Heh
Just read on AAM about a company using "Topgrading" hiring methodology
That sounds like scientology's guide to hiring people

user202362
riding unicorns, I shall be very interested ...

@Derpy I'm also unconvinced about what gender you are
It is really unimportant though

@Magisch ask GraceNote.

coincidentally, I don't have a clue about GraceNote's gender either
And it's not important enough for me to ping a CM over

2:13 PM
@Derpy glares

@Magisch Cactuar

user202362
shog is a chick, she's lovely

@Magisch you can ping @Grace, you won't get a response...

@Derpy so that's what that thing is called

Maybe @Derpy Is GraceNote's sockpuppet account

2:14 PM
@Telkitty your joke is double fun since Medusa was female.

user202362
shog's full name is Sarah Hog

I know that Shog's name is Josh and that he has a fabulous display case of alcohol at home

@ShadowWizard maybe I am SweetWisher, maybe I am Magic. I could be Lauren Faust, or all that talk about UO could mean that I am Iolo...

@Magisch you can't know for sure. It might all be a fake.

2:17 PM
But I talked to shog in a google hangout once
He's genuine
a genuine shog, that is

@Magisch did you actually see him?

Yes

After the last Meta community townhall
He had a google hangout and walked around to show people his apartment and garden

Show off

2:18 PM
I always just assumed that Shog was actually Pat "FuriousDestroyer". Or maybe Jen.

His head is really floating? @Magi

Maybe...

Next time, check it. :D

> Although it doesn't explicitly state that you cannot migrate a question all by yourself, one can deduct that it's not possible to do this.
I think 'deduct' is not the correct word here, but I don't know which word is?

@Stijn context.. where is it from?

2:23 PM

A: Can I myself move my own question to another site?

StijnSee Can we move a question from Stack Overflow to another Stack Exchange site? A user with 3,000 rep can vote to migrate a question to another site. "safely assume"

found it, was looking for 'deduce' :)

@Stijn sounds fine to me. :)
@Stijn oh. good!

or you could go the route I one did while building a DTO mapper during a refactoring of a very poorly written project

@Derpy "safely assume" that your changes would work? :)

2:29 PM
at the end, the class was called "DtoAthanor" and the conversion method was something like "CalcinateEntity"
also know as "purify by fire"

2:39 PM
oh.
@InfiniteRecursion Quack, quack queeek (Hi Infinite, what brings you here today?)

Too bad Programmers got such a long name now, now you have to type "site:softwareengineering.stackexchange.com" when googling

3:01 PM
so... just happened at my office.
I go to the vending machine and there is a piece of paper with "we are doing some work on the payment system, if the card/key credit does not display after some second try removing the card"
I put the prepaid key in, put a 5gp banknote in... and it goes poff.
No credit was charged.

My bosses are flabbergasted why they can't hire another programmer

I then remove the prepaid key... and surprise. The display shows a 50 $ credit.

They offer 18k yearly salary (only just over min wage) but want a minimum 4 year uni CS degree and 2 years industry experience.

I put the key back in... no credit. Remove it -50 $ again

@Magisch yeah ... how about "No".

3:05 PM
I bought snacks for the original 5$ i put it then another guy comes, buys a coffee with his key...

@Bart At least we don't have to conduct interviews (They would have us do them)

the 45 $ left were gone
I am somehow tempted to try and see if the bug can be reproduced

@Magisch in plenty of interviews I've had at the start, either the interviewer had no idea what it is I'm doing, or they didn't care because they were made to interview me. The best question ever asked was "If I were to hire you, ... what is it that you would be doing here?"

@Bart tbh I would have no clue how to properly interview a programmer

@Magisch it really depends on what you are really doing.

3:09 PM
A code challenge perhaps? But I'm an apprentice myself, so what good is my word vs a professional programmer with uni degree and 2 years experience ...

