A: Help has non-HTTPS links in it

Yaakov EllisI updated the help pages linked here and replaced all occurrences of http:// with https:// that I could find. so many links need manual updating now it is quite irksome

Just to clarify - the /help/on-topic sites (from the Glorfindel's answer) still remain http rather than https - those should be fixed by the mods on the individual sites, right? On an unrelated note: If somebody finds some other occurrences where https is missing, those should be reported as a new separate bug report? Or as a new answer here? — Martin 31 mins ago
Actually I still see http here: "Do not use meta-tags in questions." (In help/tagging.) So I wonder whether (status-completed) wasn't a bit premature. And I still see http rather than https in help/dont-ask - that was the example mentioned by the OP. Does it take some time until the changes propagate to all sites? — Martin 26 mins ago
I just fixed /tagging. /dont-ask I dont see anymore. If I fix the mse main article, it is automatic for all sites that didnt customize the article. Any site that customized needs to be updated manually on that site. — Yaakov Ellis ♦ 12 mins ago
We can continue this in chat if that's better to avoid a long comment thread. I still see http rather than https in /dont-ask on a few random sites I've tried: Math Educators, Mathematics, Physics. — Martin 12 secs ago

@Martin I dont have an easy way to fix every per-site help page that are customized. Each has to do by hand

@YaakovEllis But you just said that dont-ask should be fixed automatically also on other sites after you fixed it here...?

rewrite-url tool only works on questions and answers, would need to be extended for help posts. Which actually would need a brand new tool (since help posts are stored in a totally different db
I fixed dont-ask on MSE
which auto-fixes anywhere that didnt customize it
if a site didnt customize, then they get the mse template
they dont have their own copy

So why is it still http on every site where I tried?
Is it caching?

@Martin because lots of sites customized?

I've just tried the same three sites in wget rather than browser - so I suppose that it's not caching.
@YaakovEllis But this particular site (dont-ask) isn't mod-editable, right?
So that means that only SE employees can actually edit that.

12:19 PM
which one?

dont-ask

which site?

Any sites I try - but in particular, the three I've mentioned above.
Mathematics, Physics, Math Educators
Let us take some site at random - arduino is the same: arduino.stackexchange.com/help/dont-ask
TBH it seems rather surprising to me if every random site that I tried has dont-ask customized at some point in the past.
So far the only exception I was able to find was Science Fiction & Fantasy - that one has https in dont-ask: scifi.stackexchange.com/help/dont-ask
BTW when I tried help/tagging on the same sites, I see https. So that one seems to be fixed. (At least on the sites which I tried.)

ok, fixed it

Thanks for looking into that.

12:31 PM
Apparently I needed to edit it in a different way to propagate network-widwe
and the first time I edited dont-ask on mse, I actually made an mse fork and not a template change
fork deleted, template change done

@YaakovEllis I am not sure how likely it is - but if I mange to find some other http links (either on Meta Stack Exchange or on per-site-meta on some site which isn't mod editable), should I post it as a new bug report?

ping me here if I am still pingable
I would rather avoid having an MSE post for every time someone finds one of these, though I get it

I will be testing on Mathematics.
So far I have asking-rate-limited: math.stackexchange.com/help/asking-rate-limited "If you haven't yet done so, please read our advice on how to ask good questions, both general and site-specific." The latter is http rather than https.
I suppose this one was customized - I do not know whether it can be edited by mods. But this is different - it did not propagate from the "central" template.

@Martin I fixed the template

The other's that I see are badges math.stackexchange.com/help/badges and how-to-ask math.stackexchange.com/help/how-to-ask - but let me check in detail to make sure.

12:39 PM
question-bans has an http, but that is intentional - the site it points to doesnt have an SSL setup

On badges math.stackexchange.com/help/badges I get: "Followed the Area 51 proposal for this site before it entered the commitment phase". (Maybe the same thing might be in other places with the description of the Precognitive badges...?)

badges is fine in the template
fixed how-to-ask

So both badges and asking-rate limited need to be fixed on Mathematics separately? (I.e., they were probably customized at some point?)
When I tried some other page random - Physics has http on badges, too: physics.stackexchange.com/help/badges
In any case, I should probably try to come up with some reasonable approach which could help me check multiple sites in the help center automatically - rather than manually. And after I will try to notify you here in chat.
(Since I already had the sites mentioned above, I have posted at least those.)

I am querying the db, just fixed 10 other templates
10 more to go
done. all templates fixed

So I assume that the "area51" link on badges is taken from somewhere else? (From the description of the precognitive badge?)
When I try some random site arduino.stackexchange.com/help/badges this is a place where I see http.
When I now tried Physics, I get badges, notation, on-topic, question-bans. The last one is expected. The pages notation and on-topic were probably customized.

12:55 PM
@Martin yeah, that's a code fix
comes from an attribute in code. I'll fix that separately (will take some hours to show up)
I updated my answer, deleted our comments

Ok, so I suppose I do not have to put a bug-report on Meta Stack Exchange about /badges/.
On Mathematics I now get http: in these pages - asking-rate-limited, notation, on-topic. searching. (And also on badges and question-bans - but you have mentioned that this is to be expected.)
So I suppose that the remaining pages on Mathematics which still have http (instead of https) are the pages which have been customized - so that is probably something to be discussed with the local mods on that site.
I see - you have basically answered this in your edit:
> Any help pages that are out there with http:// links should now just be on site-customizations (please go to the mods on the relevant site directly for fixing those).
Thanks for looking into this (and for your patience)!

1:15 PM
I'll check a bit later whether the badges page was actually fixed as mentioned above: math.stackexchange.com/help/badges

Thanks once again! And see you later!
