SE answer to a question:

A: Why would OKCupid write their own web server?

Chris CoyneThe simplest part of the answer is that we started programming OkCupid back in 2003, which was a special time: It was the dark age of the Internet: a difficult time to raise money, it was harder to make money, and serving costs were still high. This plus the unique technical challenges of OkCup...

@MichaelMrozek Thank goodness for Reddit. I don't have time for all that crap on the SE page.
(Disclaimer: I have never actually used Reddit in my life.)

I used to like Reddit. Similar to how I used to like Digg, and Slashdot. I can't figure out if sites get worse over time, or I just find better sites such that the old ones seem worse by comparison

I liked reddit for a good two weeks or so.

@MichaelMrozek I'm going to go with the standard answer, "it's a little of both."

@mmyers Is this some sort of subtle test of programming discussion/answer software?

Does HN get stories ahead of Reddit now? When I first tried HN it was essentially identical to Reddit but about two days later, so I stopped reading it really fast
So...what? I read that whole thing three times; is it a comment on the wrong link? It has 13 upvotes

On the rare occasions I visit proggit, I often see new submissions that have been on HN for a day or two.
Oh, looky, on the front page right now there's Eric Lippert's WWRFD? article from almost a month ago.
@MichaelMrozek I guess he's referring to this thread.

Hmm. Apparently I should switch. Although I don't know if I can bear to leave my 93 reddit karma behind

Muahaha. I am vastly superior.
I have over 500 karma, if you can wrap your mind around such a staggering sum.

9:18 PM
I have 4846 comment karma. And yet I can't vote to close :(
Ooo, and 112 link karma. Did it appreciate over time?

Oh, I forgot they have separate karma totals. Now you're vastly superior to me.
All I'm good for is submitting links to Shog9's answers.

Bah. I wanted to elevate my concerns about question upvotes to the wider public of chat MSO, after I stopped receiving answers from Aarobot on the mods room, but all I see here is more mods.
And popular demand.

You could visit the English room. It's full of mods.

lmao

10 out of 18 people currently in this room are mods somewhere.

9:27 PM
I resent that. I'm no mod.

@mootinator That's probably due to lack of trying.

Yep.
That's probably at least 1/3 of it.

@mootinator I tried. I got it. You should try. I'm willing to bet it's more like 73.42% of your stopping problem.

9:47 PM
@mmyers does this mean the quality of this room is going up or the quality of our mods is going down? ;-)

@TheOutOfStarsException yes

9:59 PM
@TheOutOfStarsException [closed] subjective and argumentative

See, I can mod!

You're calling me subjective and argumentative? Never!

Can you burninate users with no twinge of regret as you watch the bits melt in the scorching heat...

whoa, better stop there.

Q: Does any economically-feasible publicly available software compare audio files to determine if they are dupes?

drachensternIn the vein of this question http://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/3037/is-there-an-easy-way-to-replace-duplicate-files-with-hardlinks is there any software that will automatically parse a library of my songs and find the ones that really are duplicates that one can be eliminated? Here's an exa...

EVERYONE SHOULD STAR THIS:

TheUnicornNotFoundException
(In that room, of course)

Just to make sure I've got this, you're asking us to star posts in a room you own, so that you can make a decision about your own gravatar by counting the number of stars each suggestion has, even though those stars are a result of you yourself asking people to star them
You realize you could reduce this to "hey, I like TheUnicornNotFoundException. I choose that"

@TheOutOfStarsException Unicorns are never found. They find you.

@MichaelMrozek Yes, I do realize this -- I did that with my current name ;-)

Have any iPhone/iPad users here upgraded to iOS 4.3?

10:19 PM
@Moshe No, I'm still on Windows 7 SP1. Is it an improvement?

@mmyers Heh.

Well, 7 > 4.3

apparently I'm on 4.2.1

@MichaelMrozek Well, iOS > Windows 7 :P

I'm on Android 2.2. I'm so humiliated :(

10:20 PM
@MichaelMrozek Bah, Ubuntu 10.10 > 7

I also apparently have 3,559 songs, 21 videos, 3,749 pictures and 87 apps on my phone. with 1.2GB still free

And AT&T is on 9.0 on their carrier software
@Moshe yes, you can quote well.

@drachenstern I was quoting that for @MichaelMrozek

@Moshe yeah, but you're too slow on the edit ;)

10:21 PM
@drachenstern No, the wifi is too slow on the edit.
Regardless...

lol
you can submit the linkto on the repost of a comment
that doesn't block a OB

10:34 PM
does anybody else repro the area51 link?

@drachenstern Sure

k thanks
can you help me make sure it's not on meta?

Q: Bad profile formatting for area51 badges on related accounts

drachensternhttp://meta.stackoverflow.com/users/130099/ivo-flipse?tab=accounts Not trying to pick on Ivo of course, but his profile was the one I spotted it on. I see it on mine as well, and other have verified. I'll let someone else do the FHC if you don't see it on the area51 badge.

