@amWhy the dupe target was not ideal as a faq. If there is a current question that could be used we can promote one. If not somebody could write one at some point.
@amWhy did you try what I recommended? It does not look like it.
If you want your profile to say that you are suspended on the parent site you might want to make sure that your parent site matches the one where you are suspended.
Differently, if it would say what you propose it would also be confusing.
It'd have to say still something else like: "The user is suspended on what had been their parent site, but was changed in the interim."
Anyway, I change your chat parent now to math.se. Let's see if the reason gets updated.
@quid short? It's 8 days ban.... and yes, looks like it overrides the parent site suspension banner.
Never saw such a long ban due to flags, from what I remember each confirmed flag "gives" 30 minutes suspension, so it means there were 2*24*8=384 (!) flags.... something here is very fishy.
@ShadowWizardWearingMask Maybe I did not paraphrase it clearly enough. There is an "inherited" ban from the parent site and in addition there is a 30 minutes flag induced ban that came in while already suspended. Thus almost all of that ban is inherited. But the latest seems to dictate the reason given.
There was/is an inherited ban of a duration of several days until time X. If then a flag comes in the ban gets extended until time X + 30 mins and the reason gets updated.
@QueenieGoldstein I mean that flag bans get added to the duration of inherited bans.
Update ChatUser Set BanReason='This user has been automatically suspended for posting inappropriate content and cannot chat for @duration` Where Id=@user
And there's no timed job to update this back to previous reason ^
@ShadowWizardWearingMask as explained "This is correct for the 30 minutes of the automated ban, however the banner never gets back to what it was before" is misleading. There is no separate ban. There is always just one.
The ban durations are added and the reason is that of the last-issued ban.
You also might add a "preexisting" before chat messages. To avoid users getting confused how a chat message could be posted while being banned.
@amWhy it a bit convoluted, yes, but initially there was no chat suspension and there still is not any of a relevant length; about two days into your suspension it seems one comment got flagged and this added 30 minutes. It could be relevant to keep this in mind as once you get unsuspended on main you'd still have that extra 30 mins in chat.
@amWhy As I read the logs, you were first suspended from chat for two weeks as a result of the suspension on Math SE (this actually surprised most of the moderating team, as we thought that your chat parent site was Math Educators SE).
Not long after that, your chat suspension was extended by 30 minutes because of a chat flag.
Thus the suspensions are sequential, not concurrent.
@Xander I did absolutely nothing wrong in chat last Monday, but handle a disruptive user who was subsequently suspended, but not before I cast one chat flag against him.. I should have learned about the thirty minute chat suspension when it was occurred, not long after the fact. Mods have a convenient way of shrugging their shoulders and saying "this is the fact of the matter."
@XanderHenderson It was my parent site.
When the action to suspend me from chat was wrong. "Don't rock the boat": The mod's mantra. Of course you must concur with all actions SE, as a mod, but don't try to change the facts of the matter.
@amWhy The 30 minute chat suspension for "inappropriate content" was automatically applied. Someone flagged one of your comments, and the flag was validated by users from the general voting public.
For the record, the flagged comment was deleted more than a day after your suspension on the main site.
@XanderHenderson I appreciate your willingness to explain things far better than @quid ever did, to me. I don't like where this leaves me, but it seems SE once again leaves me powerless. Maybe this chatroom should read "whatever, Xander, backup plan" because you're surely more present than the absconding namesake for the current chat-room owner.
@amWhy I really do understand your frustration, and I sympathize with your situation---in particular, the fact that the listed chat suspension reason is misleading feels like a bug in the system to me.
For the record, the weirdness regarding the misleading message has been discussed with one of the community moderators, but I don't think that I can report on any resolution of the issue. It is above my pay grade.
