Where can I go to chat with a moderator on area51? My proposal was closed and I disagree with the reason.

does anyone find any real utility with chat.SO?
I'd love to have a conversation about, say, OSGi, but getting everyone in the room seems kind of difficult for topics like this

@Justin808 Stack Exchange sites aren't really for sites dedicated to recommendations.
these are subjective things
@MarkElliot who is everyone? and what room?

I"M IN!!!!

@RebeccaChernoff I suppose I mean anyone

@Rebecca - who better to make an informed recommendation other than the experts in that area?

1:17 AM
@RebeccaChernoff at least, people knowledgeable on the subject and/or interested in discussion
I'm genuinely curious if/how folks are deriving utility/enjoyment/whatever from chat.SO

@Justin808 experts in what area?
Shopping is not an area of expertise...though some women may disagree I suppose. q:

@RebeccaChernoff - The area of the product. If there isn't a central location for these questions then the specific area's shouldn't close them.

Q: Bluetooth Gamepad for OSX

Justin808I'm looking for a compatible Gamepad for OSX. I've read that the PS3 controller is compatible and have tried it, but it is not. OSX doesn't know how to set the controller ID (1 to 4) so the lights continue to blink. This caused the controller to lose the paring. I've tried to google for bluetoot...

@Justin808, did you see the 3 blog posts I linked?

@RebeccaChernoff I have. i dont think shopping/recommendation type questions are subjective.

so, which of the particular points in the blog posts do you disagree with?

Q: Inline Editing for Stack Exchange Sites

jjnguyWe have inline comment editing, inline editing of questions on Area 51, and inline re-tagging. Can we please have inline Question and Answer editing on the Stack Exchange sites? This has been implemented using a GreaseMonkey Script. Try it out yourself. It's old, so I'm not sure if it will st...

And nothing is displaying on Google+

@RebeccaChernoff I'd have to go re-read them as its been awhile. Generally speaking I don't care how something makes a product better in the long run, its more about what is the better product based on experts opinions. I don't have the time to learn all the little bits and details that make it better. In the case of my linked question I know what I am looking for but can't find a product on my own so was asking for experts to point me in the right direction.

@waffles I still think there should be some animation. (:
@Justin808 but there isn't an area of expertise. It is everything
We don't have 1 single site that people talk about math and programming and bicycles on, they're separate.

@RebeccaChernoff yes ... well the js is in the page if you want to have a play :)

@RebeccaChernoff - But when asked on the site with only that expertise its closed.

1:28 AM
Who here has Google+?

Putting aside the subjectiveness of it, just because someone knows a lot about blenders doesn't mean they can tell me which vacuum to buy.
@Justin808 and the blog posts explain exactly why.

@RebeccaChernoff - and I disagree hence the proposal.

Read the blog comments, search MSO, this has been discussed to oblivion basically. Consider it a network-wide policy.

@Chacha102 me!

@MarkElliot chacha102@gmail.com!

1:31 AM
@Chacha102 invites are off

@MarkElliot I'm already invited

Google already closed the last round
@Chacha102 I'll add an SO circle I guess

@RebeccaChernoff - And that why I wanted one place for it all so its not scattered and not interfering with other site policies. But I see this wont go anywhere so there is not point trying to even explain myself everyone already made up their minds. - Closed sited in my opinion.

@Justin808, you're not the first to suggest a proposal exactly like this. I'm searching for a post I can point you to.

@RebeccaChernoff - That just adds to my reasons for wanting it... others want it too.

1:34 AM
but it goes against the basic philosophy of the network

How so?
I'm asking for an experts recommendation

If the topic is shopping, the shopping experts is the audience. Who are shopping experts? That isn't a thing.
Nor is recommendations what the network does.
because recommendations boil down to someone's opinion
and someone else's opinion
and another person's opinion
and then it becomes a poll

And hows that any different that the 5 answer to a programming question that all do the exact same thing in a different way?

It is easier to measure and say one way is wrong

none are wrong... they all do the exact same thing

1:37 AM
And Chris Prillo is the most active person I've seen on Google+... hmm

@Justin808 you said in a different way

@RebeccaChernoff, all the recommended products do what I'm looking for, just in a different way....

if all the answers you could provide are in some way correct, that's bad
same with on SO, poll questions aren't really allowed anywhere on the network

How do you output "Hello World" in php? A) echo "Hello World" B) print "Hello World" c) ?> Hello World <?php All 3 are correct, none is better than the other but that's a valid programming question.

