6:00 PM
here we go
front page of hacker news and reddit once again, climbing positions, over 100 clicks in 10 minutes... let's get a gold badge today
and there it is, gold badge
1000 hits in ~15 minutes

6:15 PM
I see I'm going to have to sign up to hacker news and/or reddit if I want to get these badges. Posting to my Twitter followers just doesn't cut it ;)

I feel like a marketer now. I guess that's why SitePoint pays me to edit their marketing books.
this coffee I made tastes terrible
:adds lots of sugar to cover it up:

Q: C# double to real

user571874how to make the conversion after number of 0.23 by 0.23 I received, not 0.23999999948 conversion do so: public static byte[] Double2Real48(double d) { byte[] r48 = new byte[6]; byte[] da = BitConverter.GetBytes(d); for (int i = 0; i < r48.Length; i...

Not again - don't they teach this any more?

I was really angry because my algorithm to check if a number was prime was not working, it kept saying, "98 is not prime".
Now I'm not so angry with my algorithm any more.

@ChrisF sigh

@Trufa lol

6:28 PM
@DanGrossman Wheres the bug? The bug is in your brain!

You should've rewritten the code to say "98 is not prime BECAUSE __________"

@DanGrossman heheheheheheheheh
@DanGrossman now I cant stop laughing!
In my defense I think I'm still drunk
I'm gonna get a CUI
!!!

lol
sounds fun

god damn

@ChrisF to be honest if he converts 0.23 to 0.2399999 there's something completely wrong

6:32 PM
this is still the hottest question

Q: What is this thing called?

Portman(Original title: "WTF is this thing called?") I have a couple of networking components in my rack that take giant AC adapters ("power bricks") that don't fit neatly into my rackmount PDU. I have one "thingy" that is shown below, and I need to buy a few more. But I have no idea what I'm searchi...

81 up-votes!!

@badp I didn't notice that!

@ChrisF I actually can't understand what he's trying to do

That's a great question, I love the high quality drawing with photoshopped sticky note

first it sounds like he has trouble calculating .23×.23

I just read the title and the first line

6:33 PM
then he seems to compare .23 with .2399999999

I'm goona start a post

then he posts a method called Double2Real48

@ChrisF Heh, apparently I did too. Caffeine time :P

What is this called???

@Trufa Rubber duck.

6:34 PM
@badp i'll post it in serverfault just in case

What's this called?

@DanGrossman ohh that is nothing
see:
the damn thing is huge
!!
(look at the boats around it)

@DanGrossman is there any particular reason why you keep linking to the kind of questions Stack Overflow no longer accepts?
Trying hard to get them deleted or something?

@badp Because they're the kind that those communities would find interesting
"How do you close a TCP socket" provokes no discussion

@DanGrossman Yeah, well, but then people will post more like those and see them closed mercilessly...

6:40 PM
That's a problem of SO's own creation

Yeah, one of the solutions is deleting those questions.

They're the top voted questions on SO, not hard to find, if SO doesn't want them move them to programmers or something

@badp I'm glad you said "deleting" ;)

@ChrisF Most of those are already protected and/or closed and/or locked and/or cages and/or drowned...

@badp He was just happy you didn't want to migrate them, I think :P

6:42 PM
@TimStone eh. I tried proposing migrations to Programmers in the past and got flamed for that.
so I'll no longer propose that a solution until I understand what is it that Programmers wants exactly :)

I'm unsure on that myself, so. ;)

I just don't see the point in migrating old questions to another site - especially if they're a) closed or b) have an accepted answer.

@ChrisF That's a point against deleting too.

The other problem with these sort of question is that they are "list of X" questions which are off topic.
@badp true, but I'd rather that they were deleted - there's a good chance that the question was reasked on Programmers' anyway

anyway I think that questions from 2008 are a pretty weak starting point for discussions.
What can be said today that wasn't said then?

