@Tim Regulator Headquarters.

Happiness is cooked cod, at least if you ask my cat

@LasseVKarlsen That's some spoiled cat.

We don't use the "S"-word here

@LasseVKarlsen ?

"Spoiled"
We don't use that word

6:04 PM
@LasseVKarlsen Why not?

I guess that's a norwegian kinda term that's not in use other places in the world :P

Tim
Oh, duh.
*makes mental note*

When Norwegians say "We don't use the X word here", it basically means that we're well aware of the fact, but we'd like you to keep quiet about it :)
So basically, shush

@LasseVKarlsen
(tl;dr version: the problem with Regulator Headquarters is that nobody goes there, and people will continue not going there until more people start going there.)

I've give "OnStartups" another chance... wonder if this will get closed..

Q: How to deal with a contract for a job that is over-due and out-of-scope?

FoscoI executed a contract at the end of May for a relatively small web application. It listed 3 main features/requirements and a due date of July 15th. It is October 8th and it is still on-going. I have a meeting with them in 3 hours to discuss the contract. To provide a little more detail, it's ...

6:14 PM
That's the main problem with having a thousand Q&A sites popping up
People won't go there until it got a sizable population already
So I understand perfectly the problem of having unit-testing.SE.com, OOP.SE.com, trycatchblocks.SE.com, if-statements.SE.com, thenumber42.SE.com

@PopularDemand he's so wrong about the paper companies though...
@LasseVKarlsen what about jQuery.SE.com ?

You can never have enough jQuery
And there's plenty of jQuery-questions on SO already
I don't see the need for a site only for jQuery-questions

that'd be ridiculous

@LasseVKarlsen "thenumber42.SE.com"... you mean Yahoo! Answers?

No, that would be thenumber17.SE.com
some random number without meaning
I wonder if I can kick some life back into my laptop
Want to go watch some TV Series, but this desktop machine is a bit away from the telly
Perhaps I should look at installing Ubuntu on it again

6:20 PM
rut roh... @balpha's back

mystery voice I'm always around

Mys - teeeeeeeeer - ious!
Ya gots ta wiggle yer fingers when ya say it!

I inspired this song:
(ignore the blatant piracy ad)

@Fosco How so?
I know nothing about the paper industry.

@PopularDemand Wood is a completely sustainable resource and we have more trees now than ever. There is no deforestation.

6:25 PM
@rchern That's really awesome
Very nice job. Looks really slick now

@Fosco I don't think I've ever heard anyone say that before.

@PopularDemand The US has far more trees now than in the 1700s/1800s
Paper trees are a cash crop

@PopularDemand Sad, huh?... look it up if you like. There's a lot of shitty scare-tactic environmental nonsense out there.

hehehe thanks!

@Fosco and @PopularDemand rainforest hardwoods are not

6:27 PM
@rchern awesome.. that looks great!

:) @balpha did you just make that?

i'm open to more feature requests

yeah -- not a political statement, I just felt reminded :)

nice

6:29 PM
o:

Does viewing your own question count as a view?

@Feeds is showing in the user list?

There has got to be an app for making LOLimages.

@rchern and I thought I was imagining it

@rchern I tried talking to it twice yesterday, but got no response.

Q: Does viewing your own question add to its view count?

Petey BDoes viewing your own question add to its view count?

6:30 PM
@PopularDemand, how rude!

Now that looks sweet @rchern. But I think maybe I should move it to the footer

ah, I know why feeds showed up

Tim
@balpha Is it a sign of the apocalypse?

not quite :)
Marc has finally implemented the OneBox refreshing for expiring content
like the Amazon stuff

the say what now?
ah

6:34 PM
(Amazon doesn't allow you to store their API content without updating for more than 24 hours)

so did it just update something in here?

Tim
Ah, well, it should appear then too. I like to be promptly notified about impending doom.

@rchern yeah
someone must have looked at an older transcript
(it just updates on demand)

@PopularDemand Thanks

@Tim That would have been the easter egg for the Apocalyptic Defense SE chat, but alas, we'll never see it.

6:35 PM
@PopularDemand LOL

Tim
Hah :P

I think chat transcripts should reverse-onebox when pasted in SOFU questions/answers
And rooms, etc

Now there's a movie. The apocalypse comes, and Jeff spends the rest of his days wishing Apocalyptic Defense SE hadn't been deleted.

oy

@rchern Sorry, am I ruining your day?

6:38 PM
uh, no?

@rchern Oh, good. I seem to be eliciting more negative reactions from you than usual.

I CAN HAS TITLE TAG
OK, time to call one client, then work on XMPP again!

6:44 PM
in XMPP, 7 mins ago, by The Unhandled Exception
I hereby take the rest of the day off to work on XMPP integration!!

@balpha After I call one client ;-)

got 1 good answer so far on my onstartups question.. cool

{] is hard to see with the black theme

@rchern So's the bottom of the SF icon.

7:09 PM
God damn.. Joel Spolsky's strategy letters are great!

Which one have you read now? :)

1, 2, and 3.. are there more?

Well, a quick google search comes up with joelonsoftware.com/articles/StrategyLetterV.html
So I guess, yes, there should be more?

VI is for suckers
Emacs baby
Emacs...

7:18 PM
Haha, my fat fingers just produced this: chat.meta.stakoverflow.com

Good ol' stakoverflow

Whatever happened to the tag statistics pages (e.g. stackoverflow.com/tags/c/stats)?

slaps @LasseVKarlsen

It's where all the kwestions go

ah.. thanks.. reading this one right now which pegs me to a tee (at least this week) joelonsoftware.com/articles/fog0000000339.html

7:19 PM
You got stackoverflow.com for questions and answers
And stakoverflow for kwestions and ansers

Tim
@MatthewFlaschen They've been renamed as "top users", I believe

(In other words, Tim was right.)

