Also, yes, I'm certain that unless you put references to final strings in a nested class it will disappear after you exit scope. Else if you do that other thing it still has to mangle a reference to the thing. :p see how smart I am ;)
Tim hit the nail on the head, the inner block had to make a place, so to speak, for the externally defined final string. Why the gc didn't clear scoped variables I still don't understand, cos you already exited the scope.
All I'm saying is that I followed what it does perfectly from the conversation that happened here. I don't like what the compiler did, but I grok why it does what it does.
Yeah, things that can be directly added to the constant pool are directly added to the constant pool. Failing that, a synthetic field is created on the inner class.
@PopularDemand For completeness by the way, to populate the synthetic field in the case of a non-compile-time-constant outer scope local variable, the compiler actually modifies the signature of the constructor you use, and frontloads the outer this and any referenced scoped variables.

@Moshe I see you do have quite the graphic skills with red filled rectangles... with drop shadow. However, they lack... soul. Could you change them to free handed circles.

@Mvy Heh. That's likely the reason it's still in beta. The only parameter which isn't as good as it should be is the questions per day.
@Mvy Probably be not. If there isn't enough interest to make a good site, then so be it. However, I think the problem has been an issue of getting attention to the site. None of the mods has a huge web presence, so our efforts have had limited impact.
