or if you have access to the dump and can add a property ;)

At this rate, you'll hit 1k in about... 45 seconds. @Nick

Ask @balpha
oh wait
he is on vacation

i'm not sure how "locked-in" the dump is, since there are importers, not sure how many break when there are changes, or if they look for properties and ignore others as much xml things do, and it works fine

Ask @JeffAtwood to order his minions around

balpha was around earlier, he's in germany though iirc
probly sleeping, or out and about for the night :)

10:02 PM
yeah it's like 11 pm - 12 am in Europe. Try again in 8 ish hours

Slacker

(See, you say Jeff's name and he magically appears!)

@Jeff - is he the main data-dump coder?

I love how everyone in this room up voted Nick's question.

haha, i just refreshed it, 1 rep point away from seeing up/down votes!

10:04 PM
hah!
take that!

awww

I reversed it
Wanted to make sure it wasn't locked in as a downvote

woo hoo, 1 point away!
<3 i can see the downvote split!

Now we wait for the serial-upvoting script to take away all of @Nick's new-found points.

i don't care though, see i can go around and click all those posts i wondered about, how controversial they were up/down. strip my votes at 8pm, my curiosity will be satisfied by then! :)

10:16 PM
this isn't "chat feedback" chat, guys. Just sayin'.

Why are you bringing me down @Jeff, Why are you bringing me down? DON'T BRING ME DOWN!

So as you can clearly no longer see, slugs have no need of tongues, as they have sensory tentacles

Hey, I left some chat feedback. Check at 16:58 (or I suppose that would be 14:58 to you). @Jeff

I'm adding "please try to stay roughly on topic for the room" to the /faq

but that isn't a frequently asked question
no one has asked that yet...

10:19 PM
Wait a minute - THIS ISN'T DRAGONDUCKS
Why am I here?

I don't know..

Where is that beautiful house?

Because Weblog turned on his Music Spammer?

I was reading about slugs, and annoying Welbog. Now I'm looking at a YouTube link. This is confusing and frustrating.

@mmyers there's no revision history for chat messages that I know of.. we do have the edited icon

10:22 PM
@Jeff there is a history link..

wow, didn't even know

It's even there for deleted messages, at least for me.

I see your development team is getting ahead of you

More feedback: If you edit someone else's message to refer to yourself, it does indeed cause your avatar to bounce.

10:24 PM
Tuesday is a close second..

@mmyers: I don't believe you.

How much rep do I have to get to be able to edit someone else's message?

i think you need a diamond on the end

AHHHH! TROGGY!!!

yes, burnination has arrived.

10:28 PM
status-burnination

Hmm, I just realized what time it was. I have a meeting in two minutes.
Now I sound like Welbog.
... and I am going to miss all the fun.
I'll be back.

the fun will be over by then
all the best stuff happens when you're in a meeting
that's just how meetings work

@Shog9: Want me to repost your deleted messages from DRAGONDUCKS? ...No, I don't want me to do that.

i have deleted messages?
GIMME!
Feature Request: allow me to annoy Welbog with suitably gaudy Area51 links
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ not suitably gaudy

10:43 PM
Last time I asked (and I did ;p) there was no API for Area51 ;(

@MarcGravell You have it a little backwards
I would think that leave all would mean it would remember any channels
and just closing the browser window would cause it to remember next time I opened

we are picking up from meta now, yes?

yes
The remembering, at least as I envisioned it, would be for times when I didn't explicitly say that I wanted to close all the rooms

Ah, ok. That would require a little more work - at the moment there is a job that detects people who aren't really in a room any more and boots them.

ah
The rejoin favorites might be the best bet then

10:46 PM
We don't currently distinguish between "left voluntarily" and "kicked for inactivity"

ah. So no different between clicking leave and just closing the window
difference*

it is certainly the option we can do "now" rather than in 6-8 weeks.

yeah

(I say "now"... I mean after some sleep)

of course

10:47 PM
There is a difference; if you click leave the other people get to see you leave. Which is actually quite useful.

ah

Or rather, they get to see sooner.
so not a big difference.

I'd almost think that, in the future, there could be next to the favorite button an autojoin button
that could toggle autojoin on/off

When it is busy (I'm thinking of the 3-day trial) it is not uncommon to see 4,5 etc people leave at once - that is the job noticing people.

ah

10:49 PM
where is the RAGEQUIT button going to sit?

No need; just throw your laptop out the window. Done.

I just think that I have some rooms that I normally join, and it would be easier to just have that automatic
then in a few months I can start to hound you guys about making a chat client that is cross-site
so I can easily chat and switch between rooms on any domain
But, so far the chat is very awesome
few timeouts, but overall very awesome
just needs more people

That is pretty much how I use it to. Actually, thinking about it maybe there is somewhere I can put that in here - near the "other rooms you're in", because we need to be in a room for it to work
Re timeouts - a quick F5 experiment suggests that we still have a minor glitch with server configuration. That should be resolved soon.

another quick suggestion would be to have a drop down list somewhere that gave you a list of all of the rooms your in. Especially because sometimes the "other rooms you're in" widget can't fit them all

maybe, maybe. Actually, we might have gained some space there...