OK, so, can someone explain to me how sending a Content-type heade in PHP can suddenly generate a HTTP/404 NOT FOUND ?

what content-type are you sending?

application/json
LOL, yeah, sure enough, wireshark confirms

10:44 PM
Then it shouldn't affect anything

but yet my JSON data follows, LOL

???
you're posting to a form right?

???
so you're downloading from a get request but you're getting back a 404 with data?
instead of a 200 with data?

yeah
I think i fixed it

10:46 PM
@TheOutOfStarsException Not that it's relevant to your case, but some had that problem with WordPress once. :D

howso?

never seen that before!
@drachenstern by forcing the HTTP status code to be 200
@TimStone AH HA!
@TimStone Client just updated wordpress!

Ohh :P
You may be interested in my answer then ;)

A: jQuery Ajax returning 404 Error, but correct Response

Tim StoneWhen you include wp-blog-header.php, you end up bootstrapping the whole WordPress setup routine. The function wp() is called, which calls $wp->main(), which in turn calls various setup functions. One of these is $wp->query_posts(), which calls $wp_the_query->query(), which in turn calls...

@TheOutOfStarsException that's ... not good.
I mean, it works.

(though probably not what you're doing, who knows :P)

10:48 PM
@drachenstern I changed header('Content-type: application/json',true) to header('Content-type: application/json',true,200)
status-completed

@TheOutOfStarsException yeah, that's uh cheating

works for me

status-going-home-seeya-later-if-you-are-still-around

10:54 PM
See ya :P
@TheOutOfStarsException Nothing's considered cheating when working with WordPress anyway.

@mmyers Then people criticize twitter :P

A: PHP considers null is equal to zero

Microwiselooks to me like is_numeric is much better a solution. also looks to me like i'm a bit too late to respond :/

But that didn't stop them!

Hah, and it looks like the OP never even came back:

Q: How do you pinpoint a word or a selection in the entire document?

vmanHi I am trying to highlight a part of the text on my website. This highlighted text will be saved for the specific user in a database and when the document is opened again it will show the previously highlighted text. I assumed I would be using javascript to highlight the text but I cannot seem ...

@GeorgeMarian you appear just in time

@TheOutOfStarsException I have a way of doing that. ;)

I was just about to email you, LOL

heh
Oh, hey. I just noticed your new name, lol. Was that one of the suggestions?

@GeorgeMarian it was, from Pekka
I love it
IT IS SO ME
also, check your email :-)

11:08 PM
@TheOutOfStarsException Heh, I just got back with my coffee, in time to see the notification window go away. lol

I'm pretty sure this room is all 12-15 year olds

Sweet, sweet Pepsi Throwback. Now, what am I supposed to be doing..

@TimStone Yeah, that's good stuff. And they say that HFC is no different than sugar. Yeah, right...

@GeorgeMarian It's actually gotten to the point where I don't like to drink normal Pepsi anymore, because it tastes crappy, heh.
Like someone sucked the very soul out of the drink shakes head

heh I know what you mean.
So many times i find that it just tastes off. That may not be due to the HFC, just lack of care on the part of the retailer with storage. Still, it's a shame. I don't think much cola these days, but when I do I want it to taste right.

Caffeine runs strong in my veins! I like good coffee too, but my stomach doesn't cope so well with large amounts of warm drink.

You sure it's the warm drink and not the coffee itself?

11:43 PM
I think so, I seem to be fine with iced coffee.

Someone came out w/ a less acidic blend. I'm not sure if it's still on the market, as I haven't seen any ads for it. Granted, I don't watch much tv.
@TimStone How about tea?

oh, a less acidic blend of coffee? whereat?

Yeah, I have the same issue with warm tea too.

please go find it. I could do with less acidic coffee

Though I don't prefer my coffee hot, iced coffee doesn't seem to upset my stomach much.

11:47 PM
ESXi INSTALLER IS LAUNCHING

32GB RAM WE ARE A GO

\o/

32 CORES FTW

11:52 PM
@GeorgeMarian did you read the story there? Sounds like we're just tired of drinking swill

@drachenstern LOL. No I didn't, but I had come to that conclusion on my own. :)

> So, what makes it stomach-friendly? They say they use a special selection of coffee beans, and then roast it under a carefully monitored process. When the beans reach a certain color, they halt the roasting process. This is supposed to reduce the levels of gastric-irritants.
Why wouldn't you just always roast the beans to the right time and then stop? Why would you ever overroast the beans on purpose?

A few months ago I had great cup of coffee, black and it was just drip brewed. So, nothing special, except that it wasn't crap.
2
@drachenstern Well, that depends on the customer's taste, as least to some extent. (Obviously, there is some reasonable limit.)