On Podcast #58, Joel and I had a disagreement. Not the first, and certainly won’t be the last:

Joel says that the only bad simple question is a duplicate simple question. I say simple questions are OK as long as they’re actually interesting (in some way) for other users to consider and answer. To prove his point, Joel actually asks the question on Stack Overflow: How do I move the turtle in LOGO? Do you think this question adds value?

We still have this disagreement. Our community is now struggling with the very same issue across multiple network sites: …

1:43 AM
@Justin808 And that'd be a poor question. On SO, questions about choosing among implementations typically get closed as off-topic.
The only way SE will ever get a site about shopping is if it's about the strategy, tactics, and operational aspects of the act of shopping; but never it's direct implementation as a product comparison.

@RebeccaChernoff - Well, I'm never going to win this then, everyone's mind is already made up. I disagree but who cares about me :)

We don't do these things for the hell of it
They're mistakes that have been made and learned from.
To keep the quality on the sites up.
Which attracts experts.
Which keeps the quality on the sites up
etc (;

I love Google+

Is this a new badge? Nothing is showing up for it on Stack Overflow.
and it isn't listed here

@RebeccaChernoff - I didn't create the proposal for the hell of it either. I'm looking for experts recommendations on an experts site. The quality would stay up in my opinion, but can't test that cause its closed out of hand.

1:48 AM
Yes, it is a new badge.

Given its ID, it must be new

and geez, whoever updates the RFC2SE post is really slacking
hides
@MTibbits feel free to add it!

will do.

thanks (:

@RebeccaChernoff Any idea what post suggested this badge? I can't find any mention of it.

1:57 AM
may not be one, sometimes we come up with these ideas all by ourselves! q:

Hehe. Always the tone of surprise....
Ps. I'm going to clean up my comments on that question.

@waffles have a unicorn fly in with the inline edit elements (:

yes ... on the way @RebeccaChernoff quick @balpha stop what you are doing ... we need unicorns
UNICORN EMERGENCY

zactly!
I'm glad you understand the srsbsns of the matter. (:

@Waffles / @balpha, would this proposal require a lot of back-end changes?

2:08 AM
Inline editing, it lives? :o
Nifty

It does. And soon with unicorns...

2:36 AM
w00t, one more upvote to a silver Java badge
hm, tag upvote counts must be a periodic job

It's run once a day, I think two hours after UTC midnight.
Though the number in your profile updates pretty instantly I believe

yeah, not the badge, the actual profile counts
I was just at 399, and just got 5 upvotes
but those haven't shown up in my profile yet
(the votes, the badge I understand will be delayed)

Ah
OK, so perhaps it's not pretty instant, heh.

@waffles Can you go tell that user they're crazy and that they've always been able to make whatever edit they wanted so long as they've had edit privs? :P

sweet, there it goes

Nice

3:32 AM
So glad to have such a good turnout at my local meeting tonight :D :D :D I'm like a dork right now hehe
@RebeccaChernoff Just assume I'm weird :p

so...carry on as usual?

There's another mode when it comes to me and my complaints? ;)

Q: In a strongly-typed world, why isn't ASP.NET MVC's fragile dependency on naming conventions frowned upon?

John David ParsonsSince forever, strongly-typed objects have been a foundation of object-oriented programming. I love Google+. I'm still amazed Google finally pulled over a pretty good social media offering..

I'm still waiting on open invites

Let's see if anyone joins this hangout..

lmao

I'm not really sure why I want to see or am supposed to care about people hanging out with other people. My stream earlier was mostly just notices about that. <x> hung out with <y>...so what? |:

4:23 AM
because it's a new toy
for the same reason twitter blows up when apple releases a new gizmo

At least that is "news" (;

hahahaha this is "new" tho doesn't that count? :p

So, is plugging in my laptop in a cabin in a rainstorm a bad idea? The MacBook cable has its own er, thingy, on it. I assume it doubles as a surge protector?

ooooh, I should totally share this :D

@Moshe it never hurts to be more careful. I wouldn't expect it does.

@jcolebrand +1 to you for the photo.
Considering my battery is dead, I dunno...

Merci

Well, my iPhone would be vulnerable, just unplugged that. Gonna unplug the comp. It's been a few minutes. I'm tired from the heat. Ttyl.
Wait. You. Pinned. Yourself. :p
Tchüss

@Moshe I did not. I was surprised to see it pinned.

Hi!!!

4:36 AM
I saw you here Tyler ;)

waves

waves
Thar was another one that was more of a closeup, but this one shows the SE shirt ;)

We should have an SE hangout. Someone should invite Misters Atwood and Spolsky to G+. I'm interested to hear Joel's opinion on it.

