oh?

Yes, he talked about struggling to keep up with various time zone changes, like when a country decides to cancel DST with only 11 days notice
though I can't really see UTC not being an option as Google 'future proofing'

Ah, yeah, the Tony the Pony talk.
the one where he also complained about CST right? Central Standard Time in the US, Central Standard Time in Australia and Central Summer Time in Australia still

The former of those is clearly superior.

All clearly pale in relevance to CET, needless to say.
The one and only timezone.

I've never seen a bot edit a Stack Exchange question... until today.

Q: Odd upvoting patterns

sepp2kI have just noticed a very odd upvoting pattern on Stackoverflow: Jon Skeet gets more upvotes than I do even though his answers are clearly inferior to mine. This should be fixed immediately!!! People owe me an explanation why they're not upvoting me. kthxbye

6:19 PM
Oh no, I've forsaken @badp
10 reps lost to the rep cap

@TimStone :o

Aye
Two town halls?!

Yay, my doppleganger is here!
@Tim, while you were out (hang on, I'll get your messages)

Hooray!

@TimPost LOL

6:24 PM
That's OK, I got this gem in my inbox this morning:
> chat message on The Tavern (General) @Tim: I will shoot you.

Sorry about that ...

Heheh :P

@Tim: I will shoot you.
:P

@Tim: I will shoot; you?

@Tim I will. Shoot. You?

6:26 PM
@Tim: I. Will shoot? You!

Amazing, flags now make perfect sense!

Ah, finally got my hair cut. I no longer look like a bum off the street. Success!
Now back to figuring out why Chrome is being evil..

I will? Shoot you.

@TimStone : do { dont_be_evil(); } while(evil);

@badp I, Will. Shoot, YOU!

6:32 PM
@TimPost It'll probably bug and tell me that evil is undefined like it's doing now. :(

I have a love hate relationship with Chrome. It depends on if I'm using it or fixing something for other people who happen to be using it.
I'm working on a console redirect, think AjaxTerm on crack. The only browser where my shortcut keys and macros don't work is Chrome.

That's pretty annoying. We had no problem with it up until a dev release or two ago, when it started breaking the chat userscript.

@TimStone You mean SEChatModifications?

Yes

@TimStone Yeah, that's broken for me, too. :(

6:40 PM
Yeah, I'm trying to figure out what's causing it to behave so weirdly.

(13) Uncaught TypeError: Cannot call method 'run' of undefined jquery.livequery.js:182

Yep, but the bug is in Chrome itself somewhere. There's nothing wrong with the script.
goes to look at the SVN revisions

7:14 PM
@TimStone - This will be fun, let's see how long it takes from your bug report for aptitude on my desktop to tell me that there is a new version of google-chrome-beta available :)
Chrome is the eternal excuse to bump my company's API version at least twice a day.
"We've had nine versions in three weeks, care to explain? But boss , look how Google does it!"

holy smokes I'm 5 points from mortarboard on MSO
14 hours ago, by drachenstern
Hmmm, 144 today on MSO ... I might get mortarboard on MSO before getting mortarboard on SO :\
guess I was right

@TimPost Hahah, looking at the size of the change log I doubt I'm going to figure it out.
@drachenstern Yeah, I got it while I was out at the store, heheh.

@drachenstern: you got it now.

hahahaha
as Moshe would say "voting ring activate" :p ... and I was looking for interesting new questions to answer :\

7:21 PM
Meh. It was worth an upvote.

dmckeeLet me put this very simply. I've never coded a line of java in my life. Do you really want my favorite awk expressions polluting your abbreviation space?

oh, crap. slaps head

Q: Allow users with edit privileges to approve peer edits with one click.

jzd Possible Duplicate: Edit(1) approval privilege (lack of) for 2K+ users doesn't make sense I read here: How Peer Edits Work That: In general, it takes TWO users with 1k+ rep to approve or reject a suggested edit. However there are many exceptions: Users with 20k+ ...

why was the duplicate deleted?

Odd.

Argh, shame on Google for using SVN for V8

@TimStone seriously? wtf?
Is it only SVN for external users?

7:48 PM
No, I think they just...use SVN.
Anyone know if it's possible to get the changes that occurred between two tags?

uh ... I used to
link me to the head?

(Well, not the head, but the tag)

that'll work, hang on
So to get ALL of them, are you looking to download from their site or extract from what's on your machine?
I know SVN has a tool for that somewhere (IIRC) but I know you can download specific diffs too

Yeah, the change view would work for me, I just don't know what changed between 3.0.7 and 3.0.9

Example: svn diff -r 456:459 subfn.cpp

7:59 PM
As in what files, rather.

