FOR EVVVVVeeerrryyyyOOOOnnnneeeeeee!!! New York gets an earthquake, DC gets an earthquake, Virginia gets an earthquake...
@PopularDemand yes, which means a 5.8 is "pretty close" to a 6.0 ... and a 5.9 is that much closer. Especially when comparing 5.0 to 6.0

8:41 PM

3 hours later…
11:54 PM
@jcolebrand Ah, I thought you meant 5.0 was pretty close to 6.9. I blame pronouns.

Indeed sir