Thanks, Tim. :)

Tim
No problem. :)
Feeds and a sock puppet, in a single day? This is too much.

LOL
I'll make sure he behaves, don't worry @Tim ;-)

7:23 PM
@TheUnhandledException YOU SHUT UP!!! I HATE YOU

@JoshsSocks Be nice now, or I'll wash you again!

....sorry @Tim... I'll behave, I promise

Tim
@JoshsSocks Good, good.

@PopularDemand - Hurray a list I am on
at the bottom :(

Tim
7:27 PM
Cool :)

@JoshsSocks Argyle? Classy.

@PopularDemand It my logo poorly composited on a sock :-)

smelly

@TheUnhandledException Yes, I can see that. But it looks argyle.

@PopularDemand It does. I have a black belt, too
@JoshsSocks: Leave now please

7:47 PM
Great, now I have seen these tag-toplists, im going to have to answer questions again!

hmm, just started watching the season premiere of Smallville, season 10
is it bad that I don't remember any of the "last time on ..." tidbits? :P
Guess I'll have to download the last couple of episode and see how much I missed
ho hum, "And now, the final season of Smallville"

Shameless, futile self-promotion:

Q: Can Wicket have AJAXified drop-down menus?

Lord TorgamusI need to make a web page with Wicket that lays out the following table: +------------+---------+ | Category | Value | +------------+---------+ | CatA | ValA | +------------+---------+ | CatB | ValB | +------------+---------+ | CatC | ValC | +------------+--------...

new badge today... sql. woo!

@Fosco Congrats!
@PopularDemand I don't know what Wicket is but +1 for a well worded question
:224982 Fine be that way

> With proper mark-up/logic separation, a POJO data model, and a refreshing lack of XML, Apache Wicket makes developing web-apps simple and enjoyable again. Swap the boilerplate, complex debugging and brittle code for powerful, reusable components written with plain Java and HTML.

8:01 PM
;-)

Sounds TERRIBLE. :-D

@Fosco Could be worse. Could be ASP... ;-)

@TheUnhandledException Thanks, I didn't even think that was my best work. And I'd rather have an answer. But at least I'm a single digit of upvotes away from 2k! (Assuming a base 10 number system.)

@PopularDemand Yeah, again I would rather have given you an answer
But +5 "exp" is the best I could give ;-)

I'd like an up-vote or two for this:: answers.onstartups.com/questions/14901/…
people are stingy

8:03 PM
Note to self: ask four new questions every day and present them to Josh for serial upvoting.

@AidenBell I'm dense, what am I looking at?

@PopularDemand Red circles indicate lack of work to do ... they get smaller ... hence I get better at finding stuff to do each time I need to

Tim
@PopularDemand Presumably his reputation increases at a much greater rate when he's in between projects, so the shorter the period of increase, the better his job hunting skills..I guess.

@Tim spot on
I though it was interesting lol

8:06 PM
@AidenBell very cool :)

Oh, that kind of "finding work."
Congrats, then!

@PopularDemand , @Tim, @Fosco - All my reputation graph shows, is the glory that may have resulted if I kept my initial pace up :(

yeah that would be awesome, but I'm sure you're better off this way

@AidenBell Meh. What's the difference between 10k and 40k, really?

@PopularDemand 30k

8:12 PM
.. bout 30k?
:D

Just retire, hang out on the flags page all day and give someone else a chance.

gloats in his obvious subtraction superiority
2

@MichaelMrozek That was pretty good work; subtracting five digit numbers in your head. I assume it was in your head, it was too fast to be calculator-assisted.

@PopularDemand That's pretty much what happened to me, only at about 15k. I go on SO and get distracted by flags, close votes and posts that need to be edited, and I never answer anymore. It's a little depressing really

I seem to recall asking for upvotes... do not appear to have received them.

8:14 PM
@PopularDemand It's the "k" that's tricky, but I could handle it
@Fosco Shocking, that is :). You're lucky you didn't get considerable downvotes

@Fosco If it were on Programmers SE, I would have, but I'm not creating an account just to upvote you.

I upvote anything posted by a chatter in here.

oh well in that case, let me grab some links for you...

@rchern you have 15 minutes before I leave for the day.

8:16 PM

I wonder if this beats the "longest asking of a simple question"

A: What are good Linux distributions (and methods) for developing the latest Linux upstream (kernel, Gnome etc.) packages?

Aiden BellGet involved with a distro, focus on the packages you want to improve Distros ensure that package versions work well together. This is the first job in building a Linux system and they have already done it. They ensure that everything "fits". If you want to improve a package, then do the improvem...

Tim
@AidenBell Heh, I just try and keep my rep/day above 30 (an arbitrarily chosen limit)

Hm, why didn't my link onebox?

@PopularDemand the @PopularDemand

Oh, I typed the name, it wasn't a reply. Never mind.

8:17 PM
More and more sites drops anonymous commenting these days

OK, well I am off for the day. Blame @balpha for my not finishing XMPP integration :-)
New code is in the works though!

@TheUnhandledException Byes

@AidenBell +1

Later @AidenBell

@Fosco - How kind sir
That question is like a novel

8:20 PM
@AidenBell I wonder if it would fit better on Unix/Linux, or Programmers.

@PopularDemand - Possibly programmers, but he is talking about package clash headaches and compiling more than anything

@balpha so long and thanks for all the eggs!

@PopularDemand - Sort of inbetween but a bit subjective all the same

@AidenBell Okay. I stopped caring after the title on that one, it's too late in the day.

lol

8:25 PM
bye all, have a nice weekend

@fosco - bye

Tim
Bye @Fosco, @TheUnhandledException

8:42 PM