You'ld have to find out what day/changeset was 3.0.7 I guess
@TimStone how do you know when was 3.0.7?
I think you're gonna have to resort to the commandline

Right, I have no idea when 3.0.7 was, heh

what does that tell you? anything special? I don't think it's working like I expect it to
it's truncating the tags view :\

oh hahaha

8:03 PM
@drachenstern Yeah, that's retarded too, since it shows you the first tags instead of the most recent.

So do you want the latest r in that range?
hmmm, how to find all the files that have changed between two tags on SVN?
1
Q: Subversion: How to find the differences between two tags?

user394475Hi I know that a diff between two tags lists the 'files' which have been changed between those two tags by the following method. svn diff tag1 tag2 |grep Index: Is there any property in Subversion or some technique to find out revision numbers which caused those files to change (i.e differ...

AH, SO, right. ;)
Brilliant, thanks.

Q: Displaying a list of files that have changed since last changeset in SVN

mrblahI work with a team, and we use Subversion. In the morning I want to see exactly what was changed since the last build, is there a way to get a list of files that were modified between changesets? Update Using tortoiseSVN please

and a final one

Q: Subversion listing changes between URLs

user563251I am looking for a way of easily listing changes between two URLs in subversion, listing the files that have changed , when , who and why. Using Totoise either gives you too much detail, showing the actual source code changes or too little i.e. it lists the files that have changed without the ...

one of those three might be helpful.

Yeah, thanks. If it was hg or git, I could just look backward through the changesets, but alas. :( This should hopefully do though.
\o/

> I'ld like to take this opportunity to thank the academy, and my director, and all my sympathy upvoters

8:31 PM
somebody pick heads or tails!

Tails!

thanks, hope you're right q:

Uh oh, what have I gotten myself into? :P

I would've chosen on its side

8:32 PM
Doing Super Bowl prop bets with some friends. I couldn't decide whether to pick heads or tails for the coin toss (;

Ah ha

Oh in that case I would've called "on the ground"

@drachenstern Yeah, that would have been a safer call on my part. Now I'll have to cross my fingers.

haha
now that's a high quality picture :\

If I don't win all the money, it is going to sit squarely on @TimStone's shoulders.
Any other ones that I get wrong are also his fault.
(:

8:37 PM
I would have said "Heads" ;)

I would've said "Oy"

Oy is not a choice sadly ):

Or possibly "edge"

My solution to being forced to shoulder the blame is to not be wrong.

@drachenstern nom!..

8:38 PM
Indeed
I'm trying to be motivated to work on this query, but I can't seem to get motivated to do it

@RebeccaChernoff Remember that we can also lay the blame on your incorrect assignment of heads and tail to each team

@badp No, they call it on their own. :(

@TimStone Cool, then it's their fault! It's all settled now.

@RebeccaChernoff the teams could call it wrong. They could also take the blame.

8:44 PM
It isn't what they call, it's just what the coin result actually is.

grumble grumble stupid allergies
Ah, yes. Feedly in Chromium. This should be much better than using it in Firefox.

@GeorgeMarian :(
Ahh, interesting.

@TimStone Even the cat has allergies. lol

They made some changes to scopes.cc, wonder if something in here is to blame.

@TimStone I figured performance issues should be less of a problem, just close that window and reopen it.

8:55 PM
Everything seems to be much better than using Firefox these days, heh. ;)

Yah, it's starting to look like that. =/

@TimStone until I get the same expectation with IE9 RTM I won't say that. FX is always better than IE8, even FX1

Sigh:

A: Add MSO -> SO migration path

Jeff AtwoodNo, I don't support this. If users are so confused that they ask a programming question here, they need to figure a few things out on their own without us spoon feeding it to them.

I still don't get how so many people end up on Meta posting SO questions.

@TimStone Google probably

9:07 PM
Meta's the ninth link down searching for stackoverflow.com, and not even on the first page searching for stackoverflow..so hrm.

I'm guessing these people are not searching for "stackoverflow", or they'd already know which site to post on
They're searching for some variant of "solve my programming problem"

Which turns up Meta? There must be a question we can blame somewhere, heh.

Apparently; I don't know how else they could be getting there. Nor do I understand how mods moving them to SO is ok, but 3k users doing it is spoon-feeding

@MichaelMrozek I'm actually surprised he didn't comment on the other answer. I get the impression he just wants them deleted.

9:26 PM
@TimStone I would be willing to bet the analytics code for GA would tell the search terms they're using to show up by
@TimStone same here.
@MichaelMrozek I don't think he's condoning that, just that he can't set a unilateral decision like that

I knew somebody in high school who used AIM, but literally didn't know how to start it -- it started with the computer, and they never closed it. If they did close it by mistake, they just restarted the computer

Q: Playing the key value on keydown in C#

me1982Hello, I'm quite new to C# and am working on developing a software for blind and visually impaired people. in the software I want to have a text box that when a key is pressed it will make a sound for instance when pressing j it will say j... I found the wonderful text to speech engine and tried ...

