@JarrodDixon That has @RebeccaChernoff's name written all over it.

1:48 AM
I get impatient waiting for bad questions to get closed, lol.

2:47 AM
@JarrodDixon Thx ;)

2 hours later…
4:26 AM
@JarrodDixon I actually had a thought ... can you do that for sure?
Or does it require manual intervention to verify a URL being asked to authenticate?
But yes, I'll let you do that for me, for sure ;)
Also, I inadvertently had one or two reversed from all the others, if you want to fix that one or two as well :p ;) ... but now, you apparently have a script, so that's cool.
@RebeccaChernoff I like being a guinea pig, since I usually understand the risks involved. q:

Sure, but I feel like there's a dangerous fine line between being a guinea pig, and letting Jarrod test on you. (;

lol, there may be, one day. So long as it doesn't involve raw electricity or solid substances, I should be ok.
I figure I'm faster than a splashing liquid, and gaseous substances will either kill everyone or no one. (;
What fun task are you working on this evening?

Uh, well I just put a new filter in my vacuum cleaner. So that was fun.

Yatta!
I'm so special to have one of these instead images.doba.com/products/2979/UH70085_1.jpg

does that mean I have to go find a picture of mine now?

4:36 AM
ha, no
I like that it doesn't have a filter that normally gets replaced, but I honestly don't know where to get the filter it does have
I dread when it looks like it needs to be replaced
I've already had belt problems with it once.

As long as I've had the vacuum, I can handle $10 at Target for a new filter.

Yeah, I don't even know where to buy mine at. (granted, I've not tried looking, so c'est la vie)

oooh, yours is nicer than mine!

5:02 AM
I have this one.

shutup
and don't tell my wife. She'll be upset

I'll keep my mouth shut. :P

ha!

Ah, about time I posted a new SO answer. Should get on that answer for Popular Demand too.

wha? Blasphemy! You? Posting on SO? !

5:08 AM
I've been lapsing lately, heh.

you and me both

Damn work. ;)

stackexchange.com/users/… <-- a fairly steady curve nonetheless
@TimStone I know right

My graph is a bit less happy: stackexchange.com/users/…

So in other news ... as if this were passable as news ... I saw "I am Number Four" tonight and I'm not sure if I'm pissed at the directorial staff/producers, or if I really liked the movie. The plot was imaginative if a trite replay on old plots, and was really oddly done at times. Idk, I guess I've gotten to the point where I want to see things really well developed and the story really well told.

5:11 AM
hello

@TimStone yeah, but you're a thousand ahead of me so :p

I should be at 15K, if I had kept with my initial rate.
@OctavianDamiean 'Ello
@jcolebrand Hmm, so it's worth watching?

@TimStone I'ld say about 80% worth watching, yes.
If you're planning on watching I won't say anything else until you tell me you've seen it.

Yeah, I suppose I'll give it a look.

@TimStone for as long as I've had my account, I should be at 10k+

5:17 AM
I have a feeling I'll never get to 10k, I'm stuck at ~7k

The trick is to keep pressing ahead and quit worrying about rep. Just answer questions for the sake of answering questions, and try to do the very best job you can.
I didn't think I was gonna get to 2k on dba.SE, but here I sit 17 points away.

Anyone notice the Cakephp SO type clone?

and that's only been ~ 3 months

@xiaohouzi79 no, but that wouldn't surprise me

5:23 AM
Was wondering if anyone was aware if it was a SE type rebranding, it's so similar
The community fracturing filled me with momentary rage

Wow, that's a horrible clone

Agreed, but the only reason I can see for wanting to do it is to get a few ad-clicks
They would have to be aware that SO exists and already has a decent repository of Cake questions
Or else it's a just because we can

So you're new at this aren't you?
I can tell by your meta rep that this is your first day :p

Q: Stack Overflow clones

AndrijaDoes anyone know interesting clones of the SO website model? Please list them here.

Just because someone uses the same format, that doesn't mean anything. Have you seen the number of ads on that site?

Yes, I was just looking at that Q 1 minute ago and it reminded me of Cake because I went there about a week ago

AND!!! It looks like they only focus on Cake PHP

5:28 AM
Good Morning

My concern is not really about the copying, just that it is a poor way to build community when one already exists

So, since we don't have a cake stack specifically (it would generally belong on SO) then I don't even see the room to whine abou tit.
Ah, but does such a community really exist?
Just because they can ask and answer on SO, it feels like they would be lost in a sea of other Qs (which they would)
but I see the time has already slipped away to much later than I should have let it. I need to try and rest. Until the morrow.