@Magisch it's difficult. Generally it's not a bad idea (imho) to weed out the worst with a simple online programming test before they even visit.
And it highly depends on the position you're hiring for of course.

first, decide if you want a developer to trust or a code monkey to enslave. Technical questions are only OT for the first category... if you are looking for a slave you should focus your question on exploring how desperate for food he is

My own interview for the apprenticeship went like "So you can code, right?" "Well, a tiny bit" "Write hello world in c on this paper" "Ok good enough"
#include <stdio.h>
int main (void) {
printf("Hello World!");
return 0;
}

Awww ... totally missed the chance to write "hello world in c"

I wanted that job
so no room for eventualities

3:17 PM
I interviewed with Stack Overflow a couple years ago and had to implement basic algorithms on a notepad-like website while in a Hangout. I was pretty bad at it, but aside from that found the interview method questionable at the least.
And that's the only coding interview I ever had, all others are mostly "get to know you" interviews

@Stijn :o
I'm a little sad Stack hires only senior developers, I'd love to apply there after my apprenticeship is done

@Stijn once during an interview I was presented with two sheets of paper (A4) filled with random characters
they then proceed to ask me if I could find out the 10 different characters in 5 minutes

@Derpy ...what

note: by "filled with random characters" I mean like this:
> fhufhiuryuhhdfhgduhgdfghdjhd ghdgudhguieeruihgdfghdfghdfjgndfjgndfjgnjhrgiufwieurkrjifojsdfisjdkgnfjgdfudfhdf‌udfiughdfgjnduidfhsrjenvu8vsjdoijfklrmwr390jrgentnu7dgfdgyrbrjklòt4uitojgijnsdpyh‌sduhurhwefsudfhsd
fill the whole A4 page with this and you get the idea.

I would have thanked them for their time and walked out. What did you do?

3:24 PM
what they didn't consider is that if you put the two sheets next each other and then look at them like a stenography image you would clearly see the different characters "float" above the others.
in the end I took the two sheets, hold them in front of me, pulled out a "look at me, I have esp powers" not even Derren Brown could have done and found out the then characters in about 10 seconds.

@Magisch They don't only hire seniors I think, but the bar is (understandably) set pretty high due to the volume of candidates.

the look on their face I still remember....

maybe you were the first to solve it :p

I asked them the purpose of the test.... they said that they wanted people with eagle eye to spot wrong characters in printed memory dumps
I then proceeded to show them my impression of a cuttlefish.
Spray some ink in their face and run away as fast as you can.

:D

Oh the glorious MSE rep.

FGITW :)

so, now that the site is up, I wonder if Shog will have that very bad time this year.
Oct 27 at 9:30, by Derpy
@JonEricson I hereby suggest that this year the tradition of boat hats (started by the Hairboat one in 2014 that required pinging Abby and then continued in 2015 with the Hairboat's Revenge one that required pinging you) lives on with a new installment called the "Sunkboat". This hat will feature a boat wrapped in the tentacles of Cthulhu and will require pinging SHOG9
who wants to be the guinea pig to test this one when Winter Bash starts?

@Derpy Derpy

And how many want to bet that they will have their revenge by actually having an hat that requires pinging me?
@M.A.R. that would be cheating since I was the one proposing the hat. I can't.

3:45 PM
@zaq Considered, yes. Actually done it, no.

More ads for ru.so await me in near future: there is an experiment on linking questions between sites so that visitors to the English version will get an invitation to the other one, provided they have that language setting...

Out of five Product Managers, two have a clearly defined role (at present at least): Kit is working on Developer Story, Desiree on Jobs. I couldn't figure out what the other three are managing... in particular, I don't see any PM with the kind of meta presence that Laura had.

user315433
Well, Chance appears to manage Enterprise, which explains the lack of visible activity.

@zaq zaq
are you a business analyst? I've seen you analysing stuff almost every time I see you in here :P

user315433
Without the business part.

Is just analyst a profession?
Like, just analysing everything

user315433
Okay, not everything. Mostly the sort of stuff you failed at Uni.

5:33 PM
So differential equations, graphs and predicate logic?

user315433
Yeah, the mathy kind of stuff.

grr
Do you have a math degree then

user315433
Yes, got a few of those.

look at mr fancypants over here with his multiple math degrees :D

A: How can I add tags to another user question without having to edit its message?

Nathan TuggySimplicity itself: suggest nothing but tag edits. If you do that, the edit will go through (example). I think you can also make edits to the title, as any title edits are always enough. However, if you make even a one-character edit to the body, you'll have to edit at least six characters. That'...

user315433
Kind of weird, but is it correct that tag-only suggested edits don't get rewarded with +2?

user315433
If so, then the system makes some sense.
