@JonEricson So now I'm deep into checking this whitespace link thing. I've got all of Metasmoke's database but it's highly skewed in that it only consists of things that SmokeDetector already detected. I'd love a collection of the URLs listed here (all the original text of spam/offensive posts). How can I request this, possibly under an NDA, and be convincing in my request?

7:52 AM
@JasonC if you want to make your life more annoying...
some spammers also try to hide links under periods.

@ShadowWizard I just looked it up again, it's located in Chongqing.

@NormalHuman Latex gloves?
@rene Seems to be good advice ;-)

@NormalHuman you shake the can to break them up, and then pour them into your mouth

@Stijn So the tube's diameter doesn't fit? Just turn the opening downwards, and let gravity work for you.
@Stijn Should I take that as a political statement?

@πάνταῥεῖ I'll try that next time, the tube is empty now :p

@πάνταῥεῖ oh it's cute now, but next time that person tries to eat chips...

6:31 PM
@Stijn Well, gravity still works on at tiny handed people. Heads up! ;-)

And I meant no disrespect to people with hands smaller than mine!
:D

Just tilt he tube and dump it into your mouth.
Pringles are an excercise in control.

The dark matter works slowly it seems, I've read that recently in Sci News
@bjb568 Ah, yes tilt was that frickin' word I was looking for.

:3

@πάνταῥεῖ ahh, I thought you meant I should turn the can upside down and move it up bit by bit :p

@Stijn That's another strategy. Most important though, don't let tiny handed people getting near your Pringles can!

@rene Yeah, is a pretty disappointing tool, I have to agree.

Oh wow I forgot dreamweaver existed.

How so????
Probably not the taste, but different sensations related to haptics and sound?

7:18 PM
@JasonC It's quite a time ago I saw my boss freaking out about that tool, when trying to make a reasonable (and predictable) rendering for our customers' catalogues.
@rene Not me fortunately ;-)

user315433
Seems like some questions were closed because they made the mistake of using a certain tag rather than actually being close-worthy. It feels like a waste of time. Certainly there are bigger fish to fry than well-worded, well-answered, upvoted, programming questions. I think I'll be a little quicker to destroy tags next time. — Jon Ericson ♦ 2 hours ago

user315433
I think the whole "there are some bad questions in the tag, and if the tag is simply removed we will never see them. The horror!" logic should be burninated itself.

yeah, people tend to focus on the bad that was, instead of the bad that is coming RIGHT NOW
like, bad that nobody knew was there.. isn't nearly as bad as the new bad coming in today.

@ɥʇǝS The only constant things I know are: 1. Bad things will come up 2. Everything will change

Regarding empy / whitespace links, @JasonC...
I decided to do a bit of a sanity-check
SQL is not a good tool for parsing HTML, but it does have the advantage of not needing to first compile and index a local database

7:30 PM
@Shog9 should've used regex

So, I ran a simple check for empty links on all posts created in the past 365 days, which would detect an empty link if it was the first or only link in the post.
I found exactly 1 spam-deleted post, out of a total of 203 occurrences; the most common source of these links is images where the author cannot inline an image but has for some reason deleted the boilerplate without replacing it.
But of course, one might easily envision a scenario where a spammer would include multiple links, with the first being visible.
There are probably dozens of bad ways to check for this using SQL, but clearly a recursive CTE is both the easiest and worst.
So that's what I used.
30 days worth of posts on Stack Overflow took nearly 2 minutes to run
and returned 32 results, of which none were spam-deleted and one was offensive-deleted (the link was to a not-inlined image)

7:51 PM
@ɥʇǝS It's a nice feature of that room, that we're allowed to communicate via one-box videos ;-)

@Shog9 I saw extremely similar results running against what was in the Metasmoke database: comment at github.com/Charcoal-SE/SmokeDetector/pull/…
Last night I wasn't entirely convinced that MS was a good representative sample - since it's only what smokey picked up - but more and more it seems close.
To be clear I'm a big naysayer of that white-space only link check. I think it's pointless.
And that was 2 years worth of smokey-detected posts.

It's an extremely poor indicator of spam, but I'm of a mind that we should probably block them simply because there's no good use for them and it would appear that the common case is a new user shooting themselves in the foot.

Yeah, that's why I haven't been like... passionately railing against it. It doesn't really help anything but you can't argue that a link like that ever makes sense.
That said, you'd be adding a filter that so far only would've saved like a couple dozen users shooting themselves in the foot, which generally seem to be corrected soon after by edits anyways.
Area 51 style post filters. Everybody's got to have their own special one to make them feel warm and fuzzy.
You'd have to be careful though. The majority of the small number of links I found like that with some merciless text analysis were e.g. in code blocks and made sense. It'd have to happen after html rendering.

