@ShadowWizardLoveZelda that seems unlikely. It doesn't have precedent in modern governments at least, I don't think. Your concerns are genuine but the real threat to any democratic process, as in every other country in the world, is fearmongering populists.
Sure, the Brits, for example, constantly berate their PMs and it looks really bad from the outside. But still, all the ups and downs of British politics and economy are the result of decisions made by the parties in power, occasionally goaded by populists
If they didn't trash Liz Truss or British Trump, things wouldn't have looked any different than they are now.
@ShadowWizardLoveZelda this is very dramatic. And I don't think it's realistic. Unless you have some interesting analyses to share (and no, politicians seething on X doesn't count, a civil war is pretty extreme and unheard of in countries that colonists haven't ravaged in the previous centuries)
@Zoe that's too optimistic. Israel will not spend anything on Gaza's infrastructure or they already would have tried to minimize damage.
Or Rafah. Or any place they bomb a lot.
@Marco how many confirmed Hamas agents have been killed? How many civilians have been killed? It's hard to believe Israeli propaganda when the ratio is so skewed. They're not trying to prevent civilian casualties.
@Marco what is your opinion on the current mass deportation of Palestinians, and how do you suggest it's compatible with the view that "Palestine has the right to exist"? It seems clear to me that Israel wants all the Palestinians out of their homes, what happens to them, whether they die or find some Arab country like Egypt to accept them seems irrelevant to them.
@Marco Because Bibi's war crimes legitimized Hamas. SA and other Arab countries that are not dogged like Iran and were trying to reach a compromise with Israel have been conspicuously silent, because after what IDF has recently been doing Palestinians will certainly rally behind the only force they see opposing IDF, and that is Hamas.
@AndreasmovedtoCodidact Apartheid is what apartheid does.
@ShadowWizardLoveZelda isn't this whole thing Bibi's ploy to stay in power? I think he'll laugh in the face of the arrest warrant
And despite your pessimism, his opponents wouldn't want to sow discord so much as to try to force him into jail.
The chance of any justice happening (if a meager fine or a bit of time in prison can be called justice for abetting the murder of thousands of innocents) is very slim IMO
@ShadowWizardLoveZelda Yeah they wouldn't
@Marco how exactly do you propose that Israel eliminate Hamas? What do you think they could've done better?
I can't help but wonder that you're reducing a very complex situation to "just kill the bad guys, it'll be fine"
10 years from now, some Palestinian kids will join Hamas, or what it'll change its name into by then, because of Israel's actions today.
Evil demagogues like Bibi will then justify ethnic cleansing, because of those future Hamas agents.
Iran will still supply anyone with bloodlust cheap mass-produced weapons to threaten Israeli peace.
The US will still supply Israel with the sort of bombs that, when employed by Russia against Ukrainian civilians, are condemned as illegal and inhumane.
Parasites that feed off the blood of innocents, Israeli and Palestinian, and get stronger.

It’s a truly awful situation. It seems as if there’s nothing we as outsiders can do to make a change. It’s all up to Israel and USA. I partook in the march through the streets in the city 2 days ago, and there were Palestinian flags in all the sections of it. The support for Palestine was given priority this year. But what does it help? What change does it make? None, really.

@AndreasmovedtoCodidact oh good morning to you too! Well, it does has effect, but the opposite of the intended effect. Here inside Israel, the right winged extremists use this to color Europe as hateful and convince the government to ignore any advise or real attempt to give advise. More than that, Israeli people who also support any advise from Europe are colored as "lefties" and marked as "people you should hate if you love Israel".
oh my looks like I have big backlog of pings to reply... feeling like JNat

8:28 AM
@ShadowWizardLoveZelda Good morning. They would use anything against their views to label their opponents as anti-Israeli, anti-Jewish awful people, anyway. The alternative is that we remain silent, and don’t speak up against it. That’s not acceptable.

@AndreasmovedtoCodidact I agree.
And sadly got to go prepare lunch, I have 90 minutes to cook 3-4 dishes. Wish me luck! :D
(so backlog will wait.)

@ShadowWizardLoveZelda Should be doable depending on what you're cooking :D
Lots of pre-prepped veggies and stuff is easy.

@SPArcheon Blegh, really spoils the only 'good' part about meal prepping :P

@Tinkeringbell Should just cook every day. ;)

Nah, that doesn't work for me.
I don't mind cooking, but I need to feel like I have plenty of time to do it. Usually after a day of work, I don't feel like that. Then I want to spend my remaining time on stuff that's more fun than a chore like cooking.

