but that's easy
> Install my chat user script and you won't need to constantly use your mouse

LOL

Q: My keyboard is broken! How can I use Chat.SO without it?

hehehe

@Shog9 On-screen keyboard and mouse.

@Shog9 how did you post this?

Every time I use my mouse it feels like my friends are judging me. How can I feel like a 1337 h4x0r while on MSO chat?

7:05 PM
@rchern I keep it in my clipboard, along with this follow-up text, in case of just such an emergency.

Feature request: Add a "my keyboard is broken" button next to "send" that alerts the room that I'm no longer able to communicate

oh lord, how did a question asking what is "randomer" between rand() and rand()*rand() get 83 upvotes.

@MichaelMrozek Maybe you should just go to that anger management class already.

@radp It even has its own SO chat...

@radp That actually could be legitimate. It's not a true random number generator, after all.
I haven't seen the question, though.

7:08 PM
bbl, asking SO what's their favourite number

87
Q: Understanding "randomness"

TrufaI cant get my head around this, which is more random? rand() OR rand() * rand() I´m findig it a real brain teaser, could you help me out? Thanks in advance! EDIT: Intuitively I know that the Mathematical answer will be that they are equally random but I can't help but think that if you "...

13!

Ugh, that question had serious potential until the edit.

It's had 20K views as well

int i = rand()/0; // obtain random zero

7:13 PM
3

275 upvotes for showing that when you multiply a number smaller than one with a number smaller than one you get a number smaller than both :/

@PopularDemand What's really random is the guy changing colours.

If that had been immediately obvious, the question would never have been asked...

That's more than all the upvotes I received in all my posts ever on SO :(
@Shog9 it's basic maths

@radp As I said...

7:15 PM
anybody who has toyed around with calculators knows that!
and this is no knitting club.

See, this is why your rep sucks

@radp No use crying over "unfair" rep gain/upvoting.

I'm not crying over "unfair"

Focusing on posting quality answers. I remember when I used to think that would gain me lots of rep

I genuinely don't think Skeet got 5 million reps by telling people 2 > 1

7:17 PM
You can explain something obscure to the handful of people who care about it... or something common to the hoards who've forgotten it.

just, those questions completely ruin the "game"

@radp What would you have SOIS do?

@radp Jon Skeet sells books telling people, in plain language, what anyone can determine for themselves by reading the spec and running the compiler.

You don't get taught specs and compilers when you are 7

You get taught to read though

7:18 PM
(...hardly)

Everything after that is just a matter of either reading or failing to read, understanding or failing to understand

@PopularDemand Bad idea of the day: every upvote after the 20th is worth half. Every upvote after the 40th is worth a quarter. Every upvote after the 80th is worth an eighth. etc.

Don't underestimate the value of a good explanation for something with wide appeal. No matter how well you understand it, chances are you'd fail trying to explain it to a fair number of others.
(see also: Pops and the Boolean Guy from last week)

@Shog9 Indeed, as Shog knows, I wrote
...
very well then.

No one beats your ellipses though, eh?

7:21 PM
@Shog9 What? By the time I pull the ellipses out, I'm already beaten.

Yes, but you preempted my ellipses!
Now I'm all backed up with ellipses. I have ellipses coming out the wazoo... <--- the location of the wazoo, apparently

@Shog9 Ugh, I am not your doctor.
You should really seek professional help for that.

I suspect professional help gave up on @Shog9 a long time ago

@radp I was just looking over the top-scoring SO questions to see if I could find a good example of a high-scoring legit question, and on top of page 7 I see "Understanding “randomness”."
2
@Shog9 (see also also: my algorithms prof and me from right now)

@PopularDemand I'm still bent out of shape over this:
3

7:27 PM
@MichaelMrozek, no kidding. the fact the the answer about jQuery is so far down the list is sickening.

@MichaelMrozek Please tell me the top answer is "spiders"!