6:46 PM
Uhm
1,038 things in a day apparently

@DanGrossman I'm sure they all read the 14 pages of answers and all said original and new stuff
3

I'm sure the SO answers don't include epic responses such as this thread

@DanGrossman That's called a feature.

WTF....
I just got a voice mail from a customer saying "I bought some advertising from you and it's working great, and I want to buy more, but I can't find your website. Can you call me back and tell me what your website was?"
He called my personal cell phone, which is not listed on any of my websites or my PayPal account, which is how he paid... How did he get my phone number without knowing my website?

O_o

6:58 PM
My phone IS in some domain WHOIS records, but if he had those he'd know the website URL already

@DanGrossman (mystery theme playing) Who cares? How can you get that answer with program?

:confused:

@DanGrossman I was recently working on looking up half brothers. It was, to say the least, frustrating. So I plunked down about $300 to get some databases.
@DanGrossman in those were lots of people who went to 'ilostmycontacts.com' or similar.
Unfortunately, you can't determine if the person you are now sharing with is an idiot.
and you can't count on truth in privacy policies. It's like getting fined $50 for a violation when you made $50k

You don't have a stalker, you just have a 'resourceful' user :)
Turn the tables and realize said user likely has money to spend ;)
(or knows how bittorrent works)

7:10 PM
I'll get back to him, just was strange getting that call on that line

Privacy is something that all of us, mostly unwittingly gave up last year.
If (idiot potential contact) has you in his (idiot phone), your details will be shared, eventually.
Why? Because Google leads them to really bad ideas in their top 10 :)
Facebook and human nature takes care of the rest.

Wow
I just put cartridges in the printer

congrats?

golf claps I expect there's more to the story. :P

@badp And then ...

7:20 PM
then it said "Please wait. First time setup: 4:32"
and it started doing all kinds of sinister mechanical sounds
I fully expected it to extend mechanical arms at some point
...and then the power unit failed.
I'm trying a different plug now.

Erm...

Dig a hole and bury it NOW. It has become sentient

I think this printer will get returned.

Are you sure it doesn't double as a food processor?

7:24 PM
Oh no, don't return it! That's what they WANT.. Smash and bury it, your printer is sentient.

It'll take all of the information it's gathered from you back to the Collective!

Woo, over +300 rep today so far

I'm avoiding work, if it isn't obvious

I'm...not sure if I have specific work to do, for once. It's kind of disturbing. o_o
Finally time to fix up the userscripts, I suppose.

I do, I just don't want to do it. I can still meet the deadline doing it tomorrow.

7:28 PM
@TimPost I am too ... I have some specific queries I need to work on ..

I finally made those two frameworks play nice, victory is mine! Mwuahaha.

I think it's time for a job change.

coughs Now, to make Chrome behave..

:sad about not being able to upvote, downvote, close vote on anything for 4 more hours:

I have yet to make Chrome behave
Chrome, by design, does not behave.

7:31 PM
Heh :P

@TimPost why do you say that?

I think we're all supposed to start screaming about standards, but in reality, we just use another browser.

@TimPost AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

@TimPost I do both, does that make me a good or bad web dev?

@TimStone Subject-Mechanically-Inept-Assign-For-Low-Responsibility-Work
I think I glanced those words on the display while I packed it back in

7:34 PM
Hahah :P

@drachenstern I don't know. I work mostly on kernels and hypervsors

Is it a bad thing that I enjoy watching VH1 "I love the __________" (in this case the-best-of the-90's)

@drachenstern I'm kind of fond of goear.com

<script>
jQuery.fn.classes = (function() {
    return this.className.split(/\s/g);
});
</script>

@Nyuszika7H how does a classname have spaces?
Are you codebowling?

