12:04 AM
Why are all the media sites reporting 6.0? Opportunists...
@jcolebrand Heh :-)

3 hours later…
2:56 AM
Orientation in less than 12 hours. :-O

2 hours later…
4:33 AM
With that fan on, I'm freezing. With it off, I'm baking. Heh.

4:45 AM
I'm going to kill the guy that told me that this wasnt actually so bad
I must admit I lacked some commons sense there...

1 hour later…
I must agree @Trufa. :)
> On a weekend trip to Hawaii, a plastic surgeon convinces his loyal assistant to pose as his soon-to-be-divorced wife in order to cover up a careless lie he told to his much-younger girlfriend.
+ Adam Sandler
+ Jennifer Aniston = too many tell-tale signs
@GeorgeMarian hahaha!

@EatmoreTwisters I was sworn it wasn't exactly what I expected, and well... it was!

@Trufa Let's see it starts Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston. There is only one thing it could be. :)

hehe
I was on a good streak!

6:35 AM
@Trufa you should sue the person who sent you there. Loss of two hours' productivity, aesthetic damages.

hehe
@EatmoreTwisters How is your career change going BTW?

@Trufa that's a long story! I am still labouring away on a huge project that has been running since more than one and a half years. I did try to find work in tourism in Cologne back in winter/spring, but nothing worked out - Germans are so fixated on degrees, sadly, and of course I have nothing to show in that field. My great wish is to make it to the US on a Green Card - for that, I'm even willing to stay in IT with a full-time job (which is an immigration requirement anyway).
I hope the US work out next year. It's really tough to find a job though, as the legal paperwork for immigration is so taxing for both the employee and the prospective employer. (You need the promise of a job to even get a chance to apply for a work visa or Green Card.)

@EatmoreTwisters I though Europeans did not need a visa, I have a spanish passport and I always though I was allowed in with no visa (green card I guess it's a different story)
I may be wrong though

@Trufa it's no problem to travel the US, but it is a huge issue to live and work there.
It's similar in Europe - you have to jump through a lot of hoops to get permission to hire somebody from Russia or India.
The thing all US immigrants long for is the Green Card, the permanent right to live and work in the country. They have a lottery every year, maybe I get lucky there!

@EatmoreTwisters I can imagine. A family friends, had huge economic trouble (here in uruguay) they tried to get the green card for years and years, amazingly they actually won it in the green card lottery

6:48 AM
@EatmoreTwisters green card is hard to come by.. and has pre-requisites

@EatmoreTwisters hehe speaking of!

@Trufa yeah, it's a nice system. They have a quota per country, so you have some chance wherever you are.
@Sathya yup I know, I have two books on the subject on my shelf :)

@EatmoreTwisters ... and apparently now it's impossible for me.

@EatmoreTwisters yeah, I think it is quite a horrible system actually
:)

> For DV-2012, natives of the following nations are ineligible: Brazil, Canada, China (mainland-born), Colombia, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Haiti, India

6:50 AM
@Trufa I mean the lottery. That is quite nice, as the prerequisites are relatively low. You just have to show you have some money and some education.
@Sathya yeah, that changes yearly I think. IIRC, countries who had more than a set quota of immigration the years before get shut out for a few cycles
But it doesn't mean you can't get a Green Card - the non-lottery, individual process is just infinitely harder.

yep.

You have to have a job offer, the employer has to prove they can't find an American with the same qualification, etc. etc.

@EatmoreTwisters yeahh, I mean it's not that horrible, but I don't like the moral behind that, they should only give it to the ones that deserve it. Also I think it plays with people illusions. But maybe Im over reacting

@Trufa I see what you mean, but the effect of that would probably be that people from poorer countries would be largely shut out (seeing as they often don't have University education etc.) This way, there is some chance even for them to "make" it in the US... But I'm no expert on the topic, I don't know how it works in reality.

@EatmoreTwisters yes indeed that would be the other side of it! :)

6:56 AM
@Trufa And if all that doesn't work out, I'll have to learn Spanish and move to Lanzarote. I'll live in a trailer and make a living selling art to tourists or something. :) It's such a beautiful and simple island - although very rough at times, with heat waves and sandstorms from Africa.

@EatmoreTwisters I have family in austria, my cousin is studied tourimsn/hotel/something/something maybe if you are ever around there and you are interested I could give him a call
@EatmoreTwisters I see you have some dreams! nice!

@Trufa cool, thanks for the offer! I'll contact you if my plans don't work out, and start searching in that field again.
@Trufa the Lanzarote one is only a half-serious one - I was on holiday there for three weeks, and liked it a lot. I'm sure it's a different thing to live there on a permanent basis, you know how it is. I'm completely serious about the US though - if there is any chance, I will take it

@EatmoreTwisters spanish is an easy language to learn btw

@Trufa yeah! And a nice language, too. Sounds very pleasant.

@EatmoreTwisters ohh believe me, it has nothing to do with german!

7:02 AM
@Trufa I know, I know. But I did Latin and French in school. I wasn't much of a student back then but there may be a basis somewhere in my brain!
Plus, from Finnish, I can roll the "r" properly and form a soft "s", which are good prerequisites.

If you wan a reference, my cousin came here to live for 6 months. She learnt spanish (though already had a VERY small basis) extremely well
@EatmoreTwisters hehe well that is quite something

@Trufa nice!

@EatmoreTwisters I wish I could pronunce brüke

Oh yeah, the hard ck

you can't imagine how many time I have repeated that

7:04 AM
@Trufa Right! That is difficult.
You have an audio reference?
Because there is a great on-line dictionary that has them for almost every word I think.