@JasonC I'm not exactly champing at the bit; just something for the TODO pile.
@JasonC I'm not really seeing how an empty link ever makes sense...
(but, I don't know how you were parsing these either)

[ ](...) never makes sense.
I was grabbing the raw html that the se api returns and pulling links with jsoup, so actually parsing them (and also parsing their text after unescaping entities). I didn't use a regex to find links.

8:06 PM
There's already logic to parse out links (for the purpose of limiting new users to n links per post), so I'd want something similar to validate those links (if it ain't clickable, it ain't a link).

Yeah. See the one thing that gets me about it is there's like a zillion ways to make a link that looks blank with your favorite Unicode control characters or weird spaces. So if a user was trying to troll (which was the case in the majority of the few legit cases I found), it's not like they couldn't easily work around it.

A pair of thin spaces with a variation selector in the middle, etc. Even SE's filters now aren't 100% perfect when it comes to space, e.g. zero-width spaces count as characters in comments.
I'd feel different if there weren't an infinite number of ways to make something that looks like a space.

8:23 PM
tl;dr: Unicode ruins everything

Depends on your perspective, lol. If your goal is to annoy, combiners and RTL control characters are like bacon for text.

@πάνταῥεῖ kittens in mugs is so 2000. Time to move on! :D

That reminds me of the kittens in klein bottles controversy.
Someone photoshopped those, some people thought they were real... and got angry :)

@Oded LOL... in Israel?

@ShadowWizard Seems to be I'm late :-P

@ShadowWizard possibly too. Was an early Internet thing.

@πάνταῥεῖ that's a terrifying sentence, coming from a girlfriend........ :D

10:09 PM
Bonsai Kitten was a satirical website which claimed that you could make a "shaped" cat by putting a kitten in a jar and letting it grow into the shape of the jar. It was named after bonsai, a Japanese art in which trees are shaped. The site was made by a university student with the nickname "Dr. Michael Wong Chang". The site claimed that many different shapes and "containment vessels" are possible, including a cube, a sphere, a wire cage, and even a Klein bottle. Supposedly, the kittens are force-fed through a tube, and the kitten's anus is sealed with super glue. == Other websites == Bonsai Kitten...

@ShadowWizard I've got no girlfriend. Just an ex-wife and beloved non-daughter!

@Oded oh, lol.... yeah think it was in one of the first chain emails I remember. Hated those from the first moment, for some reason.
@πάνταῥεῖ non-daughter... meaning her daughter from before she was with you?
If so, nice that you are still in touch. :)

@ShadowWizard She's my daughter of course, forget about that biological part!

@πάνταῥεῖ so why did you use "non"? confused

@ShadowWizard Non biological, but that's not really relevant for my part so far.

10:15 PM
@πάνταῥεῖ oh, so I was right. ;)
Hey, @πάνταῥεῖ you're older than me then? Not many here are. :D

@ShadowWizard Not really, she was one of the reason I divorced with my ex-wfe.

@πάνταῥεῖ the daughter of your wife, which wasn't yours, was a reason to divorce? If you throw such a thing, better give some details.... ;)

@ShadowWizard My beard is quite grey ;-). If I just shave I'd look 10 years younger or so.
@ShadowWizard It's a long (irrelevant) story ;-)

@πάνταῥεῖ so, 40-ish?
I start having grey hairs these days.... :/

@ShadowWizard What's your age? I'm going to get 53 this year.

10:20 PM
@πάνταῥεῖ not fair... you leave me with desire to know the story.... :D
@πάνταῥεῖ nice... so you'll be 14 years older than what I will be in July. :)

@ShadowWizard It's quite complicated, sorry.

@πάνταῥεῖ wrong reply, unless your age is complicated? ;-)
(lol, doesn't really matter, WAG just made me really reply-sensitive ;))

@ShadowWizard Age isn't that much complicated. I'm gonna easing up upon all of that more and more.

@πάνταῥεῖ yup, I know. In 14 years my kids will be almost grown up. Can't imagine that...

Sweet. I'm the only C++ programmer in Brooklyn.

So the story is: My Ex-Wife betrayed me and got pregnant. She disclosed that at any time. We wanted to have a child together, and I still accepted that this way. My Ex-Wife insisted we'll get divorced, and I don't have any relatedness to her daughter.
That somehow threw backwards, since I still have contact to my "non-daughter", and I still support them at a voluntary basis. I'm all fine with that, and I really love my "non daugher"