7:39 PM
@drachenstern You can have multiple CSS classes: <p class='foo bar'>

I would say that 90% of my browsing is in SE sites. It's hard to get me out of my editor :)

Ohhh, my bad. I read that as member classes :\ /facepalm

Once in a while I fire up my RSS reader

$('#input').keyup(function(event) {
    if (event.which == 13 && !e.shiftKey) {
        this.value = this.value.replace(/^\/facepalm/, '!i297.photobucket.com/albums/mm232/mintkiller/facepalm.jpg');
    }
});
It can be done with an userscript, and you don't even need to include jQuery, as SE sites are using jQuery.

There's a limit per site on anonymous edits isn't there?

7:53 PM
@drachenstern IDK.

Q: Which programming language is best in field of BIOTECHNOLOGY?

user604667WELL I TALKED TO MY PEERS ABOUT THIS BUT THEY ALL ARE NOT VERY SURE SOME ARE TELLING THAT PYTHON,OPEN CL,....? SO I M TOTALLY CONFUSED,I AM PURSUING BTECH BIOTECHNOLOGY . PLEASE SUGGEST ME Which programming language is best in field of BIOTECHNOLOGY????

I'm pretty sure there's a 10edits per site limit

@drachenstern Per user?

@Nyuszika7H yes

Gawd, someone vote to close that thing

7:55 PM
@drachenstern trying that

Most of the time mods approve them pretty quickly, but seeing as how the only mods on dba.SE are the SE team, I'm all out of edit slots :p

It seems that anons can't edit now!

@DanGrossman I voted to move it to P.SE as it's a subjective question with some good potential answers.
It may be too subjective even for them, however, so let's see.

too late.

durn you all :p
we could've migrated it

7:57 PM
you wanted to close it as argumentative, @drachenstern. At least that's what SO tells me.
(I don't like the way that data is reported)

@MichaelPetrotta no, I voted for P.SE
@MichaelPetrotta I concur.

@MichaelPetrotta Yeah, there were three different camps on that one.
Someone voted NaRQ I think >_>
@drachenstern Capital letters in your link for emphasis? ;)

>.>
I really don't know, just felt like it

...Very well then, hahah.

The problem with reorganizing your iPhone apps, moving folders around, trying apps to remind yourself what they do, is that some random app will talk to you an hour later and scare the crap out of you.

8:01 PM
Hm? There's only 1 suggested edit on dba
NOW THERE ARE ZERO

gasps

well then I couldn't edit a question, so what's up with that?

hmm. new 10k tools page layout on SO.

Which question were you editing?

8:03 PM
you did something didn't you rchern?
I wasn't editing, the link just wasn't there

You can't edit ones that have a pending edit already.

Maybe you were trying to edit the one I just approved?

@RebeccaChernoff You should really be renamed to rchern! :P

that must be it

8:04 PM
"Questions with extreme votes"

If you refresh is there an edit link now?

@RebeccaChernoff me?

@RebeccaChernoff was it about "LIKE"?
There is now, yes, and an approved edit.

does it look different now? (:

Ok, consider me edumacated once again

8:06 PM
@RebeccaChernoff No, I can't see it as an anon, but I can edit it using stackoverflow.com/posts/post-id/edit

puts a star on @drachenstern's edumacation chart

@Nyuszika7H, why would I change to rchern?

Yatta!

@RebeccaChernoff It sounds better. :)

@RebeccaChernoff because he's new here and doesn't know? Because he prefers typing five characters to typing three and pressing tab? Because it would annoy people?

8:06 PM
@Nyuszika7H Huh? What are you talking about?

@RebeccaChernoff There's no edit link for anonymous users on that post at the moment.

On what post? That link isn't a real link.

There wasn't a few days ago when I looked either. Any random SO question has no edit link if you're not logged in.

@RebeccaChernoff Sorry, the post you approved the edit on just now.

I feel like I'm having a conversation with @drachenstern about edits and someone else is having a conversation with me but I don't know it.

8:08 PM
Everyone is having a conversation with everyone

@RebeccaChernoff I wasn't aware we were still talking about edits :\

@RebeccaChernoff: there is medication to help with that.

