I'm sure I'm not the first to suggest it, but to make the IRC parallel complete we should have /me

@Michael we already have that captured somewhere; simply need to find a new minutes to get it done

/me Hello

The trick is making it third-person
Chacha102 says hello
for example, might be an implementation of /me says hello
not sure how/if we'll actually do it, but something like that.

@rchern For my basic use (After getting the rooms I want open) I almost need no tabs
thank you @Chacha102
I thought I was the only one using the chat like that

Wait, we can quote people?
not sure how/if we'll actually do it, but something like that.

suggestion: we need per-site chat sounds. Right now I have the other chat site open and I can't tell its "new" sound from this site's "new" sound.

ok, that is how we do it

far ahead of you, @jeff
the community manager is working hard on picking the correct sounds

Are there any other sites up with Chat?

Q: What links and sites are handled specially in chat?

Juha SyrjäläThere is special linking to some sites in chat. What is the full list of supported and integrated sites?

We're starting with meta. So not yet. But there will be.

7:18 PM
Jeff said there was another instance of Chat running
Dev version?
Also, what is the difference between site chats

Will I have to open up separate tabs for each?

There is a dev site, yes. But we also have a site just for gossipping about users. And the difference? The colour scheme and logos.

For different site Chats, will they all be separate?
In the fact that, can I join a chat room in another site chat, and be able to switch to it from here

Yes, in the current implementation. It is single site.

7:22 PM
ok
Single site per domain right?
so SuperUser is completely separate from Serverfault
It would be nice to eventually have a binding one that will allow you to switch between all the different chats. But I guess that is for the future

yeah, there's currently a "all-stackexchange-sites-in-on-place" thingadongdong in the works
(sooner or) later, the same might go for the chats

thingadongdong?
Thats a really old question..
you're making me feel old

I still love that word

its great
Is the post still up?

Q: Messages? Notifications? Warnings? Are they different or all the same? Which one should I be using?

Grace NoteThis is actually a mostly serious concern. Nevertheless, for the interest of not sounding biased towards a particular choice, I will henceforth refer to these "big collections of text" as "thingadongdong". We should probably come to terms on what to properly call them, though. There are a lot of...

no, thingadongdong is older. I don't know where it showed up first

Q: does stackoverflow forget their registered users?

today i hit upon an interesting question here on stOckover~flow (about monotonically increasing time, but that is beside the point), and i immediately thought i could contribute somewhat, and so tried to log-in, using my google OpenID thingadongdong. it didn’t work. well, somehow it did. anyhow...

There is one from Jan and one from May

yeah @chacha has the right one -- that's the first appearance of thingadongdong

@Jeff I know you can find a stack exchange site that can use the domain

@balpha, the key there is once you get everything set up. obviously yes once you're done with a tab you can close it. that doesn't mean that any less tabs are opened to get to that point.

7:43 PM
yes, I at least want a "join all my favorite rooms at once" link

yeah
I'd like it to remember which rooms I'm in
Either an option to auto-join all my favorite rooms
or to remember and join the rooms I was in last time

yes, I want that, too. Let's tell that to... who's programming the chat again? Oh, wait...

@balpha
I have something to tell you
in Chat feedback, 2010-08-03, by Chacha102
I'd like it to remember which rooms I'm in

I'm on vacation

What is ... vac-a-t-ion?
is it like a period of working extra hours?
:P
Who else is programming chat?

7:48 PM
marc and I

Ah. K. I'll just make a big list of suggestions and post each one to Meta

auto-joining rooms is just one part of it though. ;)

Give me all the ideas you want
I'll post them all

hey, we've got tag synonyms now

old news

7:50 PM
let's just do [chat] -> [status-declined]

[chat] + [feature-request] -> [status-declined]

I was about to say we need something for [unicorns], but it looks like I'm too late meta.stackoverflow.com/questions/…
(I got the taxonomist for that, btw.)
on a side note, I have just ordered thingadongdong.com

nice
what are you going to put on it?
what are you going to put on it?
Grr. I got a timeout error
I think someone might have been deploying something
God I hope Evan Carroll never gets in here

I have no idea what to do with it

He has more than 20 rep
everyone! run for the bunkers!

8:01 PM
I also own ü-wie-geek.de
was a purchase under the influence

we were looking for a German expression for "geek"
to replace the word "geek", it had to be shorter than "geek"
IOW, it had to be a vowel
pretty much only one left was "ü"

we need more people

are you saying I'm boring??????one??

no
I'm saying that we need more people
Hi oak

Oak
8:05 PM
Links stopped being pretty-printed?