Have the privacy issues been solved on g+?

@Moshe Are you on Google+?

4:49 AM
Which ones? @MTibbits
@chacha yes, but not ATM. I am away from good wifi and without much juice in my laptop. iPad doesn't do hangout yet .

@Moshe A few days back someone was complaining about his private google phonebook being publicly viewable on g+ (right down to his access codes he'd stored).

That was me.

@Moshe What is your last name so I can add you

@Moshe I see. So is it still visible?

or email

4:50 AM
I hung out with Johnathan McPhie today, a googled involved with privacy and I reported it.
Berman
I can see it in my web app but others can't, from what I understand.

how do you know how many invitations you have?

It's only on the mobile web app. Desktop is fine.
If you can invite, you'll see it on the right side under the mobile app ad. I don't know that there is a hard limit ATM.

all of sudden the swarms of us with out g+ start drooling... (me included)

Well they seem to be enabling invites every 20 hours or so. Like once every two days maybe.
Hang in there and you will get one. I got mine from @jcolebrand.

I don't even see a mobile app ad. just people and circles

4:53 AM
Accepted but not upvoted ... assholes

Lulz @jcole

where @?

I know right?

I'm finding it funny to remember all these people and try to categorize them..

4:54 AM
@Rebecca on the right panel, of the stream screen, I think. Or on your home page when you click on your profile.

@Chacha102 I just do them as I come to them. There's no way I would do all 250 people in my address book

@chacha I have one for all g+ folks and one for irl and that's it for now. I do use the defaults though. (well, a few more, nut I'm not into categories thing just yet)

Oh. Gee. Silly me for looking at the "find and invite" page

Sorry rebecca :-(

I've got Friends, Family, Following, Work, Internet Acquaintances, News Outlets, Real Life Acquaintances, StackOverflow, Startups, Work Acquaintances
that pretty much sums up everyone

4:57 AM
@Rebecca might I nag you about the Apple.SE swag that I was emailed about several weeks ago? Just confirming that 6-8 weeks applies here.

I was on the top two pages of apple.SE.
(should still be)

Got an email linking to a google doc. That wasn't a phishing scam, right? SE did give sways for top users, right?

4:59 AM
Wait, there's invites @RebeccaChernoff ?
Or is that just the name of the page?

So I suppose I just wait.

Crap. Will the cross-validated swag take 4-6 weeks?
I'm moving from State College to DC in 3 weeks.

Wait, what was that a yes to?

<-- is wondering the same thing.

When did I get that email... ?

5:04 AM
Mine came for [cv] on June 21st, but it sat buried in spam until July 3rd when I found it and responded.
@Moshe grep swag *.email

I'm on iPad one, so, good ol search...

@jcolebrand I figured invites would be on the Circles page where it said "find and invite".

@RebeccaChernoff oooooh, I missed that
Also, word of advice: don't say "iPad" on twitter

Are invites on now?

? Does anyone have any extra invites?

5:09 AM
@MTibbits I have invites for gmail and wave
does that count?

@jcolebrand I don't know. I'm on gmail == tibbits (at) gmail

@jcolebrand I saw a Tweet linking to the announcement of open beta Wave May 2010 this week. Made me smile

But i'm not on google+ yet..

wants his Apple.SE tee

And yes, Google+ has Keyboard Shortcuts preloaded

5:18 AM
Thanx @jcolebrand! So it sends me to the same link and says not accepting new users at this time. I click 'Keep Me Posted' and am rewarded with 'Internal Server Error 500'. Doh. Thanks anyways!!

I try

you did. thx. :O)

Trying out Google Chrome's experimental bar hiding
Also, the new new tab page is nice

@YiJiang (also @TimStone) Just for the record, not everything that's broken in the JavaScript is my fault :)
almost, but not all

don't believe him, he's lying!

5:21 AM
/r/wheelofblame

I gotta say, the extra browsing room is very nice

@Moshe It is welded on ;)
It's official, the wheel has spoken, it's radp's fault

the only thing I wish is that the google chrome new tab page would display more options

Yep.

I also really want Google Plus to have an option for all external/inter-google pages to go to a new tab

5:25 AM
Except, +jcolebrand, I got +Balpha here.

that way I can pin it in chrome and it can stay there

@balpha, would my answer here be impossible to implement in the backend?

Are we now switching @ for +?