@Nyuszika7H The reason there's no link is because the post isn't 12 hours old.
> Anonymous users can suggest edits to any post more than 12 hours old

@drachenstern, we aren't anymore, but we were.

@RebeccaChernoff well yes we were, but I thought we finished that when I said I was edumacated :\
I'm going back to reading dba.SE questions

8:09 PM
Here I have an idea.
</conversation>
move along |:

Userscript!

@Rebecca: and just press "Submit". Like you said, clears them all out.

8 edit proposals so far – I'm getting a captcha on every second edit

SO is pretty sure you're a bot
If you fail the CAPTCHA it'll try to hack you and assimilate you into the infrastructure

8:15 PM
@DanGrossman It's Bicycles.SE, not SO :P
11 edit proposals so far

@Nyuszika7H are you checking to see if a mod is marking them corrected for you?

@drachenstern nope
16 edit proposals and counting…
Is there any limit?
Counting… 21 edit proposals.

...Are you making constructive edits, or are you just spamming the edit queue?

@TimStone I'm testing how many I can do (as anonymous). Appending <p></p> every time. But I'm tired doing this, so I'll stop there.

That's not really an answer to my question..

8:35 PM
@Nyuszika7H, you're going through and adding stupid edits? Um, stop?

@RebeccaChernoff already stopped :) and sorry…

@Nyuszika7H - what were you trying to achieve with your edit here:

I was too late, but someone else rejected it.

Q: Can I make it so that a fanfare plays when my code compiles in Eclipse (Java)?

Gary OakI always feel so pleased when my code compiles and I've always dreamed of the Final Fantasy VII victory theme or Zelda treasure chest theme playing along with the successful compilation. I've only been programming for two weeks (unless you include my 8 years of HTML on Neopets). Please tell me ...

I'd upvote that if I could
Who marked that as off-topic?

No idea, I was wondering the same thing.

> What kind of questions can I ask here? ...software tools commonly used by programmers

8:49 PM
I wanted "noise or pointless" so "off topic" was the closest :)

I'm subtracting 20k rep from you

I feel it's kind of a silly question, but it is asking about adding some sort of post-compile hook to Eclipse. Granted, even that is a silly question, seeing as how Eclipse automatically compiles individual files on save unless told otherwise...but.

Ya know, if it gets closed there's always VtR

:hasn't slept since thursday:

Ok, I think I'm going to have to climb up to 20k. New unlocks waiting.

I'll have you there in 4 days in exchange for a cheesesteak, a spicy tuna roll, and a 20 dollar bill

20K users can edit tag wikis even if they're not in the top 20 or have the bronze badge

Jeff's been randomly giving new stuff to 20k users, no idea why he suddenly latched onto 20k

@drachenstern: approve/deny edits immediately.

@MichaelPetrotta I thought it was 2 users regardless on SO

that one?

@drachenstern: yep, that's the one.

@MichaelPetrotta I could be wrong, but last time I approved some edits I thought it still said that someone else needed to approve it

@ChrisF no I can do 3k edits on SO with no problem

I can't single-handedly approve/reject pending edits with 8k rep

@Dan: yep, I had thought that you could single-handedly approve/deny at 20k, but I'm not finding any evidence to support that now.

I could a week ago or something like that, but then someone changed it again

9:02 PM
Waffles wrote about it here, and I see only the "approve-wiki" 20k item.

A: Abridged too far?

Jeff Atwood In this case, I think the edit was an attempt to improve a rather poor question, but to me, it went too far and suggested a completely different, and less pleasant, personality in the asker. We are seeing a lot of "turd polishing" with suggested edits. By that I mean some of the posts should...

Q: What goes into making a huge video streaming website like youtube ?

WarDoGGI have been requested by a client to create a special niche online video streaming website. This system should be highly scalable to support even thousands of concurrent users, and should support video conversion to flv (when user uploads the video). I've looked into using Amazon EC2 cloud base...