10:54 PM
hmm?

there is a panel (that you can't see), for moderation purposes (flagged posts etc); I think the plan is to relocate that, making a bit more space for starred messages and other rooms.
Primarily starred messages.

Is there a max number of rooms you can be in?
And might a fix to that be to tab the favorites area?
One tab for favorites, another for mod messages

No hard limit

(I'm assuming that the mod messages looks like the favorites widget)

We have another UI design for that. By which I mean "it is in hand"; actually it is currently a lot like the "favorites" panel. But that'll change soon.

10:56 PM
ah
yeah, cause right now there is a nice gap between the bottom and the end of the favorites window
Possibly make those bigger if the screen is higher?

not for me ;p of course, I'm on a small laptop w/o monitor at this moment...

So that my big 24-inch monitor's space is effectively used?

we're on it! really!
(or will be, tomorrow)

I know! This is the Chat feedback channel so I'm giving feedback

10:58 PM
I'm just throwing out as many ideas as I can think of

Thanks; it is valued.

Would be nice if it wasn't military time..

huh? time should be localized...

it is
but 24-hour not 12
mine shows 15:59

oh right; you mean 24 hour

10:59 PM
right, military time
or, I know it as military time

Right or wrong, but by "military" I always think "zulu" (UTC) as well as 24-hour.

ah

zulu = cool name

Yeah, 3:59p or 3:59pm would probably be nicer than 15:59. Less calculations

@marc shouldn't you be sleeping? isn't it whatever zulu there?

11:01 PM
Yes I should; and no, it isn't zulu here ;p BST=GMT+1
A common myth is that SO runs on Jon Skeet time. Actually, the servers are wrong for half the year, when Jon Skeet goes forward an hour and the servers fail to adjust.

sweet, I can hide/ignore you!
Or more importantly Evan..
How often does the feeds thing update?

I'd be interested in opinions on the time format, but 24-hour just seemed the obvious choice. That said, it is slightly odd (IMO) to be "h:mm", not "hh:mm" ;p

How is it the obvious choice? It is currently the only thing I have seen all day that considers 3pm to be 15:00

Feeds: You know what? I don't honestly know. I handed control of that job to Jeff this morning...
I'm confused; where is 3pm getting confused with 16:00?

Updated.

11:07 PM
makes more sense now. Gotta love globals; I don't have any clocks that show me am/pm. Anywhere.

I think it "feels" off because of the normal SO format being so different, "xx minutes ago" for example

IIRC that approach felt a lot harder to understand in a constantly updating chat world. OK in the largely static SO world, though.

SO actually does 24-hour time for really old stuff...
but then again, no one cares about time when something is that far back

We use the same code - see the starred posts.

I agree that doesn't fit here either, just the reason it feels different/off

11:09 PM
even the same name :)
'favorites'

That is scheduled for change ;p

to?
I like it because it is a lot like Hacker New's upvotes

"starred"

when someone makes a good point, it deserves to be recognized

Oddly enough, I believe that was what it was called in the first build. Gotta love progress.

11:10 PM
why don't you just say "Great Messages"...?
it instantly conveys the idea
and then if you put a star icon next to it, people will get it

that is also what we currently say on the action menu
@Jeff - thoughts on that? Still happy with "starred"?

Jeff was talking in the Dragon Ducks room a few minutes ago
BTW, I love the other rooms you're in feature

starred is fine
the meaning is up to the user

@Chacha - easy to track multiple rooms; just watch for when you turn blue and your head starts bobbing up and down. Wait - or is that swimming in strong currents? One or the other...
Cheers; starred it is then.

@Marc I just like being able to view when people say stuff in other rooms
And if I'm interested in the conversation I can pop in

11:14 PM
star == self-absorbed

@Chacha exactly

@Marc, kind of like a preview of the chat without having to go in

OK; I'm going to get some sleep. Try not to break it, folks.

That sounded like a challenge..

he's challenging us not to break it
WHO WILL RISE TO THE CHALLENGE?

11:20 PM
I'd rather ignore the challenge completely

@Chacha102 bah, you're no hero. I'm taking down my shrine.
you can have your hair and toenail clippings back.

@Shog9 Thanks I needed those

still a few leaks i believe that need cleaning up, opening a user's info for example

gah
Yeah, I don't like the user info
and the Chat listings page could use some work

CROSS!

11:30 PM
OVAL!

SQUARE!

CIRCLE!

what's up?

nothing much
been talking about the service
I want to try out the invitations
I'm going to create another room and invite you

ok

11:33 PM
Ok, sent