@MTibbits Impossible? No. Improbable? Very. We want people to write good questions in the first place, not spoonfeed them bit by bit until we think it's answerable.

@balpha Makes sense. Thanks for the insight. Just wanting to keep some from auto-posting 'logcat' or 'post a stack trace'...

5:34 AM
In a hangout with Ben Parr

5:48 AM
However, I will be asleep. Night all.

hmm, google+ seems to randomly? pick to show my education as my tagline when people hover over my name.

@RebeccaChernoff It is the topmost job you have listed as far as I know..

I have 2 jobs filled in. When I hover over my name, I see my education.

I just complained about that. There isn't anything I can do to make sure the correct information is displayed...

Unless it is showing me something different than y'all see

6:05 AM
it shows you as 'StackOverflow'
There is a caching issue as well..

lol I don't have SO anywhere on my page that I see.

@balpha Hey, I don't think I've blamed you for anything recently. :P
We all know things are @RebeccaChernoff's fault until proven otherwise anyway.
The Wheel told us so.

not my fault

@TimStone Are you on G++?

I am not

6:09 AM
BOOOOOOOOOOOO!
I need more people to add to my StackOverflow Circle

I think I'm still missing the point. Maybe it's because most of the people I know are on Facebook and Twitter and I can't invite them to Google+. (:

Yeah, that was why I didn't make much of an effort to get an invite, heh.

Fortunately I'm friends with the more hip crowd...

lol, ouch q:

Oh wow, it's only 2:20?
Hmm..

6:21 AM
Wait... the person who writes XKCD is female?
that sounded wrong, but yeah
just really surprises me..
even on the About page it says "I'm this guy..."
bah... now I'm confused..

{{Infobox comics creator | name = Randall Munroe | image = Randall_Munroe_ducks.JPG | imagesize = 150 | caption = Randall Munroe | alt = Randall Munroe balancing a stack of rubber duckies on a diner table. | birth_name = Randall Patrick Munroe | birth_date = | birth_place = Easton, Pennsylvania, USA | death_date = | death_place = | nationality = American | area = Pen and pencilWebcomics | cartoonist = | write = | art = | pencil = | ink = | edit = | publish ...
He looks pretty non-female to me, but :P

grrr...
Google+ commentors are confusing me
He wrote this awesome post against publicly displaying the Male/Female option, and then someone thought he was a female and that got me thinking he was...
stupid internet..
Someone is trying to argue Gender should be a text box to allow people to describe themselves..
I'm more of the notion of: if you need it for system purposes, make it a dropdown and don't require it to be public, or if you don't need it internally, just don't have it

7:11 AM
General practice? When comments go off on a mild tangent, should the posters eventually delete them, or should they be left there for the benefit of others?
If I include @LanceRoberts here, & he isn't in chat, will he get a notice, or is that a mod privilege?

7:25 AM
So I guess that's a no about notifying Lance.... Good Night. :O)

2 hours later…

That largely depends on what you're reading, I guess :P

@Rebecca, @chacha, there are a bunch of Googlers doing hangouts several times daily. I'd suggest getting in there and mentioning it to them.

@Moshe That's an issue too. I can't always see when hangouts are going on
I'd love for Google to make it really blatantly obvious..
I'm following the creator of Google+, and another guy working on gathering feedback

2:38 PM
Well, hangouts are not all shown in one place for what is presumably privacy reasons. However, when you click on the button to start a new hangout, you will also see the hangouts which you can join.
Who is the creator of Google Plus?

@Chacha102 Holy F that's an awesome answer...

Who here isn't on Google+?

I'm not.. no invite.

@Chacha102 Nope. /stares

> “I could end the deficit in 5 minutes. You just pass a law that says that anytime there is a deficit of more than 3% of GDP all sitting members of congress are ineligible for reelection.”

I'm not. And, for once, I don't care.

@chacha heh, good luck getting that passed!

3:14 PM
@Fosco @YiJiang What's your email?
I just got invites

@Chacha102 gfosco at gmail

Hmm

Anyone else want an invite?

Meh, very well. tmslft, also at gmail
Thanks

thanks, cha cha cha!

I really like Chrome with the hidden URL bar
it is only a little bit of space, but it makes a difference and puts less stuff on the screen

Q: New Team Lead - How to deal with a resentful former peer

aceintheholeI've been told that I am to be a team lead of an upcoming project. I've not ever been team lead before but the responsibilities are what you would typically expect, with revolving door of 3 to 4 other developers through the 8 or 9 months it takes to complete the project. My problem is this: one ...

code-review discussion: developers.slashdot.org/…

I find the Gigahurt dude to be a bit arrogant..

most definitely... i see his points though, along with the others.
he's not trying to force anyone else into doing something they don't want to, though...

