5:34 AM
hi Jorge

13 hours later…
6:53 PM
how now brown cow?

Slowly and patiently...

7:06 PM
hi everyone!
@lfaraone Do you know if there's a way we can point Meta people here without having to ask a question?
I think it would be handy for us to discuss things in here in real time

hm, maybe we can get a sitenotice about it.
although I think some people may prefer IRC.

sure
but if we're going to do SE I think we should try their methods of doing this, I can be open minded!

I have created an IRC channel #ubuntu-stackexchange
but pssst!!!!.. We do not want to wake up all the ops :D

I think we should try this for a while

I think at this point, manually pointing people here is the way. It is still in beta and changing daily.

7:10 PM
it seems friendlier than IRC to me
and will encourage people who aren't participating in IRC to add their ideas
you shouldn't have to know what IRC is to participate in Meta ubuntu!

While I like IRC, this has some major advantages over it.

I'm not a big fan of IRC anymore. This seems more structured - and the interface more intuitive

Hi Marco!

Hi everybody! I just managed to stumble into this chat.meta never knew this was here on SO

@MarcoCeppi It is relatively new and still in beta.

7:14 PM
@GeorgeMarian Then that explains it all

@MarcoCeppi I stumbled on it last night and made the room
I am assuming that chat.meta.ubuntu.stackexchange.com will exist some day?

I'm not sure about that actually - it seems to be only SO centric
Great - now it's one more thing to distract me at work.

I believe the intention is to have something like this for every site.

Just remember people who don't have rep of 20 in meta.stackoverflow.com cannot participate here

@txwikinger IIRC, we will have the ability to invite specific people to specific rooms to deal with that very issue, as needed.

7:16 PM
which can be a bit of a downer - but most people get the auto 100+ point for association of other EX sites

@GeorgeMarian ok.. sounds good

Aside from social pleasantries, how does chat.meta help?
I feel a chat room would detract from the purpose of the Q&A site

Not sure... I miss the notifications IRC gives me

@MarcoCeppi Some questions are best answered ineractively. I.e. they need to be hashed out. Like a debugging session.

it's not meant for questions I think
you don't get points, etc.
I think it's for things like "hey guys, I am waiting for the design guys to get back to me about a theme for the site" kind of thing

Q: Use cases for chat

BenjolMaybe this is a duplicate of another question, it's certainly something which I've seen discussed in a few chat rooms, but I thought it would be interesting/useful to have reactions in one place. How do you see yourself using chat, longterm? (once you've finished messing around with dancing gifs...

what does the 101 mean?

@txwikinger Eh? 101 rep?

How well are these chats archived? For instance if a legit question like "There is black smoke billowing from my Ubuntu Laptop - it is running 9.04 - will upgrading fix this?"

under Jorge Castro's post here

@MarcoCeppi Quite well so far. Scroll to the top and you'll see a transcripts button.

7:21 PM
Can the chat be referenced for answers - or how are legitimate questions moved out of here - other than asking the author to move to the Parent site

Plan is to freeze rooms with out activity, in order to maintain the history.
There's also a search feature for transcripts.
Check it out for chat-feedback: chat.meta.stackoverflow.com/search?room=77

@GeorgeMarian Thanks I'll have to take a peek

Is there a way to move my existing answer to another question?
I duped the "how do we promote" question unintentionally

@JorgeCastro I know there is a moderator merge tool - well i just found out about such a tool. So there may be a way to merge the two questions...

7:26 PM
@JorgeCastro: how feasible would ask.ubuntu.com be?

very

@JorgeCastro: it won't conflict with, say, launchpad answers?

also, I am working with the lp guys about investigating shutting down LP answers
since it's unmaintained

Yeah.. you just need to sit on an admin to change the DNS records :D

and the lp guys really want to get rid of it

7:27 PM
@JorgeCastro: hehe, yeah. I can see why. we tried using that for SL a while back. nobody liked it :)

I think both LaunchPad answers and USE have different cases though

what do we do with the lp answers history?
also.. answers is multi-lingual

@txwikinger yeah so there would be alot of issues to discuss there
migration, etc.

@txwikinger: I'm sure it'll be archived.

or perhaps just having new questions on SE and leave the old stuff in an archive

7:28 PM
In addition it's typically more geared towards softwares in LaunchPad though?

there is also ubuntu.shapado.com btw.. that is multi-lingual

@MarcoCeppi yeah when I mean Answers I mean Answers for the Ubuntu project

@JorgeCastro: ooh, migration would be interesting... but the issue is that SE is CC-Wiki licensed.

not every project on LP

I see - was mistaken

7:29 PM
@lfaraone there would be a ton of issues, but I've only started talking to LP people today about it
and in general they seem to not-like Answers
and they don't have anyone working on it

well.. lp is open source now :p

@txwikinger: the content, I mean.

@MarcoCeppi Yes .. I have the source on my laptop

@txwikinger But it's not released? Or is it?

I think if we sorted the licensing it wouldn't be hard to import all open questions in LP to SE, both have APIs. :)

7:31 PM
@MarcoCeppi: of course it is.

it's a whole bunch .. and does not work on a standard apache deployment

@MarcoCeppi: canonical even misspelled my name when they credited me for submitting a patch.
@JorgeCastro: maco told me to start calling you "George" to make up for it.

indeed, heh

That's interesting because I've done something similar with Git and RPMs for CentOS deployment at my old job - is there a link to this magic?

click on "Code" and go nuts!

7:33 PM
of course, Git will never* be supported in LP.

launchpad.net/launchpad-project actually I think

the devs I've talked to say "it's not a technical decision" , and the non-technical people I've talked to say it's not part of the strategy.

never say never

which, for Sugar Labs at least, prevented us moving our hundred or so repos to LP.

@lfaraone Yes yes - I realize that - Bzr is the flavor of the month, not only that but it's also a Canioncal baby
I've ended up trying to support creation of deb files in my small farm by making the RPMs first then using alien
and as you can imagine that was a nightmare

7:34 PM
@MarcoCeppi: hehe. we do have git-buildpackage...

sounds like a religious war to me

@txwikinger: i use them both, personally.

@lfaraone I do too

@txwikinger sacralige to some

/me mutters something about VI

7:36 PM
@MarcoCeppi not my problem

Anyways - this should give me something else to poke at

hmm
do you guys think anything other than ask.ubuntu.com would be popular?

hi Dan

heh ubuntuoverflow

ask.u.c feels very tshirt-able

7:39 PM
I'd wear it

@JorgeCastro: well, that's the most popular suggestion. If it weren't possible, I'm sure the community would come up with something.

it is possible if we can pin down an admin to change the DNS :D that is usually th eproblem

They likely won't consider it until we're out of Beta

canonical admin that is

but by then it'll be a smashing success. :)

7:41 PM
hm. I'd prefer a [message redacted]

@lfaraone [message redacted]

rofl.
@JorgeCastro: you've talked with RobertCartaino from SO, right?

yes
I sent him a mail
I've been hoping for a response ASAP. :)

@JorgeCastro I added a bit to that e-mail

I saw, thanks

7:54 PM
anyway, I'm out for a bit. as always, I'll continue to be on IRC.