@M.A.R. to be clear, when I said "spend resources on", I didn't mean infrastructure, but resources required to maintain control of the region - that primarily means military, but also food and water (at least to keep the population happy enough that they don't cause too much of a problem)

Anybody has some computer component recommendations? It's time for me to acquire a self-assembled desktop computer, and leave my laptop behind (literally, it's falling apart. The charging port is loose, the screen frame is held together with duct tape, the USB ports are all severely damaged).

Eh, a motherboard, RAM, a CPU, some fans... oh, and a power thing :P

Thanks, that was very specific.

I'm sorry. I built mine years ago and it still works so I haven't looked into anything recently ;)

That was everything I need to know. Buying a used motherboard from the birth center, a ceiling fan from the clothes store, a used CPU from my previous phone, and a gas turbine for power.

@AndreasmovedtoCodidact CPU cores no less than 4, RAM no less than 4, GPU Nvidia!

I'd love to see the end result then :P

@Tinkeringbell I've never assembled one before.

@AndreasmovedtoCodidact I did disassemble, as in break, one old computer, lol.
Good old times when computers had 128 MB RAM.

@Petəíŕd The Spring Wizard Of course. Was looking at i7-14700K, which has 20 cores. Not sure if I should get Intel or AMD yet. And I already have 32 GB of RAM, and I think I'll continue with that for a while. I might be able to use my laptop's RAM in the desktop computer. They're kinda old and used, though. DDR4, I think.

This was mine. 2017.

@Petəíŕd The Spring Wizard Hey, that I've done, too. :P For a science project in middle school.

@AndreasmovedtoCodidact Plot twist, I did program on such a computer a bit, 2 cores and 2 GB RAM.

@Petəíŕd The Spring Wizard You'll love more RAM.

@AndreasmovedtoCodidact of course, I need it for chess engines. ;)

@Tinkeringbell Does that cabinet provide enough heat escape? It seems rather opaque.

And for programming a lot of things.

@AndreasmovedtoCodidact Haven't heard any components complain yet ;)
The front comes off and there's a whole thing behind it for airflow.

@Tinkeringbell it is! I made chicken breast on a pan, french fries in oven, ground meat, and pasta.

@Tinkeringbell Ah, mine do. Got lots of heat escapes in this laptop (Acer Predator Helios 500, 2018). It gets HOT.

@AndreasmovedtoCodidact I must admit I probably never pushed this thing to the max. We built it with the idea that I'd use it for some pretty heavy duty things, but it never had more stress than heavily modded Stardew Valley, 50 Chrome tabs, and Discord at the same time ;)

@Tinkeringbell laggy connection, actually it's impossible to do that on purpose, chat will just ignore the second message. ;)

@Tinkeringbell My current one has certainly been pushed to its limits. Maybe if I got it with the i9 instead of i7, I could've had it for another year. :P And if it didn't fall apart...

@Petəíŕd The Spring Wizard I mean for ordinary user who don't use hacks. ;)

@Tinkeringbell mhm, not a fan of the UX, and I want something more reliable and trustworthy. So a Unix system. I'd probably fall down on some mainstream Linux distribution, for the ease. But I need to sort out the games, first. I may still need Windows for a few games, and I'm not interested in dualbooting. So in that case, it'll be Windows. It also means I don't have to start over again with a lot of stuff.

@M.A.R. found something interesting and written by someone who's probably much wiser than me: runi.ac.il/research-institutes/government/ips/activities/…
It was written before the Attack, but sadly still very relevant.
I'll post the translation of the last paragraphs:
It is very difficult to assess at this stage where the public protest in Israel will develop and how far the government will go in its attempts to produce administrative and governmental change in Israel without consent. History will probably know how to do it better in the future. However, if we understand the various characteristics and factors that create coups and civil wars, we cannot avoid the obvious conclusion that these are clearly taking place in today's Israel.

For example, the deep ideological gap and the wide rift between the secular and pluralistic views and the religious and
Funny part? The " The government of Israel must immediately" one - I see hundreds of those posted, there's several every day, some are jokes and can be ignored, but some like the one above are serious and would indeed greatly help. And out of those tons of well formed pleas for actions, how many our goverment even consider? Right: zero. They ignore ALL feedback, no matter who gives it. They throw all advise to the trash if it's not following their agenda to begin with.
And that's why I said 100%, and still think so.
@Marco hehe, if I had a real solution for that I'd become famous and powerful. There's likely no solution, think I said before what I consider as the only possible future: we'll have it the same way as before October 7th 2023, perhaps plus military control of Gaza which won't make a big difference to civilians on any side. Hamas will still exist and thrive, building its power for the next attack.
(possibly under different name as @M.A.R. suggested, to give a rope to our pity leaders who can say "but see! Hamas is gone!".)
In the early days after the attack I thought that having Palestine as actual country, that Israel will admit in its existence and sign peace treaty with, might be the solution. Alas, it's not. One major and unfixable obstacle is the hatred I mentioned before as well: the population in both sides won't let such thing to happen.

