@ShadowWizard When your matrix clause is an interrogative, you should use both do-support and subj-aux inversion.

IOW, it's strictly ungrammatical to say "How a cow tastes?"

You should say "How does a cow taste?"

But, when it's not the matrix clause, i.e. it's a subordinate clause, a clause embedded in another, you shouldn't use do-support or inversion

So something like "I know how a cow tastes like" is perfectly acceptable

BUT,

The structure you used is commonly seen in echo questions.

Questions formed with an illocutionary force of an interrogative, while syntactically being declarative sentences

> A: I ate your pizza.

> B: You did what?!

"You did what?!" is formed like a declarative sentence, but is used to ask a question

Bow down to my superior linguistic jargon, and use correct grammar.