Oak
It gives me the tryout / cancel thing constantly

8:07 PM
I think they patched it with something
and it is bugging it out

Oak
Doesn't work, I only see the links (2 of them now)

yeah
I just posted a link to my bug report

8:10 PM
yeah
"Prettifully" is totally a word

maybe an API issue

Yeah, I keep getting timed out
wait, there are more meta site?
Where I can mock peopel?
people*
MUHUHAHAHA

feature-request: Display current chat time somewhere in chat. Maybe down in the big gray bar at the bottom. Don't like responding to something to find out that it's been two hours since they posted.

Post Feature Requests on Meta.Chat.Meta.Stackoverflow.com

current chat time is local time
all time stamps display should be your time

8:15 PM
or maybe it was meta.stackoverflow.com

if not, that's a bug

it was that one
balpha
can you show me what a hidden room looks like?

just like any other room
except there's a cigar dispenser

true story

who is Nick Craver?

8:19 PM
a nobody :)

he's my jQuery god

Q: Auto-Join Rooms

Chacha102It would be really helpful if I didn't have to manually join the rooms I'm interested in every time I launch chat. What I'd suggest is one of two mechanisms for auto-joining chat rooms. Auto-Join Favorites Make a setting so that you will automatically join rooms you mark as 'favorites'. Remembe...

$.chatroom({style: "awesome"});

does it work yet

8:20 PM
that's all it took

it works again

Oak
Woo!

?
That is the only change?

had this all open all day, $.cache is looking good
good job balpha :)

Q: Who is this guy?

empiDo you know what game this guy comes from?

Yay.

8:22 PM
5 minute timer on edits and deletes right?

2

Too much downtime..

8:39 PM
@Chacha102 Before Jeff told us to post chat requests here, didn't know that changed.

@Noctrine Someone told me to post it in Meta
so I'm just passing it along

either way is fine
if it's a bigger one, where the community should have a say: post it on meta
if it's smallish, like "why didn't you think of this", post it here

red starburst dispenser, is that a small or big-ish request?

depends
is there a jQuery plugin for that?

5 star rating easy
we should make one

8:48 PM

love that picture
forget all the jquery, the questions on the right are the best part
hah i've never noticed this on meta

9:03 PM
@NickCraver What, that he has -1000 reputation?

just the graph, cracks me up for some reason

yeah
@JeffAtwood lol

And is great! (that's his name)

@JeffAtwood Are you just programming away, popping in everyone once in awhile to talk to us?

9:06 PM
still talking to Joel

I agree with some of the points he makes, my problem is with a programmer not wanting to understand why something works, I just...can't understand that, sometimes you need the quick route, but too many take it 100% of the time, and it's a really bad app that comes out of that, probably a maintenance nightmare to boot
@Jeff - how's his puppy? the fiance's in love with it from the first picture he posted

Every bug fixed without knowing the root cause is another demon waiting to trouble me late at night.

I think the following is very ironic

Q: Links no longer formatted prettifully

Chacha102When you post a link in chat that is suppose to be formatted nicely (StackOverflow Question, Amazon Link, etc), it no longer converts it to something prettiful. Sometimes it times out and asks me to retry. Other times it just never reformats it.

@shog9 - amen

:O The Reputation thing shows negative rep!

9:11 PM
My suggestion is that in-line links should also be formatted, maybe limited to one per still
For example: Text here linkthatformats.com

would render that line, but also another line with the link below it, as if the user had entered the link by itself on the very next line

That would be a very nice way of doing it

tuesday continues to be high-acceptance day on questions, i swear i'm not crazy, i need to write an odata query to prove it
i wonder if the question accepted date is available on data explorer

9:16 PM
awww it's not available, wonder if it can be added to the dump, or if DE just doesn't include it

DE?

data explorer

BTW, there is a timestamp on the Accepted Answer button
with when it was accepted
so I imagine it is just data explorer

right, that's what i want to get at
grabbing the dump torrent now, seeing if it's in there

man, this chat thing is going to be awesome when more people join it
I think with a few tweaks in the interface it will be the perfect 3rd place for users

9:19 PM
The secret 3 day first look beta was pretty active. I suppose it won't blow up again without a blog post

you mean.. more .. awesome

Yeah, in the week or so without it I just didn't know how we would manage sites until it came back :p

@JeffAtwood Yes, I mean ... however you do italics, more awesome

Asterisk

* or _ :)

9:20 PM
Very Awesome

but thats for bold..
bah

Two Asterisks are for bold

or
I see

Three for Bold + Italic

Hello

9:20 PM
*Hello*

Hello
@JeffAtwood We need /me

_Hello_

/me is awesome

hmmm
wonder why that isn't working

/me gets annoying
Especially when new users find it

9:21 PM
someone said that it currently has some code finished

Just like /slap

but isn't ready to implement
/slap Noctrine

status-slap-happy

how do you do tags?