@rchern More than likely the top answer was "a project that doesn't let me use jQuery"

Well, this is a classic example of what people think of as "10k MSO users."
Oh, now that more people are here, I'll throw my earlier question out there again: anyone know a good place for buying replacement laptop AC adapters?

ebay?

i'm back

7:29 PM
@Shog9 Eh, the quality's kind of hit-or-miss.

Used to be you could get (crappy, mostly-compatible) Toshiba and HP adapters all over the place, but not sure if that's still true. If it's Dell, I think you're stuck buying from Dell (or buying used)

@PopularDemand What model?

@TimStone dv2500, I think? It's not my computer.

I would definitely try to buy used over 3rd-party in any case - I've seen some stupid, stupid problems caused by almost-but-not-quite compatible
(battery charges but laptop won't power on, laptop powers up but won't charge battery, charge or run, pick one, burn out charging circuitry and never charge again...)

7:33 PM
@PopularDemand Hmm..

I keep hearing about this supposed scheme to standardize this stuff, but... They've been talking about it for at least a decade, and I don't really see anything happening

Fair enough. A similar problem happened to me with a Fujitsu with the factory-fresh charger, though.

@Shog9 Yeah, I know a friend who tried to buy a non-Dell replacement battery for her computer. Big mistake, heh.

I've actually never had a cheapo third-party solution fail.

@PopularDemand Me too, on Dell. Which just underlines the idea that the whole system is poorly-designed to start with.

7:35 PM
In this case it didn't exactly fail...The system just says "Yeah, this isn't a Dell battery, go home." and it doesn't charge.

oh i had that happen, but it was because my motherboard overheated and burnt out the battery jack or something like that
twas my work laptop, they replaced the motherboard and the power charger and the battery
laptop ran fine when plugged in, just wouldn't charge worth a damn

@rchern Huh. Maybe that's what happened to that Fujitsu.
Maybe I should give Linux another try on that thing.
I was dumb enough to go buy more RAM for it, even.
This may belong on SO chat, but: anyone have tips/resources on how to create algorithms?

Yes
Get yourself a copy of...
ALGORITHMS AND DATA STRUCTURES

Uh oh.

7:40 PM
:P
Can you be more specific?

I have a copy of Introduction to Algorithms. It's what's giving me all the trouble in the first place.
One of many examples: "Find the best solution for the 2-dimensional post-office location problem." Another: "Give an implementation of Heap-Delete that runs in O(log n) time for an n-element max-heap."

I haven't taken an algorithms class, so I won't be much help. However, do you think they are expecting a more sophisticated solution than guessing which one would be best, and then running tests?

correct answers being down-voted causes RRRRRAGE

I don't think that guess and check is the process you're expected to use to get a masters, but I might be wrong. :P

I'm with Tim. And they don't expect a solution in code anyways. Either math or plain language, depending on the question.

7:45 PM
google.

@Pop, Write some pseudo-code for the problem, then try to 'optimize' it until you have something with the run-time you need. Of course, that's probably what you're already doing. I don't know of any special approach to it.

@Fosco The noble answer: "but then I haven't learned anything." The less noble answer: "I won't have Google on the midterm."

@PopularDemand ah, didn't realize it was for school.

@Lance Yeah, that was basically what I was about to type when I saw RRRAGE and had to search.

7:47 PM
@LanceRoberts Yeah, it is... thanks, though.

@MarkC Yeah some guy posts an incorrect answer, down-votes 2 perfectly correct answers and comments negatively on them. then deletes his answer after getting beaten up.

Awesome!
Link?

lol

A: PHP Array remove items if missing key

FoscoCan you give this a shot and let me know what happens? $myArray = array_filter($myArray, "hasChildren"); function hasChildren($node) { if (isset($node->children)) return true; return false; }

my answer, with the OP saying it worked great, is of course not the highest voted.

THAT'S OK. You can be an unsung hero.