I don't know if 4000+ questions counts, I always come to SO first to look for reliable cake answers
Just think it would be a horrible trend if every community out there decided to copy SO and launch there own mini sites

damn those users asking for magic stackoverflow.com/questions/6196502/… (cc @TimStone)

Heh :P

don't need no upvotes, just wanted you to see the retardedness.

@ÓlafurWaage Is it OK to downvote, then? Cause, really, global variable are considered bad practice :)

Perhaps you could, eh, you know, emphasize a bit more that this is a negative example?
Like, you know, giant 30pt heading that says: THIS IS ONLY AN EXAMPLE DO NOT USE THIS OR YOU WILL ROT IN HELL?

I should post a blog about all the bad things people can do while programming and tell them it's a good thing. Perhaps that is the issue, they read things backwards.

Up-arrow editing now works for more than just the last message. I think the arrow key behavior is pretty non-disturbing, let me know if you disagree or see issues.

@ÓlafurWaage You know it is said that a teacher should never highlight how not to do something because students tend to learn the bad example instead of the good one :)
one of my teachers told me of course :)

Can we do HTTPS request through Android ?

Now if only there was a site were you can find out about programming stuff

And if only there was a site that does search well, since it was probably asked many times.

bbb .. but those sites take ages to present the information because I have to read and understand everything, that means I'd have to do all that myself /sarcasm

i am doing that, i asked here b'cos i was in hurry, sorry :|

1:22 PM
Maybe the problem is you miss spelled b'cos...
Don't you know it is spelled b'cuz

I know that, i was again in hurry :)

@wanted - first result for "https in android" on google returned this: stackoverflow.com/questions/995514/https-connection-android
Why exactly could you not type the same thing into google?

@Hogan Because that's too obvious?

it might get you in trouble :P

@GeorgeMarian Well @wanted seems to be part of the "literal net" so when I mocked his argot he did not get it -- figured I might as well just be literal. I'm still wondering about his "knowing" that b'cos is spelled b'cuz.

1:40 PM
is back again
is it so b'cos is incorrect and b'cuz is correct?

It's because neither is correct.

both are an invention of the SMS generation

that i know what is the short form of because :)

@ManjotSingh There is no short form.

i saw people usually use "coz" or "cos" also

1:45 PM
SMS generation

Granted, that depends on how puritanical you want to be about language. However, in this case, I prefer to be quite puritanical.

just because one guy jumps off a roof doesn't mean that everyone should :)

Heh. Good point.

as we all know time is money and public saving their time by short forms

It's one thing to use short forms like that when you're typing on a tiny keyboard. I accept such atrocities in SMS. However, when you have a full-fledged keyboard at your disposal, it's just lazy.

1:47 PM
@ManjotSingh by spelling things incorrectly? I don't see the time profit

hi guys

@OctavianDamiean people know this short form when someone is getting the meaning what he is writing then i think that there would not be any issue:)
hi

doesn't like the short form nor the SMS generation

@ManjotSingh If you had been too lazy to correct the error in that message, there certainly would have been an issue understanding your point.

1:50 PM
@GeorgeMarian ya George

@GeorgeMarian but i got what he was typing because he was in hurry he used short form

@Damodar you should write his name at least three times so he definitely knows that you are talking to him.

In my experience, it's not done because people are in a hurry. It's done because people are lazy. It does not take that much longer to spell out "because."

@OctavianDamiean r u kidding at me :(

it may be his style :)

1:54 PM
Language/communication shouldn't be stylish.
It should be effective.

and correct

but public is getting didnt you what he meant?

@GeorgeMarian and grametically perfect

nothing is perfect

@OctavianDamiean u is MR. PERFECT :)

1:55 PM
definitely not

i got what he meant even i am not as strong in English as i am "INDIAN"

@OctavianDamiean he he he .....

I'm willing to accept close-enough for grammar and even spelling. However, I'm not willing to accept lazy and/or "stylish" contractions.

@ManjotSingh hey dnt mention nation dude.. its guys mistake who not spelled the word properly.. so nation cannt do anything for that. there may people in india who can talk english every fluently. Also ur former Prime Minister P.V. Narsimha Rao who can talk 14 laguages very fluently , he is an indian and he is from my state Andhra Pradesh

@GeorgeMarian might be you are strong in English as its in your habit people here used speak Hindi(Indian Language) here in India

Q: Whats the syntax mistake in the Below python code.

RoyalReddycount =10; d=0; while d < count: d=d+1 print(d) it is giving me an error "IndentationError: expected an indented block"

wouldn't this be a cadidate for closing?
too localized?

@ManjotSingh I understand that. What's your point? That doesn't excuse contractions like "b'cos."
That actually shows a higher level of knowledge of the language/culture than using the correct spelling.

