Q: Reputation extravaganza (500) - most useful Java posters?

bestsssThis is not a standard question regarding some programming problem/issue. It might be considered to be moved to Meta Stack Overflow or just closed as noise. I ask, please, leave it here. There are very few people attending Meta Stack Overflow and it will shrink the audience. The question is very...

"More on the extravaganza: this is the first of a few questions that are to feature lavish bounty, so stay tuned."

@badp Wait, you closed hat-faces as OT?! Sorry man - I don't think you can handle MSO.
Gotta say, for a site about games, you guys really hate fun.

I have the high score in fun-hating.

Q: What's the total rep cap limit on Suggested Edits?

Conrad FrixAccording to How do suggested edits work? the limit is 1,000. When a suggested edit is approved, the user who suggested it gets +2 reputation. The regular daily reputation cap applies, and the total cap is 1,000. However at least one user has exceeded 1000 points earned from suggested edi...

I think it's a right-to-left Unicode control character at the end of the user name

Q: I messed with DOS

Judy QuinnI went into DOS and changed some "things" without knowing what I was doing. How do I restore it to its original format. When I boot up it requires me to pres F1 to continue ever since I "messed" with it. thanks

I mean, really?

@Chris his earlier comment doesn't appear the same way though

@JasonPlank Maybe he changed it?
@amanaPlanaCAnalPAnaMA Care to explain?

@Chris perhaps, but I thought it worked differently, i.e. you only see the latest revision
in any case i was intrigued to see <naps/> in the source, haha

@JasonPlank Oh, good point. Hm.

2:43 AM
@Chris i wonder if he was posting from dos

Heh
@JasonPlank You know, on second thought I think that @aman posted that Unicode control character at the end of his comment, mucking things up

Anonymous
Aw, the big anti-EE post alleging all kinds of nasty things was deleted.

@Chris it's definitely somewhere in that comment, you can see it in the source on his user activity page too
yeah, you're right @Chris, it's E2 80 AE, aka "right to left override"
inserted right at the end of the comment

pretty novel trick, good placement too :)

I seem to remember @balpha teaching him how to do that, but I could be wrong...

Anyone know what happened to Dori and HedgeMadge? They seem to have disappeared off the radar... meta.stackoverflow.com/posts/99341/revisions

they no longer work for SE @Benjol

@Sathya, yeah, I got that far on my own... :) They've completely stopped participating as well, that's the bit that makes me suspect the 'no longer' may not have been 'by mutual consent'. I guess I shouldn't be asking for the dirty laundry...

The Streisand effect is a primarily online phenomenon in which an attempt to hide or remove a piece of information has the perverse effect of publicizing the information more widely. It is named after American entertainer Barbra Streisand, whose attempt in 2003 to suppress photographs of her residence inadvertently generated further publicity. Similar attempts have been made, for example, in cease-and-desist letters, to suppress numbers, files and websites. Instead of being suppressed, the information receives extensive publicity and media extensions such as videos & spoof songs, often b...
However, some things are personal, and don't need to be aired out in the open. Note, I have no idea what happened either, I didn't realize HedgeMage was gone as well.

@TimPost It depends. Is the alternative using regexes to validate the input?

I'm absolutely hopeless at the bounty game. All 3 expiring and no answers to award any of 'em to :(

2:09 PM
@JasonPlank what the fruit... why did balpha delete it?
:-(
@Chris :-(
@balpha what is your definition of an answer?

2:25 PM
Generally, an answer is a reply to a question or is a solution, a retaliation, or a response that is relevant to the said question. In law, an answer was originally a solemn assertion in opposition to some one or something, and thus generally any counter-statement or defense, a reply to a question or response, or objection, or a correct solution of a problem. In the common law, an answer is the first pleading by a defendant, usually filed and served upon the plaintiff within a certain strict time limit after a civil complaint or criminal information or indictment has been served upon th...

@balpha but what it says in the faq:
Answers that do not fundamentally answer the question may be removed. This includes answers that are …

- commentary on the question or other answers
- asking another, different question
- “thanks!” or “me too!” responses
- exact duplicates of other answers
- barely more than a link to an external site
- not even a partial answer to the actual question

> not even a partial answer to the actual question
there ya go

And my answer did not fall into anything
yes it was
@balpha then how does this one fall in? meta.stackoverflow.com/a/107514/155556
its the same type of thing

@TimStone so what?
we should PURGE ALL MEME s it seems
@balpha should i continue. there are quite a few that are not related to the community as a whole but are left there. with people having the ability to vote on them as they see fit

2:30 PM
So you're arguing over the fact that @balpha deleted the post that you were willing to delete if @PopularDemand thought you should delete it?
I haven't had coffee yet, but that makes my head hurt.

@TimStone lol no. i did not think it should be deleted
and it seems @PopularDemand did not either. so it was not removed
@TimStone see comments here: meta.stackoverflow.com/a/19496/155556 was that one ever deleted? NO.