7:49 PM
@Fosco Back in my day, we were happy to get the accepted checkmark no matter what the voting said. Whippersnapper.

g:

@rchern Are there any more pending chat modification features that you aren't already working on? I'm bored, but not work-ready bored yet, heh.

@MarkC Not if waffles makes the proposed change to "no votes" instead of "zero score."

Back in the day, it was considered poor form to accept anything rated over -1.

I love localStorage. It is so much easier than a user account system...

7:51 PM
SO should just switch to everyone's posts being kept in local storage instead of on a centralized server

Ah, didn't know about that, but this is a great opening to say:

@PopularDemand What's that about?

@TimStone, /delete should be pretty much a copy of /edit just changing to click the delete button rather than edit
did you get GitExtensions setup?

@rchern I got annoyed with it and decided to just try using hg-git instead. ;)

its like, I just start up my browser, and there are all of my notes
the only problem is I need to make a good methodology for exporting it
I'm not sure how to do that in JS

7:52 PM
@TimStone There's a proposal to make answers with, say, +1/-1 not count towards Unsung Hero.
You'd have to have +0/-0.

@PopularDemand Oh, I thought that's how it was right now, heh.

@Popular I was going to say, "I think the voting system is a little too prominent. You can't evaluate a writing so simply (positive/negative) without losing accuracy. Sure, it appeals to the points-mentality, but it draws your attention away from the content of the site."
Also, I have a general question from the unaware: Was chat implemented on Meta only, at first, and when was it added to other sites?
Oh, man, I need 20 rep to use SO chatrooms (e.g. Vim).

@MarkC The blog discusses the rollouts, I believe.
Posted by Jeff Atwood on October 15th, 2010

It seems like only five short months ago we were discussing the value of having a hypothetical “Third Place” for our network:

The third place is a term used in the concept of community building to refer to social surroundings separate from the two usual social environments of home and the workplace. In his influential book The Great Good Place, Ray Oldenburg argues that third places are important for civil society, democracy, civic engagement, and establishing feelings of a sense of place. …

@MarkC Rolled out for MSO first. Can't remember when and in what order it was rolled out to the other sites. I think SU and SF then some of the betas and most recently SO

I wonder when they're going to fix the broken 'Stack Exchange' link in Meta.

8:03 PM
There's a blog post on the SF and SU roll out

The first one after MSO was SU, the blog post is here

Posted by Jeff Atwood on September 16th, 2010

As promised, we are slowly rolling out the third place across our network… even for ewoks!

In addition to chat.meta.stackoverflow and chat.serverfault we just brought up chat.superuser.com:

It’s only appropriate that, after adding per-site metas, we would also add chat to complete three out of four sites in the original “trilogy”.

Although chat.superuser.com is technically another public beta, we’re still on track for releasing chat network-wide in a few weeks. However, stackoverflow.com will be the last site to get chat because its immense volume presents the hardest challenge. …

Or that

Posted by Jeff Atwood on September 10th, 2010

As promised, we are slowly rolling out the third place across our network.

We started with chat.meta.stackoverflow, and as previously announced on the Server Fault blog, we now have chat.serverfault.com.

You may remember we rolled out per-site metas across the entire Stack Exchange network, as well as for Server Fault and Super User, back in July. So from our perspective, we’re completing the experience:

chat.serverfault.com is still a public beta, but we’re rapidly closing in on release status. I expect we’ll begin a fairly aggressive rollout of chat across all sites within 4 weeks or so — though do be advised that stackoverflow.com will be the last site to get it because of its immense volume. …

Oh, apparently SF was first. I thought it was SU for some reason

8:05 PM
Web apps and gaming got theirs soon after SF and SU. I think Ubuntu has chat too.
Web masters and Cooking haven't

@MarkC Do you have >200 rep on any SE site?

0
Q: Keeping a connection string secure when working with others.

FoscoSay you've started an open source project and are posting it on a public repository. (like I have, using Codeplex.) One of the key files just makes the connection to the database, contains the login/password, and is just included from any other source file that needs a database connection. Wha...