4:09 PM
@Fosco - Just invited you in case you're not already in.
@Chacha102 - Have you added me yet?

4:39 PM
@Moshe Thanks but @Chacha102 got me in.. I think I already added you to my circles. I closed the page though, don't have time to check it out yet.

Apparently Google+ has an age restriction. I have no idea how I got in, but after I send out a bunch of invites someone IM'd me telling me that they were rejected because of their age

@Moshe I added you
Someone join a Hangout with me
just added a ton of Googlers to my Googlers circle
this is where it would be nice to not see all my circles in my main feed

4:57 PM
@YiJiang Apparently you need to be 18yo

@badpssockpuppet Apparently. I have no idea how Google knows everyone else's age though

@YiJiang It's probably in the Google profile.

I checked that, but I don't see a birthday field

They're Google, they just know o_o

holy shnikeys, I had no idea google hangouts were all about video chat!

1 hour later…

google+ killed this tavern. -1

6:30 PM
lol

lmao, I think work killed this tavern

It's Friday, why is anyone actually working? ;)

Because we didn't work all week?

Honestly, I've just been sitting here staring blankly at the screen.

Yay we have conversation again.

6:42 PM
Hooray!

I have a topic, want your opinions... of all the web games you've played, what is the genre/type-of-game that you enjoy the most??

Homeworld
Homeworld is a real-time strategy computer game released on September 28, 1999, developed by Relic Entertainment and published by Sierra Entertainment. It was the first fully three-dimensional RTS. In 2003, Relic released the source code for Homeworld. Homeworld was the beginning of a series, followed in 2000 with ' and in 2003 with Homeworld 2. Plot Beneath the scorching sands of Kharak, the Kushan people have discovered the remains of a long-forgotten titanic spaceship. Buried within the ancient remains, the secret of their lost homeworld. For thousands of years, the Kushan have surv...
After that, SimTower was always fun but needed a reboot, and SC2k was great, I didn't care for SC3k, and I forget the later versions, but wasn't really impressed. The transition from SC to SC2k was incredible tho. I loved SC2k.

sorry, i said web-games..

oh, sorry
missed something in there
so do you mean flash games then?

not necessarily... can include them though.

6:47 PM
Or would freeciv count? The one that's in the browser ...

freeciv can count.,,, thanks for the input.
@TimStone what say you?

waitasecond, I have 59 people in my circles?
that's like 100 less than I expect to have entoto

I almost have 200

@Fosco Tough question, there's no shortage. Why do you ask?

7:09 PM
Good afternoon all (from my time zone anyway). I have a question related to tag similarity which is different than tag synonyms

@demongolem Shoot.

So as an example, sometimes I tag tomcat6 and sometimes tomcat. For the tomcat6 tags, I also mean tomcat so in a sense I mean both. Should I tag a question both tomcat6 and tomcat, or just choose 1.
This can work with Python and a host of other things

Generally, always use the "generic" tag. People are more likely to have those favorited, so they'll be more likely to view your questions. If the issue really is version-specific, then use the specific one as well.

Ok yes, I am worried about followers who might follow one but not the other
I will follow that advice

7:30 PM
@ginerxryvn1
266 tweets, 0 followers, following 0 users
how does twitter not just get rid of those?

@PopularDemand Because I badly desire to make a game.

@jcolebrand Bloons Tower Defense
addicting

@BrAvadaKedavran wait, why did you post that to me as a response?
That makes no sense

accident, I meant to post to Fosco

@Fosco do one for the towers of hanoi

7:44 PM
@jcolebrand actually thats a favorite of mine...

@Fosco Tower-like games (Bloons Tower Defense) are pretty popular

@BrAvadaKedavran haven't seen that one... played lots of TD clones, and bloons though.. both good.. thanks.

8:11 PM
I just started a Hangout on Google+

You should totally hang out with Moshe

I did earlier

8:36 PM
sadly my dell inspiron ones integrated mic picks up everything from the speakers, and echos everything back to the hangout...

@Fosco Headphones.

I'm aware of the bevy of workarounds available... shouldn't need one, though.
now charging my g930 headset of doooooooom.

9:36 PM
whistles innocently

Hahah

Do you actually have access to Google+? I think I have a few invites to burn. Provided you'd even want to be there.

Yeah, I am as of earlier today.
I haven't taken a chance to poke around yet though