I've asked you before to stop making so much noise on meta, both in public and in private. And your only answer to that is "But everyone else is making noise, too!" -- really?

/me cowers in the corner while the big boys argue...

@amanaPlanaCAnalPAnaMA The list at the bottom is in the order in which the sites are launched

@YiJiangsProble_ I realize that. I even said that in the OP
but new users wont know that
and the ordering is confusing

@amanaPlanaCAnalPAnaMA So what's with the title?

@YiJiangsProble_ better?

new title ^^^
@YiJiangsProble also it is getting waaaaaaaay to cluttered there.

It's okay. Have you seen the list in the dropdown menu?
That one is way too cluttered

4:23 PM
lol
@YiJiangsProble_ which dropdown?

The Stack Exchange menu

@YiJiangsProble_ where? (sorry now im confuzzled)

@YiJiangsProble Agreed. It seems to use the "whichever site I'm looking for at the bottom" ordering scheme.

The one on the top left hand corner of every page in the network

@YiJiangsProble_ lol that one is in an even weirder order

4:27 PM
@jadarnel27 Yeah, but you have to use it to switch between beta sites and launched sites
Quite annoying
@amanaPlanaCAnalPAnaMA It lists the ones you're on in order of reputation, then randomly after that

@YiJiangsProble_ thats so dumb...

Hello. Is this the right chat to ask site questions?

@SantaClaus I don't think anyone would disagree with you asking a question (about the site) here. It's a general chat room =)

Q: converting oscillating motion in a video to a frequency

Stuve VillgeI was walking a long in bush and there was this cool breeze coming up the valley. The coolest breeze I have ever felt. Was just wondering why the rejected message for tag wikis was: "This edit is incorrect or an attempt to reply to or comment on the existing post."

@SantaClaus Might help if you also post a link to the suggested edit in question

5:19 PM
@ShawnChin Oh, that is fantastic

@SantaClaus By the way, that's one of the canned reject messages I believe.

Yeah, I marked it as "invalid edit" because the accuracy was pretty dubious, just didn't understand why the message mentioned replies/comments

The edit is "incorrect" or is "an attempt to reply/comment".
Just two separate (but sometimes related) reasons for using the same flag

I'm a little confused where tag wikis come into the picture, since that was a suggested edit on an answer.

5:26 PM
@TimStone Oh wow, it was an answer. I don't know why I thought it was a tag wiki

5:53 PM
Why isn't the [plz-send-teh-codez] blacklisted / banned on SO?
I just edited it out of this post when someone added it.
(I mean...the question is awful, but that tag isn't really necessary)

@jadarnel27
erg. stupid auto completion.
@jadarnel27 Yeah, I don't know why it's not blacklisted either. I'd vote for it if it were a meta issue.

@RobHruska Good to know I'm not alone =) It seems like outright blacklisting is rare, but worth it in this case.

Tags that are not used by any questions are considered nonexistant by the system.

@PopularDemand They get cleaned up / removed nightly, correct?
Although that doesn't prevent them from being used again.

That sounds right.

6:06 PM
@PopularDemand That makes sense. Michael Myers comment on the post just made me think there had been problems with that tag being added back in

@jadarnel27 If you do end up requesting the blacklist, also include [plzsendtehcodez] (no hyphens)

And [tehcodezcanyouplzsendthem]

Haha, indeed. Anything with [plz] in it =)

@amanaPlanaCAnalPAnaMA LOL. I think it is exactly too localized =)

Q: Blacklist the [plz-send-teh-codez] tag?

jadarnel27I think we should blacklist the [plz-send-teh-codez] tag (and possibly variations1 thereof). There are not currently any questions tagged as such (anymore), but at least one user (this person) has been actively trying to resurrect it (1, 2, and 3). All three instances above happened this month....

Just out of curiosity, is there any way to get Google to prioritize Stack Exchange content?
I find that many of Google's top results aren't as good
But it's annoying to type site:*.stackexchange.com at the end of every query

@Chris lol i was abt to say that
@Chris u using chrome or ff?

@amanaPlanaCAnalPAnaMA Firefox

@Chris hmmmm when u can create a new search thing
for ff
well chrome its easier to do
not sure how to do it in ff
you would need to add something like:
http://www.google.com/search?ix=sea&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8&q=site%3A*.stackoverflow.com+%s
where your search replaces the %s
works fine in chrome @Chris

9:22 PM
Thanks, I figured it out
Though it is a bit hackish
(1) Add a new bookmark in Firefox
(2) Change its address to google.com/search?q=%s+site%3A*.stackoverflow.com+OR+site%3A*.stackex‌change.com
(3) Add a keyword ("g", for example)
You can then use the keyword from the "Awesome Bar" to search across the Stack Exchange network