@EatmoreTwisters yeah... most of my family speaks german quite fluently, so I can imitate the accent very well
I have a much better accent that vocabulary

@Trufa yeah, you mentioned that, true!
@Trufa nice! I think that's the important part - vocabulary is learnable.

@EatmoreTwisters the goood thing about spanish though is that there are very few exceptions
Unlike you crazy germans
It would be unfair to call the rules any longer, they are all exceptions :)

@Trufa Yeah! Thank God for the Romanic languages and their neat structure.
@Trufa yeah.

@EatmoreTwisters hehe I actually love german don't get me wrong,
the fact that it's so coplicated makes it rich i think

7:09 AM
@Trufa There's probably something to that!
The best thing is probably practice... Listening to (good) Radio, movies, etc... To get a feel for the rules, ehm, exceptions :)

The only way :)
@EatmoreTwisters I'm going to sleep now, but if you ever want to try something out (tourism realted) in austria, the offer stands!
I can't guarantee much, but I'll do what I can!

@Trufa Great, thanks! Have a good night and talk to you later.

@EatmoreTwisters night!! see you see ya!!

5 hours later…
11:57 AM
Heya. Does somebody here learn to speak czech?

12:55 PM
I have a hypothetical question that I am looking for serious answers and/or discussion about. My email is gfosco AT gmail. The question:: If you were an evil mastermind (or a good one i suppose,) with control of a MASSIVE cloud computing platform.... What kind of stuff would you do? From that, I think we can imagine tools and processes for achieving many things.

2 hours later…
3:14 PM
@jcole at orientation right now. Waiting for it to start. The people in the row in front of me are having the most hilarious geeky Convo I ever heard.

@Moshe 'gratz
@Moshe did you introduce yourself and join in? This is how friends are made.

hi everyone

@jcole - not yet. I might soon.

@Moshe then you've lost your chance already

3:36 PM
I did.
Yay me.

3:55 PM
@Moshe orientation fo what? lol

The only reason I ever star a message in GMail is by accident.
@jcolebrand I think I just found my first Node.JS project... a cross-platform command & control client for zombie virtual machines. essentially, malware. :)

@Fosco Nice. I like how you're going to remote install a webserver onto the machines by bootstrapping it.
That should net you a few billion dollars in patents ;)

lol.... it's going to be baked into the image. This will be for all legitimate purposes. It's not really malware if you create it and use it on your own equipment. )

4:36 PM
I'm taking short development cycle to a new level today. O_o.
This is what happens when you get real users involved after release. sigh
"That thing I told you we didn't need? They say it's unusable without it."

@mootinator Who needs requirements gathering, pssh.

Indeed. We need last minute heroics instead.

That's rough, good luck with that :/

I love last minute heroics! Go Mooti!

Go moot!
@neal school.

4:47 PM
@Moshe school? since when does school have orientation? (unless its ur freshman yr)
lol

@TimStone I think we're fine. Complaints are starting to get more pedantic.

Ah, that's good at least

hanselman.com/blog/ImAPhonyAreYou.aspx <-- if you haven't read this, read it

@neal it is freshman

@Moshe fun stuff. good school?

4:57 PM
Brooklyn CUNY
Listening to someone talk atm.
Heard the Provost earlier. Now some workshop.

@Moshe lol have funnn ^_^

Actually, the word Provost sounds cool for my game.

@jcolebrand Great read... I definitely feel that way sometimes. Especially when people are blowing up my ego and I think it's unnecessary.

They're showing a south park.
What not to do if you get arrested.
Sheesh. I've never watched that show before.
What a way to end that streak...

5:23 PM
You've been under a rock if you've never seen south park.

5:38 PM
@Fosco for what it's worth he's been under a rock
he's also very religious

@Moshe why would they show that at an orientation? lol

3 hours later…
8:31 PM
@JeffAtwood I'm getting HTTP 500 errors across the entire Stack Exchange network except for Meta Stack Overflow whenever I try to view a question.

you don't really need to ping Jeff lol.

It's a known error, they're looking into it.
(Well, that's what Mrozek said, if we're to believe him)

i dont have that issue

o: did he now? (;

He did. :p

8:33 PM
and you believed something he said? q:

Well, you weren't around, so I figured he had no reason to lie. ;)

sighs Such a long week.

@Neal You don't have what issue? Having to decide whether to believe Mrozek?

@PopularDemand lol the 500 errors

8:40 PM
It looks like they just fixed it.

I actually just waved my hand (even though I wasn't having any issues in the first place), so I'm willing to take responsibility for the fix.

8:51 PM
@TimStone please say that again, I feel bad saying it repeatedly
where is my music?
why do I not have music blasting into my ears?

2 hours later…
whoa

11:03 PM
Whoa, indeed.

11:17 PM
Whoa!
@Neal - They showed it as a "what not to do if you're arrested" thing.

@Moshe ahhh haaaa...
well gn pplz

gn
I'm home now, and exhausted.

does gn mean good night?

I didn't mean to go for that. I'm tired so I must've typed back out of habit.
Looks like this is why Apple delayed the iPhone 5, among other things. Steve must've known he was considering this possibility and a new iPhone after his resignation would probably help the "post-Steve" image of Apple.

11:34 PM
In bizarro world, RIM stock just shot up.

@mootinator Really? Hahaha.

No, not really. AAPL down over 5% in after hours trading though.

Steve Jobs didn't take RIM out singlehandedly. The whole Apple did. (Granted he was a large portion of it, but still...)
@mootinator That I know.
You should invest in me though. :-D

RIMM is only up a tiny bit by comparison :)
@Moshe Totally.