2 minutes later and the answer is identical to mine - oh well

only reading the title made me think this had to do with music

There's two answers that repeat mine now! Why do they think they're adding new information?

9:33 PM
@ChrisF Concurrent answers...

@badp I don't think so. Mine was 7 minutes ago, the second 5 and the third 2. So that's a gap of 2 minutes and 3/5 minutes. At least one of the first 2 answers should have been visible to the third guy.
BTW - I'm just using this as an illustration. I've seen the same occur on other questions.

@ChrisF What's the polling period for "A new reply has been posted"?

45 seconds, I think. That might've been editing though, I don't remember

@badp It's about a minute.

A: Replace trilogy raw links with the current question title?

The Renamed ExceptionI like this idea a lot, it would save me from having to generate links the "right" way and I do think it would make the site a lot cleaner. Hrum... it's 7 Feb, and the three elections that are suppose to start today haven't started yet

@YiJiang It's not the 7th for another 2 hours ;)

@ChrisF It has been here for 6 already ;)

@YiJiang, what time did the previous elections start?

10:04 PM
You live 13 hours in the future, from my vantage point

@YiJiang That's because you live in the wrong place ;)

So, you know who's going to win the superbowl already?

@RebeccaChernoff Around 2 hours ago, hrm....

erm, what?

In terms of time of day

4am in the morning, tomorrow

why does it matter?

10:06 PM
aww, the election page got unpinned

@RebeccaChernoff Because updating the elections page is a manual process

So you just need to know what sites are starting?

@RebeccaChernoff I already know that, but the time would be nice too
@drachenstern -1 for a glaring lack of Jeff responses on the post you linked to in that answer to my question about spell check in the title

@YiJiang I swear the one I linked to had an answer from him, did I pick the wrong link out of my browser lineup at the time?

10:10 PM
oy crap, I picked out the wrong one :(
why didn't someone tell me in the comments?

@badp Stupid Chrome and it's implementation of column-count

@YiJiang Err, what do you mean?

Q: Is "the USA" singular or plural?

badpOn the one side, the USA is just one country. Logic says it should be, then, singular, just like the United Kingdom is. Example: The USA owns this domain. On the other side, if I however expand "the USA" to "the United States of America", I'd tend towards using plural — the noun the v...

which one is english.se supposed to be

@DanGrossman That might be why I'm not getting votes or answers. Or that might be the Super Bowl.

I read somewhere about considering singular nouns that represent groups as plural
but that's not done in american english

@DanGrossman the correct information

A: Is "the USA" singular or plural?

Dan GrossmanBoth "USA" and "The United States of America" are a single proper noun. They are names. I don't believe you can point to a word within a name to call the name a plural. Both names refer to a single entity. They should be followed by the singular form. The exception is in some British English whe...

@DanGrossman Thank you
The conundrum is I don't know what to upvote, if I knew I'd knew what the answer is!

I'll upvote @DanGrossman for providing a link I guess

Why would I want to share my answer on facebook?

I find it a tad ironic that you needed a bunch of programmers to answer the question, in light of a recent blog post by Jeff. :)

Someone injected a lot of social crap in that interface

11:00 PM
Yah, it's the whole make it easier to promote the sites thing.

My cousins really don't care that I have an opinion on pluralization (or pluralisation in the UK?)

@badp wait for community concensus?

@drachenstern yeah.

A: what is a normal developer to pageview ratio?

Dan GrossmanReddit.com receives over 1 billion page views per month and has 5 or 6 developers (I'm not sure if they hired someone as a result of the last job posting). Let's assume it's 6. That means they handle 167 million page views per developer. Your company is vastly overpaying and should fire all but...

so the Glee people actually sing eh?

@DanGrossman apparently so
is that who is opening the game?

11:20 PM
yep
coincidence that Glee is on immediately after the superbowl?

as you can see I'm not really into football and wouldn't have normally asked that except today seems to have a special vibe to it for some people
I just want to see the commercials
guess I should turn it on now eh?

yeah
I watch it every year for the commercials and pre/half-time shows, I don't watch any other football

And now someone who's as old as I am almost :\ ... I didn't realize she was that old
I had to look it up
that McD's commercial was dumb

In a SHOW OF AMERICAN MIGHT, the Blue Angels fly... almost 40 year old aircraft... in formation over the stadium.

@DanGrossman because American's apparently only need 40 year old military technology to kick the ass of anyone else? Surely that's not the message the intend to convey.

11:30 PM
The Superbowl: 17 minutes of football play time, plus 3 hours 43 minutes of commercials, huddling, performances and commentary.

@drachenstern I was joking anyway; don't unformat it :)
