A: When will the 2015 Community Moderator Election begin?

Brad LarsonThere isn't any election currently planned for 2015. The last couple of elections were triggered by departures of existing moderators, along with a steady growth in flags. While we've had changes in activity level of current moderators throughout the year, I'm not aware of any outright departur...

> Therefore, it's hard to predict when more moderators might be needed. We typically only find out about a moderator election a day or two before the rest of the site does, so they might start tomorrow or we might not have any in 2015.
That answer basically says, "It's not up to mods, it's up to CMs"
And that they've been experimenting with ways to keep the queue down other than just throwing more mods at it, you get diminishing returns by doing that

@bjb568 Not unless you specify how the polynomial approximation is obtained. There are various methods.

It's in the Taylor poly part of my notes

user259867
Okay, so the polynomial is the nth degree Taylor... then the statement is still incorrect, because the error also involves (x-a)^(n+1) which may be positive or negative. The sign of error comes from the (n+1)th derivative somewhere between x and a, multiplied by (x-a)^(n+1). So there are a few cases to consider.

Assuming the n+1th deriv is either positive or negative on he whole domain tho?

user259867
No, look at (x-a)^{n+1}. Simplest example: n=0, the Taylor polynomial is just the constant f(a). If the function has f'>0, it's above the polynomial on one side and below on the other.
So: with (n+1) derivative positive, the error has the same sign as (x-a). With negative, it has the opposite sign.

Wait, but a tangent line (degree 1) will be over concave downs and under concave ups (second deriv)

user259867
@bjb568 Yes. if n=1, then n+1 is even, and (x-a) to even power is always >=0. So: for n odd your observation is correct.

Oooh
so for even, multiply by sign of n-a?

it seems like a kind of frustating. I don't care about the -2 . But consider if a question receives 3 answers where each answer got 1 upvote. In that timem, downvote on my answer makes the op to not to accept mine. It's frustating.

4:20 AM

There is only one form of "untraceably effective"/"effectively untraceable" downvoting: if somebody doesn't like you, they can always upvote all the other answers and ignore yours. :-)

Also, I didn't say you can't write comments. Don't read them, though (although there are notable exceptions).
For example, the comments on Ars Technica are exceptionally good.
