I wonder why X freezes like that...
I got CakePHP working... and I hate to admit it... but I kind of like it.

2 hours later…
5:12 AM
Here is what I have so far: quickmediasolutions.com/stackmail/cakephp

6 hours later…
11:26 AM
@GeorgeEdison cool!

2 hours later…
12:59 PM
How long should it take to run a Diff on two files both 2k lines deep?

4 hours later…
4:59 PM
Maybe 2 seconds?

5:12 PM
I stopped it after 8 minutes of chugging

5:40 PM
Weird. Maybe the files have long lines?

that may be so. It's two sql dumps

1 hour later…
6:41 PM
@MarcoCeppi See my beta thread. ask.ubuntu.com isn't an option right now

@JorgeCastro Huh?

Q: Finishing the Beta off strong, the plan so far.

Jorge CastroWith hitting 3000 answers today I thought I'd start looking at we need to finish off. This is an extension of Oli's original question about steering this ship. Mat T from the Canonical design team and Jin from StackOverflow are linked up and working on the design, I expect them to start a threa...

yeah, I noticed that a week or so ago - what brings it up now?

you asked me like 17 hours ago

Oh I was referring to the future
after public release

6:53 PM
I will bring it up at UDS

What I was saying is when this becomes ask.ubuntu, what's the liklihood that this chat platform will replace (or maybe not replace, but become the primary place) for support? do you think the community would be that quick to drop IRC?

though I suspect they'll want to see how it goes for a few months
hah, no way
people love IRC for some dumb reason

Especially if the authoritative place for Q&A is here
that message was also a notification that U.SE will have it's own chat software like this where we can make rooms at chat.askubuntu.com

ah
I prefer this method of chat to be honest
I guess we'll see when people use it

true. I think it would be most epic if this was adopted. Notifications, persistancy, and hooked into the QA site

6:55 PM
yeah, it's pretty awesome
2500+
I can't wait to hit 3000 users!

the stats are getting pretty sad though
visits and new users are on a downward trend :(
page views yesterday hit an all time low

ugh, still?
well, it was a sunday!

haha, that's true
here's the screen cap

oh, you know what

Yesterday was three lower than the previous lower point.
@JorgeCastro what?

6:59 PM
on the top topic thing, when we added the beta bits and the voting we dropped the link to "spread this site"
maybe add that back?

it takes the top 5 active in the featured tag
OR, do you mean on the banner?

the banner is what I meant

I'll add that back in

I need a few mails on the dev list today, maybe that link will bring people in
though the refers still mostly show people coming in from google right?

You know what I did for the first time. Plugged in an HDMI cable and had both the audio (And pristine video) appear on my 37' tv
yes - like 12k
banner's up

7:08 PM
wow nice
I need to try hdmi on mine
I am all set for the boxee box, I have a cable standing by, heh
@MarcoCeppi the banner looks perfect!

cool!

7:28 PM
I am just breaking this poor sales men's mind. I wish they would be more technical in answering my questions.

1 hour later…
8:43 PM
I have an HDMI port but I doubt I could use it... I have a super weird xorg.conf :)

It worked with my ATI card

I'm also not using the nvidia driver... at least I don't think I am.
I still have hardware acceleration... I think. Even though Compiz doesn't work... or maybe that's Xinerama.
It's messed up.
I see we have yet to crack 3k users?

I'm having a hard time getting FGLRX to work on 10.10 due to the ATI driver update that's broken within the kernel

@GeorgeEdison 3k is so doable before launch!

Just gotta step up the hype

8:53 PM
I'm out of steps to step up!

9:23 PM
@Jorge: True... and I can't wait.
Are we still on track for 10/10/10?

Not sure, haven't heard much

9:37 PM
I hope we are. I'm holding off on the Update Manager until then.
Then I'll do a dist-upgrade.

9:50 PM
yeah, we're on track
they're all ready to go, just the design is all we're waiting on

SHOOP-DA-WOOP!

10:05 PM
I love the 'Tabs Menu' extension for Firefox.
I don't know how I survived without it :)
Makes Firefox usable again... though I mostly use Chrome.

This message brought to you by: 2 seconds too late!

I am.
But Chrome doesn't work well with large POST requests.
So I use Firefox for those types of things.
I usually have both browsers open at any given time.

Do you use Ubuntu for your servers?

I don't own any servers.
I have a shared hosting plan.

10:11 PM
It runs CentOS.

figured.

If I ever get my own server, it'll run Ubuntu.
* server edition!

I've always done CentOS servers, Ubuntu desktop

Is CentOS better?
* for servers

only because I hate how ubuntu manages it's software setups and paths

10:12 PM
How so?
Oh, and I have SSH access to 'my' server... it uses Zshell (zsh) :P

The things that always get my "knickers in a twist" when I've used Ubuntu as a server
apache configuration management
I have always known Apache as httpd
(because I'm "classically trained" in managing RH servers)
you've got one httpd.conf in /etc/httpd/
and that's the way it should be IMO not this crazy /etc/apache2 sites enabled, sites disabled stuff
but honestly - it's "the same thing", I've just always used CentOS/RH for servers

Hmmm... but then how can a script add or remove modules from httpd.conf?
The way ubuntu does it, you just create a symlink.

yum remove
:P
I also ended up scripting my own Apache configuration generation tool

Seriously though... how does a shell script remove or add lines to the file?
I almost forgot about yum... haven't heard of it since I used to use Fedora :)
Still got a VM for Fedora lying around somewhere.

11:18 PM
Just converted another person to ubuntu

Q: What is the strangest, most controversial thing you've heard about Linux or Ubuntu?

JasonCook599The title explains it: "What is the strangest, most controversial thing you've heard about Linux or Ubuntu?". Let us know what the weirdest thing you've heard about Ubuntu or Linux. If you have a link to a forum post, video, etc. that would be cool too.

vote to close!
@MarcoCeppi look at a2enable and crew
the debian way of doing apache is so awesome

@JorgeCastro You know when a moderator votes to close it's autocloses no matter what

eeewww = httpd sysconfig boooo.

I know about a2enable, etc

@MarcoCeppi finish it off!

11:26 PM
HEAD SHOT!
Well I'm setting up another production machine, and for this one I'm going between Ubuntu or CentOS.
the 82 other servers I run are all CentOS - so you can see how this would be a big leap. All my automation tools, everything, based around CentOS/RPM
but, maybe I'll run with Ubuntu this time.

I always go with what I'm comfortable with
I grew up in the debian world so the whole RH way of doing apache stuff is the opposite to me as it is with you
I like the split config files, etc.

Yeah, when I started I was running Debian desktops and Redhat servers
Now that I'm all grown up it's CentOS servers and Ubuntu desktops

11:53 PM
I wonder how many people use FreeBSD...

A lot more than you would think

I just read an old comparison of Linux vs. FreeBSD vs. Win 2k
Hilarious!

Real quick - before I ask on U.SE - how do I change the port Evolution uses for checking mail?