8:24 PM
"This comment is not eligible for voting or flagging"!? I didn't know comments could be locked.

@PopularDemand It's probably been deleted

No, apparently all comments to a question are auto-locked when the question itself is locked.

Oh, I've never noticed that

@MichaelMrozek I bit the bullet and opened the "biggest fear" post. I can't vote on any comment in that giant list, so I'm assuming.

@MichaelMrozek, uggghhh, make that question go away. My biggest fear is that I'll be stuck looking at stupid questions for the rest of eternity (that and having to listen to liberals try to make sense for the rest of eternity).
For those outside the US, I meant US liberals, which means they think that the country can spend more than it makes, and that babies are expendable.

8:32 PM
@LanceRoberts Aren't they? We can keep making them in effectively unlimited quantities.

bad @Shog9!!

cute spider - what make?

@Shog9 @PopularDemand @MichaelMrozek @LanceRoberts @rchern Thanks, everyone; I'll go up and read your replies. I had to leave for a while.

@MarkC Don't thank us 'til you're done.

8:35 PM
@Popular To answer your question, yes, I have over 400 on Programmers.

what am i being thanked for?
i'm not quite sure

For being awesome, I guess

but i'm going to keep talking
and just look at the bottom of my screen
and soon, very soon

I just wrote the names I saw, I figured you were probablyinvolved

@MarkC Associate your accounts and you can chat on all sites.

8:36 PM
there won't be an image i can see

Ok, they are associated

@MarkC If you reassociate your accounts you'll get a 100 bonus on all sites for having > 200 on one.

almost there.... (;

It's true, rchern.
So true.

8:36 PM
one more?

I just got the 20rep message when I joined the chat overview site

What?

huzzah!

Then again, I get the same message here, too

I didn't hear that.

8:37 PM
@ChrisF No way! Awesome.
How do I do that?

@PopularDemand, hear what?

@rchern That was just an excuse to keep entering more messages.
(Sometimes it sucks, having your monitor in portrait orientation.)

I switched tabs for about a minute and missed 30 messages...

(That is all.)

ah
hehehe
@MichaelMrozek, that may or may not have been planned

8:38 PM
@ChrisF @Popular So do I click "Clear all associations" then log in again?

@MarkC Go to your profile page, click the "Clear All Associations" and start again.

It won't log you out, but you will need to reassociate again

Warned...that I will need to reassociate on every site by hand?

Hm, I'd better head out soon for office hours.

8:39 PM
FUZZY!

Be warned - the associations with meta will be lost

@Shog9 Muted!

@MarkC Yes

wanders off to another room

Wait, where did the "be warned" go?
Oh ok
@ChrisF Is that bad?
(losing associations with meta)
Since I'll get them back in a little while?

8:40 PM
@MarkC Not the end of the world.
But you'll have to wait for the migrations to be complete.

Yes it will return, but might be awkward for a while

How so? Meaning I will need to log in more often? (Isn't the only effect that people won't see all my splendid accounts on one page?)

@MarkC Basically, yeah.

Bah!
Back in the day, we had log in to each site---both ways!

gah
you people don't talk enough
talk more!!
or ya know

8:42 PM
@rchern Your monitor is too tall; it's off mine now

don't!

No

we're good now

Is somebody here afraid of spiders?
Hahahaha

being afraid and not liking them are 2 different things

8:43 PM
Moderator banstick

No, I felt bad and deleted it :). I don't think any mods are paying attention atm

Okay one more question---will I need to clear associations on all sites?

Dunno.

I think it disconnects all your accounts everywhere (so no)

Okay, good. I wouldn't want to do n^2 clicks.
Since n is around over 20 now (I like to make accounts on sites that I'm interested in)
@Popular @Michael Ah, I just remembered two questions I wanted to ask.
(1) It looks like chat rooms have gone the way of proposals---almost anyone can make one, leading to no less than three (3) Haskell rooms, created within the last 3 days, I think. What do you think?