3:27 PM
@AndreasmovedtoCodidact Wow
@ShadowWizardLoveZelda Criminal law recognizes a right to self-defense, but it has a limit. So is it also between countries. Genocide obviously is above that limit. Beside the genocide, yet more terrible problem is that I can not see, why any of the populations would not do yet another again
@ShadowWizardLoveZelda For example, if someone slaps you, you are surely allowed to grab his hands. You are still not allowed to break his neck. What is the limit between the two, it depends on the jurisdiction
@ShadowWizardLoveZelda So is it also between countries
@AndreasmovedtoCodidact Very sad :-( I always tought, actually the highest rep guys are the most enslaved guys here
The guys with <100 rep, and with some questions... you know, they have a life.
@AndreasmovedtoCodidact John Skeet has got a good google job, probably in the $150-200k/y regime, with his SO fame. Then he disappeared
I think, he, with his disappearance, he did not lose. He did it well.

3:57 PM
@peterh very simplified, and the crucial point is for either side to prove their claims regarding the genocide. But it's already taken to court, and for my part like I said I won't mind and even accept happily if our PM is arrested for that. I love my country, I hate our government.
If that's the way to bring it down, so be it.

4:44 PM
@peterh They are the most effective at repeatedly answering questions. VonC often takes a bit of a guess in his answers, too. It's how he taught himself in the beginning (he's explained this in the SO blog post from a few years ago). Maybe this is an opportunity for him to start using his other curation tools. :) It's no secret he's been answering a bunch of duplicate questions instead of closing them.
@peterh It is truly mind-boggling how one can produce so many answers every single day.
@peterh As far as I can see, he's still around. I've seen some comments from him on MSO recently, too, so at least he's still paying attention. But there's a limit to how long the same thing can keep interesting oneself.

@ShadowWizardLoveZelda a "deep ideological gap and the wide rift between the secular and pluralistic views" exists in two thirds of the countries in the world. I dunno who wrote the original article, but judging by your translation, it's very alarmist.

@ShadowWizardLoveZelda Right, but I disagree that Hamas will continue to exist and that there is no way to prevent it from returning if it is eliminated (I hope that happens as soon as possible)

As-salamu alaykum (Arabic: ٱلسَّلَامُ عَلَيْكُمْ, as-salāmu ʿalaykum, Arabic: [as.sa.laː.mu ʕa.laj.kum] ), also written salamun alaykum and typically rendered in English as salam alaykum, is a greeting in Arabic that means 'Peace be upon you'. The salām (سَلَام, meaning 'peace') has become a religious salutation for Muslims worldwide when greeting each other, and is also common among Arabic speakers of other religions (such as Arab Christians and Mizrahi Jews). In colloquial speech, often only salām, 'peace', is used to greet a person. This shorter greeting, salām (سَلَام), has come to be used...
That's how it should be ^

Al-masala-slickum

lol

Al in Arabic is a sort of determiner that typically indicates a definitive 'status' -- my grammar terminology is rusty.

Similar to how "the" is the definite article. When you say "the book", "book" is known to you

I remember confusing with "a" and "an", lol.

"alaikum" = "to you"
So the most common Farsi greeting is actually just "Salam".

@M.A.R. quite the same in Hebrew, the common greeting is the short version.

5:39 PM
@Petəíŕd The Spring Wizard even native speakers struggle with that sometimes. "a" or "an" hour?

@M.A.R. My sources say a hour
But the correct is "an", of course ;)

You shouldn't care about the spelling, just the sound. "hour" sounds like "our", so it gets an "an"

Haha I TTS'ed "a hour" and it makes no sense lol

Yeah the two consecutive glottal stops sound ugly

Tbh I always pronounced as "hou:r", with the H hearable ;)

5:44 PM
"hourson"? Haha

@Petəíŕd The Spring Wizard same. It's "Hau-Her" for me.

There's an ELU question about it somewhere
But even if it's legit you shouldn't pronounce it like that, cripes

Hahaha! Try to pronounce "Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers."

@Petəíŕd The Spring Wizard hmm on one hand you started a nice discussion there and sparked some good replies, but on the other hand, you essentially just ask people to send you private messages (the reasoning and actual goal aren't very relevant) and that is usually frowned upon, in any place. I might think how to explain it better, and anyway no harm done - I believe the active users and/or mods there can handle it, and it's obvious you did it in good faith.
And on third hand, the discussion there went really off topic, lol