Overly broad? I'm not sure what to think of something so huge

9:09 PM
"Quite a lot."

You could write pages about any one part of that question

Yah, but it may be possible to talk about the fundamental issues in a useful way w/o it being crazy long.

txt2re.com ← if you don't need Unicode support (hint, you do) this is great

Heh, Paul Graham himself responded to my latest SO submission to HN news.ycombinator.com/item?id=2183450

@DanGrossman I would have said that that this would be OK on Programmers' - until it got into technical aspects when SO, Web Masters and/or Server Fault might be better - but with the close votes it has it won't get migrated anyway

Q: Tips for locating my stolen computer

user379468I'm in a bit of a panic, my new Powerbook laptop was stolen. I had no mobile me, or security software installed on the computer. I have the mac address of the computer as well as the serial number. Is there a hacky way to do this? I was even thinking perhaps of trying to use bluetooth, I know I ...

Uhm, superuser maybe?

Why?

@drachenstern I have a question

Then you should ask it

@drachenstern a spelling question!! just join that room

Look at the list of lurkers

9:44 PM
> The last message was posted 4 hours ago.

I can read too
doesn't change that the list of lurkers includes several people in this room

9:58 PM
I wish people would indent their code using spaces instead of tabs ...

I thought that was decreed a law ;)

I wish the reverse.

@MichaelPetrotta why on earth?

You asserted first. What's your justification?

Because systems implement tabs at different letter widths

10:00 PM
You're both right!

So use the alignment in your editor that you're happy with.

(People indenting with tabs on SO makes me sad, people indenting with spaces elsewhere makes me sad)

so when you indent two or three levels it may or may not cause the line to disappear to the right off the screen

@MichaelPetrotta mainly because it is a pain to correct the indention when people post their code on SO

@MichaelPetrotta and most devs don't do that (many don't know how sadly)

10:01 PM
Are we talking SO editor here, or editing in general?

I'm talking about in general, but SO too

I agree wrt SO, but let's be honest, the SO editor is pretty poor.

@MichaelPetrotta I'm talking about SO mainly
@MichaelPetrotta if people would understand how it works it would not be that bad

In general, I hate the micro-adjustments I have to make when code is formatted with spaces. I think in terms of indent levels, which tabs model perfectly.

I mean for me it is not bad at all. I wish I could have markdown everywhere

10:03 PM
@MichaelPetrotta again, my editor handles that for me.

I don't see the purpose in a sub-single-indent level. It's like trying to cut a car in half.
(pardon my analogies)

@drachenstern dito

Some of my editors do. Others don't.
I have reason to use a few, that are good at different things.

@MichaelPetrotta all of mine do, so I never see that problem. Do you edit cross-platform?

@drachenstern: yes.

10:04 PM
I don't
that may be part of the distinction

Sure. I work maybe 50% of my time in VS, more than I spend in any other editor. If I did all my work there, I wouldn't care as much.

good night :)

@AidenBell Not just evil, but vastly evil.

I feel sorry for you both. You haven't experienced nirvana.

@dmckee - aye
How untasty does "Bananas injected with Satan's bum paste" sound lol

10:10 PM
@AidenBell lmao

@AidenBell ::busts up::

Well, as long as I'm liking unpopular stuff today, here you go:
Coconut.
Parsley.
Cilantro.
Real licorice.
Brussel sprouts.
All yum.

I happen to like all of those :\

Coconut is pure awe

@MichaelPetrotta we should make that cocktail

10:14 PM
Real licorice. Now that's sweet nirvana. Cilantro must be used with due care. Parsley's OK. You can keep the rest.

I go overboard. Go to a burrito place with the salsa stations, and I pile scoop after scoop of cilantro on top of my meal.
Oh, and raw garlic. With care, of course.

@AidenBell that's just sick

wtf indeed.

10:17 PM
@drachenstern - you are just upset because your inner monologue made you the pear
