It may be something with my new internet connection, as I have seen some odd behavior from a few sites, though generally speaking it's been fine. Plus, I had been logged out from both SE sites (and maybe So) & chat from a friend's house.
well, your avatar is put there when the page first loads. If you become logged out after that the avatar will still be there, but the ajax won't be you.
@Marc, it hasn't been chat-related but fyi-ish, but there have been more than a few times where I will be logged in on the parent site (can refresh, can view my activity, can view mod stuff), but trying the same on a linked meta won't work (and even the auto-login won't kick in until I go to the login page).
This is really starting to annoy me.

@balpha (I believe) In the transcript, the rollover for the different 'activity blocks' doesn't work unless you're on the right hand side - I suspect on the right of the block containing the times. In FF3.6.9. Very nice feature, btw