@ManjotSingh dnt look fro sympathy from others....

Making a spelling error, because you don't know any better, is a totally different situation.

try to improve. Accept your mistake. Dnt mention nation on behalf of ur mistake

Precisely.
I'm not speaking out against people making errors. I accept that. Try as I may, I'm not perfect and never will be.
However, it doesn't stop me from putting in the effort to improve.

2:02 PM
no one is perfect...

@Damodar i dont think that there is any mistake in typing "b'cos" if you will check your message you did three mistakes in your previous message infact you used "dnt"

@ManjotSingh Willingly using "b'cos" instead of the correct spelling (for whatever reason) is not the same as typo or spelling mistake.

@GeorgeMarian it is just a discussion dont be personel:)

ya to make it small, i typed like that. If it is a mistake , i will correct it

Who said I'm taking this personally? I'm just making my point.

2:04 PM
@ManjotSingh But never mention nation for the faults of us

@Damodar i am not saying you are not correct i am saying people have an habit of using short forms

@ManjotSingh And, I'm saying that habit is a bad one. :)

@GeorgeMarian ya i know....i am also just making my point.

ok guys its time to leave ... have a nice day... gud night

@Damodar bye

2:06 PM
@Damodar g'night

look you are also using short forms you can also use Good Night instead of using gud or g' night

Q: Is constructing a GUI using Javascript like flying to China to buy fried rice?

YubbaWhen I compare the complexity of Javascript-based GUIs to traditional GUIs based on wxwidgets, GTK+ or whatever else, I see a huge increase in the complexity for Javascript GUIs, even when using extjs or some other framework. Why does anyone tolerate this? Why don't browser makers simply make ...

@ManjotSingh u should be lawyer instead software engineer
:) .... just kidding never mind

lol

2:10 PM
I use some short forms. I'll admit that. However, g'night is more accepted than b'cos. More importantly, if I were typing a full sentence, I would use "good night." I used the short form for expediency, when I thought it was actually worth it.

@GeorgeMarian dont mind i was just discussing even i try to write correct and ha i am not at all lazy and i am too against of this type of style

Granted, that's a judgement call which may be up for debate.
I don't mind. I should have become a lawyer, too. :)

lol

@PopularDemand LOL

i am not a lawyer for your kind information

2:15 PM
Awww... someone got butt-hurt and decided to go nuts with the down-votes.

@Fosco hehe, any suspects?

@ManjotSingh there is one reason why I'd say that g'night is valid and b'cos isn't. g'night is a contraction of two words whereas b'cos is just one single word.

heh Death by a thousand cuts? ;)

lol... @Trufa no idea.
I do have a tendency to piss some people off though.

@Fosco awwww

2:18 PM
I'm sure the system will correct itself, I don't need the rep :)

@Fosco you are not the only one ;)

@OctavianDamiean Yeah. That's the basic reason it's more acceptable. However, even then many English teachers hate contractions, such as "it's."

@Fosco any recent (explained) downvotes done by you?

@OctavianDamiean i know that much english i am not at all weak in english as such

Granted, "it's" has a more specific problem than just being a contraction of two words.

2:19 PM
@Trufa Yeah, definitely... I downvote, vote to close, and ridicule all too often.

@Fosco yeah, I think it is ok to post on meta though

Nah, I'll let it be.. thanks though :)
gotta run...

@GeorgeMarian is it so?

@GeorgeMarian exactly but don't is a valid contraction. :)

I'm not sure what you're asking.

2:21 PM
probably not in Oxford but I think everywhere else it is :p

This discussion can go on forever. I have had some English teachers that hated "don't" as well. :)

@GeorgeMarian did't,i'd,i'll etc all are valid

did't is not valid

yawns

didn't
@TimStone dont yawn publically

2:23 PM
@OctavianDamiean Right, it's a question of how strict you want to be. Actually, Oxford's is supposed to document usage. It's not supposed to be a guardian of correct English.

Alright, I have to ask, why not? :P

may Octavian will explain it :)

@ManjotSingh Correct. One of the arguments against "it's" is that it seems possessive. Because of that contraction, the correct way to say that something belong to "it" is to use "its." The issue is that it makes the rules more complicated.
Granted, you have a typo in there. It's "didn't." :)

@GeorgeMarian my teacher didn't have much knowledge that's why i think they didn't correct my mistakes

That's certainly possible. Now, it's your responsibility. :)

2:27 PM
:)

It would be great to have the chat system kick people every time they start a sentence with @all

i saw Octavian neither allowed to user ping directly nor allow them to type @all
is there any issue with typing @all

well yes, I will complain if someone pings me in every single line they write, of course. However I don't forbid anyone to do it.

and when user type @all then

2:32 PM
then I come here and rant about it ;)

so where is the issue with typing @all

Well, it's somewhat redundant. If I want to hear a noise for every message I can have that enabled.

it is useless and shows that people just don't understand the chat system

neither user disturbing anyone

Also, it's granted that messages not addressing someone specifically are intended for everyone.