@Noctrine slaps @Chacha102 around with the rear end of a Boeing 747
status-awesome

9:22 PM
use [status-*]

status-test
there we go

No general-purpose tags? [tag]
Guess not.

only for status tags?

Looks that way

@NickCraver Are you a programmer for SO/SE?

9:23 PM
nope
just cleaning up quesitons/chilling before a haircut :)

I really should become more involved in the community

You should
Test
feature-request: Support formatting >>

I had about a year to two year run of doing tons of questions/answers. Then just kind of got burned out
It gets annoying dealing with stupid people

Can't get to questions in time

You can only explain so many times why you can't pass PHP variables to Javascript and then back

9:26 PM
Not that refresh happy, so I can't keep up in PHP and nothing gets asked in Blackberry

plus I got to 1,000 upvotes in PHP

i just started questions that interested me, JavaScript/jQuery at the moment, will probably need to find another category to stay interested

That kinda ended my reign

@cha grats on a gold badge then :)

@nick thanks.
Through those 1,000 upvotes I heard practically everything you could hear about why PHP sucks and why it is a terrible language
but then again, everyone hates everything so...

9:29 PM
Yeah

it's usually cross-browser quirks in my category, and people cursing them

You could do like me. Start hanging out on Meta all the time and make lame jokes until they make you a ♦ out of sympathy.

I will say that programmers are very quick to hate on the tools before themselves

@mmyers I tried that
am only at 10k

Only at 100 ><

9:30 PM
i just want 1k on meta, so i can see up/down vote splits :)

I'm only 1,000 behind mmyers
HEY @mmyers ! UPVOTE ME
so I can get to 10k
:P
Maybe @JeffAtwood Will make me a Moderator out of Sympathy too!

@cha How about I recalc you?

no!

I lost about 300 rep when I first recalced myself. Now I stand to lose another 200.

I realized about a month ago I was like 1k over where I was suppose to be

9:32 PM
mod upvote, +500? :)

and I was like ... crap...

And I didn't even post in all the unicorn threads.

mod upvote, +500? :)

Have you made any good posts on meta, @nick?
I have to admit that sometimes I go to Super User and look for people who are near 2k or 3k to upvote because I think SU needs more of those.
But not very often.

not really, i keep track of the more-annoying badge sponsors, but that's it :)
17
A: Should tags that represent concepts be sponsorable?

Nick CraverUpdate to this, a more annoying set of tags just appeared for Devexpress, due to the sheer volume they appear, they're sponsoring some of the most common tags on the site now. I'm not for blocking ads on SO, but with this change I'll be actively blocking the tag icons, this is a big (at least to...

9:34 PM
I just like making peoples day by uping them to a new level
or downvoting Evan

the devexpress tags (and really, because they're blue) are the only thing that's ever been less than pleasant about SO, at least to me

those are my two favorite past times

I think he is going for the lowest rep award
You may just be encouraging him

I want to see @JeffAtwood give him a badge for getting -1000 reputation

yeah, i think there's some data normalization going on there, has to be

9:37 PM
Doubt that will make him go away

my "rep today" screen or however it's called is off every now and then by a few votes compared to the rep report

9:48 PM
is it bad that I spent 2 years on the internet doing nothing but answer StackOverflow questions?

Compared to other things you could have done in 2 years on the internet, or compared to other things you could have done in 2 years?

compared to other things I could have done in 2 years on the internet

I tend to think it's one of the more productive things you can do, helps others out now, future people later, also doubles as a resume of sorts for yourself

Now that you've got that, drop out of school and start a consultancy.
(Maybe I've read too much HN today.)

9:57 PM
The guys on HN are funny

@Michael - yes? :)

AAH!
I suck at this

He is trying to say..
He hates you.
There you go, I said it.
Now we can all move along

I get that a lot, he must be female

Hey neat, I didn't know there was a revision history for chat messages.

9:59 PM
since I can't do my "tuesday is accept day" query, new request time:
1
Q: Request: Include the answer accepted date in the monthly data dump

Nick CraverIs there any chance of including the "answer accepted date" in the Data Dump? Specifically I mean when you hover over the accepted answer checkmark you get a tooltip: The question owner accepted this as the best answer xx units ago Can we include that time property in the dump....or is it ...

This is the channel were we upvote anything posted in it right?