8:50 PM
I don't think the devs/mods much care; I personally don't frequent any of the language rooms, so it doesn't matter to me
I tried to make a stand and only use one of the two general rooms, and the other room ended up more popular from the looks of it, so I might just join both

I suppose I think the same; I wasn't bothered about the deluge of proposals since most of them will simply die off at the end of the list.
Are you talking about the SO general room or what?

Is there a way to flag a room as a duplicate? Five flags and it's closed!

My second question may take a little more consideration before it is useful:
(2) A lot of @names makes it hard to read, can we request some autoformatting (hide the @, I suppose) to reduce the noise?

Hey, where can I find the best wine? The SO Tavern OR The Tavern on meta?

8:55 PM
I don't mind it, but I guess I'm kind of used to it from IRC
Get @rchern to add it to her userscript

The best wine is at winehq.org

Wow,I can't believe I actually remembered that URL. I don't even use Linux
and have been to that site like twice
woops sorry
@Michael I think the language/topic chatrooms are a good idea, as long as they are active. It would be nice to have a place to go when I'm learning a new language.

Does the cut and paste thing work on this chat?

What do you mean?

9:01 PM
no way to copy your recommended wine link

It would've auto-linked if he'd done winehq.org, but you can always copy the text and paste it into your address bar

I can't copy
:)
with cmd+C on OSX|FF it does not work

Right, I'm not used to doing busy work (http, www, etc.)
Is @rchern still here?

cmd+c just writes c in the message box, I think could be a bug.

I was looking for my coment/post where I linked to the NGC/Discovery video about funnel web spiders.
The person who wrote back said they nearly jumped out of their chair

9:10 PM
@MarkC she is now at least

Hello, hello
Earlier when y'all were talking about spiders
I was thinking about dropping a video I linked to recently (but can't find the comment/post)
Here you go:
@rchern sorry I took so long, too many tabs

...
seriously?
that's why you alerted me?

Hrm... shakes fist at Firefox

@rchern Well...
Why not? :P
You were asking to post more so the pictures would go away.
@Tim Your problem is that you need more extensions
Like not saying "PLEASE" enough to INTERCAL

Actually, it's the extension model that I'm a bit disappointed in, heh.

9:23 PM
Yeah, I'm sort of poking fun at Firefox
Even though I use several extensions crucial to me

@MarkC, well i think it would be rather obvious that that request did not include posting more spiders.

I wonder how different things would be in here if @rchern were a chat mod
4

moar proper smilies!

grumbles

9:42 PM
@Michael I guess I would be suspended by now.

y'all make me sound much meaner than i really am ):

@rchern That's because you don't have the power to stop us :). I nominate rchern for chat mod

well i suppose if i built the chat i should be a mod right?
5
rofl

It is an odd inconsistency
I can't get in the habit of using slash commands. I reach for the mouse and go "wait -- not necessary!"

haha, it took all of about 2 seconds for me to transition (:
@MichaelMrozek, regarding your pull request, do you think it would be better to just construct the querystring instead of messing with the form attributes?

9:56 PM
@rchern I haven't taken a close look yet, but how does one use your chat script?

@rchern i haven't looked up what that script does yet, but i've already installed it. will look now! thanks

you might have the order reversed there but whatever works right? (;

Ah yes, that's the one I had open earlier.

lol
/me
/me test
how does this work?

10:02 PM
refresh the page after you install it

ok
test
cool
2 mins ago, by rchern
refresh the page after you install it
this is really cool!

^__^
agrees!

@rchern If you want; I was trying to mimic the way your code worked elsewhere

@MichaelMrozek, yeah, thinking about it i think it is fine. /list includes the filter in the variables, but that's because it is an ajax request

good job @rchern - this is awesome

10:42 PM
Anyone not here?