2:34 PM
that -^

they might be beginner or there must be rule for each and everything

it's not rules, it's common sense

I was about to say

bingo

lol

2:35 PM
you don't go to a meeting and keep saying "All I want x y z"
also, if you're in a conversation with John Doe, you don't keep saying John Doe I did this, John Doe I did that, blah blah

but at the beginning only people write @all

which doesn't makes sense

@Sathya Well, to be fair, chat's reply button auto-inserts names.

user dont allowed to ping directly to particular user nor he is allowed to write @all

@PopularDemand yes but you don't use it on every line when talking to someone

2:39 PM
@OctavianDamiean Actually, I usually do. Keeps track of which message, specifically, is being replied to.

@ManjotSingh that is just not true, I don't ask people not to do it I just ask people to think before doing it
@PopularDemand Like this?
@PopularDemand Do you think it makes sense=?
@PopularDemand I don't
@PopularDemand It is rather annoying
see what I mean?

@OctavianDamiean Once is enough per group of messages. But if there are five people involved, and you want to target one, it does make sense.

i agree:)

definitely, but we are discussion my example ;)

gotta run
g'night
bye

2:41 PM
@OctavianDamiean Why? That's not the case I'm referring to. I guess I'm usually here when it's busier.

we are talking about this behavior

@OctavianDamiean Who?

Sathya, Reno, ManjotSingh and me
there was even a picture describing it

Oh... one of those people is on my block list, so I didn't get the full context.

oh ok :)

2:44 PM
Apologies for what must have seemed like an odd tangent.

no worries

3:00 PM
The length of this power failure is beginning to worry me.

@mootinator I've had 5 power failures in a week, but they lasted about half a second each

I don't know how long this one is, but I have < 50% battery life left.
Mind you that's my own fault for letting it drain completely last night, so it wasn't fully charged.

when does the suggested questions kick in?

@Sathya I don't understand what you're asking.

@PopularDemand when you ask a question, besides the related questions, recently another list of similar questions come up right, based on question body content & tags ?

@PopularDemand Oh, you're serious? I think he just means that's how many records are in each. But I laughed anyway. ;)

Ok, who here does PHP?

what is this peee-hech-pee

@TimStone Yeah, I am. I know it sounds silly, but I can't think of any other meaning he could possibly be attempting to convey.

@jcolebrand I still remember that vaguely :P
I used a beta site.

wtf? Do you read english?

3:29 PM
Oy.

So nobody on the PHP thing eh?
I suppose I should go to the room for that and ask them, eh?

3:50 PM
@jcolebrand what do you need with PHP? I have used it a few times before.

@Moshe only what I said in my post. I need a rudimentary webservice

Hrm... You don't want to echo out the brackets each time. Sounds like a simple function would do, no? Unless I'm missing the question.

@Moshe Josh and I keep a running skype window open. I would've bugged him, but he's got bigger fish to fry.
But thanks for trying to help ;)
@Moshe I don't write PHP

Ah ok. If you don't have it done by the time I get to the office, ping me.
I did try. Now that y'all mention it, I should add you two to my skype.
:-)
What should SoapEncode("myString") return?

hellifiknow

3:57 PM
Well, you are defining that no?
Yea, I'm missing something.
What do you pass into the service and what do you want back. I'm just looking for an example.

There's a SOAP extension, if you actually want SOAP. I've never used it though.

Yeah, I want a whole PHP webserivce
I want a basic PHP webservice that uses SOAP to transmit data to me.
I can fill in the holes once I have it up

don't get SOAP in your eyes... use JSON :)
echo json_encode($phpvariableorarrayorobject);
$something = array("myfield" => "myvalue"); echo json_encode($something);

4:16 PM
Not my choice, SOAP is forced upon me

oh well, so is torture i guess ;)

4:34 PM
SOAP in one's mouth must be painful with all of those brackets.

btw @Moshe where's @TheOyNotFoundException? Seems he hasn't been in here for about a month?

@Sathya he has had a few unfortunate circumstances arise which are of a personal nature and he shall return when he is able.

@jcolebrand ah.

Indeed.
holy fecking A, is it too much to ask my coworkers to read twenty words consecutively?
